Explore the Rockport Cultural District, among the first to be designated in Massachusetts and one of four on Cape Ann. Scan the QR code on the back panel and download the new mobile app to learn more about all of Cape Ann’s cultural districts: Essex River, Harbortown, Rockport and Rocky Neck. Rockport has something special to offer in every season. Rockport Music presents superlative musical entertainment all year long at the Shalin Liu Performance Center while Rockport Art Association offers multiple exhibits, galleries and art shows throughout the year. Annual events include May’s Motif #1 Day and Memorial Day parade; the Firemen’s July 4 Parade and Bonfire; summertime Farmers’ Markets; August’s Lobsterfest and Fireworks; October’s Rockport HarvestFest; this year’s 31st annual Christmas in Rockport celebration; and New Year’s Rockport Eve. Explore Rockport's rugged yet accessible shoreline as you journey along the Essex Coastal Scenic Byway (Routes 127 and 127A). Nearly half of this 85 mile drive takes you in and around Cape Ann, with over nine miles in Rockport alone. From a Twin Lights sunrise at Long Beach to sunsets over Ipswich Bay at Halibut Point, you can spend a delightful day or a whole lifetime meandering Rockport's pathways and trails. Its unique mix of light and sea and sky, granite-edged harbors and coves, and sweeping tides, creates memorable and constantly renewing vistas at every turn. Through the years and the cycles of the seasons, Rockport’s beauty and allure endure. The Blue Gate Park and Ride facility seasonally offers 200 free parking spaces and a $1 trolley shuttle direct to downtown and Front and Back Beaches and includes stops at Rockport’s MBTA train station. It is conveniently located on Route 127, just one-half mile from downtown. If you arrive by train, follow the new color-coded Green, Red and Blue Diamonds painted on the sidewalks leading from the station to downtown Rockport. Choose among the Beaches (Green: King and Beach Streets), Main Street (Red), or Broadway (Blue) Routes; all are scenic and welcoming walkways to and from the center of our beautiful town. Welcome to Rockport! We invite you to explore the historic sites and natural beauty of Rockport. WALK ONE The Headlands

and Old Garden PathFrom Dock Square, proceed up Mount PleasantStreet, passing T-Wharf with its view of Motif#1 on your left. You will soon pass theHannah Jumper House, a small white housewith blue shutters just before turning left ontoAtlantic Avenue. While strolling up this Avenue, pause for scenic views of the Rockport Harborand the Yacht Club. Straight ahead, enter apaved path called “Way to Headlands”.

Hannah Jumper House: This white housewith its blue shutters was the home of HannahJumper, who led the women of Rockport in thefamous Hatchet Gang Raid of July 8th, 1856.Subsequently, Rockport became a dry town, andremained so until 2005, when voters approvedthe sale of alcoholic beverages in local restau-rants.

Headlands: A Rocky outcrop offering spectacular views of the harbor and the town. This is a famous place for artists and a greatspot for a picnic at sunset or for viewing sailboatraces on weekend afternoons.

Leave the Headlands out the back side ontoOld Garden Road; continue several hundredyards to Old Garden Beach. Old Garden pathis accessed from the beach when sandy bygoing up the wooden stairs on the rock wall tothe right of the beach. If not easily accessiblewalk past the beach and onto the foot pathbetween the second and third house on theleft, this will bring you between the privatehomeowners’ land and the ocean along a short1/2 mile seaside walk to Marmion Way. At thispoint you can turn right to South Street and fol-low the sidewalk back to town. For an extend-ed walk turn left onto Marmion Way and mean-der through this neighborhood of oceanfront

homes, B & B’s, and gracious Inns with beauti-ful flowering gardens. At the intersection ofMarmion Way and South, turn right and followsidewalk back into town.

WALK TWO Bearskin Neck

Stroll from Dock Square, to Bearskin Neck, with its many colorful shops, restaurants, andart galleries. Explore Bradley Wharf and TunaWharf, the first and second rights along yourway. Proceed to the end of the Neck for apanoramic view of the Atlantic Ocean and thebreakwater. Return to Dock Square via Doyle’sCove Road and either Middle Road or NorthRoad. At the end of North Road, take a right onOld Harbor Road to Sea Fencibles Park andWhite Wharf for a view of the Old Harbor. 20minute walk, or if you shop?

Bradley Wharf: The former site of a schoonerboat building yard. Throughout its history, thewharf has been used primarily by fishermen.Motif #1 is located on Bradley Wharf.

Motif #1: The ultimate artist’s subject of theNew England coast. This humble fishing shackwas built in 1884. Artists began painting thisshack in the mid-19th century and was itdubbed Motif #1 by Lester Hornby. In 1945 itwas purchased by the town as a monument toRockporters in the armed services. In 1978 ablizzard destroyed the Motif but the townrebuilt it. The distinctive red paint was nolonger available so a new formula was devel-oped to replicate the character of the building. In 1992 a series of storms weakened BradleyWharf and Motif #1 was moved back so thegranite pier could be repaired. Whenever youpaint or photograph Motif #1 you are honoringthe spirit of Rockport.

Tuna Wharf: Built in 1884 for the landing

and processing of cod fish. Around 1950, largecatches of tuna fish were being landed, whichgave the wharf its present name.

Sandy Bay Breakwater: Visible from the endof Bearskin Neck and 1.5 miles out to sea. Thispartially completed breakwater was an unsuc-cessful attempt by the Government in 1885 tomake Rockport a major Atlantic shipping port.

WALK THREE Main St., Beach St.,

and Millbrook MeadowFrom Dock Square walking up Main Street stopfor a visit to Lumber Wharf on your right. Youwill pass the Rockport Art Association andthe Congregational Church on your left, fol-lowed by the new Shalin Liu PerformanceCenter on your right. Old Sloop Congregational Church: (1803)During the War of 1812, a British frigate in theharbor fired at and missed the bell (which hadbeen rung to alarm the town). The shot landed inthe tower support instead, and, if you look closely, can still be seen!

Old Tavern Building: (now the Rockport ArtAssociation, since 1929) Built before 1787, this

building has served the town as a residence, aninn, and restaurant terminus for the Rock -port/Salem stagecoach run.

Shalin Liu Performance Center: Rockport'sintimate 330-seat oceanside music hall, openedin 2010, is a center for cultural events yearround. Specially designed for chamber music, the Shalin Liu offers audiences superbacoustics, clear sightlines, and a close connec-tion to performers. A floor-to-ceiling glass win-dow serves as the stage’s backdrop, with mag-nificent views of the ocean and Rockport’scoastline.

Millbrook Meadow: A lovely green park withspecimen trees, shrubs, and plants, a granitekeystone bridge, and granite stairs in memoryof the quarry workers. There was once a pumporgan factory, and even a grist mill in theMeadow. There are two ponds to sit and relaxby and a small playground for the children.

Historical Society: This Granite buildingerected in the mid-1800s by a quarry ownerfeatures a beautiful center stairway, originalpump organ from Rockport, historic artifactsand a “must see” kitchen!
