In a secluded corner of JohnFrost Square is a cultural gemwhich thousands pass everyday, many without evenrealizing that it exists. It is ofcourse Newport Museum andArt Gallery. Even those thatknow of it tend to assume thatit is of very little significance, but in fact it houses a collectionof national and internationalimportance. The Museum:Founded in 1888, one of theoldest in Wales. Its collectionbrings the history of Newport andthe surrounding area vividly tolife:-The pre Roman era featuring thetools and other remains of huntergathers who roamed the shoresof the Severn Estuary thousandsof years ago, and the almostcomplete skeleton of an aurochs,an extinct breed of giant cattle. The Roman Collection is one of
the best in Wales featuring findsfrom both Caerleon andCaerwent, including the oldestChristian relic ever found inWales. The Medieval period includesartefacts from the Newport shipand finds from local castles, priories etc.The Chartist Uprising - afantastic array of items from andrelating to the Rising, includingJohn Frost’s pistols.
The Art Gallery:A truly diverse collection, highlights of which includepaintings by Sir Stanley Spencer,Dame Laura Knight and L. S.Lowry together with works byimportant Welsh artists KyffinWilliams and Stanley Lewis. Thereare even some unattributedsketches that may be by Turner. The decorative art collectionincludes a sculpture by Sir JacobEpstein, studio ceramics by Lucy
Rice and Ewen Henderson andthe Iris Fox collection of porcelainand Wemyss ware.

In my regular articles for theDirectories, I alwaysendeavour to recount a storywith a local flavour, preferablyone laced with jokes andquirky asides. I will not do soon this occasion as I have asimple plea to make. But first,I want to tell you about one ofmy dearest friends.
I met Rick at university: we lived
in the same halls of residence,
me on the top floor and he on
the ground. I can't even recall
how I got to know him but Rick
was at ease talking to everyone.
As he got older, his waistline
might have expanded and his
hair might have abandoned its
coppery flame of youth but his
sense of fun and infectious
enthusiasm remained
undiminished. He was loved
and respected by all, including
my parents who, I am sure,
would have liked to have
adopted him!
After graduating, Rick moved
around with work but he was
regular visitor to our home in
Newport, often dropping in on
his way down to the West
Country where his family lived
or en route to Cardiff if he had
meetings there. He drove a red
Chrysler for many years, which
he christened "Scarlet O'Cara"
and he would frequently bring
along some of his delicious
homemade bara brith: another
reason why I always looked
forward to seeing him.
Rick worked for various
environmental organisations
and was also a volunteer for
different charities, often making
long drives across Europe to
Romania in order to deliver
donated supplies. Each
Christmas Day would be spent,
in part, at a homeless shelter
that provided hot dinners for
those in need. He was also a
magistrate and on one
occasion, I had the pleasure of
watching him in action. Once
the court was in session, this
gentle giant, who would more
likely than not, greet you with a
big bear hug, became a
formidable presence.
Defendants and solicitors
quivered as Rick unleashed
withering reprimands but as
soon as we were outside
together, he reverted to his
normal, placid demeanour,
much like the Hulk shrinking
back into Bruce Banner.
As if to counterbalance his
enviable accomplishments, Rick
lost his mum when he was still
in his twenties and more
recently, his father suffered a
stroke and lived in a nursing
home. Having no siblings, Rick
sold his own property and
moved back to the family house
to be closer to his dad. When I
saw him last, he mentioned
finding it difficult dealing with
his dad's condition but he
quickly steered us into more
light-hearted waters. It was a
momentary glimpse beneath his
happy-go-lucky exterior but the
thing about Rick was that he
was a very private person,
never wanting to burden anyone
with his own problems.
His dad died earlier this spring
and tragically, Rick took his own
life the same week. He was 48
years old. It is particularly tragic
that Rick had given so much
support to those with mental
health issues but when he
needed it most, we - his friends
- were oblivious. So I have an
appeal to make. No matter how
bad things get, whether there is
a personal tragedy, a
relationship breakdown,
financial worries, or concerns
about exams, it is crucial to talk
to someone before doing
something that cannot be
undone. Similarly, if you are
aware of somebody who might
be at risk, don't wait to be
asked for help. It is better to
offer and be rebuffed than to
delay and discover it's too late
to intervene. There was never a
more beloved, cheerful, and
outgoing character as Rick and
if it can happen to him, then
given the right circumstances,
we are all at risk.
A Simple PleaBy Paul Minton

We seek to be Word-centred and gospel-driven.The Word of God is crucial! The ministry of Grace Baptist Assembly will, we trust, alwayskeep God’s Word central. Why? The Holy Bible is God’s written Word; it is how He has
chosen to communicate to us who He is, what He has been doing, and what He expects ofus. The Bible alone holds the ultimate, most trustworthy, most authoritative answers to the
questions of life and eternity. Thus, rather than magnifying the ideas of mere human beings, we look instead to God, trusting that He inspired and preserved His Word for Hisglory and our good. We believe that the written Word is a reflection of the Living Word,Jesus Christ, and that its contents are our reliable, sufficient rule of faith and practice.
When a moral question is raised, or when we face a difficult circumstance, we choose toresort to the Bible for guidance, correction or comfort, rather than falling back on our own
experiences and opinions.
We seek to be traditional in our message. We hold to historical Baptist distinctives. Specifically, we are fond of The First London Baptist Confession of Faith, 1646 edition. We gladly accept broken, unaccomplished,
needy sinners like ourselves; but we are not seeker-driven. We do not believe that ‘doingchurch’ is what God requires of people, and we do not believe that it is this or any other
local church’s responsibility to water down, nor add to, the gospel of Jesus Christ in orderto create a more ‘comfortable’ environment. Do we want that gospel [good news] to be
understandable? Yes. Do we ourselves want to be compassionate and inclusive? Yes. Wewant broken people - people like us - who know their sinfulness. We are here for those who
know that they need something more than what this life has to offer. We seek not to offermore of the same, but to offer something different. The person and work of Jesus Christ is
enough for us. We invite you to come see why.
We seek to be relevant in our vision. We maintain that the Bible is more than a collection of ancient writings, but rather, it
contains everything we need to face the problems of life in today’s culture. Consequently, our teaching and preaching will include practical application to help us live as we ought to
live. We are not an elite group of those who have ‘arrived’ and we are committed to continual change. We rest on and submit to the absolute, unchanging truth of the Bible;
and it in turn changes us. We hear and meditate on God’s Word - and while we do that, wetry to be doers of that Word, and not hearers only. We have found that the unchangingtruths of the Bible affect our everyday lives, and we pray that we will become more and
more like Jesus Christ as we submit to and obey His Word.

For today’s retirees, retirement has changedalmost beyond recognition since their parents’day. Building a retirement fund requires savingenough money to pay your bills and continueliving comfortably when you are no longerdrawing an income. The thought of it may be daunting; it can feel likean impossible mission. But with early planning, building up your nest egg is more discipline thandifficult. The process of building a retirement fundtypically involves a combination of consistentsaving and long-term investments. But first, youhave to figure out how much you need in order toset a goal.
FUNDS TO LIVE LIFE TO THE FULL INRETIREMENTRetirement is an exciting period in life. You mightbe looking forward to taking a trip to somewhereyou’ve always wanted to go, dedicating moretime to a favourite hobby or spending more timewith family and friends. However, many peoplefeel concerned about not having the funds to livelife to the full in retirement. Making sure you haveenough money to enjoy your retirement is amatter of sensible planning and being proactive.Ask yourself, what decisions can I make today tostart preparing for retirement? Investing evensmall amounts of money on a regular basis inpreparation for retirement could leave you with alarger nest egg.
HEAD START ON A RETIREMENT NEST EGGInvesting for growth is suited to those who wantto get a head start on a retirement nest egg butwon’t be retiring until further into the future. If yourgoal is to invest for growth, this means that youare more focused on growing your initialinvestment over a medium-to-long period of time(five years plus) and do not intend to use theinvestment to boost your current monthly income. For those investing for growth, investing as far inadvance as possible from when they plan to startwithdrawing the investment should give theirfunds the best chance of maximum growth.
A TIME WHEN YOU HAVE STOPPED WORKINGSetting up a retirement goal requires you to findout how much income you’ll need when you have
stopped working. As part of the planning process, you’ll need to consider answers to questions suchas: ‘At what age do you plan to retire?’, ‘Howmany years should you plan to be in retirement?’and ‘What is your desired monthly income duringretirement?’ Your retirement fund needs certainty– you can’t risk losing your savings because youneed it as a stable income. So how can onebalance the need for growth with certainty ofreturns when building a retirement fund?
TIME HORIZONGenerally, a bigger portion of your retirementportfolio can be apportioned to higher-riskinvestments if you start in your twenties. As youprogress nearer towards the retirement years, your portfolio should increasingly focus oninvestments that are a lower risk and providemore stable returns.
You can consider allocating your investments intoproducts suitable for different investment horizons(short, medium and longer term) depending onyour risk appetite. For example, a short-terminvestment can include some riskier assets suchas single equities or investing in a fast-growingspeciality fund. You should always be remindedthat with higher expected returns come higherrisks.
BUILD YOUR RETIREMENT FUNDSPlanning for your retirement can seem like adaunting process. Keep in mind that there are nohard and fast formulas to how you build yourretirement funds, but keeping the above factors inmind will definitely help you work towardsachieving your retirement goals.
Plan for the life you wantBuilding up your nest egg is more discipline than difficult

Houses in Newport Are in Great DemandEveryone wants to live here! Well, that’s not strictly
true but according to recent statistics issued by
HM Land Registry, house prices in Newport
rose last year by the second highest rate of annual
growth percentage (10.5%) for all local authorities
throughout the UK.
Average Property Prices in Newport Increased in
2018 to £175,447.John Newell, owner of Kingston Newell Estate Agents is not surprised by the continued increase in demand for properties in the area. He said, “It was only last year that Newport was named as the UK’s fastest moving property market and sales of houses throughout the region have remained very strong with many houses selling on the same day they are listed and going to sealed bids.
Whilst some have been sceptical about the impact of the abolition of the Severn Bridge tolls, we have sold a lot of houses to private buyers and investors who are keen to take advantage of the comparative cheaper house prices here.”
Allt-Yr-Yn is One of the Most Popular AreasCommenting on the local market, John said, “Looking at our own sales figures, we know that Langstone in the east of the city and Allt-Yr-Yn in the west are areas in high demand with properties being snapped up very quickly not only by those looking to move to the area from Bristol but also from Cardiff where again the house prices here provide much better value for money.
No Sale – No Fee and Our Price Match PromiseWe pride ourselves on our local knowledge of the property market and our ability to sell houses for our clients hence us being more than happy to offer you a No Sale – No Fee arrangement and a promise to price match other quotes you might have received to sell your house from our high street competitors.

The object of sudoku is to insert the missing numbers in the boxes to

1 through to 9 exactly once. This can bedone by applying logic – you do not have to

SWAN RESCUE
Even after almost 40 years ofinvolvement with swans, wecontinue to be surprised bysome of the things whichhappen. On 7th March it wasreported from the Pond atBrynmawr (overlooked byAsda), that the 5 cygnets wereunder pressure from the adults. At this time of year, with thestart of the new breedingseason just round the cornerthis is normal; the adult male inparticular is serving notice onthe young birds that it is time toleave. Failure to do so ispotentially fatal. The following day, on arrival atBrynmawr, all was peaceful, except that, by this time, therewere only four cygnets. Over theyears we have had significantinvolvement at the nearbyMachine Pond so we decided itwas worth checking to see what ifanything was going on there.Good job we did, as we were metwith an extraordinary situation.Clearly, this is the territory ofanother swan family into which, itappears the missing ‘Asda’cygnet had strayed, but there wasonly one adult present, assumed, based on our observations fromsome distance, to be a female. The intruder had been chased uponto the far bank by one, quicklyfollowed by another of theresident cygnets. The intensity ofthe chase increased as all threebirds re-entered the water, andwere fast coming our way. Verysoon, we lost sight of them asthey beached on the near shoresomewhere far below us at thebottom of a very steep bank.Clearly it was time to intervene.Equipped with just a swan hook
and a swan wrap, the descent ofthe bank was a hazardousbusiness, it being both steepand slippery in places, combined with the fear of aturned ankle or worse.Approaching the bottom, there was no obvious sign ofswans, apart from the adultand two cygnets on the water, butthe immediate view was restrictedby a number of gorse bushesnear the water’s edge. And then, one’s eye was caughtby sizeable smudges of grey andwhite under one of those bushes. The feeling of somethingapproaching panic was all tooapparent as it was not at all clearit would be possible to interveneeffectively, especially as theterrain was pretty challenging.Somehow we managed to moveto the far side of the bush todiscover one cygnet on top of theother and gripping its neck in itsbeak. They separated on myappearance, the assailantescaping onto the water, and thevictim secured by the swan hook.Phew!!! What a relief!Despite the ferocity of what hadhappened, the cygnet we had
caughtseemed unhurt, and from longexperience, we do know they arevery resilient, with what seem likealmost immediate powers ofrecovery. We have no doubttherefore we did the right thing intaking him for release at TheKnap in Barry. Almostimmediately, he was surroundedat close quarters by a bevy ofmainly juveniles, but a couple ofadults as well; all very friendly, sothis combined with the witnessingof a cygnet on cygnet attack wasa totally new experience for us.You can never tell what’s going tohappen next!

The highest upstream ofthe series of dams in theElan Valley, is often
referred to as the 'top dam'. Itis located at a height of 1040feet (317m) above sea level. Aswith all the dams, work startedwith the arrival of the railwayline at the site. Work onexcavating the foundations for
a secure base for the structurestarted in July 1897, somethree years after the start ofwork on the lowest dam atCaban Coch.Craig Goch is seen by many asthe most attractive of thedams, with an elegantly curvedretaining wall and a series ofarches. It has a domed valve
tower and the structure istypical of the 'BirminghamBaroque' style of much of thewaterworks scheme. When we visited the dam inFebruary 2014 the water wascascading over the top anddown the spillways. Well worthand trip and only 1 ½ hoursfrom Newport.

In 1978 a group of three,Malcolm Pritchard, MervinJones and Ray Norris werehaving a little sing song oftheir own. As a result theythought ‘Why don’t we startour own choir’. Thus theseeds were sewn and peoplewere asked if they wereinterested. There was atremendous response and theseeds ‘ripened’ with theformation of The AlcanSingers. Special thanks go toMalcolm Pritchard, SheelaghYoung (pianist),Derek Terry andTerry Browning(treasurer) whowere key membersof the group.Having now gotenough interest theAlcan Singers wereformed. However atfirst things were noteasy! The choir realisedthey badly needed apiano. A piano which wasavailable was found andprovided by the Alcan ClubCommittee but was located inthe Tydu area of Rogerstone. Inthe absence of any transportthe piano was pushed down themain road to the Alcan Club. There was a pause in front ofthe Alcan main Office blockwhere some ‘tinkling of theivories’ took place together witha few renditions for the officeworkers. Having the piano inplace the Singers realised thatthey needed someone to play it!To the rescue came Ray Norriswho was the first pianist for theSingers followed by Bill Daviesin later years and then SheelaghYoung who had previously beenconductor. Some of the
memberswho acted as ‘comperes’ over
the years were Peter Faulkner,Andre Claridge and JimmyWilliams. It is impossible to name all ofthe many members who weremembers of the group over theforty years but some of theearlier members were Les Reed,Edward Lee, Brian Jones, JohnMaybury, Cecil Wilcox andmany more, while some of thenewer members were DesAndrews, Mike Powell, RobertBassett and Keith Lee.Over a period of exactly 40years the singers performedat well over 1000 eventswhich included concerts, visits to old people’s homes, weddings, hospitals andfunerals. The singers provided afantastic voluntary service
to Rogerstone and thesurrounding communities. Sadlyhowever, due to dwindlingnumbers, all too common thesedays in sports organisationsand other bodies, the Singershad to stop functioning in 2018after 40 years of voluntaryservice to the community. Therewere many others involved withthe Singers who are not namedbut are equally appreciated. Finally, a special word forMalcolm Pritchard who is theonly person who started fromday one and was present to theend. Malcolm had many rolesfrom one of the founders, singerand conductor when needed.Thank you Alcan Singers for 40magnificent years of voluntarycommunity service!

SALENOWON
Every year our W.I. chooses acharity to support, and thisyear our charity is Mind, anorganisation that offersinformation and support tothose living with, or thosecaring for, someone whosuffers with mental healthproblems. There can be fewof us whose lives have notbeen touched in some way bymental health issues; perhapsourselves, family or friends. Itis, of course an unseendisease until itmanifests itself in someform of bizarrebehaviour or language oracute depression. Drugscan of course stabiliseconditions but sadlypeople who suffer fromthese illnesses oftenforget medication if thereis no one on hand toprompt or remind them. With these thoughts
uppermost in our minds, our
programme secretaries decided
that a social evening would be a
great way of raising funds for
such a worthy cause. In
February, thanks largely to their
efforts Rogerstone Roses held
an Italian themed evening
‘Carnivale.’
The menu was lasagne with
salad and lemon tart as dessert.
The tables were beautifully
decorated in the colours of the
Italian flag, small flags
decorated a green and white
table decoration which held a
tall white candle. The hall
looked truly magnificent. To
encourage our members to
think all things Italian there was
a quiz on every table including
famous faces, types of pasta
and Beatles song titles in
Italian.
The evening was an enormous
success, the food was
excellent, the quiz a little taxing
but enjoyable, I obviously have
to look more closely at the
pasta section when I next go
shopping, and of course the
chance to talk to friends and
acquaintances is always a treat
as meetings are often busy.
Members had been
exceptionally generous and
provided numerous prizes for
the raffle, this combined with
the profits from the supper
allowed us to make an
incredible amount in excess of
£500 for our charity.
So, what an evening, not only
did we make a very credible
donation for Mind but all
members had a truly splendid
evening.
Over the next weeks we have
some great evenings planned,
Lorna Pearson, AKA the
Chuckle Lady, is returning to
entertain us with a programme
called appropriately ‘Easter
Chuckles.’ The chaplain from
Usk prison the Rev. David
Womersley is on the
programme as is The Black
Mountain Falconry and a talk
on digital photography.
If you think you might be
interested in any of these topics
do come along, we meet on the
second and fourth Tuesday of
every month, members arrive
from 7pm onwards for a coffee
or tea and a chat and the
meeting starts at 7.30pm.
