A Brief recent History ofCounty Wicklow

Lawn Tennis Club

The 60’s & 70’s Revival Years

A History ofCounty Wicklow Lawn Tennis Club

1894 - 2011

By Frank Corr

“Love All in Dempsey’s Field”

1952 Tennis Club Presentation Ceremony

1894 - 1972 1999 - 20111974 - 1999

The sorry state of the Club reported in 1963 improved little over the next few years, but in 1968 a group was formed with the objective of achieving another revival. The group included Eamonn O’Higgins, Tom O’Neill, Rory Murphy, Jim McNieve (decd), Jim McAllister (decd), John Doyle, Martin Dempsey (decd), Eddie Power, Gerry Grogan, Peadar Nolan and Dan Murray. Almost immediately they injected a new vitality in the areas of club development and tennis, so that when Brendan Quinn, the Hon. Sec. wrote to Lord Meath seeking yet another renewal of the Lease, he was able to report that ‘This year has been the most successful in the club’s history.

It is the first year ever that we fielded four league teams, the first team was 1st. in Wicklow to win a Class in the League - and we won seven cups at Championships.’ Membership had grown to 150 and the Club

could afford to re-sod its courts at a cost of £350. It had also made an approach to BordFailte seeking funds to build a Club House, on the basis that the Tourism Authority had already supported a similar project in Greystones. Lord Meath appears to have been impressed by this report of better days for CWLTC and he responded by saying that ‘there should be no problem’ in renewing the lease, but also pointing out that the Club owed the Estate for a half year’s rent. On 1st December the Estate wrote again, this time pointing out that a year’s rent was due. The Club duly stumped up and then received a refund of £60 as they had in fact, overpaid. In December of that year the Meath Estate received a letter from Mrs. Pauline Drysdale, Hon. Sec. of Vevay Road Table Tennis Club which said : ‘We have heard many rumours concerning its (CWLTC) future, the land is being sold or other parties are interested in the present Club and wish to take it

The Clubhouse, 1999 to Present

10

over. No one really seems to know the real answer, least of all the Tennis Club, whose comments seem very vague’. Solicitors for the Meath Estate wrote to the Tennis Club seeking clarification of its future plans and were duly informed that CWLTC was to continue in existence at its traditional home. Eamonn O’Higgins recalls those days: ‘As well as trying to maintain the remaining sixgrass courts to their previous standard, plus the fall of membership, it was proving difficult but they (the Committee) soldiered on. By 1968/69 Gerry Grogan, Club Captain, with the remaining few loyal members tried to rally support. He approached his old friend Martin Dempsey, known as ‘Junior”’ to one and all.

As the new Chairman, Martin recruited help from former school pals, rugby players, and previous juniors. He threw himself into the task, cajoling, coaxing and

persuading myself and many others to roll up our sleeves and save the ‘Old Club’. ‘Junior’ was the consummate clubman. When it came to raising money, holding functions, mowing courts, painting the Club, it didn’t matter what your profession, craft or skill was, a job was assigned to you. ‘Must open in time for the tennis season’. That was his call. Line marking, lobbing trees, raffles, serving beer, everyone was roped in, Students, Bakers, Auctioneers, Solicitors, Publicans, Carpenters, Salesmen, Accountants, Insurance men, we had them all. Repairing the old wooden Club House was a challenge, but using surplus car packing crates and gallons of black emulsion we held the edifice together. A summer of craic and endless fun under our popular and jovial Chairman as the place sprang to life again. The tennis playing side of things wasn’t forgotten. In our concern to qualify for the Summer Leagues we did everything to improve the look and condition of our now modest six courts. So much so, that at the AGM later that year, questions were asked of our Treasurer Peter Doyle, as to why he had approved an extra 4s/6d for petrol for the mower (25c today). Though funds were tight, everyone approved. It was money well spent. These days hundreds of thousands have been spent maintaining our Club. It was a different era.’ The administration side of the Club lurched along into the 70’s, frustrated as always by the lack of funds. Our main source of income were subscriptions, and at thirty shillings (2 euro) per member, the yield was very small, bar receipts were next, functions and extensions and donations from friends and supporters kept us going’. ‘This is best illustrated by the occasion of one night when the bar was packed, wall to wall.Since it had been rebuilt from within from surplus car packing cases, it was now double cladded with no windows and no house clock. So once in there, time stood still, at least that’s what some of the members used to say next day. That night it was

hot and extremely smokey and someone complained. Through the cloud of thick blue haze, Junior’s voice rose, and he explained that due to a shortage of funds the Club had regrettably been unable to put in an air vent. He called for donations, as only he could, and several prominent business people present forked out £40 to £50, quite a sum in 1970. On reflection next day, Junior realised we had much more pressing need for the money such as rates, rent, ILTA Fees etc., so as his second in command I was dispatched to buy a vent cover for around £5. We duly cut a hole in the inner wall and secured the vent. Some weeks later the bar was again jammed, and visibility was down to zero with cigarette smoke. One of the original donors was present and suggested we open the new vent. Junior winked and called on me to slide back the vent. ‘That’smuch better, well done Junior’, everyone agreed and took an extra deep breath. Maybe it’s the power of auto suggestion, or just the craic was so good that night in the CWLTC that nobody noticed there was no fresh air. That false vent went on working to everybody’s satisfaction until the Clubhouse burned down.’

In its last days The Pavilion was ‘simply a fire hazard’ according to veteran member Henry Cairns, and on 25th. September 1972, it did finally go up in flames. Eamonn O’Higgins remembers the night: ‘As usual the Pavilion had been boarded up

and shuttered at the end of the season. It was a winter’s night and I was travelling home on the 84 bus Dublin to Greystones, when I heard the conductor telling another passenger about some clubhouse ablaze. I asked was it the County Wicklow Tennis Club. As Vice Chairman I had more than a passing interest. Unfortunately it was true, a charred skeleton frame was all that remained of our distinctive Swiss chalet building, which had been part of Bray’s Architectural Heritage since 1894.’ Some months later, two young boys, aged 9 and 13, were charged at Bray Children’s Court in connection with the blaze. They admitted setting fire to newspapers at the Pavilion

and running away. The younger boy was discharged and the other was given the benefit of the Probation of Offenders Act. A Malicious Damages claim was subsequently lodged, probably by the Meath Estate. Curiously, in the same month that the Pavilion was burned down the Club signed a new three year lease at an annual rent of £52 plus Rates. Following the fire, the Club was without changing rooms or a place for social gatherings, but the Committee

worked hard to have facilities in place for the opening of the 1973 season. Martin Dempsey, our Chairman had an inspired idea. He got hold of an old caravan and partitioning off the centre, it served as gents and ladies changing rooms. At night time, when playing was finished, the partition was taken down and the caravan became a temporary bar. Thus we were able to save our Club Licence and maintain our unbroken record of fielding teams for the Summer League. The principal goal that year was the planning and funding for a new Clubhouse. John Doyle came to the rescue by getting his friend and architect Lindsey Johnston to design a modern new premises. Little funds and very generous help from members, friends and supporters was needed to get the project to fruition. Builders like George Glynn and the Nolan brothers, Sean and Peadar, gave of their time, expertise and materials. In the initial years, committee meetings used scaffolding planks for seating, and although we never had the money to finish off the interior quite as envisaged, everyone was happy and proud of our new Clubhouse’. Among the novel fund-raising schemes was one which enabled Club members to buy a brick of the building for £10. The new Clubhouse was opened in 1974. Reporting on the AGM of that year, under a heading of ‘New Tennis Club Has All Mod Cons’ the ‘Wicklow People’ said that ‘the new premises, designed by Lindsay Johnstone has changing rooms with showers, kitchen, bar, dance hall, committee and store rooms on the second floor’. Martin Dempsey was re-elected chairman at that AGM with Elva Walsh (secretary), John Sheehan (treasurer).

The new modern building with its contemporary design was never fully completed. Neither was it without its critics. Members who remember the building variously describe it as ‘very contemporary’ or ‘not a great job’. The Rates Return for Bray in that year shows that the Club had a Rateable Valuation of £24 and paid rates

of £26.15.0. Co. Wicklow Cricket Club also remained on the Rates Book with a valuation of £11.50, although most of its land was now occupied by housing.

EAMONN O’HIGGINS was elected Chairman in 1975. ‘My priority for the further development of CWLTC was

to extend and improve our tennis season. This could only be achieved by playing Winter Leagues. In order to reach that goal we needed hard courts.Apart from the obvious question of raising thousands of pounds, some saw it as sacrilege to rip up the old grass courts, even if they weren’t in the best of condition. However, I pressed on, with the brave support of my committee: Brian Quinlan, Brian Driver, Elva Walsh, Tom Kavanagh, Kay Nolan, Caroline Carroll and many others who rallied and saw our dream become a reality’.Before that happened, however, the Club negotiated with Southern Relays which was given permission to lay television cables along part of the site. Play continued on the hallowed grass courts and CWLTC staged the Eastern Counties Junior Championships. Plans for the new hard courts were advanced fairly quickly and En Tout Cas, a French company, won the contract to lay three new courts. Paying the bill was a struggle however and Hon. Treasurer Rory Murphy, a teacher at Presentation College, proposed a levy of £5 on all members. This was supplemented by a bank loan. The hard courts opened in 1976, offering year-round tennis to Club members. They were not entirely successful however as the sandy surface became very slippery in frosty conditions and play was not always possible. Lord Meath was impressed though, telling Eamonn O’Higgins that the project ‘was a mark of our commitment and would secure the long term future of the Club’.The laying of the hard courts also changed the work of the Club’s Groundsman, Bob Hempenstall, who had lovingly tended the lawn courts for many years,

14

presenting them in pristine condition for every season and particularly for the Open Championships. He continued to tend the remaining grass courts and to maintain the grounds to a very high standard. He passed that tradition to his son Dermot, the Club’s current Groundsman, who continues to maintain the courts, grounds and clubhouse impeccably and who is a friend to each and every member. Year-Round Tennis served to greatly enhance the attraction of CWLTC among a rapidly-growing Bray population and during the 1970s the Club attracted hundreds of new members including families which are still active, some in the second and third generations. CWLTC also established the Eastern Counties Junior Championships, under the leadership of Eamonn O’ Higgins, Gerry Grogan and Brian Quinlan. For playing members, however, The Club Championships was thepremier event of the year. Players engaged in many a battle and records of all sorts were established and broken. In one epic series Brian Quinlan and Sean Shanley beat Dan Murray and George Hennessey in the Club Championships, Men’s Doubles Final, for eleven years on the trot.

Around this time CWLTC became as renowned for its social life as for its tennis. Dave Carroll had remarkable success in organising late-night gigs in the new Clubhouse with big stars like Ronnie Drew, Donal Lunny, Planxty, the Ludlow Trio and Christy Moore often turning up to do a few songs. ‘Although the venue was small, they loved the intimate atmosphere. Those small audiences, the lucky ones to get in (as we always turned away three to four times more people than we could accommodate) for a couple of pounds enjoyed an unforgettable experience, and of course the Club earned some well needed revenue’ Eamonn O’Higgins recalls.En Tout Cas courts were replaced after five years when new hard courts were commissioned, this time with a surface of painted tarmac. While these new courts were being laid members were allowed to avail of courts at Loreto College, just down the Vevay Road. In that same year (1981) yet another five year lease renewal was agreed with Lord Meath, but this time the annual rent reached £200. Five years later, at the next renewal it reached £300 pa. End
