Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Life Cycle Cost (LCC) Tool
for
Commercial Building Development
in Hong Kong
Output of the Results The assessment results can be exported to either chart or spreadsheet format.
The tool allows user to obtain results in particular stage of life cycle. The stages include the as-built stage, operating stage and end-of-life stage.
Separate results can also be retrieved for different parts of the building, such as the foundation, the building fabric and the services.
Pull-down menu allows user to specify case and building part
Weighted global warming score
Energy use
Stage or Total Life Cycle Cost
Total LCA / LCC Score
Clear and well-organised result
Pull-down menu allows users to specifly different life cycle stage.
Stacked bars showing the performance score summed up from 10 different categories
Comparison between current case, reference case and althernative case.

Want to Conduct LCA and LCC Analysis?Conducting Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Life Cycle Costing (LCC) for commercial buildings is a complicated process. Although there are a few tools available in the market, their database suitable only to Western Europe and North America. A new LCA / LCC tool has now been made available to you to assess building developments in Hong Kong.
Three portions: Foundation, Floor and Services. Four levels hierarchy for data management
Under the framework of the tool, the modelled building is divided into three portions, namely the Foundation, Floor and Services. Each of these portions needs to be further sub-divided into various components and elements for detail analysis of the building.
LCA / LCC Tool for Hong Kong The LCA / LCC tool was developed by Ove Arup and Partners HK Ltd based on the findings of a consultancy study commissioned by the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) of the HKSAR Government. It facilitates you to conduct a formal LCA, LCC and energy calculation of commercial developments with its tailor-made database, which is suitable for Hong Kong construction practices.
The tool allows the building developer / designers to assess the environmental impacts and cost implications throughout the life cycle of a building. It quantifies the environmental and financial performances of the building design.
Framework of the ToolSince evaluation of life cycle impacts and life cycle cost of a high-rise commercial building involves a large quantity of data for calculations, a systematic approach is used in the program to organise the data with different levels.
Buildings Portions: Components: Elements:
Foundation
Foundation 1 RC Pile
Foundation N RC Beam
Floor
Floor 1 Tiles
Floor N Partitions
Services
HVAC AHU
Electrical Chiller
Fire Pipe
Lighting

DatabasesThe database contains life cycle impact profiles for a set of commonly-used construction materials for the user to select. Users are only required to specify basic parameters like dimensions and mass of the building construction as data input.
Some 20 elements have been developed for Foundation and another 40 and 200 elements have been developed for Floor and Services respectively. In case no suitable elements can be found in the database, the user may still enter an element as a Generic Element.
Environmental Impact CategoriesThe assessment follows international standard LCA analysis framework with the environmental impacts characterised into the following categories:
1. Abiotic depletion
2. Global warming
3. Ozone depletion
4. Human toxicity
5. Fresh water ecotoxicity
6. Marine aquatic ecotoxicity
7. Terrestrial ecotoxicity
8. Photochemical smog
9. Acidification
10. Eutrophication
11. Embodied energy (supplementary)
12. Waste generation (supplementary)
FunctionsThe tool allows user to compare the current design to a reference design and an alternative design.
By changing the design or the building materials, it is possible to make comparisons for any one or all of these measures in different life cycle stages.
With the comparison function, the user is able to optimise the building and system designs at the design stage and find out the most suitable and sustainable way.
Graphical comparison of different building design schemes.
