PRINCIPALS REPORTCongratulations to our Year 9 students who completed the peer support training course recently. The course it designed to support our students in becoming excellent peer mentors for the incoming Year 7, 2020. Well done to all involved. The HSC exams continue this week. BONZA BONANZA! On Thursday 24 October our show team loaded their gear and steers onto a semi-trailer kindly donated by Birch Transport and 19 students onto a bus and travelled to Scone to compete at the Upper Hunter Beef Bonanza against 417 steers and 800 students from 60 schools from across the state. Arriving in Scone, our team set about preparing our steers bedding, and our gear, swags and camping area. The steers were washed, blow dried and put to bed. On Friday morning students participated in a range of workshops including artificial insemination, embryo transfer, meat tasting/cooking methods, structure, fitting, marketing, rope tying and low stress stock handling. After lunch Tara Schaefer, Stephanie Davies, Casey Walker, Angus Kelly, George Mitton, Hugo Fenton, Faith White and Tatianna Hazell travelled to the abattoirs to participate in the intercollegiate meat judging competition, where they were assessed on identifying different meat cuts and judging carcases. Following an early dinner, students from Years 10 to 12 attended a careers evening, where they had the opportunity to listen to a range of professionals in the agricultural industry tell their stories and how they overcame challenges to reach their goals in life. Saturday was the big day kicking off at 5.00 am to prepare the steers for judging. At 8.00 am we started the day strongly, winning Reserve Champion Lightweight Steer. Over the next few hours we received a range of placings including a 1st place, two 3rd places and a 5th placing with every steer making the front line. Following on from the steer judging, the 12 years, 13 years and 14 years paraders took to the ring in various heats. James Hazell received 1st place in his heat, Charli O’Byrne placed 2nd, Dylan Beasley, Jaxon Stock and Oscar Schaefer all placed 4th and Hamish Birch, Rhys Hughes and Amelia Squires placed 5th in their heats.Sunday commenced with junior judging with students assessing bulls, heifers and steers and listening to a career talk upon each rotation. Oscar Schaefer was awarded 5th place in the 14 years judging competition. Upon the completion of the junior judging, it was the 15 years, 16 years and 17 years paraders turn in the ring. Stephanie Davies received 1st place in her heat, Angus Kelly, Tatianna Hazell and Tara Schaefer receive 2nd place in their heats and Hugo Fenton placed 3rd. Stephanie then competed against the winners from the other 11 heats of 16 year olds and was announced as Champion 16 years parader. Stephanie then competed against the champions from each age group to be awarded the biggest title of the show, Grand Champion Parader of the 2019 Upper Hunter Beef Bonanza. Congratulations to all of our team for their efforts. The steers were then yarded, tears were shed as we said goodbye to them and now we wait to hear the results of the carcase competition. Following the completion of the competition, the students, Miss Whale, Mrs Kuhn and Scott & Cathy Birch all headed home with a new herd of cattle on the truck, ready to start the process all over again for Sydney Royal Easter Show 2020! A big thank you again to Birch’s Transport for transporting our cattle to and from Scone and the Grenfell community and businesses for your continued support of our show team. We couldn’t do it without you!

A reminder about our attendance policy

Students who are away should return a signed note to the office on the first day back after their absence; otherwise the roll is marked ‘A’ for unexplained/unjustified absence. This will appear on their report. Students who wish to leave school during the day for appointments should give a note to the deputy principal before school. The student will be signed out by the deputy for the required period of time. Students will be issued with a special leave pass for that period of time. If you require your child to be picked up by someone other than yourself or a listed emergency contact, we will need your written permission in advance. We are unable to allow students to leave the school without proper authorisation.

ASSESSMENT INFORMATION FOR YEARS 9 TO 12, PARENTS AND CARERSTo meet the NESA RoSA (Record of School Achievement) requirements, students must show due diligence to complete classwork and assessment tasks. If students fail to submit tasks by the due date, parents will be sent an “N” Award warning letter that stipulates submission of all tasks is necessary to meet course completion requirements. This is specifically relevant to students in Years 9 to 12. The school has set up SAS (School Assessment Support) and this is an opportunity for students who have late and outstanding tasks to receive help from teachers to complete their tasks (all students are welcome to attend and use this time to finish assessment tasks). SAS runs every day during the second half of lunch in the computer room and is staffed by a teacher to assist students with their tasks. UNEXPECTED ILLNESS OR EXCEPTIONAL CIRCUMSTANCES In case of unexpected illness or exceptional circumstances, the submission of a task on the due date is the student’s responsibility. If for some reason a student is unable to attend school on the day a task is due, they must make arrangements for someone else to hand the task in for them (eg. sibling, parent, neighbour etc.) on the due date. If this is not possible, students or parents must contact the school as soon as possible. A Assessment Task Illness/Misadventure and Extension Form may be started with the Head Teacher Assessment. The form must be accompanied by evidence (such as a medical certificate or police report). Arrangements will be made with you and your parents/carers to fulfil assessment requirements as soon as possible after your return to school.Students and parents need to read the Stage 5, Preliminary or HSC assessment booklets for specific information regarding non-submission of tasks. All students from Years 9 to 12 have been issued with an assessment guidelines booklet. Students who have outstanding assessment tasks may not be able to represent the school in sporting or community events.

GRENFELL AMATEUR SWIMMING CLUB NEWSLETTERThe first night of the 2019/20 season has been completed. It was great to see so many competitors eager to get back in the pool for another season. A big welcome to all of our new swimmers too!ONLINE ENTRIESPlease keep checking your emails as details on how to enter for each Club night will be sent out shortly. We are hoping to have online entries up and running next week and we will send out “How to ..” information via email. In readiness for online entries we would like to ask all members/swimmers to check that their calendar displays events (these will show up as dots on the calendar-if you look at 30 Nov/01 Dec you should be able to find Parkes carnival). Parents, please make sure that you check for each of your children. This is how you will access online entries for club nights and other carnivals – we think! Please let me know if you think you have a problem with this. We remind swimmers and parents that you can only enter in the distance that the referees have approved each swimmer for. If the competitor is entered in the wrong distance they will be moved back to the correct distance. This decision was made by the Committee last year, in consultation with the referees, with the view of further developing the junior swimmers stroke technique before they progress to a longer distance. As with last year your child must begin in the 15m and cannot progress to the 25m or 50m distances in any stroke unless they are advised by the referees of their progression.FUNDRAISING OPPORTUNITYWe have been approached by the Tennis Club who are prepared to give the Swimming Club $1,000.00 if we can arrange for 20-30 people to help spread sand at the Tennis Club towards the end of November 2019.
