It’s Thanksgiving
– a time to forgetWhile we understand that Elections and Thanksgiving
are two very different topics that do not belong in the samestory, let along in the same sentence, we are going to give ita try.
Having just ended a very ugly electoral period whenthings were said, friendships were broken and our communitywas terribly divided, some people were living under fear.Towards the end, it seemed as if a tragedy could not beaverted.
Fortunately, Election Night came in peace but therumbling of the dissent created by the hard feelingsperseveres.
That is why this Thanksgiving Week is the right time tocall on everyone to push aside favoritisms and recognizewhat we always were: common people who came to thiscountry in search of a better life.
Elections may come and go but we all have to livetogether and we will continue to support and help out oneanother.
Have a very peaceful Thanksgiving Day among yourloved ones!

Si decide beber alcohol, hágalo conmoderación y beba lentamente a sorbos.

As winter approaches, it is time toremind people, especially the children, about safety on the river and theLawrence Police Athletic League isleading the effort.
On Wednesday, November 16th, agroup of children who regularly attendthe South Lawrence East School everyevening to burn calories while doing somehoops received first hand informationabout safety on the river by members ofthe Merrimack Valley Dive Team andLawrence Fire Department.
Rivers are fun places to visit and areimportant to all of us and the environmentin many ways. Rivers can also be verydangerous, and too many people havebeen hurt or drowned because they didnot follow safety rules.
Paul Messineo, from MVDT, showedthe kids about techniques on how tosurvive if they fall in the river, especiallythrough the ice. Messineo’s first warningto the kids was: “Stay away from the river, especially from the ice and if you go, nevergo alone, preferably go with and adult.Tell your parents where you are goingand when you will be home. Say NO topushing or daring others to do dangerousthings.”
Ice is nice, but only on the skating

rink or in cold drinks. Winter is anespecially dangerous time around theriver, particularly if you don’t take thenecessary precautions. The frozen watermay look inviting and safe but accordingto experts, the ice on a river is never evenlyfrozen. It may be thick enough to walk onin patches, but there will always be thinspots where the current is fast, or whereculverts and ditches drain into the river.
Skate with adult supervision in icerinks or shallow, well frozen ponds andleave the rivers for the fish!

More than 200 delegates andmembers of the Merrimack Valley Projectgathered at Central Catholic High School,in Lawrence, on Sunday, November 13, tocelebrate their 14th annual convention.
According to their founders, theMVP is a regional organization of 32religious, labor and communityorganizations from across the valley, whichpurpose is to promote the welfare of theMerrimack Valley region through the jointefforts of organizations committed to thedignity and freedom of all men and women, without regard to religious creed, nationalorigin, social station, race or color.
Some of the accomplishments ofthe MVP have been securing passage ofthe Massachusetts Fair Transportation Actfor temporary workers and acquiring statefunds to establish a program to assist low-income families to buy affordable homes inthe suburbs of Lowell. Lately, MVP has beeninvolved in a campaign to improve jobs forhundreds of immigrant temporary workersemployed by Gillette and its suppliers.
MVP launched a high-profilecampaign targeting Gillette last March, andhas broken ground in meetings it has beenholding with senior management since earlyJune. “We have made progress in ourdiscussions with Gillette, and are advancinginitiatives that we are confident willultimately benefit hundreds of temporaryworkers in our community”, said AnniaLembert, President of the Merrimack ValleyProject.
Temporary workers working for apacking and distribution facility located at
the former Fort Devens Military Base, hadcomplained to MVP about not been paidfor the full hours they worked and for theover time beyond 40 hours.
Another complaint from the tempworkers was about being asked to come towork, but after arriving they were told therewasn’t enough work for them. They weresent home without pay, even when the lawrequires three hours pay in suchcircumstances. “When we complaint, wewere not hired back”, said some of theworkers.

Just 10days before her first appearance onBroadway, the three times Olivier award-winning actress underwent surgery forbreast cancer.
The news story centers on the timebetween the discovery of a lump on her leftbreast. Two hours later she was getting amammogram in a New York hospital andthree days after that, she underwent surgeryto remove a malignant tumor the size of amarble.
While the production company –headed by her sister, Sonia Friedman – wasconsidering postponing the show’sopening, Maria kept thinking that she had acommitment to fulfill and the livelihood ofmany people was depending on that show. Two days before the opening, Maria was inrehearsal with the rest of the cast. Her leftside of her breast bruised in pain, “It’s like alarge elephant sat on me,” she said.

“Many Lawrence residents mayargue that autumn is the best of ourfour seasons. The beautiful colors ofthe leaves inspire us to seek out thebest vantage points to view the dazzlingtapestry. And while we all agree thatleaves are beautiful on trees, once theyfall, they can become a hazard whenleft on walkways, driveways orporches,” said Postmaster Joseph J.Fanciullo.

Whether you are in a restaurant or ahospital, we have seen in recent years adecrease in the quality of customer service.Companies of all sizes have become awarethat having a dissatisfied customer returnis nearly impossible. The problem is thatwhen they leave, they don’t usually knowwhat trigger the decision not to come back.
The Merrimack Valley Chamber ofCommerce, through its Human ResourcesAssociation, held a seminar “Give ‘Em ThePickle! Lessons in Customer Service” a fun, motivating look at the most important thingwe can do in business – take care of thecustomer.
The breakfast, which was sponsoredby the Merrimack Valley Federal CreditUnion was held at the Wyndham Hotel inAndover.
Tracy Mermet, Human Resources’Training and Development Manager for theCredit Union presented a video “Give ‘EmThe Pickle” that, while being funny, drovehome the importance of customer servicewith every single customer coming incontact with a company. Making thecustomer priority number one and treatingthem as we would like to be treated is thebest way to assure that they will return.
Ms. Mermet explained that there arefour ingredients to achieve that: goodservice, good attitude, consistency andteam work. “People expect to get somethingand they should get it every time but if theservice comes with an pleasant attitude (asmile always helps), they will rememberwhere they can get it over and over again.”
That attitude must be part of thecompany training in order to instill teamwork. The 18-minute tape dealt with teamwork as something vital. Just imagine thatyou ask a server in a restaurant to get youan extra napkin only to say that they are notin charge of your table. Or, hence the title, when a customer asked for an extra pickleto go with the hamburger and the serversaid, “I’ll have to charge you extra.”
According to the video, a letter writtento the restaurant owner triggered the trainingamong his employees that the customer isalways right, which later led to the taping ofthis training program.
If a customer complains and it is later
fixed, their return rate is 70%; but if it isfixed at the moment it happens, there is a95% probability they will come back.
“Remember that team work are like the
spokes in a wheel,” said Ms. Mermet. “Onespoke may be bent, two may be out of shapebut, if too many of them are not performingas they should, the wheel will fall off.”

Notes fromyour Librarian
Maureen Nimmo
Director
Lawrence Public Library
Hi Rumbo readers. Well, theelections are over and things can settledown in Lawrence for a while. I wantedto congratulate all our new and returningofficials. To those who didn’t make itthis time, I would still like to expressgratitude for the time and effort you putinto your campaigns. The importantthing is to recognize that everyone whoran, ran to make the city a better placeaccording to his or her vision. I hopewe continue to see such commitment onbehalf of our community in years tocome.
Well, after some delays, the libraryis ready to move forward on our part ofthe city’s capital improvement plan. Ournew carpets will be installed over thenext two months with what we hope willbe minimum inconvenience to ourcustomers.
The auditorium is due to be startednext week and completed by the end ofthis month. The most difficult stage ofthe job will be the second floor and thecirculation area. We have that workscheduled for the weeks before and afterChristmas. The holidays and the schoolvacation make those two weeksrelatively quiet here. The library will beclosed for those weeks and we willreopen in the first week of January. Iwish I could find a way not to close atall but the reality is that for safety andpracticality we need the time to have thepeople working those areas to do sowithout any outside interference.
When the second floor is finishedwe will move on to the children’s roomand then the third floor, where we willput things in place for the opening ofour new history room and Robert FrostConference Room. While theseimprovements are being made I’m afraidsome inconvenience to customers isinevitable. I am sure, however, that thesmall inconvenience will be greatly
outweighed by our improved facility. The library will be something else in ourcity of which all of our citizens can beproud. The branch library will be openextended hours during the renovationand our staff will do its best to maintainservices from that location. I will makesure Rumbo readers are kept abreast ofthings as they progress.
In other important news, the libraryis very happy to have received a grantfrom Target Stores for early childhoodreading. We will be running a programcalled Tell me a Cuento which willencourage families to read together fromvery early childhood on. The readinghabit must be instilled in the very youngand we are happy to have theopportunity to present a program thatboth encourages early learning andfamily togetherness. It is veryimpressive to me when I see positivecorporate citizenship at work. Ourcommunity patronizes Target Stores andthey, in turn, are willing to give back tous. That is a situation where we all win.
I mentioned a few weeks back thatwe are trying to revive our Friendsgroup. The Methuen library has beenhelpful to us on that issue. We will bemeeting with folks from the MethuenFriends on November 30th for a strategysession. If you are interested in beingpart of this group, please contact me atthe library and we will get you involved.Meanwhile I’ll let you all know howthings progress.
Have a Happy Thanksgivingeveryone and see you at the library.

As part of the “Lights on Afterschool”celebration which highlighted theimportance of afterschool programs in thelives of children, Don Hathaway of JC Penneyin Salem, New Hampshire, presented theYMCA with a $5000 donation which supportsthe Y’s afterschool program in Methuen.
Earlier this month, the Methuen Branchof the Merrimack Valley YMCA opened itsdoors to celebrate “Lights On Afterschool!”a national initiative emphasizing theimportance of keeping afterschool programslights on and doors open. The eventshowcased children’s artwork, originalpoetry, home baked snacks andrefreshments, as well as indoor and outdoorsporting events.
This event celebrated around the nationmarked the sixth annual Lights OnAfterschool!, a project of the AfterschoolAlliance. Last year this national event wassupported by 2,600 YMCAs across theUnited States. “Lights On Afterschool! celebrates the
wonderful work being done in ourafterschool programs,” said ElizabethCovino, Merrimack Valley YMCA Directorof Marketing/Public Relations. “It remindsus of the great services afterschoolprograms provide - keeping our childrensafe, helping them learn, and relievingworking parents of worries about theirchildren’s afternoons. Unfortunately, toomany of our kids are still home alone in theafternoons, or out on the streets where theycan become involved in non-productiveactivities. And to make matters worse, funding shortages are forcing a number ofprograms to cut back or close their doorsjust when we need them most. The simpletruth is that afterschool programs are keyto our children’s success.”
Lights On Afterschool! is a nationwideevent to recognize the critical importanceof quality afterschool programs in the livesof children, their families and theircommunities, sponsored by TheAfterschool Alliance, a nonprofit publicawareness and advocacy organizationworking to ensure that all children and youthhave access to afterschool programs by theyear 2010.

By all accounts, Greater LawrenceTechnical School’s recent Open House wasa resounding success.
Nearly 1,000 visitors toured the schoolto view its state-of-the-art facilities onOctober 30 and learn about its career-areabased educational opportunities, accordingto Marilyn Fitzgerald, who coordinated thetwo-hour event. Greater Lawrence acceptsapproximately 400 freshman students eachyear from middle schools in Andover,Lawrence, Methuen, and North Andover.
Greater Lawrence Superintendent-Director Frank S. Vacirca was thrilled at theevent’s success.
“The turnout was overwhelming,” hesaid. “Every career area had visitors, and allthe applications on the reception table weretaken.”
“It’s our day to shine, and we did,” Ms.Fitzgerald said of the school’s largestcommunity awareness and recruiting eventof the year. “I think guidance was walking
on air at the end of the day, because theywere so happy people were able to see whatwe’re all about. There was never a time whenthe front and back parking lots weren’t full.”
The Open House featured hands-onactivities in all 17 of the school’s careerareas, and also showcased student work, curriculum materials, and after-schoolactivities and sports. Students in Autobodyperformed repairs under the watchful eyeof instructors and visitors, Allied Healthstudents offered blood pressure screeningand demonstrated CPR, and gourmet foodsand pastries were available for sampling inthe Edward V. Coakley Four WindsRestaurant.
“The hit of the day was Culinary Arts,”Ms. Fitzgerald said. “There was a waitingline to get in and see the restaurant.
“There wasn’t a part of the buildingthat wasn’t open,” she said. “We openedclassrooms, the pool, and the Frank S.Vacirca Performing Arts Center. One parent
The holidays are a special time ofyear and many families have traditionalfavorite recipes that appear on their tableeach year. Moderation is the key togetting through these special occasionswithout overindulging or missing out onthe familiar goodies. Festivities don’thave to be eliminated or avoided. Youcan have a fabulous time whilemaintaining your weight and withoutgiving up your favorite things!
“Thanksgiving doesn’t have to leaveyou feeling like a stuffed turkey,” saysLeslie Fink, M.S., R.D., a nutritionist withWeightWatchers.com, “and it doesn’thave to derail your weight-loss efforts, either. If, despite your efforts, you endup feeling like you went off track withyour weight-management efforts, keep itin perspective and move on. Tomorrow’sanother day.”
Overall, Leslie suggests broadeningyour focus so that the holiday is not justabout the food. “Concentrate on whatyou’re thankful for, like your commitmentto good health, wearing a smaller dresssize, or feeling more confident aboutyourself.”A bounty of tips to avoid the pilgrimageto plus-size1. Satisfy, don’t stuff. When sittingdown to the Thanksgiving feast, selectfoods you don’t normally eat so that youcan easily eliminate several of the dishes.Do you really want sweet potatoes toppedwith melted marshmallows and mashedpotatoes? Take small portions, eat slowlyand savor every bite. Don’t fill your bellyto the point of pain. Remember, it takesabout 20 minutes for your brain to realizeyour stomach is full.2. Plan to indulge. Don’t set yourselfup for failure by depriving yourself of thespecial foods that are prepared and
served only on Thanksgiving. Is it AuntMartha’s candied yams? Mom’s applepie? Or your sister-in-law’s pumpkincheesecake? Savor the special dishesinstead of mindlessly popping cheddarcheese cubes into your mouth before themeal. Decide how much of that favoritefood will satisfy you. If you cannotconceive of eating just a small piece ofMom’s pie, cut something else out toaccount for the larger slice.3. Don’t starve yourself beforehand. You’ll be more likely to gobble upeverything in sight. As always, eat a goodbreakfast and consider a snack beforeheading to the Thanksgiving celebration.4. Be creative. Practice how to say “no”in case you get pressured by well-meaning relatives to eat more than youwant. Try something like, “Thanks, butI’ll have to pass on that pumpkin piebecause I’m filled up with yourscrumptious turkey. Maybe I’ll take apiece home for later?” Follow throughon your resolve and toss it in the garbagewhen you get home.5. Travel light. Even if you’re going tosomeone else’s home for the holiday, youstill have control over what, and howmuch, you eat. Plan ahead and bring ahealthy dish with you. Your host, and yourwaistline, will thank you for it.6. Bag it. If you’re hosting the meal, remember that there is always tomorrow -and leftovers. But if you won’t be able tosleep knowing that there’s half a pie inthe kitchen, freeze leftovers immediatelyor give your guests doggie bags to takehome.7. Get moving. There are more ways tospend time with family on Thanksgivingthan just sitting around eating. Why notgo for a walk after supper, or get a gameof touch football going in the afternoon?

Student volunteers from SkillsUSA,DECA, the National Honor Society, and theStudent Council acted as tour guides, andmany visitors asked for tours. “The studentswere great at answering questions, “ Ms.Fitzgerald concluded.
