This year we are offering 60+ outstanding performance bred Angus bulls at our 2014 Roma Sale. We have moved our Sale date to 15th August and the Sale will be conducted by Landmark. The early Sale will suit some breeders wanting bulls earlier to give them more time to adapt and for others it is still a while to the big rains due at the end of this year!

This years’ proven Angus AI sires include the very best in terms of balanced calving ease, high growth and feed conversion and superior feedlot performance and carcase quality. These sires include Lawsons Novak E313, Dunoon Evident E614, Ayrvale Bartel E7, Henry VIII, Lawsons Tank B1155, Lawsons Dinky-Di Z191 and Te Mania Africa A217.

In our program these Breedplan figures are extremely accurate and the best way to compare animals. While others taking the easy and often deceptive path of promoting on actual weights and phenotype, we will continue on the road to making progress based on “Science, not Fiction”.

The accuracy of our Breedplan information comes from the fact that we have diligently measured and recorded how animals perform and rank in large contemporary groups under tough commercial conditions for over 45 years. No other herd has the numbers or predictability of Lawsons Angus, no other herd has run a 100% AI/ET disciplined program for twenty years!

In a recent bull trial in WA Lawsons Angus yearling bulls once again had the highest feed conversion results on a 60 day feedlot trial, which was also high roughage so it was safe for young bulls. The bulls gained 2.8kg/day on a high roughage ration. Brett Page, Paul O’Meahan & Sons Feedlot Manager, at Borden Western Australia, close out report quoted “Feed Conversion Rate 4.35 kg feed per kg of gain on a 100% Dry Matter basis. The best steers in the same feedlot have done 5.5 to 6.0”. All feedlots that have fed Lawsons Angus genetics comment on the performance and feed conversion of Lawsons Angus genetics.

GENETICS IS AN IMPORTANT PART OF STAYING COMPETITIVE IN A GLOBAL BEEF INDUSTRY

Through careful selection and a global approach to sire selection, which includes our partnership with Gardiner Angus Ranch (GAR) in Kansas, we continue to make progress in producing cattle that are not only tough and hardy but perform in a diverse range of environments. All our clients make comment on the predictable ease of calving and the “bounce back” factor after tough times. Even in Russia where our bulls have worked twice a year and been out doors in minus 33 degrees the Senior Miratorg Livestock Manager has commented on the fact our bulls have adapted better than most of the US bulls even though the US bulls had experienced the northern hemisphere winter prior to going to Russia. Some of this we attribute to genetics and the fact we have paddock reared bulls and run our cows in large mobs under tough grazing conditions.

We also appreciate the great feedback from our Queensland clients including one who I rang last year who said “over 10% of my cows have died and another 10% will die when it rains, but I have only found one dead Angus bull of yours and the others are hanging in there a lot better than my Brahman and Santa bulls.”

Another tough year for most Queensland beef producers, which has led to further liquidation of northern beef herds and added financial pressure. We fully understand that many farmers are still in survival mode still and bulls are a long way down the list of priorities. On the positive side those with numbers and quality cattle will be in the box

seat to take advantage of the opportunities that lie ahead with short supply and strong domestic and global demand set to increase cattle prices

the next few years. There are still mixed views on when this will translate into higher returns for farmers, but given both the demand from meat processors, the recovery of Indonesia and the emergence of China as a major importer of Australian beef there is no doubt in our mind the next decade will be good for Australian beef farmers.

Australia needs to take advantage of its comparative advantage in pastoral and pasture based breeding systems. When you look at the challenges in Asia and in the northern hemisphere countries like the US, Europe, Russia and China; Australia has some major advantages in running cattle in year-round grazing systems, albeit the current drought!

THERE IS LOTS OF GOOD INFORMATION ON GENETICS LET’S GET ON AND USE IT!

The last two years we have been fortunate enough to travel to China and Indonesia and involved in some larger beef projects. Australia has so much to offer in terms of livestock

and genetics for slaughter and breeding, but also in regard to human resources and technical expertise. We see so many great farmers in Australia, with such a hard working resilience, especially in Queensland! We do need to lift our game in the area of genetics, as a general rule our adoption of performance genetics is still very low and lots of potential in the north to lift reproductive performance, turn off rates, growth rates off grass and in the feedlot, along with feed conversion and carcase yield.

Recent research in Brazil, reported recently in Beef Central (3 July 2014) emphasizes the importance of cow efficiency in running a profitable breeding enterprise. Reproductive performance remains the number one driver for profitability in beef herds, five times greater in economic importance than growth traits. In most instances selection pressure for efficient cows will enhance all the major profit drivers – including reproduction, turn off rates, feed conversion and liveweight gains.

• Adult cattle slaughter forecast to decrease 9.1%, to 7.6 million head

• Beef and veal production anticipated to decline 8.2%, to 2.17 million tonnes cwt

• Australian cattle herd to decline to 27.5 million head

• Live cattle exports expected to hit 900,000 head, the highest since 2009

• Domestic utilisation expected to ease 10.6%, to 662,000 tonnes cwt

• Beef and veal exports back 7.3%, to 1.02 million tonnes swt

• Japan exports forecast to reach 270,000 tonnes swt

• Exports to the US forecast to be 210,000 tonnes swt, the lowest since 2002

• Shipments to Korea to ease 17% to 120,000 tonnes swt

• China to consolidate as the third largest market, at 155,000 tonnes swt

OVERVIEW OF 2014 SUPPLY AND DEMAND PROJECTIONS

We still hear too much “noise” in terms of claims of genetic superiority with terms like shape, length and other terms used by experienced Industry people. We all like to think most people that have been around cattle can judge what a good type and sound bull looks like, to be blunt this is pretty easy. What is more difficult is to put together numbers of animals (bulls and females) that will get genetically better every year. In most cases when you analyse other herds of any breed real underlying genetic performance, progress is sporadic and usually focused on growth at the expense of calving ease and other drivers of reproductive efficiency like mature cow weight. A quick look at their reference sires normally shows why – lots of sires used, typically mostly home bred bulls and no consistent pattern in what they are selecting for! If the amount of time, resources and money that was spent on showing and feeding bulls (in most cases still way beyond the end point required for optimal bull performance and longevity) in the north was invested in measuring

and performance recording the northern breeding herd would be a whole lot more productive.

There’s so much good research that has been done over the past few decades on genetics, and so little applied to making genetic progress. Genomics will help in some instances, but there is no ‘silver bullet’ or substitute for performance recording and using reproductive technologies like AI/ET to multiply out superior proven sires. It’s quite simple in concept but still not readily adopted by most!

The use of crossbreeding and composites continues to offer northern breeders great opportunities, but it’s equally important not to fall into the ‘bull of the month’ type decision and source genetics from seedstock producers that performance record, measure key economic traits, use Breedplan and use AI and/ET routinely. If Brazil can AI over 12 million beef cows, most using proven performance bulls including a lot of Angus over Nellore cows, then we need to lift our game in Australia and focus on how we can

improve our genetics rather than come up with excuses why it doesn’t apply in northern Australia. We understand it’s tough out there at the moment but we still encourage northern breeders to look harder at their genetics as they are an important part of long term building blocks in the business.

We hope the wet season kicks in early this year and those that have stuck with it reap the rewards and start the long road to recovery.

INFORMATION FOR BULL BUYERS ON RECESSIVE GENETIC CONDITIONSThis is information for bull buyers about the undesirable genetic conditions, Arthrogryposis Multiplex (AM), Neuropathic Hydrocephalus (NH) and Contractual Arachnodactyly (CA).

PUTTING UNDESIRABLE GENETIC RECESSIVE CONDITIONS IN PERSPECTIVEAll breeds of cattle, in fact all mammals including humans, have undesirable genetic conditions. Fortunately, advances in molecular genetics have facilitated the development of DNA tests for their management. Angus Australia is at the forefront of development of strategies to manage undesirable genetic conditions and Angus members are leading the industry with their uptake of this technology.

With today’s DNA tools undesirable genetic conditions can be managed!

WHAT ARE AM, NH AND CA?Arthrogryposis means ‘curved or hooked joints’. Multiplex indicates there are multiple abnormalities associated with the condition. Animals with the NH condition have a large head. Both AM and NH affected calves are not born alive. Whilst; calves affected by CA are born alive and can reproduce, muscle contractures restrict the movement of joints, particularly in the hind legs. Abnormal muscle contracture decreases dramatically as a calf ages, while muscle development always remains poor.

The number of reported observations of AM, NH and CA calves is very low and there is certainly no need for panic.

HOW ARE THE CONDITIONS INHERITED?Research in the U.S. and Australia indicates that AM, NH and CA are simply inherited recessive conditions. This means that a single pair of genes controls the condition. For this mode of inheritance two copies of the undesirable gene need to be present before the condition is seen; in which case you may get an abnormal calf. A more common example of a trait with a simple recessive pattern of inheritance is black and red coat colour.

Animals with only one copy of the undesirable gene (and one copy of the normal form of the gene) appear normal and are known as “carriers”.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN CARRIERS ARE MATED TO OTHER ANIMALS?Carriers, will on average, pass the undesirable gene form to a random half (50%) of their progeny.

When a carrier bull and carrier cow is mated, there should be a 25% chance that the progeny produced will have two normal genes. There should be a 50% chance that the mating will produce a carrier. However, there could be a 25% chance that the progeny have two copies of the undesirable gene.

If animals tested free of the undesirable gene are mated to carrier animals the condition will not be expressed at all. All calves will appear normal, but approximately half (50%) could be expected to be carriers.

For the condition to be expressed the undesirable gene needs to be present on both sides of the pedigree and both the sire and dam need to be a carrier.

HOW IS THE AM AND NH STATUS OF ANIMALS REPORTED?A DNA-based test has been developed that can be used to determine whether an animal is a carrier or free of the AM, NH or CA gene.

Angus Australia uses sophisticated software to calculate the probability of (all untested) animals to be a carrier. The software uses the test results of any relatives in the calculations and the probabilities may change as new results for additional animals become available.

The genetic status of animals is being reported using five categories:

AMF – Tested AM free

AMFU – Based on pedigree AM free – Animal has not been tested

AM__% – _% probability that the animal may be an AM carrier

AMC – Tested AM-carrier

AMA – AM-Affected

For NH and CA, simply replace AM in the above list with NH or CA.

Registration certificates and the Angus Australia (AA) web-database display these codes. This information is displayed on the animal details page and can be accessed by conducting an “Animal Search” from the Angus Australia website or looking up individual animals listed for sale in a sale catalogue.

The genetic status of an animal is subject to change and will be reanalysed and adjusted each week as DNA test results of relatives are received.

IMPLICATIONS FOR COMMERCIAL PRODUCERS

Your decision on what genetic condition statuses are acceptable will depend on the genetics of your cow herd, (which bulls you previously used), whether you have a straightbreeding or crossbreeding enterprise and whether some female progeny will be retained as breeders.

Angus Australia seedstock breeders are being proactive and transparent in managing these genetic conditions, endeavouring to provide the best information available. The greatest risk to the commercial sector from undesirable genetic recessive conditions comes from unregistered bulls with unknown genetic background. The DNA testing that Angus Australia seedstock producers are investing in provides buyers of registered Angus bulls with unmatched quality assurance.

RECESSIVE GENETIC CONDITIONS

Where a single pair of genes controls a trait or condition it is referred to as a simple recessive trait or condition. There may be several forms of the same gene e.g. black (dominant) and red (recessive) for the colour gene in Angus. These gene forms are called alleles. Two copies of the recessive allele need to be present in an animal for it to be expressed. Both the sire and dam need to be a carrier (have one copy each) to have progeny that have two copies of the recessive allele.

Arthrogryposis Multiplex (AM), Europathic Hydrocephalus (NH) and red colour are examples of recessive conditions and traits in the Angus breed. In animals with only one copy of the recessive allele (and one copy of the dominant allele), the recessive allele isn’t expressed and the animal is known as a “carrier” for the unexpressed trait or condition.

ACCURACY (%) Provides an indication of the reliability of an EBV. As more performance information becomes available on an animal (or it’s progeny, or relatives) then the accuracy of it’s EBVs for particular traits will increase.

CALVING EASE DIR (%) Estimates of the genetic differences between animals in the ability of their calves, from 2 year old heifers, to be delivered without assistance.
