At Lawrence High School we are busy preparing for the start of the new school year and the final stages of our redesign efforts. As the new school year approaches, I wanted to highlight a few noteworthy changes that will set the stage for a more unified campus structure, common instructional vision, and more opportunities for student choices. These steps will aid us in achieving our LHS mission statement: Creating a community of learners fully committed to developing their skills and talents for college and career readiness in the 21st Century. The staff of Lawrence High School is dedicated to that mission, and in our drive to achieve it we have made significant changes to our academy structure in recent years. The 2017-2018 school year will begin the final stage of this work. Specifically, we will begin the school year with a 9 th grade Academy, a 10 th grade Academy, an Upper School Academy for 11thand 12thgraders, and the Abbott Lawrence Academy with students in grades 9-11. Our successful ENLACE and LIFE programs will continue to reside on the main campus while the International Academy and RISE will move to new locations. It is important to note that all of these programs -- whether they are located on North Parish Road or elsewhere in the city -- will continue to be vital parts of the Lawrence High School Community. The decision to create one academy for the 11thand 12thgraders was based on feedback from families, students, staff and community members, and their collective emphasis on the need for all our students to have options in their course selections. This model will allow students to choose elective classes from any of our industry-based pathways. Business, Finance, and Entrepreneurship Health and Wellness Performing Arts Public Administration Tools and Tech In addition to the career and college pathways there will be opportunities for upper classmen to participate in early college and dual enrollment programs at Northern Essex Community College and Merrimack College. We are expanding our internship program to afford students opportunities to apply what they leam in the classroom through real world experiences with our many industry and community partners. The school day for students will remain the same in 2017-2018, starting at 8am and ending at 2:45pm. The alignment of the bell schedule from grades 9-12 will allow us to extend opportunities for students in grades 9 and 10 to learn about the pathways and participate in college- and career-based activities. LHS will continue to maintain a uniform policy. We have included the uniform shirt colors and uniform expectations in this mailing for your review. Finally, we are extremely excited to announce a new way to involve you, the parents and guardians we know are critical to the success of our students and school. The first LHS Parent Advisory Council (PAC) will start in the fall, and we are asking for one representative from each of the academy PACs to join this committee in helping our staff and administration move Lawrence High School forward. Your input and support are invaluable and we look forward to having this structured opportunity to continue working together. Principals from the academies will be reaching out to families in the first month of school with details. Please consider participating. It is a busy summer preparing for the new school year, but we are excited to meet our new 9 th graders and continue our work with all LHS students. Until then, I hope you enjoy the rest of your summer. Michael Fiato, Headmaster Enclosures: SY 17-18 School Calendar, Uniform Standards
