If this Craftsman Lawn Mower fails due to manufacturer defects in material orworkmanship within two years from the date of purchase, return it to any Sears store,Parts & Repair Center or other Craftsman outlet for free repair (or replacement if repairproves impossible).

This warranty applies for only 90 days from the date of purchase if this Lawn Mower isever used for commercial or rental purposes.

This warranty does not cover:

. Expendable items that become worn during normal use, such as rotary mowerblades, blade adapters, belts, air cleaners and spark plug.

. Repairs necessary because of operator abuse or negligence, including bentcrackshafts and the failure to assemble, operate or maintain this Lawn Moweraccording to all supplied product instructions.

This warranty applies only while this product is used in the United States.

I. GENERAL OPERATION• Read, understand, and follow all

instructions on the machine and in themanual(s) before starting. Be thoroughlyfamiliar with the controls and the properuse of the machine before starting.

• Do not put hands or feet near or underrotating parts. Keep clear of the dis-charge opening at all times.

• Only allow responsible individuals, whoare familiar with the instructions, to oper-ate the machine.

• Clear the area of objects such as rocks,toys, wire, bones, sticks, etc., whichcould be picked up and thrown by blade.

• Be sure the area is clear of other peoplebefore mowing. Stop machine if anyoneenters the area.

• Do not operate the mower when bare-foot or wearing open sandals. Alwayswear substantial foot wear.

• Do not pull mower backwards unlessabsolutely necessary. Always look downand behind before and while movingbackwards.

• Never direct discharged material towardanyone. Avoid discharging materialagainst a wall or obstruction. Materialmay richochet back toward the opera-tor. Stop the blade when crossing gravelsurfaces.

• Do not operate the mower withoutproper guards, plates, grass catcher orother safety protective devices in place.

• See manufacturer's instructions for

proper operation and installation ofaccessories. Only use accessories ap-proved by the manufacturer.

• Stop the blade(s) when crossing graveldrives, walks, or roads.

• Stop the engine (motor) whenever youleave the equipment, before cleaning themower or unclogging the chute.

• Shut the engine (motor) off and wait untilthe blade comes to complete stop beforeremoving grass catcher.

• Mow only in daylight or good artificiallight.

• Do not operate the machine while underthe influence of alcohol or drugs.

• Never operate machine in wet grass.Always be sure of your footing: keep afirm hold on the handle; walk, never run.

• Disengage the self-propelled mech-anism or drive clutch on mowers soequipped before starting the engine.

• If the equipment should start to vibrateabnormally, stop the engine (motor) andcheck immediately for the cause. Vibra-tion is generally a warning of trouble.

. Always wear safety goggles or safetyglasses with side shields when operatingmower.

Ii. SLOPE OPERATION

Slopes are a major factor related to slip &fa!l accidents which can result in severe in-jury. All slopes require extra caution. If youfeel uneasy on a slope, do not mow it.DO:

• Mow across the face of slopes: neverup and down. Exercise extreme cautionwhen changing direction on slopes.

• Remove obstacles such as rocks, treelimbs, etc.

• Watch for holes, ruts, or bumps. Tallgrass can hide obstacles.

DO NOT:

• Do not trim near drop-offs, ditches orembankments. The operator could losefooting or balance.

• Do not trim excessively steep slopes.• Do not mow on wet grass. Reduced foot-

ing could cause slipping.

Iii. CHILDREN

Tragic accidents can occur if the operatoris not alert to the presence of children.Children are often attracted to the machine

and the mowing activity. Never assumethat children will remain where you lastsaw them.• Keep children out of the trimming area

and under the watchful care of anotherresponsible adult.

• Be alert and turn machine off if childrenenter the area.

• Before and while walking backwards,look behind and down for small children.

• Never allow children to operate the ma-chine.

• Use extra care when approaching blindcorners, shrubs, trees, or other objectsthat may obscure vision.

IV. SAFE HANDLING OF GASOLINE

Use extreme care in handling gasoline.Gasoline is extremely flammable and thevapors are explosive.• Extinguish all cigarettes, cigars, pipes

and other sources of ignition.• Use only an approved container.• Never remove gas cap or add fuel with

the engine running. Allow engine to coolbefore refueling.

• Never refuel the machine indoors.• Never store the machine or fuel contain-

er where there is an open flame, sparkor pilot light such as a water heater or onother appliances.

• Never fill containers inside a vehicle, ona truck or trailer bed with a plastic liner.Always place containers on the groundaway from your vehicle before filling.

• Remove gas-powered equipment fromthe truck or trailer and refuel it on theground. If this is not possible, thenrefuel such equipment with a portablecontainer, rather than from a gasolinedispenser nozzle.

• Keep the nozzle in contact with the rimof the fuel tank or container opening atall times until fueling is complete. Donot use a nozzle lock-open device.

• If fuel is spilled on clothing, changeclothing immediately.

• Never overfill fuel tank. Replace gascap and tighten securely.

V. GENERAL SERVICE• Never run a machine inside a closed

area.Never make adjustments or repairs withthe engine (motor) running. Disconnectthe spark plug wire, and keep the wireaway from the plug to prevent accidentalstarting.

• Keep nuts and bolts, especially bladeattachment bolts, tight and keep equip-ment in good condition.

• Never tamper with safety devices. Checktheir proper operation regularly.

• Keep machine free of grass, leaves, orother debris build-up. Clean oil or fuelspillage. Allow machine to cool beforestoring.

• Stop and inspect the equipment if youstrike an object. Repair, if necessary,before restarting.

• Never attempt to make wheel heightadjustments while the engine is running.

• Grass catcher components are subjectto wear, damage, and deterioration,which could expose moving parts orallow objects to be thrown. Frequentlycheck components and replace withmanufacturer's recommended parts,when necessary.

• Mower blades are sharp and can cut.Wrap the blade(s) or wear gloves, anduse extra caution when servicing them.

• Do not change the engine governor set-ting or overspeed the engine.

• Maintain or replace safety and instruc-tion labels, as necessary.

AWARNING: This lawn mower is equipped with an internal combustion engine andshould not be used on or near any unimproved forest-covered, brush-covered orgrass-covered land unless the engine's exhaust system is equipped with a sparkarrester meeting applicable local or state laws (if any). If a spark arrester is used, itshould be maintained in effective working order by the operator.In the state of California the above is required by law (Section 4442 of the CaliforniaPublic Resources Code). Other states may have similar laws. Federal laws apply onfederal lands. A spark arrester for the muffler is available through your nearest SearsParts & Repair Center (See the REPAIR PARTS section of this manual).

Read these instructions and this manual in its entirety before you attempt to assemble oroperate your new lawn mower.IMPORTANT: This lawn mower is shipped WITHOUT OIL OR GASOLINE in engine.Your new lawn mower has been assembled at the factory with the exception of thoseparts left unassembled for shipping purposes. All parts such as nuts, washers, bolts, etc.,necessary to complete the assembly have been placed in the parts bag. To ensure safeand proper operation of your lawn mower, all parts and hardware you assemble must betightened securely. Use the correct tools as necessary to ensure proper tightness.

TO REMOVE MOWER FROM CARTON

1. Remove loose parts included withmower.

2. Cut down two end corners of cartonand lay end panel down flat.

3. Remove all packing materials exceptpadding between upper and lowerhandle and padding holding operatorpresence control bar to upper handle.

4. Roll lawn mower out of carton andcheck carton thorougly for additionalloose parts.

NOW TO SET UP YOUR MOWERTO UNFOLD HANDLE

IMPORTANT: Unfold handle carefully soas not to pinch or damage control cables.1. Raise lower handle section to operating

position and align hole in handle with oneof three height positioning holes.

2. Insert handle bolt through handle andbracket and secure with knob.

3. Repeat for opposite side of handle.4. Remove protective padding, raise up-

per handle section into place on lowerhandle and tighten both handle knobs.

5. Remove any packing material fromaround control bar.

Your lawn mower handle can be adjustedfor your mowing comfort. Refer to "AD-JUST HANDLE" in the Service and Adjust-ments section of this manual.

HOW TO USE YOUR LAWN MOWERTHROTTLE / ENGINE CONTROL

The engine is controlled by a throttle con-trol located on the side of the upper handle.CHOKE position is for starting a cold engine;FAST position is for starting a warm engine,normal cutting, trimming and better grassbagging; SLOW position is for light cutting,trimming and fuel economy, STOP positionis for stopping the engine.

BLADE CONTROL_I,CAUTION: When the blade control isengaged, the blade turns.. To start the blade, hold the operator

presence control bar down to the handleand push the blade/brake control leverforward until it latches. To stop theblade, release the operator presencecontrol bar. Do not pull the blade/brakelever rearward with the operator pres-ence control bar down against thehandle. Allow a cold engine to warmup in high idle position for one minutebefore engaging the blade.

NOTE: It is normal to hear the belt slip as theblade is engaged and comes up to speed.. Do not start the blade in uncut grass.

Move the mower out of uncut grassbefore starting the blade.

Ai_CAUTION: Federal regulations requirethis blade/brake control to minimize therisk of blade contact injury. Do not underany circumstances attempt to defeat thefunction of this control.

. Self-propelling is controlled by hold-ing the operator presence control bardown to the handle and pulling the drivecontrol lever rearward to the handle.The farther toward the handle the leveris pulled, the faster the unit will travel.

. Forward motion will stop when eitherthe operator presence control bar ordrive control lever are released. To stopforward motion without stopping blade,release the drive control lever only. Holdoperator presence control bar downagainst handle to continue mowingwithout self-propelling.

NOTE: If after releasing the drive controlthe mower will not roll backwards, pushthe mower forward slightly to disengagedrive wheels.. To keep drive control engaged when

turning corners, push down on thehandle to lift the front wheels off theground while turning lawn mower.

Over time, the drive control system maybecome "loose", resulting in decreasedspeed. There is a turnbuckle on the drivecontrol housing to increase tension on thedrive cable. Proceed as follows:1. Turn unit off and disconnect spark plug

wire from spark plug.2. Rotate turnbuckle on drive control to

increase drive speed.3. Operate mower to test drive speed.

Readjust as required.4. If condition fails to improve after theabove steps (forward speed remains thesame), your drive belt is worn and shouldbe replaced.

Lift the rear door of the lawn mowerand place the grass catcher frame sidehooks onto the door pivot pins.The grass catcher is secured to the lawnmower housing when the rear door islowered onto the grass catcher frame.

_CAUTION: Do not run your lawnmower without mulcher plug or approvedgrass catcher in place. Never attempt tooperate the lawn mower with the rear doorremoved or propped open.

BEFORE STARTING ENGINEADD OIL

Your lawnmower is shipped without oil inthe engine. For type and grade of oil touse, see "ENGINE" in the Maintenancesection of this manual.A CAUTION" DO NOT overfill engine withoil, or it will smoke heavily from the muffleron startup.1. Be sure lawnmower is level.2. Remove oil dipstick from oil fill spout.3. You receive a container of oil with the

unit. Slowly pour the entire containerdown the oil fill spout into the engine.

4. Insert and tighten dipstick.IMPORTANT:• Check oil level before each use. Add oil

if needed. Fill to full line on dipstick.

• Change the oil after every 25 hours ofoperation or each season. You mayneed to change the oil more oftenunder dusty, dirty conditions. See "TOCHANGE ENGINE OIL" in the Mainte-nance section of this manual.

ADD GASOLINE. Fill fuel tank to bottom of tank filler neck.

Do not overfill. Use fresh, clean, regularunleaded gasoline with a minimum of87 octane. Do not mix oil with gasoline.Purchase fuel in quantities that can beused within 30 days to assure fuel fresh-Bess.

• i, CAUTION: Wipe off any spilled oil orfuel. Do not store, spill or use gasolinenear an open flame.,_ CAUTION: Alcohol blended fuels

(called gasohol or using ethanol or metha-nol) can attract moisture which leads toseparation and formation of acids duringstorage. Acidic gas can damage the fuelsystem of an engine while in storage. Toavoid engine problems, the fuel systemshould be emptied before storage of 30days or longer. Empty the gas tank, startthe engine and let it run until the fuel linesand carburetor are empty. Use fresh fuelnext season. See Storage Instructions foradditional information. Never use engineor carburetor cleaner products in the fueltank or permanent damage may occur.

TO STOP ENGINETo stop engine, move throttle controllever to STOP position. Wait until bladeand all moving parts have stopped andturn fuel valve to OFF position if you donot intend to restart the engine soon.

TO START ENGINE

NOTE: Due to protective coatings on theengine, a small amount of smoke may bepresent during the initial use of the prod-uct and should be considered normal.1. Be sure fuel valve is in the ON position.2. To start a cold engine, move handle

mounted throttle/choke control lever toCHOKE position.

3. Pul! starter handle quickly. Do not allowstarter rope to snap back.

4. Slowly move throttle control lever toFAST position after engine starts.

• To start a warm engine, move throttlecontrol lever to FAST position, then fol-low steps above.

NOTE: Allow a cold engine to warm up forone minute before starting the blade. See"BLADE CONTROL" in this section of thismanual.

MOWING TIPS_i, CAUTION: Do not use de-thatcher

blade attachments on your mower. Suchattachments are hazardous, wil! damageyour mower and could void your warranty.• Under certain conditions, such as very

tall grass, it may be necessary to raisethe height of cut to reduce pushingeffort and to keep from overloading theengine and leaving clumps of grassclippings. It may also be necessary toreduce ground speed and/or run themower over the area a second time.

• For extremely heavy cutting, reduce thewidth of cut by overlapping previouslycut path and mow slowly.

• For better grass bagging and most cut-ting conditions, the engine speed shouldbe set in the FAST position.

• Pores in cloth grass catchers can be-come filled with dirt and dust with useand catchers wil! collect less grass. Toprevent this, regularly hose catcher off

with water and let dry before using.Keep top of engine around starter clearand clean of grass clippings and chaff.This will help engine air flow and extendengine life.

MULCHING MOWING TIPSIMPORTANT: For best performance,keep mower housing free of built-upgrass and trash. See "CLEANING" in theMaintenance section of this manual.

• The special mulching blade will recurthe grass clippings many times andreduce them in size so that as they fallonto the lawn they will disperse intothe grass and not be noticed. Also, themulched grass will biodegrade quicklyto provide nutrients for the lawn. Alwaysmulch with your highest engine (blade)speed as this will provide the best recut-ting action of the blades.

• Avoid cutting your lawn when it is wet.Wet grass tends to form clumps andinterferes with the mulching action. Thebest time to mow your lawn is the earlyafternoon. At this time the grass hasdried, yet the newly cut area will not beexposed to direct sunlight.

• For best results, adjust the lawn mowercutting height so that the lawn mowercuts off only the top one-third of thegrass blades. • Certain types of grass and grassconditions may require that an area bemulched a second time to completelyhide the clippings. When doing a sec-ond cut, mow across (perpendicular) tothe first cut path.

• Change your cutting pattern from weekto week. Mow north to south one weekthen change to east to west the nextweek. This will help prevent matting andgraining of the lawn.

DRIVE WHEELS

Check rear drive wheels each time youmow to be sure they move freely. Thewheels not turning freely means trash,grass cuttings, etc., may be inside thedrive wheel and dust cover area and mustbe cleaned out to free drive wheels.BLADE CARE

For best results, mower blade must be keptsharp. Replace a bent or damaged blade.A CAUTION: Use only a replacementblade approved by the manufacturer ofyour mower. clockwise.TO REPLACE BLADE1. Position the blade. Be sure trailing edge of

blade (opposite sharp edge) is up towardthe engine and install the blade bolts.

2. Use block of wood between blade andlawn mower housing and tighten theblade bolts, turning clockwise.

• The recommended tightening torque is36-44 ft. Ibs.

IMPORTANT: Blade bolts are heat treat-ed. If bolts need replacing, replace onlywith approved bolts shown in the RepairParts section of this manual.TO SHARPEN BLADENOTE: We do not recommend sharpeningthe blade - but if you do, be sure the blade isbalanced. To check blade balance, drive a nail intoa beam or wall. Leave about one inch ofthe straight nail exposed. Place centerhole of blade over the head of the nail.If blade is balanced, it should remain ina horizontal position. If either end of theblade moves downward, sharpen theheavy end until the blade is balanced.

GEAR CASE

. To keep your drive system workingproperly, the gear case and area aroundthe drive should be kept clean and freeof trash build-up. Clean under the drivecover twice a season.

• The gear case is filled with lubricant to theproper level at the factory. The only timethe lubricant needs attention is if service

has been performed on the gear case.• If lubricant is required, use only Texaco

Starplex Premium 1 Grease, Part No.750369. Do not substitute.

2. Remove oil fill cap/dipstick; lay asideon a clean surface.

3. Tip lawn mower on its side as shownand drain oil into a suitable container.Rock lawn mower back and forth to re-move any oil trapped inside of engine.

7. Continue adding small amounts ofoil and rechecking the dipstick until itreads ful!. DO NOT overfill, or enginewill smoke on startup.

8. Always be sure to retighten oil fill cap/dipstick before starting engine.

9. Reconnect spark plug wire to plug.AIR FILTER

Your engine will not run properly and maybe damaged by using a dirty air filter.Replace the air filter every 100 hours ofoperation or every season, whichever oc-curs first. Service air cleaner more oftenunder dusty conditions.

TO CLEAN AIR FILTER

1. Remove cover.2. Carefully remove cartridge.3. Clean by gently tapping on a flat sur-

face. If very dirty, replace cartridge.,I;I,CAUTION: Petroleum solvents, such askerosene, are not to be used to clean car-tridge. They may cause deterioration of thecartridge. Do not oil cartridge. Do not usepressurized air to clean or dry cartridge.4. Install cartridge, then replace cover.

• We do not recommend using a gardenhose to clean lawn mower unless theelectrical system, muffler, air filter andcarburetor are covered to keep waterout. Water in engine can result in short-ened engine life.

CLEAN UNDER DRIVE COVERClean under drive cover at least twice aseason. Scrape underside of cover withputty knife or similar tool to remove anybuild-up of trash or grass on underside ofdrive cover.

ENGINE

Donot attempt to increase engine speed or itmay result in personal injury. If you believethat the engine is running too fast or tooslow, take your lawn mower to a Sears orother qualified service center for repair andadjustment.CARBURETOR

Your carburetor is not adjustable. If yourengine does not operate properly due to sus-pected carburetor problems, take your lawnmower to a Sears or other qualified servicecenter for repair and/or adjustment.IMPORTANT: Nevertamperwith the enginegovernor, which is factory set for proper en-gine speed. Overspeeding the engine abovethe factory high speed setting can be danger-ous. If you think the engine-governed highspeed needs adjusting, contact a Sears orother qualified service center, which hasproper equipment and experience to makeany necessary adjustments.

3. Be sure that all nuts, bolts, screws,and pins are securely fastened. Inspectmoving parts for damage, breakageand wear. Replace if necessary.

4. Touch up all rusted or chipped paintsurfaces; sand lightly before painting.

You can fold your mower handle for storage.1. Loosen the two (2) handle knobs on

sides of the upper handle and allowhandle to fold down to the rear.

2. Remove the two (2) handle knobs andcarriage bolts on sides of the lowerhandle and pivot entire handle as-sembly forward and allow it to rest onmower.

3. Reinstall knobs and carriage bolts tolower handle or handle brackets forsafe keeping.

• When setting up your handle from thestorage position, the lower handle willrequire manually locking into the mow-ing position.

IMPORTANT: When folding the handle forstorage or transportation, be sure to foldthe handle as shown or you may damagethe control cables.

FUEL SYSTEM

iMPORTANT: It is important to prevent gumdeposits from forming in essential fuel systemparts such as carburetor, fuel filter, fuel hose,or tank during storage. Alcohol blended fuels(called gasohol or using ethanol or methanol)can attract moisture which leads to separa-tion and formation of acids during storage.Acidic gas can damage the fuel system ofan engine while in storage.. Empty the fuel tank by starting the en-

gine and letting it run until the fuel linesand carburetor are empty.

. Never use engine or carburetor cleanerproducts in the fuel tank or permanentdamage may occur.

. Use fresh fuel next season.NOTE: Fuel stabilizer is an acceptable al-ternative in minimizing the formation of fuelgum deposits during storage. Add stabilizerto gasoline in fuel tank or storage container.Always followthe mix ratio found on stabilizercontainer. Run engine at least 10 minutesafter adding stabilizer to allow the stabilizerto reach the carburetor. Do not empty the gastank and carburetor if using fuel stabilizer.

Drain oi! (with engine warm) and replacewith clean engine oil. (See "ENGINE" inthe Maintenance section of this manual).

• Cover your unit with a suitable protectivecover that does not retain moisture. Donot use plastic. Plastic cannot breathe,which allows condensation to form andwill cause your unit to rust.

IMPORTANT: Never cover mower whileengine and exhaust areas are still warm.A CAUTION: Never store the lawn mowerwith gasoline in the tank inside a buildingwhere fumes may reach an open flame orspark. Allow the engine to cool before stor-ing in any enclosure.

• Si el equipo empezara a vibrar de unamanera anormal, pare el motor y revise deinmediato para averiguar la causa. General-mente la vibraci6n suele indicar que existealguna aveda.

• Siempre use gafas de seguridad o anteojoscon protecci6n lateral cuando opere la sega-dora.

II. OPERAClON SOBRE LAS CUESTASLos accidentes ocurren con mas frecuencia enlas cuestas. Estos accidentes ocurren debido aresbaladas o caidas, las cuales pueden resultaren graves lesiones. Operar la recortadora encuestas requiere mayor concentraci6n. Si sesiente inseguro en una cuesta, no la recorte.HACER:• Puede recortar a traves de la superficie de

la cuesta, nunca hacia arriba y hacia abajo.Proceda con extrema precauci6n cuandocambie de direcci6n en las cuestas.

• Renueva todos los objetos extrafios, talescomo guijarros, ramas, etc.

• Debe prestar atenci6n a hoyos, baches oprotuberancias. Recuerde que la hierba altapuede esconder obstaculos.

NO HACER:• No recorte cerca de pendientes, zanjas o

terraplenes. El operador puede perder latracci6n en los pies o el equilibrio.

• No recorte cuestas demasiado inclinadas.• No recorte en hierba mojada. La reducci6n

en la tracci6n de la pisada puede causarresbalones.

III. NINOSSe pueden producir accidentes tragicos si eloperador no presta atenci6n a la presenciade los nifios. A menudo, los nifios se sientenatraidos por la maquina y por la actividad dela siega. Nunca suponga que los nifios van apermanecer en el mismo lugar donde los viopor _ltima vez.• Mantenga a los nifios alejados del area de

la siega y bajo el cuidado estricto de otrapersona adulta responsable.

• Este alerta y apague la maquina si hay nifiosque entran al area.

• Antes y cuando este retrocediendo, mirehacia atras y hacia abajo para verificar si haynifios pequefios.

• Nunca permita que los nifios operen la ma-quina.

• Tenga un cuidado extra cuando se acerquea esquinas donde no hay visibilidad, a losarbustos, arboles u otros objetos que puedeninterferir con su linea de visi6n.

IV. MANEJO SEGURO DE GASOLINAUsar mucha atencidn cuando se maneja gaso-lina. La gasolina es extremamente inflamable ylos vapores son explosivos.• Apagar todos los cigarrillos, cigarros, pipas y

otras fuentes de ignicidn.• Usar solo un contenedor apropiado.• Nunca quitar el tap6n de la gasolina o afiadir

carburante con el motor en marcha. Esperarque el motor se enfrie antes de repostar lagasolina.

• Nunca repostar la maquina al interior de unlocal.

• Nunca guardar la maquina o el contenedorde gasolina donde hay una llama abierta,chispa o luz piloto como una caldera u otrosdispositivos.

• Nunca Ilenar contenedores en un vehiculo,en un cami6n o caravana con un forro deplastico. Colocar siempre los contenedoresen el suelo lejos de su vehiculo antes deIlenar.

• Quitar equipos que funcionan con gasolinadel cami6n o caravana y repostar en el suelo.Si esto no es posible, repostar dicho equipocon un contenedor portatil, mas bien que conuna tobera de gasolina.

• Mantener la tobera en contacto con el bordodel depdsito de carburante o de la aperturadel contenedor siempre hasta terminar elabastecimiento. No usar un dispositivo decierre-apertura de la tobera.

• Si el carburante cae en la ropa que se Ileva,cambiarsela inmediatamente.

• Nunca Ilenar en exceso el depdsito decarburante. Colocar el tapdn de la gasolina yapretar de modo seguro.

V. SERVIClO• Nunca haga funcionar una maquina dentro

de un area cerrada.• Nunca haga ajustes o reparaciones mientras

el motor este en marcha. Desconecte elcable de la bujia, y mantengalo a ciertadistancia de esta para prevenir un arranqueaccidental.

* Mantenga las tuercas y los pernos, espe-cialmente los pernos del accesorio de lacuchilla, apretados y mantenga el equipo enbuenas condiciones.

* Nunca manipule de forma indebida losdispositivos de seguridad. Controle regular-mente su funcionamiento correcto.

* Mantenga la maquina libre de hierba, hojasu otras acumulaciones de desperdicio.Limpie los derrames de aceite o combustible.Permita que la maquina se enfrie antes dealmacenarla.

* Pare e inspeccione el equipo si le pega a unobjeto. Reparelo, si es necesario, antes dehacerlo arrancar.

* En ning0n caso hay que regular la altura delas ruedas mientras el motor esta en marcha.

* Los componentes del receptor de la hierbavan sujetos a desgaste, da_os y deterioro,que pueden exponer las partes en mov-imiento o permitir que objetos sean dispara-dos. Controlar frecuentemente y cuando seanecesario sustituir con partes aconsejadaspot el fabricante.

* Las cuchillas de la segadora estan afiladasy pueden cortar. Cubrir las hojas o Ilevarguantes, y utilizar precauciones especialescuando se efect0a mantenimiento sobre lasmismas.

* No cambie el ajuste del regulador del motorni exceda su velocidad.

* Mantener o sustituir las etiquetas deseguridad e instrucciones, cuando seanecesario.

Lea estas instrucciones y et manual comptetamente antes de tratar de montar u operar su segadora nueva.IMPORTANTE: Este cortacesped viene SIN ACEITE O GASOLINA en el motor.Su segadora nueva ha sido montada en la fabrica con la excepci6n de aquellas partes que sedejaron sin montar pot razones de envio. Todas las partes como las tuercas, las arandelas, los per-nos, etc., que son necesarias para completar el montaje han sido colocadas en la bolsa de partes.Para asegurarse que su segadora funcione en forma segura y adecuada, todas las partes y losarticulos de ferreteda que se monten tienen que set apretados seguramente. Use las herramientascorrectas, como sea necesario, para asegurar que se aprieten adecuadamente.

PARA REMOVER LA SEGADORA DELA CAJA DE CARTON1. Remueva las partes sueltas que se incluyen

con la segadora.2. Cortelasdosesquinasdelosextremosdelacaja

de cart6n y tienda el panel del extremo piano.3. Remueva todo el material de empaque, ex-

cepto la curia entre el mango superior y 61inferior, y la curia que sujeta la barra de loscontrol que exige la presencia del operadorjunto con el mango superior.

4. Haga rodar la segadora hacia afuera de lacaja de cart6n y revisela cuidadosamentepara verificar si todavia quedan partessueltas adicionales.

COMO PREPARAR SU SEGADORA

PARA DESDOBLAR EL MANGOIMPORTANTE: Despliegue el mango conmucho cuidado para no pellizcar o dafiar loscables de control.1. Levante la secci6n del mango inferior hasta

la posici6n de operaci6n y alinee el agujeroen este con uno de los tres agujeros paradeterminar la altura en el puntal del mango.

2. Inserte el perno del mango a traves de estey del puntal y aseg_lrelo con la manilla.

3. Repita el procedimiento para el ladoopuesto del mango.

4. Levante la secci6n del mango superiorhasta la posici6n de operaci6n, remueva lacuria protectora y apriete las manillas delmango en forma segura.

5. Remueva el material de empaque de alred-edor de la barra de control.

El mango de la segadora puede ajustarseseg0n le acomode para segar. Refierase a"AJUSTE DEL MANGO" en la Secci6n de Ser-vicio y Ajustes de este manual.

CONTROL DE LA CUCHILLA,_PRECAUCI6N: Cuando el mando de lacuchilla esta accionado, la cuchilla gira.• Para accionar la cuchilla, mantener la palanca

de control que exige la presencia del operadorabajo hacia el mango y presionar la palanca demando cuchilla/freno hacia adelante hasta quese enganche. Para detener la cuchilla, soltarla palanca de control que exige la presenciadel operador. No tirar de la palanca de la hoja/freno hacia atras cuando la palanca de mandode presencia operador esta bajada contra laempufiadura. Dejar que el motor frio se calienteen la posici6n en vacio por un minuto antes deaccionar la cuchilla.

NOTA: Es normal oir el deslizamiento de lacorrea mientras la cuchilla se acciona y alcanzasu velocidad prevista.

No accionar la cuchilla en presencia de hierbamuy alta por cortar. Llevar la segadora fuera dela hierba alta antes de accionar la cuchilla.

PARA DESCOhACCIONAR EXION DELA CUCHILLA LA CUCHILLA

CONTROL DE LA IMPULSION• La autopropulsidn se controla manteniendo

la palanca de mando operador presenteabajo hacia el mango y tirando la palanca deaccionamiento atras hacia el mango. Cuantomas lejos se tira la palanca hacia el mango,mas rapida ira la unidad.

• El movimiento hacia adelante se detiene cuan-do sea la palanca de mando operador presenteo la palanca de accionamiento se sueltan. Paradetener el movimiento hacia adelante sinapagar el cuchilla, soltar s61o la palanca deaccionamiento. Mantener la palanca de mandooperador presente abajo contra el mangopara continuar a cortar sin autopropulsidn.

AVlSO: Si despues haber desenganchado de lapalanca de control, la segadora no roda haciaatras, empuje la segadora un poco hacia adelantepara desenganchar las ruedas de la impulsi6n.• Para mantener el mando conectado cuando

se da la vuelta a una esquina, empujar elmango para levantar las ruedas delanterasdel terreno mientras se gira la cortadora.

AJUSTE DEL MANDOOcasionalmente, el sistema de mando puede"aflojarse", provocando una disminuci6n de lavelocidad. Hay un torniquete en la sede delmando para apretar la tensi6n del cable. Pro-ceder de la siguiente manera:1. Apagar la unidad y desconectar el cable de

bujia de la bujia.2. Vuelta el torniquete para aumentar la velo-

cidad del mecanismo.3. Opere la segadora para probar la velocidad

del mecanismo. Reajuste segOn Io requerido.4. Si las condiciones no mejoran despues de los

pasos descritos (la velocidad hacia adelantequeda la misma), la correa de transmisi6nesta desgastada y tiene que ser sustituida.

PARA MONTAR Y ADJUNTAR EL RECOGE=DOR DE CE_SPED1. Levante la puerta trasera del cortacesped

y colocar los ganchos del armazon de larecolectora de hierba en los pasadores delquicio de la puerta.

2. El recogedor de cesped queda aseguradoen la caja de la segadora cuando se baja lapuerta trasera para descansar en el basti=

de desarga de aceite.3. Usted recibe un envase de aceite con la

unidad. Vierta lentamente el envase enterode aceite en el tubo de relleno del motor.

4. Inserte y apriete la varilla medidora de aceite.IMPORTANTE:• Revise el nivel del aceite antes de cada uso.

Agregue aceite si es necesario. Llene hasta lalinea de Ileno en la varilla medidora de nivel.

• Cambie el aceite despues de 25 horas deoperaci6n o una vez por temporada. Puedenecesitar cambiar el aceite mas a menudocuando las condiciones son polvorosas o su-cias. Vea "PARA CAMBIAR EL ACEITE DELMOTOR" en la seccion de Mantenimiento deeste manual.

PARA HACER ARRANCAR EL MOTORAVISO: Debido alas capas protectoras del mo-tor, una cantidad pequefia de humo puede es-tar presente durante el uso inicial del productoy se debe considerar normal.1. Asegurase que valvula del combustible este

en la posici6n ON.2. Para hacer arrancar un motor frio, mueva

la palanca de control de aceleraci6n/estrangulaci6n, montada en elmango, a laposici6n de ESTRANGULACION.

3. Tire el mango del arrancador rapidamente.No permita que el cord6n arrancador sedevuelva abruptamente.

4. Lentamente mueva la palanca de controlde aceleraci6n a la posici6n de RA,PIDO,despues de que arranque el motor.

* Para empezar el motor, mueva la palanca decontrol de acceleraci6n a la posici6n de RA-PIDO y despues siga los pasos anteriores.

• Para un corte muy pesado, reduzca el anchodel corte pasando parcialmente pot encimadel lugar anteriormente cortado y sieguelentamente. *

• Para un mejor ensacado del cesped y para lamayoria de las condiciones de corte, la velo-cidad del motor debe ajustarse a la posici6nde RA,PIDO.

* Los poros en los recogedores de cesped detela pueden Ilenarse con mugre y polvo conel uso y los recogedores recaudaran menoscesped. Para evitar este, rocie el recogedorcon la manguera de agua regularmente ydejelo secarse antes de usarlo.

* Mantenga la parte superior del motor, alred-edor del arrancador, despejada y sin recortesde cesped y paja. Esto ayudara el flujo delaire del motor y extendera su duraci6n.

CONSEJOS PARA SEGAR Y ACOLCHARIMPORTANTE: Para obtener el mejor ren-dimiento mantenga la caja de la segadora sinacumulacion de cesped y basura. Vea "LIMP-IEZA" in la seccion Mantenimiento de estemanual., La cuchilla acolchadora especial va a volver a

cortar los recortes de cesped muchas veces, ylos reduce en tamafio, de modo que si se caenen el cesped se van a dispersar entre este y nose van a notar. Tambien, el cesped acolchadose va a deshacer rapidamente entregandosubstancias nutritivas para el cesped. Siempreacolche con la velocidad del motor (cuchilla)mas alta, pues asi se obtendra la mejor acci6nde recorte de las cuchillas.

, Evite cortar el cesped cuando este mojado.El cesped mojado tiende a format montonese interfiere con la acci6n de acolchado.La mejor hora para segar el cesped estemprano en la tarde. A esa hora este se hasecado y el area recien cortada no quedaraexpuesta al sol directo.

, Para obtener los mejores resultados, ajustela altura del corte de la segadora de modoque esta corte solamente el tercio superiorde las hojas de cesped. En el caso de que elcesped haya crecido demasiado, puede sernecesario el elevar la altura del corte parareducir el esfuerzo necesario para empujar lasegadora y para evitar sobrecargar el motor,dejando montones de recortes de cesped.Para un cesped muy pesado, reduzca el an-cho del corte pasando pot encima del lugaranteriormente cortado y siegue lentamente.

Ciertos tipos de cesped y sus condicionespueden exigir que un area tenga que seracolchada por segunda vez para escondercompletamente los recortes. Cuando se hagael segundo corte, siegue atravesado o (en for-ma perpendicular) a la pasada del primer corte.Cambie su patr6n de corte de semana asemana. Hay algunos ajustes que se tienen que haceren forma peri6dica para poder mantener suunidad adecuadamente.

3. Use un bloque de madera entre la cuchillay la caja de la segadora para evitar que lacuchilla gire cuando se le quite los pernos.

AVlSO: Proteja sus manos con guantes y/oenvuelva la cuchilla con una tela gruesa.4. Remueva los pernos de la cuchilla girandolo

en el sentido contrario en que giran lasmanillas del reloj.

PARA CAMBIAR LA CUCHILLA

1. Ponga la cuchilla. AsegQrese de que elborde de salida de la cuchilla (opuesto alborde afilado) este hacia arriba hacia el mo-tor y instale los pernos de la cuchilla.

2. Use un bloque de madera entre la cuchilla yla caja de la segadora y apriete los pernosde la cuchilla girandolo en el sentido en quegiran las manillas del reloj.

• La torsi6n para apretar recomendada es de36-44 pies libras.

IMPORTANTE: El perno de la cuchilla estratado a calo. Si es necesario sustituir lospernos, sustituirlos s61o con pernos aprobadosmostrados en la secci6n Partes de Reparaci6nde este manual.PARA AFILAR LA CUCHILLA

AVlSO: No recomendamos el afilar la cuchilla- pero si Io hace, asegQrese de que quede bal-anceada. Una cuchilla que no esta balanceadava a producir eventualmente dafio en la sega-dora o en el motor.• La cuchilla puede afilarse con una lima o en 30

CAJA DE ENGRANAJES• Para mantener el sistema de impulsi6n

funcionando en forma adecuada, la caja deengranajes y el area alrededor de la impulsi6ntienen que mantenerse limpias y sin acumu-laci6n de basura. Limpie debajo de la cubiertade la impulsi6n dos veces por temporada.

• La caja de engranajes se Ilena con lubricantehasta el nivel adecuado en la fabrica. LaQnica vez que el lubricante necesita atenci6nes cuando se le ha prestado servicio a lacaja de engranajes.

• Si se necesita lubricante, use solamenteGrasa Texaco Starplex Premium 1, Parte No.750369. No use substitutos.

MOTORLUBRICACIONUse solamente aceite de detergente de alta cali-dad clasificado con la clasificaci6n SG-SL de ser-vicio API. Seleccione la calidad de viscosidad SAEsegQn su temperatura de operaci6n esperada.

3. Incline la cortadora de cesped pot estecostado tal como se muestra y purgue elaceite en un recipiente id6neo. Mueva lasegadora de atras para adelante para re-mover todo el aceite que se haya quedadoatrapado dentro del motor.

7. ContinOe agregando cantidades pequeasde aceite y vuelva a inspeccionar la varillamedidora hasta que lea Ileno (FULL). NOsobrellene el motor con aceite, o fumaracuando Io valla a arrancar.

8. AsegQrese de apretar la varilla medidoradel aceite antes de arrancar el motor.

9. Vuelva a conectar el alambre de la bujia aesta.

FILTRO DE AIRESu motor puede sufrir averias y funcionar demanera incorrecta con un filtro del aire sucio.Sustituir el papel del cartucho una vez al a_o otras 100 horas de funcionamiento, mas a men-udo si se utiliza en condiciones de suciedad ypolvo particulares. No lave el filtro de aire.PARA LIMPIAR EL FILTRO DE AIRE1. Remueva la cubierta.2. Cuidadosamente, remueva el cartucho.3. Limpielo golpeandolo suavemente en una

• Mantenga las superficies pulidas y las rue-das sin gasolina, aceite, etc.

No recomendamos el uso de una manguerade jardin para limpiar la segadora a menosque el sistema electrico, el silenciador, elfiltro de aire y el carburador esten tapadospara evitar que les entre el agua. El agua enel motor puede acortar la duraci6n de este.

DESVlADOR TRASEROSe proporciona un desviador trasero, adjunto en-tre las ruedas traseras de su segadora, para re-ducir a un minimo la posibilidad que objetos seanlanzados hacia afuera de la parte trasera de lasegadora, en la posicidn en donde se encuentra eloperador. Si se da_a el desviador debe cambiarse.

LA CORREA DE IMPULSION

Si su segadora no esta funcionando en formaadecuada debido a problemas que se sospechavienen del correa de impulsi6n, Ileve su sega-dora a contacto con su centro de servicio Searso con un otto centro de servicio cualMcado pararepararla y/o ajustarla.

PARA AJUSTAR EL MANGOEl mango de su segadora cuenta con tres (3)posiciones de altura - ajQstelo a la altura que leacomode.1. Remueva la manilla y el perno portador en

un lado del mango inferior.2. AI mismo tiempo que sujeta el conjunto del

mango, remueva la manilla y el perno porta-dor del lado opuesto, alinee el agujero en elmango con el agujero deseado en el puntaldel mango y vuelva a montar el perno y lamanilla y aprietelos en forma segura.

3. Alinee el lado opuesto del mango con elagujero de la misma posici6n y asegQreloscon el perno y la manilla.

MOTOREl mantenimiento, la reparaci6n, o el reemplazode cualquier dispositivos o sistemas del controlde la emisi6n, los cuales sean hechos al costodel cliente, pueden set realizados por cualquierindividuo o establecimiento de reparaci6n demotor. Los reparos que caen bajo garantiadeben set realizados por un establecimiento deservicio de reparaci6n de motor autorizado.VELOCIDAD DEL MOTORLa velocidad del motor ha sido ajustada en la fa=brica. No trate de aumentar la velocidad del motorpues se pueden producir lesiones personales. Sicree que el motor esta funcionando demasiadorapido o demasiado lento, Ileve su segadora amas con su centro de servicio Sears o con unotto centro de servicio cualMcado.CARBURADORSu carburador no es ajustable. Si su motor noesta funcionando en forma adecuada debidoa problemas que se sospecha vienen del carbu-rador, Ileve su segadora a contacto con su cen-tro de servicio Sears o con un otro centro deservicio cualMcado para repararla y/o ajustarla.IMPORTANTE: Nunca manipule el reguladordel motor, el que ha sido ajustado en la fabricapara la velocidad del motor adecuada. Puedeser peligroso hacer funcionar el motor a unavelocidad por sobre el ajuste de alta velocidadde la fabrica. Si cree que la velocidad alta regu-lada del motor necesita ajuste, contacto con sucentro de servicio Sears o con un otro centrode servicio cualificado, el que cuenta con eleqwpo adecuado y la experiencia para hacerlos ajustes necesarios.

de Mantenimento de este manual.3. Aseg_rese de que todas las tuercas y

clavijas y todos los pernos y tornillos estenapretados en forma segura. Inspeccionelas partes que se mueven para verificar siestan dafiadas, quebradas o desgastadas.Cambielas si es necesario.

4. Retoque todas las superficies que estenoxidadas o con la pintura picada; use unalija antes de pintar.

MANGOPuede doblar el mango de su segadora para elalmacenamiento.1. Suelte las dos (2) manillas del mango en

cada lado del mango superior y permita queel mango se doble hacia detras.

2. Remueva las dos (2) manillas y los pernos decada lado del mango inferior y pivote el con-junto entero del mango hacia delante y per-mita le que se descanse sobre la segadora.

3. Vuelva a poner las manillas y los pernos almango inferior o a los puntales del mangopara la seguridad.

• Cuando prepare su mango a partir de laposici6n de almacenamiento, el mango infe-rior nesecitara cerrarlo manualmente para laposici6n de sega.

SISTEMA DE COMBUSTIBLEIMPORTANTE: Es importante evitar que se for-men depositos de coma en partes fundamentalesdel sistema de combustible tales como el carbu-rador, el filtro del combustible, la manguera delcombustible o en el estanque durante el almace-namiento. Los combustibles mezclados con alco-hol (conocido como gasohol o que tienen etanol ometanol) pueden atraer humedad, Io que conducea la separacion y a la formacion de acidos duranteel almacenamiento. I. GENERAL OPERATION• Read, understand, and follow all

instructions on the machine and in themanual(s) before starting. Be thoroughlyfamiliar with the controls and the properuse of the machine before starting.

• Do not put hands or feet near or underrotating parts. Keep clear of the dis-charge opening at all times.

• Only allow responsible individuals, whoare familiar with the instructions, to oper-ate the machine.

• Clear the area of objects such as rocks,toys, wire, bones, sticks, etc., whichcould be picked up and thrown by blade.

• Be sure the area is clear of other peoplebefore mowing. Stop machine if anyoneenters the area.

• Do not operate the mower when bare-foot or wearing open sandals. Alwayswear substantial foot wear.

• Do not pull mower backwards unlessabsolutely necessary. Always look downand behind before and while movingbackwards.

• Never direct discharged material towardanyone. Avoid discharging materialagainst a wall or obstruction. Materialmay richochet back toward the opera-tor. Stop the blade when crossing gravelsurfaces.

• Do not operate the mower withoutproper guards, plates, grass catcher orother safety protective devices in place.

• See manufacturer's instructions for

proper operation and installation ofaccessories. Only use accessories ap-proved by the manufacturer.

• Stop the blade(s) when crossing graveldrives, walks, or roads.

• Stop the engine (motor) whenever youleave the equipment, before cleaning themower or unclogging the chute.

• Shut the engine (motor) off and wait untilthe blade comes to complete stop beforeremoving grass catcher.

• Mow only in daylight or good artificiallight.

• Do not operate the machine while underthe influence of alcohol or drugs.

• Never operate machine in wet grass.Always be sure of your footing: keep afirm hold on the handle; walk, never run.

• Disengage the self-propelled mech-anism or drive clutch on mowers soequipped before starting the engine.

• If the equipment should start to vibrateabnormally, stop the engine (motor) andcheck immediately for the cause. Vibra-tion is generally a warning of trouble.

. Always wear safety goggles or safetyglasses with side shields when operatingmower.

Ii. SLOPE OPERATION

Slopes are a major factor related to slip &fa!l accidents which can result in severe in-jury. All slopes require extra caution. If youfeel uneasy on a slope, do not mow it.DO:

• Mow across the face of slopes: neverup and down. Exercise extreme cautionwhen changing direction on slopes.

• Remove obstacles such as rocks, treelimbs, etc.

• Watch for holes, ruts, or bumps. Tallgrass can hide obstacles.

DO NOT:

• Do not trim near drop-offs, ditches orembankments. The operator could losefooting or balance.

• Do not trim excessively steep slopes.• Do not mow on wet grass. Reduced foot-

ing could cause slipping.

Iii. CHILDREN

Tragic accidents can occur if the operatoris not alert to the presence of children.Children are often attracted to the machine

and the mowing activity. Never assumethat children will remain where you lastsaw them.• Keep children out of the trimming area

and under the watchful care of anotherresponsible adult.

• Be alert and turn machine off if childrenenter the area.

• Before and while walking backwards,look behind and down for small children.

• Never allow children to operate the ma-chine.

• Use extra care when approaching blindcorners, shrubs, trees, or other objectsthat may obscure vision.

IV. SAFE HANDLING OF GASOLINE

Use extreme care in handling gasoline.Gasoline is extremely flammable and thevapors are explosive.• Extinguish all cigarettes, cigars, pipes

and other sources of ignition.• Use only an approved container.• Never remove gas cap or add fuel with

the engine running. Allow engine to coolbefore refueling.

• Never refuel the machine indoors.• Never store the machine or fuel contain-

er where there is an open flame, sparkor pilot light such as a water heater or onother appliances.

• Never fill containers inside a vehicle, ona truck or trailer bed with a plastic liner.Always place containers on the groundaway from your vehicle before filling.

• Remove gas-powered equipment fromthe truck or trailer and refuel it on theground. If this is not possible, thenrefuel such equipment with a portablecontainer, rather than from a gasolinedispenser nozzle.

• Keep the nozzle in contact with the rimof the fuel tank or container opening atall times until fueling is complete. Donot use a nozzle lock-open device.

• If fuel is spilled on clothing, changeclothing immediately.

• Never overfill fuel tank. Replace gascap and tighten securely.

V. GENERAL SERVICE• Never run a machine inside a closed

area.Never make adjustments or repairs withthe engine (motor) running. Disconnectthe spark plug wire, and keep the wireaway from the plug to prevent accidentalstarting.

• Keep nuts and bolts, especially bladeattachment bolts, tight and keep equip-ment in good condition.

• Never tamper with safety devices. Checktheir proper operation regularly.

• Keep machine free of grass, leaves, orother debris build-up. Clean oil or fuelspillage. Allow machine to cool beforestoring.

• Stop and inspect the equipment if youstrike an object. Repair, if necessary,before restarting.

• Never attempt to make wheel heightadjustments while the engine is running.

• Grass catcher components are subjectto wear, damage, and deterioration,which could expose moving parts orallow objects to be thrown. Frequentlycheck components and replace withmanufacturer's recommended parts,when necessary.

• Mower blades are sharp and can cut.Wrap the blade(s) or wear gloves, anduse extra caution when servicing them.

• Do not change the engine governor set-ting or overspeed the engine.

• Maintain or replace safety and instruc-tion labels, as necessary.

AWARNING: This lawn mower is equipped with an internal combustion engine andshould not be used on or near any unimproved forest-covered, brush-covered orgrass-covered land unless the engine's exhaust system is equipped with a sparkarrester meeting applicable local or state laws (if any). Read these instructions and this manual in its entirety before you attempt to assemble oroperate your new lawn mower.IMPORTANT: This lawn mower is shipped WITHOUT OIL OR GASOLINE in engine.Your new lawn mower has been assembled at the factory with the exception of thoseparts left unassembled for shipping purposes. All parts such as nuts, washers, bolts, etc.,necessary to complete the assembly have been placed in the parts bag. To ensure safeand proper operation of your lawn mower, all parts and hardware you assemble must betightened securely. Use the correct tools as necessary to ensure proper tightness.

TO REMOVE MOWER FROM CARTON

1. Remove loose parts included withmower.

2. Cut down two end corners of cartonand lay end panel down flat.

3. Remove all packing materials exceptpadding between upper and lowerhandle and padding holding operatorpresence control bar to upper handle.

4. Roll lawn mower out of carton andcheck carton thorougly for additionalloose parts.

NOW TO SET UP YOUR MOWERTO UNFOLD HANDLE

IMPORTANT: Unfold handle carefully soas not to pinch or damage control cables.1. Raise lower handle section to operating

position and align hole in handle with oneof three height positioning holes.

2. Insert handle bolt through handle andbracket and secure with knob.

3. Repeat for opposite side of handle.4. Remove protective padding, raise up-

per handle section into place on lowerhandle and tighten both handle knobs.

5. Remove any packing material fromaround control bar.

BLADE CONTROL_I,CAUTION: When the blade control isengaged, the blade turns.. To start the blade, hold the operator

presence control bar down to the handleand push the blade/brake control leverforward until it latches. To stop theblade, release the operator presencecontrol bar. Do not pull the blade/brakelever rearward with the operator pres-ence control bar down against thehandle. Allow a cold engine to warmup in high idle position for one minutebefore engaging the blade.

NOTE: It is normal to hear the belt slip as theblade is engaged and comes up to speed.. Do not start the blade in uncut grass.

Over time, the drive control system maybecome "loose", resulting in decreasedspeed. There is a turnbuckle on the drivecontrol housing to increase tension on thedrive cable. Proceed as follows:1. Turn unit off and disconnect spark plug

increase drive speed.3. Operate mower to test drive speed.

BEFORE STARTING ENGINEADD OIL

Your lawnmower is shipped without oil inthe engine. For type and grade of oil touse, see "ENGINE" in the Maintenancesection of this manual.A CAUTION" DO NOT overfill engine withoil, or it will smoke heavily from the muffleron startup.1. Be sure lawnmower is level.2. Remove oil dipstick from oil fill spout.3. You receive a container of oil with the

unit. Slowly pour the entire containerdown the oil fill spout into the engine.

4. Insert and tighten dipstick.IMPORTANT:• Check oil level before each use. Add oil

if needed. Fill to full line on dipstick.

• Change the oil after every 25 hours ofoperation or each season. You mayneed to change the oil more oftenunder dusty, dirty conditions. See "TOCHANGE ENGINE OIL" in the Mainte-nance section of this manual.

ADD GASOLINE. Fill fuel tank to bottom of tank filler neck.

Do not overfill. Use fresh, clean, regularunleaded gasoline with a minimum of87 octane. Do not mix oil with gasoline.Purchase fuel in quantities that can beused within 30 days to assure fuel fresh-Bess.

• i, CAUTION: Wipe off any spilled oil orfuel. Do not store, spill or use gasolinenear an open flame.,_ CAUTION: Alcohol blended fuels

(called gasohol or using ethanol or metha-nol) can attract moisture which leads toseparation and formation of acids duringstorage. Acidic gas can damage the fuelsystem of an engine while in storage. Toavoid engine problems, the fuel systemshould be emptied before storage of 30days or longer. Empty the gas tank, startthe engine and let it run until the fuel linesand carburetor are empty. Use fresh fuelnext season. See Storage Instructions foradditional information. Never use engineor carburetor cleaner products in the fueltank or permanent damage may occur.

MOWING TIPS_i, CAUTION: Do not use de-thatcher

blade attachments on your mower. Suchattachments are hazardous, wil! damageyour mower and could void your warranty.• Under certain conditions, such as very

tall grass, it may be necessary to raisethe height of cut to reduce pushingeffort and to keep from overloading theengine and leaving clumps of grassclippings. It may also be necessary toreduce ground speed and/or run themower over the area a second time.

• For extremely heavy cutting, reduce thewidth of cut by overlapping previouslycut path and mow slowly.

• For better grass bagging and most cut-ting conditions, the engine speed shouldbe set in the FAST position.

• Pores in cloth grass catchers can be-come filled with dirt and dust with useand catchers wil! collect less grass. Toprevent this, regularly hose catcher off

with water and let dry before using.Keep top of engine around starter clearand clean of grass clippings and chaff.This will help engine air flow and extendengine life.

MULCHING MOWING TIPSIMPORTANT: For best performance,keep mower housing free of built-upgrass and trash. See "CLEANING" in theMaintenance section of this manual.

• The special mulching blade will recurthe grass clippings many times andreduce them in size so that as they fallonto the lawn they will disperse intothe grass and not be noticed. Also, themulched grass will biodegrade quicklyto provide nutrients for the lawn. Alwaysmulch with your highest engine (blade)speed as this will provide the best recut-ting action of the blades.

• Avoid cutting your lawn when it is wet.Wet grass tends to form clumps andinterferes with the mulching action. Thebest time to mow your lawn is the earlyafternoon. At this time the grass hasdried, yet the newly cut area will not beexposed to direct sunlight.

• For best results, adjust the lawn mowercutting height so that the lawn mowercuts off only the top one-third of thegrass blades. If the lawn is overgrown itwill be necessary to raise the height ofcut to reduce pushing effort and to keepfrom overloading the engine and leavingclumps of mulched grass. For extremelyheavy grass, reduce your width of cutby overlapping previously cut path andmow slowly.

• Certain types of grass and grassconditions may require that an area bemulched a second time to completelyhide the clippings. When doing a sec-ond cut, mow across (perpendicular) tothe first cut path.

• Change your cutting pattern from weekto week. Mow north to south one weekthen change to east to west the nextweek. This will help prevent matting andgraining of the lawn.

IMPORTANT: Do not oil or grease plasticwheel bearings. Viscous lubricants willattract dust and dirt thatwill shorten the life ofthe self-lubricating bearings. If you feel theymust be lubricated, use only a dry, powderedgraphite type lubricant sparingly.

LAWN MOWERAlways observe safety rules when per-forming any maintenance.TIRES. Keep tires free of gasoline, oil, or insect

control chemicals which can harm rubber.. Avoid stumps, stones, deep ruts, sharp

objects and other hazards that maycause tire damage.

DRIVE WHEELS

Check rear drive wheels each time youmow to be sure they move freely. Thewheels not turning freely means trash,grass cuttings, etc., may be inside thedrive wheel and dust cover area and mustbe cleaned out to free drive wheels.BLADE CARE

For best results, mower blade must be keptsharp. Replace a bent or damaged blade.A CAUTION: Use only a replacementblade approved by the manufacturer ofyour mower. Using a blade not approvedby the manufacturer of your mower ishazardous, could damage your mower andvoid your warranty.TO REMOVE BLADE1. Disconnect spark plug wire from spark


2. Turn lawn mower on its side. Makesure air filter and carburetor are up.

3. Use a wood block between blade andmower housing to prevent blade fromturning when removing blade bolts.

NOTE: Protect your hands with glovesand/or wrap blade with heavy cloth.4. Remove blade bolts by turning counter-

clockwise.TO REPLACE BLADE1. Position the blade. Be sure trailing edge of

blade (opposite sharp edge) is up towardthe engine and install the blade bolts.

2. Use block of wood between blade andlawn mower housing and tighten theblade bolts, turning clockwise.

• The recommended tightening torque is36-44 ft. Ibs.

IMPORTANT: Blade bolts are heat treat-ed. If bolts need replacing, replace onlywith approved bolts shown in the RepairParts section of this manual.TO SHARPEN BLADENOTE: We do not recommend sharpeningthe blade - but if you do, be sure the blade isbalanced. An unbalanced blade will causeeventual damage to mower or engine.• The blade can be sharpened with a file

or on a grinding wheel. Do not attemptto sharpen while on the mower.

To check blade balance, drive a nail intoa beam or wall. Leave about one inch ofthe straight nail exposed. Place centerhole of blade over the head of the nail.If blade is balanced, it should remain ina horizontal position. If either end of theblade moves downward, sharpen theheavy end until the blade is balanced.

• The grass catcher may be hosed withwater, but must be dry when used.

• Check your grass catcher often for dam-age or deterioration. Through normaluse it wil! wear. If catcher needs replac-ing, replace only with approved replace-ment catcher shown in the Repair Partssection of this manual. Give the lawnmower model number when ordering.

GEAR CASE

. To keep your drive system workingproperly, the gear case and area aroundthe drive should be kept clean and freeof trash build-up. Clean under the drivecover twice a season.

• The gear case is filled with lubricant to theproper level at the factory. The only timethe lubricant needs attention is if service

has been performed on the gear case.• If lubricant is required, use only Texaco

Starplex Premium 1 Grease, Part No.750369. Do not substitute.

NOTE: Multi-viscosity oils (5W30, 10W30etc.) improve starting in cold weather, andyou should check your engine oil level fre-quently to avoid possible engine damagefrom running low on oil.Change the oil after every 25 hours of opera-tion orat least once a year if the lawn moweris not used for 25 hours in one year.Check the crankcase oil level beforestarting the engine and after each five (5)hours of continuous use. TO CHANGE ENGINE OIL

NOTE: Before tipping lawn mower to drainoil, empty fuel tank by running engine untilfuel tank is empty.1. Disconnect spark plug wire from spark


2. Remove oil fill cap/dipstick; lay asideon a clean surface.

3. Tip lawn mower on its side as shownand drain oil into a suitable container.Rock lawn mower back and forth to re-move any oil trapped inside of engine.

7. Continue adding small amounts ofoil and rechecking the dipstick until itreads ful!. DO NOT overfill, or enginewill smoke on startup.

8. Always be sure to retighten oil fill cap/dipstick before starting engine.

9. Reconnect spark plug wire to plug.AIR FILTER

Your engine will not run properly and maybe damaged by using a dirty air filter.Replace the air filter every 100 hours ofoperation or every season, whichever oc-curs first. Service air cleaner more oftenunder dusty conditions.

TO CLEAN AIR FILTER

1. Remove cover.2. Carefully remove cartridge.3. Clean by gently tapping on a flat sur-

face. If very dirty, replace cartridge.,I;I,CAUTION: Petroleum solvents, such askerosene, are not to be used to clean car-tridge. They may cause deterioration of thecartridge. Do not oil cartridge. Do not usepressurized air to clean or dry cartridge.4. Install cartridge, then replace cover.

by scraping to remove build-up of grassand trash.

• Clean engine often to keep trash fromaccumulating. A clogged engine runshotter and shortens engine life.

• Keep finished surfaces and wheels freeof all gasoline, oil, etc.

• We do not recommend using a gardenhose to clean lawn mower unless theelectrical system, muffler, air filter andcarburetor are covered to keep waterout. Water in engine can result in short-ened engine life.

CLEAN UNDER DRIVE COVERClean under drive cover at least twice aseason. Scrape underside of cover withputty knife or similar tool to remove anybuild-up of trash or grass on underside ofdrive cover.

,_WARNING: To avoid serious injury, before performing any service or adjustments:1. Release control bar and stop engine.2. Make sure the blade and all moving parts have completely stopped.3. Disconnect spark plug wire from spark plug and place wire where it cannot come in

The rear deflector, attached between the rearwheels of your mower, is provided to minimizethe possibility that objects will be thrown outof the rear of the mower into the operator'smowing position. If the deflector becomesdamaged, it should be replaced.DRIVE BELT

Your carburetor is not adjustable. If yourengine does not operate properly due to sus-pected carburetor problems, take your lawnmower to a Sears or other qualified servicecenter for repair and/or adjustment.IMPORTANT: Nevertamperwith the enginegovernor, which is factory set for proper en-gine speed. Overspeeding the engine abovethe factory high speed setting can be danger-ous. If you think the engine-governed highspeed needs adjusting, contact a Sears orother qualified service center, which hasproper equipment and experience to makeany necessary adjustments.

Immediatelyprepareyour lawn mower forstorage at the end of the season or if theunit will not be used for 30 days or more.LAWN MOWERWhen lawn mower is to be stored for a periodof time, clean it thoroughly, remove all dirt,grease, leaves, etc. Store in a clean, dry area.1. 2. Lubricate as shown in the Maintenancesection of this manual.

3. Be sure that all nuts, bolts, screws,and pins are securely fastened. Inspectmoving parts for damage, breakageand wear. Replace if necessary.

4. Touch up all rusted or chipped paintsurfaces; sand lightly before painting.

HANDLE

You can fold your mower handle for storage.1. Loosen the two (2) handle knobs on

sides of the upper handle and allowhandle to fold down to the rear.

2. Remove the two (2) handle knobs andcarriage bolts on sides of the lowerhandle and pivot entire handle as-sembly forward and allow it to rest onmower.

3. Reinstall knobs and carriage bolts tolower handle or handle brackets forsafe keeping.

• When setting up your handle from thestorage position, the lower handle willrequire manually locking into the mow-ing position.

IMPORTANT: When folding the handle forstorage or transportation, be sure to foldthe handle as shown or you may damagethe control cables.

FUEL SYSTEM

iMPORTANT: It is important to prevent gumdeposits from forming in essential fuel systemparts such as carburetor, fuel filter, fuel hose,or tank during storage. Alcohol blended fuels(called gasohol or using ethanol or methanol)can attract moisture which leads to separa-tion and formation of acids during storage.Acidic gas can damage the fuel system ofan engine while in storage.. Empty the fuel tank by starting the en-

gine and letting it run until the fuel linesand carburetor are empty.

. Never use engine or carburetor cleanerproducts in the fuel tank or permanentdamage may occur.

. Use fresh fuel next season.NOTE: Fuel stabilizer is an acceptable al-ternative in minimizing the formation of fuelgum deposits during storage. Add stabilizerto gasoline in fuel tank or storage container.Always followthe mix ratio found on stabilizercontainer. Run engine at least 10 minutesafter adding stabilizer to allow the stabilizerto reach the carburetor. Do not empty the gastank and carburetor if using fuel stabilizer.

ENGINE OiL

Drain oi! (with engine warm) and replacewith clean engine oil. (See "ENGINE" inthe Maintenance section of this manual).

Do not store gasoline from one seasonto another.Replace your gasoline can if your canstarts to rust. Rust and/or dirt in yourgasoline will cause problems.

• If possible, store your unit indoors andcover it to protect it from dust and dirt.

• Cover your unit with a suitable protectivecover that does not retain moisture. Donot use plastic. Plastic cannot breathe,which allows condensation to form andwill cause your unit to rust.

IMPORTANT: Never cover mower whileengine and exhaust areas are still warm.A CAUTION: Never store the lawn mowerwith gasoline in the tank inside a buildingwhere fumes may reach an open flame orspark. Allow the engine to cool before stor-ing in any enclosure.
