A brother in the Church, by the name of Burgess, had come to Kirtland and statedthat a large amount of money had beensecreted in the cellar of a certain house in

Salem, Massachusetts, which had belongedto a widow, and he thought he was the only personnow living, who had knowledge of it, or to the locationof the house. His statement was credited by the brethren, and steps were taken to try and secure thetreasure . Ebenezer Robinson, July 1889

The Prophet Joseph came to me, while I was seated in front of the stand, above thesacrament table, on the Melchisedek side of thetemple, in Kirtland, and whispering to me, said,

Brother Heber, the Spirit of the Lord has whispered to me: Let my servant Heber go toEngland and proclaim my Gospel, and open the door of salvation to that nation.

The appropriateness of this title is self evident, and in it there is a beautiful recognition of therelationship both of the Lord Jesus Christ andof the Saints to the organization. It is The

Church of Jesus Christ . It is the Lords; Heowns it, He organized it. It is the Sacred Depository of Histruth. It is His instrumentality for promulgating all thosespiritual truths with which He would have mankind

acquainted. It is also His instrumentality for theperfecting of the Saints, as well as for the work of theministry.

Itis His in all these respects; but it is aninstitution which also belongs to the Saints. Itis their refuge from the confusion and religiousdoubt of the world. It is their instructor in

principle, doctrine, and righteousness. It istheir guide in matters of faith and morals. They have aconjoint ownership in it with Jesus Christ, whichownership is beautifully recognized in the latter part of

the title. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints ,is equivalent to The Church of Jesus Christ , and TheChurch of the Latter-day Saints .

Early [in the morning of 26 April 1839], soon after midnight, the brethren arrived at Far West, and proceeded to transact the business of their mission according to the following minutes:

Minutes of the Meeting of the Twelve Apostles

at Far West, April 26, 1839. At a conference held at Far West by the Twelve, High Priests,Elders, and Priests, on the 26th day of April, 1839, thefollowing resolution was adopted.

Resolved: That the following persons be no more fellowshipedin the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, butexcommunicated from the same, viz.; Isaac Russell [and 24 of his followers].

The council then proceeded to the building spot of the LordsHouse; when the following business was transacted: Part of ahymn was sung, on the mission of the Twelve.Elder Alpheus Cutler, the master workman of the house, thenrecommenced laying the foundation of the Lords House, agreeably to revelation, by rolling up a large stone near thesoutheast corner. The following of the Twelve were present: Brigham Young,Heber C. Kimball, Orson Pratt, John E. Page, and John Taylor, who proceeded to ordain Wilford Woodruff, and George A.Smith, (who had been previously nominated by the FirstPresidency, accepted by the Twelve, and acknowledged by theChurch), to the office of Apostles and members of the quorumof the Twelve, to fill the places of those who are fallen.

. Elder Alpheus Cutler then placed the stone before alluded to inits regular position, after which, in consequence of the peculiarsituation of the Saints, he thought it wisdom to adjourn until

some future time, when the Lord shall open the way;expressing his determination then to proceed with the building; whereupon the conference adjourned. Thus was fulfilled a revelation of July 8, 1838, which ourenemies had said could not be fulfilled, as no Mormon would be permitted to be in the state.

As the Saints were passing away from the meeting, BrotherTurley said to Elders Page and Woodruff, Stop a bit, while I bid Isaac Russell good bye; and knocking at the door, calledBrother Russell. His wife answered, Come in, it is BrotherTurley. Russell replied, It is not; he left here two weeks ago;and appeared quite alarmed; but on finding it was BrotherTurley, asked him to sit down; but the latter replied, I cannot,I shall lose my company. Who is your company? enquiredRussell. The Twelve. The Twelve! Yes, dont you know thatthis is the twenty-sixth, and the day the Twelve were to takeleave of their friends on the foundation of the Lords House, togo to the islands of the sea? The revelation is now fulfilled, andI am going with them. Russell was speechless, and Turley bid

him farewell. History of the Church 3:336 40

When[D&C 119] was given in 1838, I waspresent, and recollect the feelings of the brethren. A number of revelations were givenon the same day. The brethren wished me to goamong the Churches, and find out what surplusproperty the people had with which to forward the building of the Temple we were commencing at Far West.I accordingly went from place to place through thecountry. Before I started, I asked brother Joseph, Whoshall be the judge of what is surplus property ? Said he,Let them be the judges themselves, for I care not if they do not give a single dime. So far as I am concerned, I donot want anything they have .

For your guidance in this matter, please beadvised that we have uniformly replied thatthe simplest statement we know of is thatstatement of the Lord himself that themembers of the Church should pay one-tenth of all their interest annually, which isunderstood to mean income. No one is justified in making any other statementthan this. We feel that every member of the Church should be entitled to make his own decision as to what he thinkshe owes the Lord, and to make payment accordingly.

    The First Presidency, March 1970

Every man is left to be his own judge as to what hecalls his tithing, and there is a great variety of opinion as to what a tithing is. A man who works for wages, and devotes his whole time to the service hisemployer, and he receives $1,000 or $2,000 a yearfor his salary, it is an matter for him to tell how much he owes for tithing. If I earned $2,000 a year,I should know that my tithing was just one-tenth of that. And I would not take out what it had cost me to feed and clothemyself and to pay all the expenses necessary to themaintenance of my family, before I reckoned with the Lord asto what belonged to Him. Two hundred dollars would be my honest tithing, would it not? That is the way I look at it.

    30/33

Then, if a farmer raises 2,000 bushels of wheat asthe result of his years labor, how many bushelsshould he pay for tithing? Well, some people will go,straightway to dickering with the Lord. They willsay they hired a man so and so, and his wages must be taken out; that they had to pay such and suchexpenses, and this cost and that cost; and they reckon out all their expenses, and tithe the balance. If a manearns $1,000, and it has cost him $600 to live, he pays tithingon the remaining $400. He considers that his net income, andhe reckons with the Lord on that basis. Well, a great many of the Latter-day Saints reckon with God in just that way.

Now, you are at liberty to do as you please inregard to this matter. You can choose which evercourse you wish. But let me say to you that as wemeasure out so will it be measured back unto usagain. When we go to dickering with the Lord, probably He will dicker with us: and if Heundertakes to do so, we shall get the worst of it. Ithink we had better be honest with the Lord, and deal justly and liberally with Him; for, as it is said in the scriptures, theliberal man deviseth liberal things, and by his liberality shall hestand. My experience in my childhood was that when the widow paid one-tenth of every bushel of potatoes, of wheat, of oats of barley; when she paid the tenth chicken, or egg, thetenth calf, the tenth colt, the tenth pound of beef, or pork

when she did this she was blessed, and I know it.

God opened up her way, and multiplied blessingsupon her; and though a widow, driven into the wilderness with a large family, and without meansto take care of them, she never had to ask for orreceive help from the Church to feed and clothe her

or her children. The Lord provided for her, becauseshe put her trust in Him and she was obedient toHis law. I am a witness to that. And the Lord willprovide for other widows in the same way. He will provide forall His people according as they put their trust in Him and are

faithful and obedient. Obedience is better than sacrifice, and tohearken than the fat of rams . It is the heart and the willingmind that the Lord requires of His people, and not so muchtheir substance. He does not need our obedience. But we needto be obedient; for it is through obedience that we will receivethe reward . President Joseph F. Smith, April 1899
