here are countless opportunities to keep fit in our region. Even when the autumn and winter sets in and the idea of canoeing or swimming lose their summer appeal, there are plenty of other ways to exercise and

joining one of the many associations that exist is a great way to occupy yourself in the cooler months.For example, an excellent way to keep fit and improve your French language skills is to join one of the many walking groups that are a feature of most towns and villages in France. The website www.ffrandonnee.fr (Fédération Française de Randonnée) gives full details of the 25 clubs in the Lot region but you will also find many other groups advertised at the Mairie or tourist offices. If you would rather do a walk yourself, there are dozens of recommended routes featured on the site www.tourisme-lot.com with details of the distance, duration and level of difficulty. With over 600km of long distance footpaths in our region, including a section of the famous St Jacques de Compostelle route, plus countless other footpaths, there is every reason to dig out those hiking boots.Cycling is another way to enjoy the beauty of our countryside and without doubt, France is a great place to cycle, with most drivers demonstrating great patience with cyclists on the main roads. Virtually, every French town has a cycling club for the dedicated cyclist and you only have to watch the Tour de France to appreciate just how much the French love cycling and cyclists. However, you don't need to be a serious athlete to enjoy using the cycle paths that are common in our region, many of them using the old railway routes to provide safe, flat journeys. Tourist offices are a great source for information on dedicated cycle paths and one of my favourite routes, called the 'Promenade en Bouriane', is the 10.5km route from the tiny village of St-Cirq-Madelon via the pretty village of Payrignac and on to the beautiful town of Gourdon. The Lot tourism website also has details of numerous other cycle routes with maps and details.Horse riding is another fantastic way to experience some of our stunning scenery and it is also incredibly good value compared to prices in the UK. The Lot has more than 700km of bridle paths plus the 600km of long distance footpaths that are also open to riders. To find a riding school, see the website of the Fédération Française d'Equitation www.ffe.comIf all these open-air activities are not to your taste, then why not consider signing up for one of the many associations that re-start around September such as yoga, pilates or gym classes? These are often held in local town halls and advertised in nearby shops, tourist offices and mairies. As well as improving your fitness, these classes are another great way to mix with your neighbours and improve your French. For example, after a couple of years of a yoga class, I now know the French words for virtually every part of the body!So, there is no excuse for boredom or lack of fitness and after all there has to be some way to work off all the great food and wine that we enjoy here year-round!

CATUS CRICKET CLUB IN 6 QUESTIONS

Who are you?We are a bunch of ordinary blokes, builders, carpenters, retirees who love a game of cricket. Our ages range from 15 to an age where some of us should know better than to still be playing cricket...Where are you?We play in a tranquil, picturesque setting on an all weather wicket at Lac Vert, Catus. To get there you drive in the main entrance to Lac Vert, follow the road until you cross the bridge, turn left and go past the football pitch and stand, and there we are.Who do you play?Until last year we played teams as far away as Angoulème and Bordeaux, in a league structure. However, this season we decided to withdraw from theleague and reduce travelling. We still travel a fair distance to Damazan, Eymet and Toulouse, but as the summer vacation approaches we look forward to more home fixtures, many against touring sides, such as Bristol Venturers, Beckenham Dads, and, from Scotland, the Silly Mid-Offers, who regaled us with bagpipes at the end of the match last year.When do you play?From April to September, usually on a Sunday afternoon. We also have nets on a Wednesday at Catus at 6pm, followed by a few beers and, as the Irish would say, "the craic".What do you want?Like many Cricket Clubs we need more players, regardless of sex, age, ability, or nationality, although a few more decent players would obviously be a bonus in order to become more competitive. The only other requirement I can think of is to be willing to accept praise and ridicule in equal measure.Anything else?Yes, we have a popular quiz night at the Auberge de Quercy, Salviac, the first Thursday of each month at 8pm. EDITORIALBonjourWith the Rugby World Cup coming soon, we thought that this “rentrée” had to be a bit sporty, to stay in the spirit of this month of September. Although many of us have some friends (or maybe some of you !) going to New Zealand to support the teams, here in the Lot we will be able to support them in front of our screen… But never mind, it will be a great moment to share. Whether you organise a meeting with your neighbours or go to a bar to watch it on a big screen, it will be synonymous with conviviality. You may then want to extend this team spirit all year round by joining a walking group, a dance class, yoga group or even a rugby or football team (there are even teams for Veterans!)… It is an excellent way to get into French social life and make new friends. Just ask your mairie or tourist office (but not necessarily the one from your village) for the “liste des associations” and you will be able to make your choice among the many activities offered at a very reasonable price, usually starting in September… If you are not really sporty and more of an Epicurian - or as a reward for the sporty ones - wine tasting courses in Cahors or Parnac may be a real treat for you… In any case, I hope that you enjoy every moment spent here in the Lot and also reading Le Forty-Six magazine ! will note that Eric Cantona was credited with almost single-handed recovery of Manchester United and Thierry Henry's va, va, voom helped Arsene Wenger power Arsenal to the top flight. Most French towns have a stadium and football ground and in many cases, there is a 'veterans' team. Now, when we talk veterans here, we are not talking about prime candidates for a cardiac arrest, but those among us who are still reasonably fit and can run for 90 minutes without need of medical attention.

f you have not been smitten by the Rugby bug up to now, this World Cup could be the event to get you

started. There is no doubt that the enthusiasm for the game in New Zealand will be infectious and you may then want to follow up by supporting a local team. Cahors play at Les Desperats stadium across the Lot from the centre of town and Brive and Toulouse are top flight teams in the running for cup honours each year. Rugby is particularly a passion in South West France possibly due to

the game of Soule. This was a barbaric contest where men from opposing villages met at the parish border to fight over a leather ball or pig's bladder stuffed with hay, the winners carrying it back to their village church. Many would be wounded and Soule was outlawed in the late nineteenth century. So could this account for the fanatical support of French fans for their local rugby teams? It has a definite ring of familiarity!The 2011 Rugby World Cup kicks off in New Zealand on 9th September with the home side (The All Blacks) playing Tonga in Auckland. France is in the same group (Pool A) and first plays Japan the next day. Both matches will be played at 08:00 our time. The Final will be played out on Sunday 23rd at the Eden Park Stadium in Auckland.Scotland and England are in Pool B. Scotland begin their campaign in Invercargill on 10th September at 03:00 our time against Romania. England get their first touch against Argentina at 10:30 in Dunedin. Ireland are in Pool C and play USA on 11th at 08:00 in New Plymouth. Wales, who are in Pool D, kick off against South Africa at 10:30 on the same day in Wellington.In all twenty teams will be competing for the Rugby World Cup. It always gets lots of coverage in France and you will be hard pressed to miss it on television or in your local bar as, despite the time difference, important matches and daily highlights will be replayed during the evenings.It is also possible to follow British players who play in France for French clubs. Brive has Shaun Perry (England Scrum Half), Jamie Noon (England Centre), Andy Goode (England Fly-Half) and Alix Popham (Welsh No 8) in their squad. Club Athlétique Brive Corrèze (Les Corrèziens) founded in 1904. Their stadium can seat 15,000 so there is room for all!Tickets have been on sale since July 4th so if you haven't already booked your tickets and travel you will most likely have to watch the tournament on television. So, if you are a fan of 'the beautiful game' why not get along to a training session. The worst that could happen is that you could end up fitter than when you arrived.Training is a moot point. If you are an avid football fan and could still manage 90 minutes of activity so long as there is a pint at the end of it, you could seek a role as trainer for a youth side. Training youngsters to play the game as it should be played will always be a rewarding activity – so much better than computer games. All of the French legends mentioned above, as well as many others, came from a chequered range of backgrounds and in common with George Best and the Charlton brothers, they were driven on by their love of the game. If you can instill that in your young charges, you could have a star on your hands.You need not be too worried about the language, as many footballing expressions are the same, save for pronunciation and accents. So match, penalty, corner, footballer, tackle and pass, work in either language. You could guess joueur for player, défenseur for defender, période for half and avant or attaquant for forward. Less obvious expressions are gardien de but (goalie), arbitre (referee) or un but contre son camp (own goal). Of course, you will also need to know faute (foul) and it follows you would then need to know un carton jaune or carton rouge (yellow card or red card) and the verb expulser – to send off!Throughout the season, many local bars with satellite television will be happy to show matches in the French Ligue. Paris St Germain versus Bordeaux is always a popular fixture and TV5 has a weekly run down of results and analysis. You may even get to see the odd English Premier League match! John

He cooks them in his wood burning pizza oven which is actually in the restaurant area. Meat ave you ever felt guilty about eating animals? If so, why not consider becoming a vegetarian or, if you really want to go the whole hog (sorry!), what about becoming a

vegan ?Vegetarians generally follow a diet that excludes red meat, poultry and seafood. Vegans are much stricter and eat a plant-based diet that excludes all animal-derived foodstuffs including eggs and dairy products. This also extends to avoiding any products that may include ingredients that are by-products of animal slaughter such as gelatin. This really complicates the task as there are numerous products that fall into this category including many processed foods, baked goods, several sweets and even some wines and beers!This may make you wonder what can a vegan eat? Essentially their diet is based on grains, beans, vegetables and fruits so can be very varied but of course, without the addition of, for example, any cheese or cream. Arguably, a vegan cook has to be particularly inventive but nowadays, there are lots of internet sites and cookery books that provide a wide range of vegetarian and vegan recipes. Vegans also avoid the use of any products that have been tested on animals as well as animal-derived non-food products such as leather, fur or wool. This is also the case for some vegetarians but they tend to be slightly more flexible on this front.So why do people choose to be vegetarians or vegans? The reasons can be wide and varied but usually are a mix of ethical, health or religious principles. The ethical reasons are fairly obvious: many meat-eaters would probably become vegetarians if they had to kill an animal personally. Another reason people follow a vegetarian or vegan diet is because they believe it is healthier. Indeed there is a lot of research that shows vegetarians and vegans are less likely to suffer from such problems as heart disease, obesity, diabetes and many types of cancer. In addition, several religions, including Hinduism, Buddhism and Judaism forbid the eating of all or some animals. Many non-vegetarians think that vegetarians and especially vegans are slightly wacky, new-age individuals. However, vegetarianism is not actually that new - indeed the earliest records of vegetarian diets have been traced as far back as the 6th century BC in India and Greece. There have also been many illustrious vegetarians throughout the ages including Leonardo da Vinci, Albert Einstein, Yehudi Menuhin, Friedrich Nietzsche and Benjamin Franklin to name but a few. In the end, it is a personal decision. However, making the move to become vegetarian or vegan whilst living in France means an additional challenge since very often the only ‘vegetarian' option on a French menu is an omelette ! banning hydraulic fracturation in June there was little left to worry about. Sadly, there was no proper definition of

what constitutes 'hydraulic fracturing' and in any event 'fracturation pneumatique' which deploys compressed air could still be an alternative. This or any one of the other re-named processes that the Oil and Gas industry is likely to come up within the two month 'proving' period could in theory be adopted. If they are allowed to proceed in the autumn with alternative processes, the negative effects of 'foraging' will be much the same. These will include derricks (30m-50m high) as close as 50m to one's property, massive logistical considerations including literally hundreds of truck movements just to remove earth, personnel movements at all hours and landscape clearance/desecration. Messrs Total have 'not yet decided what to do' and Toreador claim that hydraulic fracturation was not specified in their licence in any case. It is important to note also that the existing permits have not yet been rescinded.Opposition parties (Socialist Party, Greens, etc.) and organisations like France Nature Environment consider the new law to be 'unintelligible and unworkable' and on 6th October will jointly propose the banning 'pure and simple' of all exploration and exploitation for Gaz de Schiste in France. They are also calling for modifications to the French mining laws (loi minière) which are vastly out of date. This concerns access to one's property amongst other things. France is currently under pressure from the European Parliament to make significant changes.The government moved in June to calm massive public unrest across the country and across political allegiances by proposing the loi Jacob and then (for whatever reason) drastically diluted its terms at the last minute. They may well feel that they have succeeded, but they have not. France is the first country to react in this way to this destructive and demonstrably short term energy 'quick fix'. However, in the run up to the presidential elections it is important that we do not allow the matter to rest. David Nordon-Angus

he region covered by Le 46 has, reputedly, some 499 vineyards; most of us have probably only sampled the wine from a few of these. “Festi' Vendanges”, to be held on

Saturday 24 September, offers visitors a chance to take part in a whole-day wine “experience”. The festival was held in October last year but the organisers have decided to bring it forward this year to September. The day's events commence at 8.30am with a briefing and an accompanying snack. You then depart for the vineyard armed, if you wish, with basket, secateurs or scissors. By 13.30, you will be back in the village for a tasting of the first fresh pressing of the harvested grapes. After a buffet lunch, participants set off around Parnac and its wine cellars (the organisers say “on foot, on horse, on the tourist train or by boat!”). The viticulteurs will offer visitors a tasting and will explain the process of transforming the grape juice into their delicious wine. During the day, the square in Parnac will be buzzing with a variety of attractions including demonstrations of vine grafting and grape pressing. Jean-Pierre Alaux will show examples of his fine sculptures in wood from the vines and you will also get an opportunity to buy vine plants. You may then want to start your own vineyard at home!The main event of the afternoon is the traditional baptism of the vintage “Festi'Vendanges” by a local patron. As the evening draws on, the band “La Pieuvre” will entertain visitors whilst the serious business of an evening meal approaches. Diners will, no doubt, discuss their day's experiences whilst eating and tasting some great wine from the area...
