SUPPORTING LBHA HELPS SAVE AND MAINTAIN OUR TRAILS, THE ARENA AT THE PARK , TRAYLOR
RANCH AND THE RURAL LIFESTYLE
Howdy!
What an exciting summer the LBHA is having! We’ve had some great arena and Traylor Ranch meetings, and been very lucky with the weather, too. Don't forget our "Free Ride" meeting in August at the arena. Come get to know our members and their horses, learn some things from
the interesting folks that attend, and make some new friends along the way!
The trails are all in great condition so I hope you are all taking advantage of them. I’ve been out to Traylor Ranch a few times this summer to enjoy a bit
of nature. Alas, it’s time for me to get back to work.
We’ve got our October horse shows coming up and I can’t stress enough how badly we are in need of volunteers to help out and get us organized. This is such a fun weekend for everyone, including our volunteers, and it’s heartwarming to see the kids out there with their animals enjoying the day.
This is how it all begins.
I want to thank all of you that stepped up during the Robbers fire in Forest-hill. Animal Control contacted me for volunteers to house horses and even though we weren't needed thank goodness, when I asked our members to help out, many called myself or Animal Control directly to offer a pasture or stall. Amazing what one post on Facebook will do in time of crisis. Those of
you who don't believe in Social Networking, think again.
Pigeon Fever (Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis) is on the rise or "tis the season" so fly control is of utmost importance. Make sure your partners are protected. You can read more at Loomis Basin Veterinary Clinic Face-
book page. https://www.facebook.com/#!/LBEMC

TRAYLOR RANCH NATURE RESERVE
Our 4th workday for the year at Traylor Ranch
Nature Reserve was on Saturday July 28th. It
was one of our smallest turnouts ever but we powered on.
Great help from Maureen Henderson and Wes
Babcock on the weedwackers. Mary Westfall and Jennifer Wright covered the well used sec-
tions of the trail filling gopher holes and doing
major blackberry vine pruning. We were down
to one tractor so I was only able to mow half of the park. I'll be back in a week or two and mow
the rest.
I'd like to make special note of a special volun-teer. Wes Babcock has been volunteering his
time at TRNR since it's inception. Almost on a
daily basis he walks the park not just for exer-
cise but keeping tabs on anything out of order. He's also the go to guy for the irrigation system.
Wes, on behalf of all those who use the park,
thank you very much for all your help.
The park is in great shape. Come out and enjoy
it. If you remember to bring a berry basket you'll find some nice pickings.
Our next work day as usual is the fourth satur-
day of the month, which is Saturday August 25 from 8-12am. We will again need help on the
weed-wackers and berries.
If anyone has any questions or comments on
TRNR, please don't hesitate to drop me a note.

Engineering Geology of new facility in Penryn forEngineering Geology of new facility in Penryn for
2013 Loomis Basin Equine Medical Clinic2013 Loomis Basin Equine Medical Clinic June 2012 Earthwork and Site Grading
by Robert H. Sydnor California Certified Engineering Geologist #968
Fellow of the Geological Society of America AERC Trail Master; LBHA Board of Directors
On June 7, 2012, the ground was broken for the long-awaited new facility for Loomis Basin Equine Medical Center at 2973 Penryn Road near Interstate 80 in Penryn. Earthwork has continued throughout mid-June. The year-long site con-struction will involve five phases: ① earthwork and site grading; ② concrete foundations, underground utilities, septic
system; ③ architectural construction (framing, drywall, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and roofing); ④ landscaping, asphalt
paving, drainage basins; and ⑤ installation of high-tech medical equipment for our horses. This report is about the geology of the site, and summarizes the June 2012 earthwork that transformed a rural hillside
into a modern veterinarian facility scheduled for early 2013.
Regional Geologic Map ( from Wagner and others, 1981, California Geological Survey, Sacramento Quadrangle)
This regional geologic map is centered on southern Placer County, so most equestri-ans within the Loomis Basin Horsemen's Association are affected by these underlying bedrock formations.
Mzd = Mesozoic quartz diorite of the Pen-ryn Pluton of Cretaceous age (± 128-139 million years old). Pink color on this geo-logic map; reddish brown soils in the field; overlying gray granitic plutonic rock. The type locality is the historic Griffith Quarry in Penryn, now a Placer County park.
Tm = Mehrten Formation of Tertiary age (andesite ash flows with rounded cobbles and boulders on ridge crests). Pale orange color on this geologic map; gray rounded boulders in the field.
The Bear Mountains Fault Zone is shown at right. The geologic discovery of this re-gional fault precluded the construction of the proposed Auburn Dam in the late 1970s.
Regional Geologic Map scale 1:250,000
The location of the new Loomis Basin Equine Medical Center is near Penryn. Notice that the geologic formations change rapidly in the vi-cinity of Auburn where Jurassic metavolcanic rocks (green colors) and Jurassic serpentine (purple colors) are tectonically sheared against the Bear Mountains Fault Zone.
LBHA NEWSLETTER PAGE 6
Earthmoving and Site Grading Operations Dr. Jill Higgins, Dr. Langdon Fielding, and Dr. Catherine Jacobs, the principals of the Loomis Basin Equine Medical Center
retained Bair Engineering and Excavating of Newcastle to perform the site grading operations. A highly experienced con-tracting firm, Bair Engineering and Excavating used a full suite of heavy equipment to perform the complicated earthwork in quartz diorite.
This is a type of granitic rock composed of gray plagioclase feldspar, black hornblende, shiny black flecks of biotite, and vitreous quartz. Because black hornblende (a mafic mineral) is susceptible to chemical weathering, most of the quartz dio-rite is deeply weathered, so that it forms a reddish-brown sandy soil (as shown below). Insoluble quartz, SiO2 , with Mohs hardness of 7 and no cleavage, is the survivor in the slow weathering process over tens of thousands of years.
LBHA NEWSLETTER Page 7
The principal workhorse is the Caterpillar tractor which has rippers on the back, and a heavy blade for shearing off
weathered quartz diorite. At right is the 8-ton vibratory compactor operating at 32 Hertz which creates compacted layers to form a fill prism. Like most earthwork projects, this is a volumetrically balanced job, consisting of cut-slopes and fill-prisms, with no imported fill. The water-truck is used to spray water on each vertical layer of loose fill, so that optimum moisture content (typically 10-15%) is achieved during compaction. Fills cannot be properly compacted if bone-dry or wet mud. Oth-erwise, foundation failures due to settlement may potentially occur if the (loose) fill is below 90% relative compaction.
The preliminary engineering geology and geotechnical engineering report used boreholes and backhoe pits to deter-
mine that the underlying granitic rock (quartz diorite) was generally weathered and rippable. But there were exceptions, whereby hard unweathered resistant boulders were encountered. Bair Excavating adroitly
used a large John Deere crane with a giant jack-hammer (shown below) to shatter the hard boulders. A dump-truck was then used to haul the valuable rip-rap boulders to another project for erosion control purposes. The end-result is that the resis-tant boulders were chiseled-out; only smooth pads remain; ready for the subsequent phase of concrete foundations for the equine medical center.
For geologic information about the quartz diorite that forms the Cretaceous Penryn Pluton, visit the nearby Griffith Quarry, a historic Placer County Park. The museum has polished specimens of this important quarry rock that was used for dimension stone and shipped by rail to San Francisco. The Penryn Pluton has been radiometrically dated using the potassium-argon method. These plutonic rocks are about 128 to 139 million years old ( Cre-taceous Period).
