During the first year of purchase, there will be no charge for warranty service in your home..For your convenience, in-home warranty service will still be available after the first yearof purchase, but a trip charge will apply. This charge will be waived if you transport thetractor to an authorized Craftsman drop-off location. For the nearest authorized location,call 1-800-4-MY-HOME®.

90 DAYS ON BATTERYFor ninety (90) days from date of purchase, if the battery included with this tractor isdefective in material or workmanship (our testing proves it will not hold a charge), it will bereplaced free of charge in your home..

This warranty covers ONLY defects in material and workmanship, Sears will NOT pay for:

. Expendable items that become worn during normal use, including but not limited toblades, spark plugs, air cleaners, belts, and oil filters.

• Standard maintenance servicing, oil changes, or tune-ups.

• Tire replacement or repair caused by punctures from outside objects, such as nails,thorns, stumps, or glass.

• Tire or wheel replacement or repair resulting from normal wear, accident, or improperoperation or maintenance°

. Repairs necessary because of operator abuse, including but not limited to damagecaused by towing objects beyond the capability of the tractor, impacting objects thatbend the flame or crankshaft, or over-speeding the engine..

• Repairs necessary because of operator negligence, including but not limited to, electricaland mechanical damage caused by improper storage, failure to use the proper gradeand amount of engine oil, failure to keep the deck clear of flammable debris, or failureto maintain the equipment according to the instructions contained in the operator'smanual.

• Engine (fuel system) cleaning or repairs caused by fueldetermined to be contaminated oroxidized (stale). In general, fuel should be used within 30 days of its purchase date°

• Normal deterioration and wear of the exterior finishes, or product label replacement,.

All tractor and battery warranty coverage is void if this product is ever used forcommercial or rental purposes.

This warranty applies only while this product is within the United States.

This warranty gives you specific legal rights, and you may also have other rights whichvary from state to state.

I. GENERAL OPERATION

. Read, understand, and follow all instruc-tions on the machine and in the manualbefore starting.

. Do not put hands or feet near rotatingparts or under the machine.. Keep clearof the discharge opening at all times..

• Only allow responsible adults, who arefamiliar with the instructions, to operatethe machine.

• Clear the area of objects such as rocks,toys, wire, etc., which could be picked upand thrown by the blades.

• Be sure the area is clear of bystandersbefore operating.. Stop machine if anyoneenters the area

, Never carry passengers_

. Do not mow in reverse unless absolutelynecessary, Always look down and behindbefore and while backing.

. Never direct discharged material towardanyone, Avoid discharging materialagainst a wall or obstruction. Material mayricochet back toward the operator. Stop theblades when crossing gravel surfaces_

• Do not operate machine without the entiregrass catcher, discharge guard, or othersafety devices in place and working,

• Slow down before turning.,. Never leave a running machine unat-

tended. Always turn off blades, set park-ing brake, stop engine, and remove keysbefore dismounting.

• Disengage blades when not mowing. Shutoff engine and wait for all parts to cometo a complete stop before cleaning themachine, removing the grass catcher, orunclogging the discharge guard,

° Operate machine only in daylight or goodartificial light,

• Do not operate the machine while underthe influence of alcohol or drugs,

• Watch for traffic when operating near orcrossing roadways,,

• Use extra care when loading or unloadingthe machine into a trailer or truck.

. Data indicates that operators, age 60years and above, are involved in a largepercentage of riding mower-related inju-ries, These operators should evaluatetheir ability to operate the riding mowersafely enough to protect themselves andothers from serious injury.

• Follow the manufacturer's recommen-dation for wheel weights or counter-weights,

• Keep machine free of grass, leaves orother debris build-up which can touch hotexhaust t engine parts and burn. Do notallow the mower deck to plow leaves orother debris which can cause build-up tooccur. Clean any oil or fuel spillage beforeoperating or storing the machine,, Allowmachine to cool before storage,

II. SLOPE OPERATION

Slopes are a major factor related to loss ofcontrol and tip-over accidents, which canresult in severe injury or death° Operationon all slopes requires extra caution. If youcannot back up the slope or if you feel uneasyon it, do not mow it.• Mow up and down slopes, not across. Watch for holes, ruts, bumps, rocks, or

otherhidden objects. Uneven terrain couldoverturn the machine. Tail grass can hideobstacles.

• Choose a low ground speed so that youwilt not have to stop or shift while on theslope.

• Do not mow on wet grass, Tires may losetraction.Always keep the machine in gear whengoing down slopes. Do not shift to neutraland coast downhill..

• Avoid starting, stopping, or turning on aslope. If the tires lose traction, disengagethe blades and proceed slowly straightdown the slope

• Keep all movementon the s!opes s!owandgradual. Do not make sudden changesin speed or direction, which could causethe machine to roll over.

• Use extra care while operating machinewith grass catchers or other attachments;they can affect the stability of the machine.Do no use on steep slopes.

• Do not try to stabilize the machine byputting your foot on the ground°

• Do not mow near drop-offs, ditches, orembankments.. The machine could sud-denly roll over if a wheel is over the edgeor if the edge caves ino

Tragic accidents can occur if the operatoris not alert to the presence of children°Children are often attracted to the machineand the mowing activity. Never assumethat children will remain where you lastsaw them..

• Keep children outofthe mowing area andin the watchful care of a responsible adultother than the operator.

• Be alert and turn machine off if a childenters the area.

. Beforeandwhile backing, Iookbehind anddown for small children.

, Nevercarrychildren,evenwiththebladesshut off They may fall off and be seriouslyinjured or interfere with safe machineoperation, Children who have been givenrides in the past may suddenly appear inthe mowing area for another ride and be runover or backed over by the machine.

. Never allow chifdren to operate the ma-chine

o Use extra care when approaching blindcorners, shrubs, trees, or other objectsthat may block your view of a child

IV, TOWING

. Tow only with a machine that has a hitchdesigned for towing. Do not attach towedequipment except at the hitch point.

• Follow the manufacturer's recommenda-tion for weight limits for towed equipmentand towing on slopes.

• Never allow children or others in or ontowed equipment,

• On slopes, the weightofthe towed equip-ment may cause loss of traction and lossof control,

• Travel slowly and allow extra distance tostop

V. SERVICE

SAFE HANDLING OF GASOLINE

To avoid personal injury or property dam-age, use extreme care in handling gasoline.Gasoline is extremely flammable and thevapors are explosive.° Extinguish all cigarettes, cigars, pipes,

and other sources of ignition.• Use only approved gasoline container..• Never remove gas cap or add fuel with

the engine running. Allow engine to coolbefore refueling.

, Never fuel the machine indoors..• Never store the machine or fuel container

where there is an open flame, spark, orpilot light such as on a water heater orother appliances.

° Never fill containers inside a vehicle oron a truck or trailer bed with plastic liner..Always place containers on the groundaway from your vehicle when filling.

• Removegas-poweredequipmentfromthetruck or trailer and refuel it on the ground.If this is not possible, then refuel suchequipment with a portable container, ratherthan from a gasoline dispenser nozzle.

, Keep the nozzle in contact with the rimof the fuel tank or container opening atall times until fueling is complete.. Do notuse a nozzle lock-open device,

• lffuel is spilled on clothing, change clothingimmediately..

• Never overfill fuel tank. Replace gas capand tighten securely

GENERAL SERVICE

o Never operate machine in a closed area_, Keep all nuts and bolts tight to be sure the

equipment is in safe working condition,• Never tamper with safety devices, Check

their proper operation regularly,

• Keep machine free of grass, leaves, orotherdebris build-up. Clean oil orfuelspill-age and remove any fuel-soaked debris,Allow machine to cool before storing

• If you strike a foreign object, stop andinspect the machine. Repair, if necessary,before restarting.

• Never make any adjustments or repairswith the engine running

• Check grass catcher components and thedischarge guard frequently and replacewith manufacturer's recommended parts,when necessary.

• Mower blades are sharp. Wrap the bladeorwear gloves, and use extra caution whenservicing them.

• Check brake operation frequently. Adjustand service as required.

• Maintain or replace safety and instructionlabels, as necessary.

• Be sure the area is clear of bystandersbefore operating Stop machine if anyoneenters the area.

Your new tractor has been assembled at the factory with the exception of those parts leftunassembled for shipping purposes,, To ensure safe and proper operation of your tractorall parts and hardware you assemble must be tightened securely Use the correct tools asnecessary to insure proper tightness.

CHECK TIRE PRESSURE

The tires on your tractorwere overinflated atthe factory for shipping purposes Correcttire pressure is important for best cuttingperformance.. Reduce tire pressure to PSI shown on

CHECK DECK LEVELNESS

For best cutting results, mower housingshould be properly leveled. See "TO LEVELMOWER HOUSING" in the Service andAdjustments section of this manual.

CHECK FOR PROPER POSITIONOF ALL BELTS

See the figures that are shown for replac-ing motion and mower blade drive belts inthe Service and Adjustments section of thismanual° Verify that the belts are routedcorrectly.

CHECK BRAKE SYSTEM

After you learn how to operate your tractor,check to see that the brake is operatingproperly. See "TO CHECK BRAKE" in theService and Adjustments section of thismanual°

HOW TO USE YOUR TRACTOR

TO SET PARKING BRAKE

Your tractor is equipped with an operatorpresence sensing switch. When engine isrunning, any attempt bythe operator to leavethe seat without first setting the parking brakewill shut off the engine°I. Depress clutch/brake pedal all the way

down and hold.2, Pull parking brake lever Lip and release

OPERATING IN REVERSE

Your tractor is equipped with a ReverseOperation System (ROS). Any attempt bythe operator to travel in the reverse direc-tion with the attachment clutch engaged willshut offthe engine unless the ignition key isplaced in the ROS "ON" position.

BEFORE STARTING THE ENGINE

The engine in your tractor has been shipped,from the factory, already filled with summerweight oil.t Check engine oil with tractor on level

clean, reinsert the dipstick and screw captight, wait for a few seconds, remove andread oil level. If necessary, add oil until"FULL' mark on dipstick is reached.. Donot overfill.

• For cold weather operation you shouldchange oil for easier starting (See the oilviscosity chart in the Maintenance sectionof this manual).

ADD GASOLINE

• Fill fuel tank to bottom of filler neck. Donot overfill.. Use fresh, clean, regularunleaded gasoline with a minimum of87 octane.. (Use of leaded gasoline willincrease carbon and lead oxide depositsand reduce valve life). Do not mix oilwithgasoline. Purchase fuel in quantities thatcan be used within 30 days to assure fuelfreshness_

_CAUTION: Wipe off any spilled oil orfuel. Do not store, spill or use gasoline nearan open flame.IMPORTANT: When operating in temper-atures below 32°F(0°C), use fresh, cleanwinter grade gasoline to help insure goodcold weather starting

CAUTION. Alcohol blended fuels (calledgasohol or using ethanol or methanol) canattract moisture which leads to separationand formation of acids during storage.. Acidicgas can damage the fuel system of an enginewhile in storage. To avoid engine problems,the fuel system should be emptied beforestorage of 30 days or longer Drain the gastank, start the engine and let it run until thefuel lines and carburetor are empty. TO START ENGINE

When starting the engine for the first time orif the engine has run out of fuel, it will takeextra cranking time to move fuel from thetank to the engine..I. Siton seat in operating position, depress

TO REPLACE MOWER BLADE DRIVEBELT

The mower blade drive belt may be replacedwithout tools, Park the tractor on level sur-face. Engage parking brake.

BELT REMOVAL-

1. Remove mower from tractor (See "TOREMOVE MOWER" in this section of

manual).2. Work belt off both mandrel pulleys and

idler pulleys.3o Pull belt away from mower°

2. Make sure belt is in all pulley groovesand inside all belt guides..

TO CHECK BRAKE

If tractor requires more than five (5) feet tostop at highest speed in highest gear on alevel, dry concrete or paved surface, thenbrake must be serviced.

You may also check brake by:1. Park tractor on a level, dry concrete or

paved surface, depress clutch/brakepedal all the way down and engageparking brake.

2. Place gear shift lever in neutral position.The rear wheels must lock and skid whenyou try to manually push the tractor forward.tf the rear wheels rotate, then the brakeneeds to be serviced. Contact a Sears orother qualified service center.

TO REPLACE MOTION DRIVE BELT

Park the tractor on level surface. Engageparking brake For assistance, there is abelt installation guide decal on bottom sideof left footrest.

BELT REMOVAL -

1, Remove mower (See "TO REMOVEMOWER" in this section of manual).

NOTE: Observe entire motion drive belt andposition of all belt guides and keepers.2, Remove belt from stationary idler and

clutching idler°3, Remove belt downward from around

engine pulley,4, Pull belt slack toward rear of tractor,

Remove belt upwards from transaxlepulley by deflecting belt keepers.

5, Remove belt from center span keeperand pull belt away from tractor,

BELT INSTALLATION -

1. Carefully work new belt down betweentransaxle belt keepers and onto the inputpulley.

2. Slide belt into the center span keeper..3, Pull belt toward front of tractor and roll

around the top groove of engine pulley,.4. Install belt through stationary idler and

clutching idler.5, Make sure belt is in all pulley grooves

and inside all belt guides and keepers.6. Install mower (See "TO INSTALL MOW-

TRANSAXLE GEAR SHIFT [.EVER NEU-TRAL ADJUSTMENT

The transaxle should be in neutral when thegear shift lever is in neutral (N) (lock gate)position, The adjustment is preset at thefactory; however, if adjustment is needed,proceed as follows:1. Make sure transaxle is in neutral (N).NOTE: When the tractor rear wheels movefreely, the transaxle is in neutral.2_ Loosen adjustment bolt in front of the

right rear wheel.3o Position the gearshift lever in the neutral

(N) position..4. Tighten adjustment bolt securely..NOTE: If additional clearance is needed toget to adjustment bolt, move mower deckheight to the Lowest position.

TO ADJUST STEERING WHEEL ALIGN-MENT

If steering wheel crossbars are not horizontal(left to right) when wheels are positionedstraight forward, remove steering wheeland reassemble with crossbars horizontal.Tighten securely.

FRONT WHEEL TOE-INICAMBERThe front wheel toe-in and camber are notadjustable on your tractor.. If damage hasoccurred to affect the front wheel toe-in orcamber, contact a Sears or other qualifiedservice center.

2. Move throttle control lever to slow posi-tion. With finger, rotate and hold throttlelever against idle speed screw,. Turn idlespeed screw to attain 1750 RPM

3. While still holding throttle lever againstidle speed screw, turn idle mixturevalve full travel clockwise then counter-

clockwise until engine runs rough. Turnvalve to a point midway between thosetwo positions. Release throttle level

ACCELERATION TEST -

4 Move throttle control lever from slowto fast position If engine hesitates ordies, turn idle mixture valve out (coun-terclockwise) It8 turn. Repeat test andcontinue to adjust, if necessary, untilengine accelerates smoothly_

High speed stop is factory adjusted, Do notadjust - damage may resulL

IMPORTANT: Nevertamperwith the enginegovernor, which is factory set for properengine speed. Overspeeding the engineabove the factory high speed setting can bedangerous. • Fully charge the battery for storage..• After a period of time in storage, battery

may require recharging,° To help prevent corrosion and power

leakage during long periods of storage,battery cables should be.. disconnectedand battery cleaned thoroughly (see "TOCLEAN BATTERY AND TERMINALS"in the Maintenance section of this man-

ual) _.• After cleaning, leave cables disconnected

and place cables where they cannot comein contact with battery terminals

ENGINE

FUEL SYSTEM

IMPORTANT, It is important to preventgum deposits from forming in essential fuelsystem parts such as carburetor, fuel hose,ortank during storage, Also, alcohol blendedfuels (called gasohol or using ethanol ormethanol) can attract moisture which leadsto separation and formation of acids duringstorage. Acidic gas can damage the fuelsystem of an engine while in storage., Empty the fuel tank by starting the engine

and letting it run until time fuel lines andcarburetor are empty,.

• Never use engine or carburetor cleanerproducts in the fuel tank or permanentdamage may occur.

• Use fresh fuel next seasonNOTE: Fuel stabilizer is an acceptable al-ternative in minimizing the formation of fuelgum deposits during storage Add stabilizerto gasoline in fuel tank or storage containerAlways followthe mix ratio found on stabilizercontainer. Run engine at least 10 minutesafter adding stabilizer to allow the stabilizer toreach the carburetor, Do not empty the gastank and carburetor if using fuel stabilizer..ENGINE OIL

REVISE EL NIVEL DE ACEITE DEL MOTOREl motor en su tractor ha sido enviado desde laf&brica lleno con aceite de calidad para verano,1.. Revise el aceite del motor con el tractor en

terreno nivelado,2 Remueva la tapa/varilla indicadora de nivel

de relleno del aceite y limpielas, vuelvaa insertar la variila indicadora de nivel yatornille la tapa hasta que quecle apre-tada, espere por unos cuantos segundos,remu_va3a y lea eJnJveJdel aceJie. SJesnecesario, agregue aceite hasta que sehaya alcanzado la marca tleno (FULL) enla varilla indicadora de nivel. No 1oIlenedemasiado.

• Para la operaci6n en clima trio, debe cambfarel aceite para poder arrancar m&s f&citmente(Vea "Tabla de Viscosidad Del Aceite" en tasecci6n de Mantenimento de este manual).

• Para cambiar el aceite del motor, yea la sec-ci6n de Mantenimento en este manual.

AGREGUE GASOLINA• Llene el estanque de combustible, Llene has-

ta la parte inferior det cuelto de reileno delestanque de gasolina. No to ltene demaslado.Use gasolina regular, sin plomo, nueva y lim-pia con el minimo de 87 octanos. (El uso degasolina con plomo aumentar& los dep6sitosde 6xido de plomo y carbono y se reducir_ laduraci6n de la v#,tvula). No mezcle el aceitecon la gaso]ina Para asegurar que la gaso-lina utiltzada sea ffesca compre estanqueslos cuales puedan ser utilizados durante los

_prJmeros 30 dfas.PRECAUCION: Limpie et aceite o el com-

bustible derramado No almacene, derrame ouse gasolina cerca de una llama expuesta.IMPORTANTE: Cuando se opere en temperatu-ras por debajo de 32°F (O°C) use gasolina deinvierno lirnpia y nueva para auedar a asegurarun buen arranque en clima trio

PRECAUClON: Combustibles mezclados conalcohol (conocidos como gasohol, o et uso deetanol o metanol) pueden atraer la humedad,fa que conduce a la separaci6n y formaci6n deQctdos durante et almacenamiento, La gasolinaacidica puede dafiar el sistema del combustiblede un motor durante el almacenamiento. Paraevitar los problemas con el motor, se debevaciar el sistema de combustible antes deguardarlo pot un periodo de 30 dias o m_sVacie el estanque de combustibfe, haga arran-car el motor y h&gato funcionar hasta quefaslineas del combustible y el carburador quedenvacios. La pr6xima temporada use combustibtenuevo.

en el sentido que giran las maniflas del reloja la posici6n de arranque start, y sueite laflare tan pronto como arranque el motor..No haga funcionar el arrancador conttnu-amente por m&s de quince segundos porminuto Si el motor no arranca despu6s deintentarto varias veces, mueva el control defa aceleract6n a ta posici6n de r_pido, es-pere unos cuantos minutos y irate de nuevoSi el motor sigue sin funcionar, mueva elcontrol de la aceleracl6n a fa posici6n deestrangulaci6n y intente de nuevo

ARRANQUE CON TIEMPO TEMPLADO (50°Y MAS)6. Cuando arranque el motor, mueva el control

de la aceleraciOn a la posici6n de r&pido.. Los accesorfos y el embrague ahora pueden

set utJlizados. Si el motor no acepta esta car-ga, vuelva a arrancar el motor para permitirleque se caliente por un minuto utilizando elestrangulador como describido arriba.

de hormig6n seco o pavimentada, presionarel pedal del embraguetfreno hasta el rondoy accionar el freno de estacionamiento,

2. Colocar la palanca de transmisi6n en laposici6n neutra (N).

Las ruedas traseras tiene que bloquearse y patinarcuando se intenta empujar hacta adelante el trac-tor manuaimente. Si las ruedas traseras giran, esnecesario ajustar el freno o sustituir ias zapatas.AJUSTE DEL FRENO1, Presionar el pedal de! embraguetfreno hasta el
