FormForm is considered a positive element,

a solid thing or object.

Page 3: LAYOUT (Intro to GD Wk 9)

SpaceForm is considered negative—not in a bad way, but as

the absence, or opposite, of form. Space is the “ground” in which form becomes a “figure.”

Rule of Thirds

The rule states that an image can be divided into nine equal parts by two equally-spaced horizontal lines and two equally-spaced vertical lines. The four points formed by the intersections of these lines will be points of

focus for the brain.

Musical Logic

Space in typography is like time in music. It is infinitely divisible, but a few proportional intervals can be much more useful than a limitless choice of

arbitrary quantities.

Golden Section

(aka golden ratio, golden triangle)

In mathematics and the arts, two quantities are in the golden ratio if the ratio between the sum of those quantities and the larger one is the same as

the ratio between the larger one and the smaller. The golden ratio is a mathematical constant, approximately 1.6180339887.
