The University of Newcastle Legal Centre is the centre-piece of the Law School’s clinical education program where students have the opportunity to engage with both legal professionals and the community.

Our teaching spaces feature contemporary, technology-enabled facilities, which allow for blended and online teaching methods to be used. From 2017, our teaching facilities will include NeW Space, a state-of-the-art campus in the heart of Newcastle which will incorporate exciting new and interactive teaching spaces.

Hands-on from the startThe Newcastle Law School’s strong focus on experiential legal education integrates the academic study of law with hands-on, clinical practice and professional training.

Students work with real clients and cases at the University of Newcastle Legal Centre and undertake work placement opportunities in the many law firms and organisations in the Hunter region and beyond. Our international immersion tours and placement opportunities run annually to countries such as Thailand and Japan, where you gain an understanding of the legal issues in these countries, as well as an introduction to cultures and customs.

As a student of the Newcastle Law School you will have the chance to work in a team with a supervising lawyer to provide advice to real clients during our annual Law on the Beach clinic. Law on the Beach allows you to gain practical experience by working on real cases from community members at drop-in clinics at Newcastle Beach, throughout January and February each year.

Students from the Newcastle Law School frequently excel in legal competitions including mooting, witness examination and negotiation. Teams of students from the Law School have recently been awarded first place in the UNSW Intervarsity Negotiation Competition; first place in the King and Wood Mallesons Private Law Moot; and the award for best overall oralist in the Ashurst Private Law Moot.

The Bachelor of Laws (Honours) must be combined with another undergraduate degree program. The degree you choose to combine with can be based on your career aspirations, or your general interest. You will complete and graduate with your non-law degree after three years of full-time study with the remaining two years studying laws subjects.

BusinessThe Bachelor of Business gives you a thorough overview of the business environment, nationally and globally. With businesses and corporations subject to extensive regulation, a law degree is a highly valued and useful asset within the business sector.

CommerceA degree in commerce will improve your understanding of important legislation relevant to economics, finance and accounting. Lawyers with commerce expertise are highly valued as in-house lawyers for large companies and government departments.

Social ScienceThe Bachelor of Social Science is ideal if you are interested in improving social justice, anti-discrimination and human rights. Choosing to combine social science and laws equips you to practise as a lawyer or pursue a range of rewarding careers in the field of social science.

CommunicationSeveral legal practice areas focus on the media, communication and technology sectors. Mass media and communication technology are increasingly powerful and influential within our society, meaning associated laws and regulations are constantly developing.

ArtsWith over twenty majors to choose from, a Bachelor of Arts allows you to pursue your interests, whilst also building research capabilities, communication skills, and an understanding of how our society functions.

ScienceWith several majors to choose from, you can tailor you Bachelor of Science to suit a career in law or science. As a legal professional with a background in science, you will be able to apply your scientific knowledge to a range of legal contexts including industry, climate change and forensics.

Aboriginal Professional PracticeThe Bachelor of Aboriginal Professional Practice provides you with an opportunity to improve social justice through a career in Indigenous affairs. What you will study

You will complete your Bachelor of Laws and a second Bachelor degree in just five years of full-time study. You must choose to combine your law degree with aboriginal professional practice, arts, business, commerce, communication, science or social science.

By completing the LLB/Diploma of Legal Practice in the final two years of your degree program, you can be admitted as a lawyer in Australia as soon as you graduate.

Students build practical skills through the University of Newcastle Legal Centre from first year onwards.
