This class will discuss the details of sex offenders including the grooming and offending process, incarceration, treatment, determination of risk levels and supervision when they are released. Who are sex offenders, what offense must they commit to be labeled a sex offender, when are they released from correctional facilities and where do they go? Once an offender is incarcerated for a sex offense, many processes occur to aid in rehabilitation and treatment. Determination of sex offense risk is the beginning of a process to categorize the risk a sex offender has of reoffending. Become knowledgeable about sex offenders, some of whom may live in your communities. Learn about the End of Confinement Review, Predatory Offender Registration, Community Notification, Intensive Supervised Release, Civil Commitment and sex offender treatment.

Emotional Intelligence and Effectiveness in Public Safety Research shows that 85 percent of what sets successful public safety personnel apart from those who struggle is their ability to use emotional intelligence (EI) effectively. EI is a type of intelligence that involves the ability to monitor one’s own and others’ emotions, to discriminate among them, and to use the information to guide your thinking and actions. It has major impact over the ability to influence others, resolve conflict, and see our own actions more clearly in times of stress. EI is particularly important because public safety personnel engage in managing conflict on a daily basis. It also influences our personal and professional relationships as well as our general happiness and satisfaction with our lives. People with strong EI tend to be more successful professionally and more able to make positive changes at work.
Topics include:
• Introduction to emotional intelligence (EI)
• The emotional and rational brain
• The importance of EI and public safety personnel effectiveness
• Measuring our EI
• The cost of weak EI; personally and professionally
• Maintaining/Improving EI

Generational Diversity in the Workplace
Our workplace has become a playing field of competing viewpoints and values as five generations share the same workspace. In today’s fast-paced, ever-changing work environment, finding ways to maximize the performance of every person has never been more vital. Understanding and appreciating one another’s perspective has always been the key to effectiveness and productivity at work; in today’s multi-generational workplace, an organization’s success depends on it.

Confronting the Tough Stuff: Outside my Comfort Zone
Unfortunately, we can experience a great deal of discomfort in workplace situations. After all, we spend a large part of our waking hours working with people very different from ourselves, to achieve goals that may or may not be clear or realistic. It’s no wonder that situations emerge that we feel are outside of our comfort zones to address or solve. Discuss some of the most common (and most dreaded) examples of such situations and discover practical ways to approach each. Leave the class with a new repertoire of responses that will expand your comfort zone and give you increased confidence as an employee, supervisor, or manager.

Think Like A Strategist
It is difficult for an individual or a company/department to progress if where you are and where you have been is not first understood. An evaluation of mission, goals, and strategies can provide discoveries that define a revised or new course of action. It isn’t enough in a competitive marketplace to depend on gut feelings or on doing what has worked in the past. To move to the next level, individuals and companies/departments need to analyze first, plan second, and execute last.
You will learn how to:
• Assess your current strategy
• Determine the helpful and non-helpful practices of the past
• Stimulate necessary change and build employee support
• Prioritize strategic efforts in parallel with the big picture
• Incorporate company/department culture in rollout of revised or new strategy
• Execute a strategy after careful analysis and planning

Difficult Conversations—Handling Underperformers
Workplace conversations can be challenging and especially so when you (or your manager) perceive someone on your team as an underperformer. Such necessary conversations can elicit a high level of conflict avoidance in the best of us. Being able to objectively recognize a situation for what it is and know you have eliminated any hint of discrimination, bias and other vulnerabilities is critical for such difficult conversations to have both a desired effect and a lasting impact.
You will learn how to:
• Set expectations up front to help steer employees clear of underperformance from the start
• Recognize the warning signs of underperformance and accompanying micro-expressions
• Understand employee motivations that can prompt them to perform at their best
• Apply your innate critical thinking skills to effectively analyze the situation for possible discrimination or bias

limitations. Critical thinking allows you to get at what lies underneath and then generate productive ideas.
