Despedida a Villamán

El Padre Jorge Reyes da lacomunión a Doña Noemí,viuda de Villamán.

Cuando recibí la terrible noticia deque Villamán había fallecido mi corazónse llenó de una gran tristeza. Recordétantos momentos bellos y tristes que paséjunto a mi amigo Villa.

Recordé como él entraba todos losdomingos de mano de su pequeña hija conla cual tenía adoración. También recordécuando trató de rehacer mi matrimonioen el momento en que todo se derrumbópara mí. Cómo me gustaría poderdevolverlo a la vida como el tratóconmigo cuando mi vida casi se perdió.

Noemí, en la distancia pero estoycerca de ti y tus hijos en mispensamientos y en mis oraciones.¡Cuánto deseé haber estado en Lawrencejunto a los míos! Cómo me duele cuandopasan cosas tan tristes como la pérdidade un amigo como Villamán y yo no estoyjunto a ustedes.

No tengo palabras para expresarlesmi tristeza por esta pérdida de un ser

humano lleno de alegría y tan útil a lasociedad. Pero Dios solo se sirve de losbuenos porque los malos tenemos queseguir en este infierno llamado tierra enel que todos queremos vivir.

De nuevo como siempre les reitero atodos, Lawrence tiene sus problemas yquizás siempre estamos en guerra pormotivos políticos pero no hay otro pueblocomo Lawrence, porque en Lawrencepeleamos, nos criticamos pero todossomos un solo pueblo en momentos comoeste.

El Centro de Deportes deNorthern Essex CommunityCollege fue el recinto dondecelebraron la ceremoniahonrando a un grupo deestudiantes que lograrongraduarse con honoresmientras que perseguían untítulo de Asociado oparticipaban en un Programade Certificado.

Los estudiantes fueronreconocidos por suexcelencia en asuntosacadémicos si tenían unpromedio de 3.5 o más; sirealizaron algo especial oúnico; y también por susactividades co-curricularespara los estudiantes quehicieron una contribuciónextraordinaria a la vidacolegial.

Los graduados seunieron a sus familiasdespués de la ceremonia enuna recepción para loshonrados, la facultad einvitados.

Cuarenta y tres añosatrás, Northern EssexCommunity College abrió suspuertas a 186 estudiantes, lamayoría de ellos erangraduados recientes de laescuela secundaria de Haverhill ocomunidades adyacentes. El campus delcolegio era The Greenleaf School, unaantigua escuela elemental, y generalmentelos estudiantes buscaban un título en artesliberales con planes de hacer unatransferencia a una institución de cuatroaños después de graduarse de NorthernEssex.

Hoy, Northern Essex es una de lasuniversidades comunitarias más grandes enMassachusetts, matriculando a casi 11,000estudiantes cada semestre. El estudiantepromedio tiene 29 años de edad, y lesofrecen más de 70 títulos de asociados yprogramas por certificado así como cientosde cursos sin créditos diseñados paraobtener enriquecimiento personal ycrecimiento profesional. El 30 de marzo anuncié formalmenteel inicio de mi campaña para alcanzar laposición de alcalde de Lawrence. En esaocasión describí una plataforma de tresaspectos fundamentales para impulsar anuestra ciudad hacia adelante - realzandoel desarrollo económico y aumento defuentes de trabajo, mejorando nuestrosistema escolar para nuestros niños ymejorando la calidad de vida para todoslos lawrencianos. Yo estoy aspirando ala alcaldía no solo porque tengo unavisión y un plan para echar nuestra ciudadadelante. Yo también puedo proveer loselementos que lamentablemente hanestado haciendo falta en el City Hall: unliderazgo dedicado a beneficiar a nuestracomunidad. En los últimos tres añostodas estas áreas llamadas a impulsarnuestro desarrollo, han sufrido por la faltade liderazgo de nuestro actual alcalde.Mientras nos acercamos a la temporadade elecciones, el alcalde ha decididocontinuar con su tema de “no liderazgo”como se ha demostrado destacadamentepor su ausencia durante los intentosrecientes de algunos políticos del patiopara inflamar tensiones raciales.

Durante estos años, muchos denosotros en la comunidad, tanto latinoscomo anglos, hemos trabajadofuertemente por unir todas las razas ycredos para mover nuestra ciudadadelante. Yo he pasado mi vida enLawrence como un foco de unión. Yotrabajo cada día como educador,negociante, padre y líder comunitario paraunir y llevar nuestra ciudad hacia elprogreso. Yo tengo un sueño de UnaCiudad, Una visión... con todos nosotrostrabajando juntos para hacerlo realidad.Yo no veo norte ni sur, sino un Lawrence.No una ciudad dividida por un río, sinouna comunidad unida por puentes, enlacesde familia, amistad e interés común. Yono veo ni anglo ni latino sino unacomunidad fuerte por nuestra propiavoluntad y esperanza.

Yo siempre he acariciado la idea deque debemos ser una comunidadtrabajando por un sueño, el sueño deproveer a nuestros niños una educaciónde calidad que los prepare para un futuroprometedor, el sueño de ayudar a cadauno de nuestros ciudadanos a obtener untrabajo que utilice sus habilidades; elsueño de una economía robusta que nospermita utilizar esos edificiosdesocupados con comercio productivo ysostenible; el sueño de calles seguras ylimpias. Estas son las cosas que yo quieroayudar a proveer para mi ciudad, y estosson los mismos temas que loslawrencianos presentan en las reunionesa las cuales acudo cada semana.

Hay algunos políticos en lacomunidad que tienen otras ideas. Enlugar de esperanza y éxito, ellos rieganveneno. Un veneno de odio y divisióndiseñado para atrasarnos. Ellospreferirían dañar el fruto de todo nuestroesfuerzo. Ellos preferirían poner a losanglos en contra de los latinos. Ellos noentienden que nosotros necesitamostrabajar unidos si deseamos triunfar. Eltema de la raza es la estrategia más fácily emocional que ellos usan para ensuciar

todo lo bueno que hemos construido.Esto nunca fue más evidente que

durante la controversia surgida alrededordel intento del alcalde para destituir aRoger Twomey como miembro y directorde la Junta de Licencias. Cuandonecesitábamos liderazgo de la oficina delalcalde durante este episodio lleno detensión, recibimos silencio. El alcaldesimplemente tiró la bola en la cancha. Yosiempre he pensado que el alcalde es unhombre decente que se preocupa por laciudad. Pero durante este episodio yoestuve preocupado por su falta de firmezaen la acción, luciendo como un entemanejable.

Durante la revisión de este asunto enel Concejo Municipal, algunos líderespolíticos en nuestra ciudad eligieronutilizar esta situación como oportunidadpara propagar tensiones raciales. Ellosacusaron de racista a Mr. Twomey, a susvecinos en Mount Vernon y hasta a mí.Afortunadamente, los esfuerzos de estosllamados “líderes”, fracasaron porquenuestra comunidad es más racional de loque ellos la catalogan; nosotros vimosesos ataques como lo que son, sinembargo, los ataques continúan. Aún así,mientras todo esto sucedía, el alcaldeofreció un simple silencio comorespuesta. El no tuvo iniciativa paraactuar.

En nuestra reunión del ConcejoMunicipal, yo denunciéresponsablemente estos ataques raciales,para disgusto de los promotores. Yo heinvertido todo mi tiempo como lídercomunitario trabajando para unir a losmiembros de nuestra ciudad para asílograr superarnos y echar hacia adelante.Cuando vea algo incorrecto yo siemprehablaré y actuaré para corregirlo. Yo novoy a permitir que trucos de políticoscrueles destrocen el trabajo duro quemiles de conciudadanos en esta ciudadhemos realizado día a día para realizar elsueño de Una Ciudad y Una visión.Nosotros no podemos dejarnos dividir porel argumento venenoso del racismo. ¡NO!Aquí no hay terreno para esas personassembrar su veneno racista ni para aquellosque aparentemente aprueban esto con susilencio. Yo no veo anglo ni latino sinouna comunidad trabajando unida paraalcanzar la meta del éxito.

Mientras esta temporada deelecciones avanza, nosotros necesitamosdialogar acerca de nuestras escuelas,trabajos y desarrollo económico, nuestrascalles y nuestros parques. Nuestra ciudadse merece un liderazgo políticotrabajando para todos los lawrencianos.Nuestros buenos ciudadanos reconocenestos trucos y los rechazan porque ya“conocen al cojo sentado y al tuertodurmiendo”, Yo no permitiré que los queodian nos obstaculicen, ni a los anglos nia los latinos de llevar a cabo nuestrapromesa de una ciudad unida por eltrabajo y el amor para un mejor futuro denuestros niños. Ustedes merecen eseliderazgo y yo se los ofrezco.

Padres:Hay que ser testigo, estar ahí para no

pasar por alto grandes acontecimientos enla vida de nuestros hijos. Venimos a estepaís sin el conocimiento de que los padresson la ficha más importante en el juego dela educación de sus hijos. ¿Cómo puede unpadre poner su hijo/a en la escuela y soloparticipar de las entrega del reporte escolardos veces al año?

Para que un padre se interese por laeducación de su hija/o no tiene que haberido a la Universidad. El deber de los padreses estar ahí para ser un sostén de sus hijos ydarles una mano en momentos preciso.Como padres debemos estar siempre ahípara dar el empuje necesario. Tenemos quecrear conexión con la escuela. Ver a losMaestros como verdaderos empresarios queadministran un negocio que es mío y que laúltima palabra está en mis manos.

Nosotros, la familia Macario-De LaCruz, hemos dedicado horas incalculablesal negocio que son nuestros hijos. Hemosestados ahí para dar soporte a la educaciónde nuestros hijos y a muchos de sus amigos.Hemos sido amigos de los maestros. Hemosestado ahí para cuando el maestro nos hadado recetas para mejoría de nuestros hijos.Hemos estados ahí para cuando lafrustración ha llegado. Hemos estado ahípara ser los primeros en aplaudir los logrosde nuestros hijos.

Como resultado nuestros hijos hanpodido pisar las espinas y escalar años de

arduo esfuerzos para alcanzar sus metas.Antes de que la escuela, o el maestro

New Paint 2005Todos los años, un grupo de artistas, pincel en mano, se distribuyen por la Ciudad de

Lawrence, para capturar lo mejor de sus imágenes. El pasado sábado 4, desde tempranas horasde la mañana, varios de ellos estaban pintando y cuando Rumbo los visitó ya estaban dando losúltimos toques a sus pinturas. Durante la noche, las mismas fueron subastadas en JacksonLumber para beneficio del Essex Art Center.

to capture its best images. Last Saturday, June 4th, painting since early in the morning, severalof them were giving the final touches to their paintings when Rumbo caught up with them.The paintings were later auctioned off at Jackson Lumber, to benefit the Essex Art Center.

The Sport & FitnessCenter of Northern EssexCommunity College wasthe site of a recentceremony honoring agroup of students whoachieved honors while inthe pursuit of an AssociateDegree or a CertificateProgram.

The students wererecognized for excellencein Academics if they hada grade point average of3.5 or above; if they hadsome special or uniqueaccomplishment; and alsofor their Co-curricularActivities for those students who have madeoutstanding contributions to college life.

Among the many students beinghonored, there were some paraprofessionalsfrom the Lawrence Public Schools andmembers of the Seeding for SuccessProgram, furthering their education. SheilaSacchetti, a working at the Parthum School,received an Associate Degree in Science -Elementary Education.

Stephanie DeSantis, a paraprofessionalat the Guilmette School received theexcellence award and Associate Degree inScience - Early Childhood Education.

Also, Debra Tilton a paraprofessionalin the Early Childhood Center at theHennessey School received the excellenceaward and Associate Degree in Science -Early Childhood Education.

The graduates werejoined by their families afterthe ceremony at a reception forhonorees, faculty and guests.

Forty-three years ago,Northern Essex CommunityCollege opened its doors to186 students, most of whomwere recent high schoolgraduates from Haverhill oradjacent communities. Thecollege’s campus was TheGreenleaf School, a formerelementary school, and thegreat majority of the studentswere majoring in the liberalarts with plans to transfer to afour-year institution aftergraduation from NorthernEssex.

NECC Awards Convocation

Today, Northern Essex is one of thelarger community colleges inMassachusetts, enrolling close to 11,000students each semester. The average studentis 29 years old, and the college offers over70 associate degree and certificate programsas well as hundreds of noncredit coursesdesigned for personal enrichment and careergrowth. Classes are scheduled day and nightat the Haverhill and Lawrence campuses,at extension sites in Andover, Methuen andNewburyport, on-site at local businesses andorganizations throughout the area, and evenover the Internet.

With thousands of graduates, NorthernEssex has been empowering the communityto dream learn and succeed for 43 years,enjoying a rich history and a strongacademic tradition.

On March 30th I officially announced mycampaign to be elected mayor. At that timeI spelled out a three-part platform formoving our city forward - enhancingeconomic development and jobs growth,fixing our schools system for our children,and improving the quality of life for allLawrencians. I am running for mayor notonly because I feel I have a vision and planto move our city forward. I also feel I canprovide the one thing that has been sorelymissing in City Hall - leadership committedto our community. For the last three yearsall of these areas have suffered because ofa lack of leadership by the current mayor. As we move into the election season, themayor has decided to continue with his “noleadership” theme as demonstratedprominently by his absence during therecent attempts by some politicians toinflame racial tensions.

Over the years many of us in thecommunity - Latino and Anglo alike - haveworked hard to bring people of all races,creeds, and beliefs together to move our cityforward. I have spent my life in Lawrenceas a healer. I work each and every day, asan educator, businessperson, father andcommunity leader, to unite and advance ourcity. I have a dream of One City, OneVision... with all of us working together tomake it happen. I see neither North norSouth, but one Lawrence. Not a city dividedby a river but a community united bybridges, bonds of family, friendship, andcommon interest. I see neither Anglo norLatino but One Community—strongertogether for our very diversity.I have always stressed that we must be onecommunity working for one dream - thedream of providing our children with anexcellent education that prepares them foran ever-changing economy; the dream ofhelping everyone of our citizens to obtain ajob that utilizes their skills; the dream of arobust economy that enables us to fill thosevacant buildings downtown with productive,sustainable commerce; the dream of safeand clean streets free of ugly, seeminglypermanent litter and crime of all types. These are the things I want to help providefor my city, and they are the very thingsmany Lawrencians talk about at themeetings I attend every week.There are those in the community, however,who have other ideas. Instead of hope andsuccess, they sow poison - a poison of hateand division designed to hold us back. Theywould rather rip apart the product of all ourhard work. They would rather pit Angloagainst Latino like it matters who is thebetter. They just do not understand that we

need to work together if we are to succeed. The race card is the easiest and mostemotional ploy they can use to dirty all thegood we have built.This was never more evident than duringthe controversy surrounding the mayor’sattempt to remove Roger Twomey as amember and chairman of the LicensingBoard. When we needed leadership fromthe mayor’s office during this stressfulepisode we received silence. The mayorfrankly dropped the ball. I have alwaysthought of the mayor as a decent man whocares for our city. But during this episode Iwas troubled by his lack of response.During the Council’s review of this matter,some political leaders in our city chose touse this time as an opportunity to inflameracial tensions. They labeled as racists Mr.Twomey, his neighbors in Mount Vernon,and even me. Fortunately, the efforts ofthese so-called leaders failed ultimatelybecause our community is more enlightenedthan they give it credit for; we saw theseattacks for the cheap, petty political stuntthat they were. Still, the attacks continue. However, while all this was going on themayor offered his mere silence in response. He could not be bothered to act.At our Council meeting I aggressivelydenounced these racial attacks, to thechagrin of the perpetrators. I have spent myentire time as a community leader workingto unite our city in order to advanceourselves forward. When I see a wrong Iwill always speak out and act to rectify it. Iwas not going to allow the crass politicalantics of others rip apart the hard work thatthousands of us in this city contribute eachday to building one city and one vision. Wecannot afford to be divided along raciallines. There is no place here for thesepeople to peddle their racist poison, and forthose to seemingly assent to it through theirsilence. I see neither Anglo nor Latino, buta community working together to make oursuccess happen.As this election season progresses, we needto talk about our schools, jobs and economicdevelopment, our streets, and our parks. Our city deserves political leadershipworking for all Lawrencians. Our goodcitizens see through these petty politicalstunts and reject themoutright. I will not allow the haters to keepus - Anglo and Latino alike - from fulfillingour promise as a city and our obligation toour children. You deserve that leadership.

District D Councilor Nicholas J.Kolofoles, held a fund raising event at theNaturalization Club, on Friday, June 3, 2005.

Speaking to over 100 friends andsupporters, Kolofoles told them he isrunning for re-election for the District DCouncil seat. Kolofoles is concerned abouthis role as a councilor, which is to look forthe neighborhood infrastructure and thequality of life in his district. “For the pastfour years, I have been the most strong voicefor the city,” he said.

Several city councilors showed up tohis event, among them, District A andCouncil President Patrick J. Blanchette;District B, Carlos D. Matos; District C,Barbara Gonzalez; District E, Gilbert K.Frechette; District F, Michael Fielding;Councilor at-Large Marcos A. Devers andformer District C Councilor, Nilka Alvarez-Rodriguez.

School Committee Members AmyMcGovern and James S. Vittorioso were inattendance, also Councilors at-Largehopefuls Angel Rafael Rivera and NunzioDiMarca.

“Nick’s strongest asset is his realconcern for the people,” said KeithWlodyka, old time resident and co-ownerof Tower Hill Variety. “He tries to answerevery call from his constituents; he seeseverybody as Lawrencians,” said Keith. “Onthe other hand, Nick’s weakest point is thathe tries to help everybody, stretchinghimself very thin. I believe he has earnedthe trust of the people”.

“We still have to do a lot of work andI’m going to launch a door to door campaignin District D. It is not how much you wantto do, but how much you have done,”finished Kolofoles.

This year, Kolofoles has two opponents,Pedro Nuñez and Frank Fernandez, who lostto Kolofoles by 47 votes during the pastelection.

With a $5,000 grant from the RBC DainRauscher Foundation, the Merrimack ValleyYMCA’s Lawrence Branch will be able tosustain its Junior and Teen AchieversProgram.

This youth development program istargeted to teens, age 11 to 13, and focuseson career development, academicachievement, leadership development, andsocial development. The program strives tohelp youth improve academic skills, toachieve higher levels of schoolperformance, to improve overall self-esteemand, ultimately, and to prepare for collegeand future careers. This program will focuson mentoring, tutoring, promoting collegeawareness among parents and children,guest speakers, SAT preparation workshops,computer training, assistance with collegeresearch, and college tours.

Hi everyone. Well, our Spanishclasses are finished. None of us are thatgreat yet but I think we all have thefoundation we need to make someprogress. I hope some of our Spanish-speaking patrons will try us out a bit andhelp us all move forward. This may takea bit of patience on your parts but we dohope to keep getting better. It was reallyan enjoyable experience for all of usinvolved and it also served to remind uswhat so many of our patrons are facing.

I lived for a number of years inLyons, France and I remember howisolating it was at first when I could notspeak the language fluently enough toreally be able to communicate withpeople around me. I also experiencedthis problem second hand when I cameback to America with my then husbandwho could not speak English. We alllearn what we need with time but I willnever forget these experiences and willalways keep in mind that learning a newlanguage is easier said than done. Mygood wishes are with all my community’simmigrant people and the challenges theyface. I’ve been there and I know whatits like.

Some fun news! The library is goingto be on television this summer.Univision is coming on Saturday to filma public service spot promoting thestatewide summer reading program.Look for our Solanyi Munoz to befeatured in the promotion as well as someof our best patrons.

Speaking of the summer reading

program, we have added a fun newelement. Phyllis Tyler, representing theFriends of the Lawrence Public Library,has agreed to have the Friends contributea dollar for every ten books the childrenread to save an elephant herd in Africa.This money will go to the AfricanWildlife Foundation.

I think this is a great idea and givesthe children something very worthwhileto support. We are having a sort of“African Safari” theme for the readingprogram so this fits right in. We are alsogoing to introduce some adultprogramming this year. On July 19th wewill feature pastel artist Greg Maichik ina session to teach the art of drawing withpastels. This program is free and allmaterial will be provided. Get in touchwith us if you want to be part of thisspecial evening as I think spaces will gofast. Big thanks, by the way to the EssexCommunity Foundation and theMassachusetts Cultural Council forfunding these prose programs.

One more point before I sign off.Once our renovations have beencompleted here, towards the end of thesummer, I want to concentrate my energyon expanding our Friends group. We willbe looking for a lot of community inputand involvement so be thinking about thisover the next month or two. I’m eager tohear your ideas. See you at the library.

The Fair started with the 2nd AnnualRadames (Chungo) Marrero Jr. softballtournament at the O’Neil field where for thesecond time, the Lawrence Police, the FireDepartment, City Hall officials andArlington residents got together to take partin this tournament to keep the memory ofthis great boy alive in this great communityof Lawrence. Is the mission of Weed & Seedto get residents, police, firefighters, cityofficials and other agencies to meet andinteract together and to create a betteratmosphere and relationship amongthemselves.

In the first of two games of thetournaments the Police Department wasdefeated by City Hall by a score of 10 to 3and the Residents defeated the FireDepartment 14 to 13. In a much excitedchampionship game played by City Officialsand the Residents, City Hall beat theResidents by a score of 17 to 10. It wasthought that the Residents we’re going tobe the winner of the game due to the factthat they’re ahead at the top of the sixthinning winning the game by 6 runs. But theMayor and his teammates came back in thebottom of the seventh inning and scored 7runs to take the championship 17 to 10.

At the Central Catholic High Schoolover 250 Residents from throughoutLawrence took part in the 4th AnnualLawrence Weed and Seed Coalition Healthand Safety Fair. The annual event isdesigned to allow residents of the area toaccess local health and safety providers inthe community.

Many families were able to receivedental screenings through CommunityDentists and a free eye examination fromCommunity Optical of Essex St. inLawrence. In addition, members of theLawrence Police Academy Alumniprocessed Child Identification kits for areachildren and members of the LMCC staffand Lawrence Community Policing

La 27 regata anual de canoas Lou Marcel, se llevó a cabo el sábado, 4 dejunio, 2005, en el Río Merrimack y se extendió por cerca de 7 millas río abajo, desdeel comienzo de la regata, detrás del Essex County Correctional Center, más conocidocomo “La Granja”, en Lawrence, hasta la línea final en el Crescent Yacth Club, enBradford.

The 27th Annual Lou Marcel Memorial Canoe Race was held on theMerrimack River, on Saturday, June 4th, 2005 and ran approximately 7 milesdownstream from the start of the race at the Essex County Correctional Center, betterknown as The Farm, in Lawrence, to the finish line at the Crescent Yacht Club inBradford.

The purpose of the race is to raise funds for the Special Olympics of theNortheast Section. This year, the race theme was “Margaritaville”, with more than150 canoes participating. Participants were entertained at the Crescent Yacht Club bythe popular band, Big Time!

Last year, over $26,500 was raised. This year, organizers hope to continuethese amazing achievements in fundraising. The proceeds of the event go to supportthe mission of year-round local and state-wide sports training and competition forindividuals with mental retardation and closely related developmental disabilities inthe Essex County area.

Locally, over 450 athletes train and compete in the Essex County area in 26different team and individual sports. In the Northeast Section, approximately 1,657athletes participate in the program every year.
