Principal’s Message Dear Parents:

We are now finished our first three quarters of the

academic year. At the time you are reading this, we are

probably into our Spring break. When students return we

will begin our big push for the end of the year activities,

which include many awards assemblies, fine arts presenta-

tions, athletic competitions, and end of year testing. Need-

less to say, this is a very critical time as the teachers will

be preparing the students in earnest for these assessments.

Recently we have been informed by the Leesburg Po-

lice Department that they have noticed automobiles which

are entering the “EXIT only” driveway off Dry Mill Road

and some automobiles parking in Handicapped spaces

without the appropriate placards. They asked me to put out

this notice in order that everyone comes into compliance.

As we approach the end of the year, please stay up to

date on our activities by checking out our website, includ-

ing the daily announcements link.

I hope everyone has an enjoyable and restful spring

break and that we are all ready for the final stretch toward

the end of the year.

Sincerely yours,

Bill Oblas

Spring is a great time to

visit college campuses!

There are many college campus Open

Houses in the spring. Check out the

college website under Admissions and

look for the “visit schedule” to regis-

ter. Your spring break is an excellent

time to visit campus while they are in

session. Make an appointment to see a

professor or director in an area you

are interested in. For example, if you

want to be a teacher, take time to

speak with the Director of Elementary

or Secondary Education.

Now is a good time to register for an

SAT or ACT. Be sure to take the ACT

with writing.

Welcome

This camp is for students in Loudoun

County (rising seniors) only and it is

FREE! Leadership in the Law Summer

Camp is an opportunity for students

to learn firsthand about the legal system.

The program is designed to have stu-

dents work with local judges, law-

yers, law clerks and other profession-

als as they learn about the law. Stu-

dents should be well-rounded individu-

als who are motivated and eager to learn

about the legal system. The program will

introduce students to the practice of

criminal and civil law, courtroom proce-

dures, crime scene investigation and the

handling and preservation of evidence.

Experienced practitioners will provide

instruction and hands-on demonstra-

tions. Team-building skills will also be

emphasized throughout the program.

Only twenty-four students will be se-

lected to participate in the overnight

camp from June 17 thru June 22. Pick up

an application in the career center or

visit the Guidance website under

“Announcements”.The application

deadline is April 9, 2012.

Leadership In The Law Summer Camp 2012

Can you believe there is only 25% left of the school year? The end of the 3rd quar-ter was March 30th. For many students, this is a very critical time of the year. Schedules for next year, AP exams, SOL tests, scholarships, and graduation status are all important milestones that are closing in for our students. Please be aware of many important deadlines that pertain to these events.

Seniors please keep your guidance counselor aware of the colleges that you’ve been accepted to and any scholarships that you have been awarded.

As the 2012-2013 course selection process closes out this month, please continue to work with the teachers to make sure that your student’s schedule is appropri-ate. Increasing the communication this year will help make the transition into next year easier.

Financial Aid Forms Every college goes through a process to decide how much

financial aid they will award you. First, the family fills out

financial aid forms. Different colleges require different

forms. Be sure to check with the financial aid offices of col-

leges to which you are applying.

Each college will have a deadline for completion of the

forms. A student who applies late may miss many kinds of

financial aid.

Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

FAFSA is required by all colleges for federal financial aid

programs. Visit this website, www.fafsa.ed.go, for the

FAFSA on the Web Worksheet which allows you to read and

complete the questions before entering your information

online. The questions are listed in the same order that they

appear on the Web site. This site is also where you apply for

your PIN (ID number).

Parents and students must provide information about their

income, assets, and liabilities on that form. Information can-

not be submitted until January 1 of the senior year, and it is

based on the previous year’s taxable income.

Other Financial Aid Forms, such as PROFILE

Some colleges require families to submit another finan-

cial aid form in addition to the FAFSA. PROFILE, a financial

aid form prepared by the College Scholarship Service, is the

one most frequently used in this area.

These forms are available in each high school's guidance

office. Applicants must provide information on current tax-

year income, assets, and special circumstances.

Processing the FAFSA

The Student Aid Report (SAR)

About a week after you submit the FAFSA on-line, the

processor will send you a Student Aid Report (SAR). The

SAR will show the information you reported on the FAFSA.

You should check the information carefully and report any

errors or changes to the processor.

Expected Family Contribution (EFC)

The SAR will show your Expected Family Contribution

(EFC). The EFC is the amount that the student and family are

expected to pay for the next year’s college costs.

Congressional Formula

The EFC is based on information on the FAFSA and is

calculated according to a formula established by Congress.

Everyone is treated equally. The formula takes into account

How the Financial Aid Process Works information about the family’s income and assets, how many

children are in the family, and how close the parents are to

retirement. This is sometimes called “needs analysis.” Finan-

cial aid is intended to supplement, not replace, family re-

sources.

The FAFSA and other financial aid forms ask you to list

all colleges to which you plan to apply. Each of those schools

will receive information from your financial aid forms and

from the FAFSA. Some colleges also require aid applicants

to file an institutional form.

The College Makes an Award

When the college financial aid office has all of your fi-

nancial information, it will calculate your financial aid award.

Here’s the formula:

Total Cost of Education

- Expected Family Contribution

= Financial Need

Total Cost of Education:

Usually includes tuition, room and board if the student is

living on campus, fees, books, travel expenses, and personal

expenses.

Financial Need:

This amount is what the financial aid office uses to award

financial aid. Colleges often try to meet 100% of your need,

but sometimes they cannot. Applying to several different col-

leges may be a good idea because your financial award is

likely to be different at each college.

The Award Letter:

The financial aid office will send you an Award Letter

which tells you the total amount of financial aid the college

has awarded you. This award is presented as a financial aid

package. Usually the package includes grants and scholar-

ships, loans, and college work-study.

Paying for College:

If you believe your college is asking you to pay too much,

talk to the college’s financial aid administrator. If you have

special circumstances, explain those to the administrator.

This individual may be able to help you locate other sources

of aid.

You will not be required to pay the entire cost at once. Colleges usually bill students before school begins in August and again at the beginning of second semester in January. Some colleges can arrange month-by-month payments.

STATE LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE

Last month, March 9-11th, we took 17 DECA members to Virginia DECA’s State Leadership Con-ference. Three of the students attended a Leadership Academy, 2 competed together in a team event and the remaining 15 competed in the event that they ad-vanced on from at districts. We had a very successful

DECA, an association of marketing students, guided by the direction of marketing teachers, Mrs. Diane Petrella and Mrs. Kristen Parrish will strive to reach the national DECA goals of preparing the next generation to be Aca-demically Prepared, Community Oriented, Profession-ally Responsible and Experienced Leaders. This year’s club officers are:

year at states. We would like to start out congratulat-ing Katie Tiffany for receiving a VA DECA scholar-ship! Rachel Gettier received a medal for her first role play and Alan Haber earned a medal for his second role play. Jessica Dobies was given a medal for having one of the highest test scores in her category. Thomas Flynn, a first year marketing student, took the proud first place in his category of Communications. Aside from the students placing in their categories, our chapter received a plaque for being a Platinum Chapter, participating in DECA week, and becoming gold re-certified in the Raider Trader School Store! So a big congratulations to all!

RElAY FOR lIFE

For the past 6 years LCHS DECA has partici-pated in the American Cancer Society Western Lou-doun Relay for Life. This event will be held at Heritage High School on June 2, 2012. LCHS has signed up to help run the Relay Recess which will be targeted for elementary aged kids to participate in Relay for Life and learn about how to further protect their bodies to hopefully prevent Cancer.

MUSCULAR

DYSTROPHY

ASSOCIATION During the month of March, our chapter will be fundraising for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. We are hoping to raise enough money to send one child to a camp for kids who suffer from Muscular Dystro-phy. The camp is wheel chair accessible and is for kids who are the age of 17 and younger. It cost $800 to send just one kid to this camp where they will be able to do activities that they are not normally able to do such as horseback riding, swimming, and fishing!

The Raider Trader is operated by Marketing Education and is open each morning from 8:25-8:50. We offer a wide variety of beverages and snacks, school supplies, as well as Raider spirit wear and spirit items.

I am pleased to announce that our school has been selected to participate in the 2011-2012 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), often referred to as the Nation’s Report Card. NAEP is a program of the United States Department of Edu-cation and is an ongoing assessment of what our ele-mentary, middle, and high school students know and can do in various academic subjects. The NAEP assessment will take place on April 13, 2012. A random sample of our 17-year-old students will be selected to take a reading or mathematics paper and pencil assessment, and your child may be selected. The assessments will take 90 minutes. Students do not need to study in preparation for NAEP; however, we do ask you to encourage your child/children to do their best on this important as-sessment. Participation in NAEP is confidential. This means that the names of students who take part in the as-sessment are not recorded on any materials that leave the school, and your child’s grades or progress in school will not be affected in any way. Results for individual students, schools, or school divisions will not be reported.

In addition to subject-area questions, background information is collected to enrich the reporting of NAEP results by examining factors related to aca-demic achievement. Background questions do not address personal feelings or attitudes. Students may omit any question or part of the assessment that they do not wish to answer. By taking part in NAEP, students contribute to im-proving American education and ensuring that all of our children receive the education they deserve. NAEP appreciates the participation of each child selected. If you have questions or concerns, please contact Kristina Taylor at (571) 252-2000 X 83391 or by e-mail at [email protected]. For more information about NAEP, please visit http://nces.ed.gov/nationsreportcard. A sample questions booklet that contains student back-ground questions and examples of test questions similar to those asked in this year's assessment is available both on the NAEP Web site and at the school office.
