*LAW ENFORCEMENT EXPLORER PROGRAM*
Law Enforcement Exploring provides educational training programs for young adults on the purposes,
mission, and objectives of law enforcement. The program provides career orientation experiences,
leadership opportunities, and community service activities. The primary goals of the program are to help
young adults choose a career path within law enforcement, gain training to be successful in a law
enforcement career, and to challenge them to become responsible citizens of their communities and
nation. Nationally, over 33,000 Explorers and 9,000 adult volunteers participate in Law Enforcement
Exploring, and the program is also supported by the National Sheriff’s Association and the International
Association of Chiefs of Police.
The most popular Law Enforcement Exploring careers include:
• Police Officers
• Federal Agents
• State Police/Highway Patrol
• Military Police
• Correction Officers
Typical Law Enforcement Explorer training includes, but should not be limited to:
Tactical Building Searches, Patrol Procedures, History of Law Enforcement, Criminal Law, Arrest Search
& Seizure, Report Writing, Crisis Intervention, Ethics, Self Defense, Traffic Stops, Basic First Aid &
CPR, Radio Communications Procedures, Handcuffing, Public Relations, Firearms Training, DUI
Enforcement, Ride Along Program, Accident Investigation, Active Shooter Response, etc…
Typical Owensboro Police Dept. Explorer activities include:
Guest Speakers, Shop with a Cop, Good fellows Christmas Party, OPD Police Awareness Day, Christmas
Parade, National Night out, Golf Scramble, Pedal with the Police, School Events, and many others…
*Every summer OPD Explorers also have the option to attend the Kentucky Law
Enforcement Explorer Academy (KLEEA). Explorers live the police academy lifestyle, and
are put to the test physically and mentally. Explorers experience what it is like to go through
the police academy just like real police officers do.
Police Explorers will have an opportunity to

The requirements to become an Explorer with the Owensboro Police Department are:
• Be 14 years of age and completed the 8th grade, and no older than 21 years of age
• Complete an application with the City of Owensboro and Boy Scouts of America
• Maintain minimum passing grades in all school subjects
• Undergo a background investigation
• Pass an oral interview
