The Parish Newsletter is published by the Parish Council six times a year for the benefit of the parish residents.

However, articles written do not necessarily reflect the views of the Parish Council.

Welcome to issue no 140

Hello summer! As you can see the sun has bought some colour to our face. In this issue you’ll find lots of news from around the

parish, if you were at Open Farm Sunday you might be featured n our centre page spread and we’ve been visiting our local Nursery and Toddler groups on pages 9 & 21. A new column appears on page 6, ‘The View from Sagrista’ and is it true a Hollywood Ce-lebrity is going to be a permanent feature of our new country park? p. 18. Also have you ever wondered Where the money

raised from filling those Charity bags posted through your letter-box goes? –you may be surprised! Read more on page 14.

Summer must be here as Laverstock Open Gardens are on their way and the Evergreen Club Cream Tea and Ploughmans Lunch afternoons (see diary dates page 64). The board walk is looking

rather fine thanks to some creative input from pupils at Leehurst Swan School (page 25) and there’s lots on around the parish to

ensure this summer will be packed with events and activities whatever the weather– see mobile library timetable page 8 in

case of rain ;0)

Ian McLennan in his role as a resident of the parish and Andrew Prince our Parish Clerk have been working hard to build our

advertising offer and more changes are on the horizon. Costs have been rising and we really need a volunteer to help the PN team with the advertising, please get in touch if you can help! We’d love to know what you think of our new look. If you’ve five

minutes to spare to give us your feedback email: [email protected]

or drop a note in to the parish clerk (see page 58).

Meet the Chair

We all want to know who is looking after our interests, so let's start with the Parish Chairman.

Ron is starting his third year as Chairman, having joined the parish coun-

cil in 2006, during the Old Sarum Airfield Conservation Area process.

A Ford resident, Ron's Army career was followed by a successful career

as a branch bank manager (ideal skills to keep his fellows in order and to

look after our funds!). Married to Sarah, also a Parish Councillor and with

two young adult children and assorted pets, the couple can often be seen

walking the parish footpaths.

When asked to pinpoint why he became a Parish Councillor, Ron quickly

answers that it was his keenness to protect the rural assets of the par-

ish. This remains his main interest, although he has many other commit-

ments as Chairman.

Our Parish Chairman has a Chain of Office. As we are outside the city,

the Mayor of Salisbury has no jurisdiction in our parish. If your communi-

ty, group or club has an event or occasion which would warrant our own

Civic Head to be in attendance, why not send the invitation via the Parish

clerk.

For a full report on all the business of the Parish Council and on wider parish affairs do please log on to the parish website which is a great resource. www.laverstock-ford.co.uk

SpireWeather Review: March-April 2013

I will start this review with some remarkable contrasts for the UK:

March 2012: Third warmest on recordMarch 2013: Second coldest on record

April 2012: 243% average rainfall April 2013: 52% average rainfall

The start to Spring 2013 was in stark contrast to last year. For the UK as a whole March was the second coldest on record tied with 1947 and only marginally less cold than 1962. In Central England it was the coldest since 1892, and for the first time since 1949 it was colder than the three preceding winter months. Our warmest March temperature of 15.4°C (60°F) was recorded on the 5th and the coldest of -4.2°C (24°F) on Easter Sunday – in fact the 31st was the coldest Easter day since records began, a record previous-ly set in 1986. It was a fairly wet month in Salisbury with 158% average rainfall - 74mm (2.9”) compared with an average of 46.9mm (1.8”). The 16th was a particularly wet day with 23.6mm (0.9”). On the 28th some exceptionally dry air brought our record low humidity of just 23% which is lower than the humidity in most of our homes. ‘Northern blocking’ continued to push the Jet Stream much further south with high pressure dominant to the north and low pressure to the south bringing very wet conditions to Iberia and a cold easterly air flow across the UK.

This pattern continued into April resulting in a dry month with just 68% of the area’s average rainfall - 38.8mm (1.5”) compared to last April’s record-breaking 126.6mm (5”). The 13th was the month’s wettest day with a total of 9.2mm (0.4”). April’s max-imum temperature of 19.3°C (67°F) was recorded on the 23rd whilst the minimum of -3.1°C (26°F) occurred on the 3rd . The 3rd was also SpireWeather’s record windiest period which, given the low temperatures, low humidity and a bitter east wind, produced some of the lowest wind chill or ‘feels like’ temperatures of the year. The following day was a notably cold day across Southern England with snow flurries and a high in Salisbury of just 3.6°C (38°F).

Page 7: Laverstock & Ford Parish Council Newsletter 140 Jul/Aug 2013

Laverstock & Ford Parish Newsletter 7

Until recently May was shaping up to be slightly cooler but drier than average with high pressure dominating. After a glorious Bank Holiday weekend, this is now looking less likely with the Jet Stream diving south again bringing cool, unsettled conditions which look set to prevail during the middle of the month. The weather patterns aren’t quite the same as last year but at the moment it doesn’t bode well...

Are we in for another disappointing start to summer? Find out in our forthcoming bi-monthly SpireWeather Reviews or follow us on Twitter for the latest weather news. The View from SAGRISTA

Contrary to rumours that Laverstock has been chosen to spearhead Prince Charles wild flower meadows initiative the overgrown verges of Laverstock have simply missed a grass cut. Balfour Beatty’s (don’t they fix railway lines?) maintenance teams have taken time out to learn about safety gog-gles and hard hats. How does that song from Cabaret go? “If you could only see it through my eyes…” If all our grass verges were allowed to grow long, except where there are road safety issues of course, how many more butter-flies might we see. When I was young there were Red Admirals and Pea-cocks in profusion but I cannot remember when I last saw one. However, it seems that my dreams of a wilderness in Laverstock are short lived and by the time you read this we will be back to manicured grass, which will please some, but perhaps not all of our residents.

Have you ever heard the term ‘Stick and Flick’? Are you one of the 10 million or so dog owners in the UK? I am one and greatly enjoy walking my two mutts in the countryside around Laverstock for an hour or more every day. Which brings me to my next topic; dog poo. No one likes picking it up, in-cluding me. I have my own rules and adhere to them. My dogs will often go in my garden and when I am out on paths and cut grass I will keep them at heel and try and stop them from making a mess and if they do I will clear it up.

As much as possible I walk my dogs in open countryside such as the mag-nificent down land around our parish and here I have a different rule: my dogs can go anywhere and both have been trained to move well away from the path before making a mess. If they poo on a path I get a stick, and flick it into the bushes or long grass. But dog poo is everywhere, on the grass at the top of Pilgrims Way, up School Lane and Green Lane, in the middle of the path across the downs and on the trail around Hampton Park.

There is a hard core of dog owners out there who will not pick up their dog’s poo under any circumstances. Warning signs, more bins, free dog poo bags are all great ideas but will have no effect on these people. Can we persuade or shame these people into compliance? Or should we, like Sudbury Town Council in Suffolk, employ a parish community warden (at great expense) and empower him or her to issue on the spot fines of £80 per offence. Do you have any ideas? Please let me know (see also Old Sarum Mum’s view http://oldsarummum.wordpress.com/2013/05/31/being-neighbourly/ )

MINI MARATHON

The annual Salisbury Schools’ Mini Marathon took place on Saturday 18 May over the Downs behind the secondary schools, and once again the weather was kind to us. The mini marathon has become a well known and much anticipated event for local 7-11 olds, who spend the weeks leading up to the races practising their cross-country skills with their school-friends. This year over 1,300 runners representing 31 local Salisbury primary schools took part. The morning started with the Parent’s Fun Run, followed by the Under 9 Girls, Under 9 Boys, Under 11 Girls and finally the Under 11 Boys races. A great time was had by all the runners and their many supporters who cheered them on along the route.

We are grateful to the many local organisations without whose support we would be unable to hold such a huge event every year. These in-clude Spire FM, Salisbury Journal, Sole Obsession, 3663, W Smalls, Fremar Communications, St John’s Ambulance, Occasions Marquees, Erak Simpson, Brandon Tool Hire, the Friends of St Andrew’s School and Hurdcott Landscapes.

Special thanks go to the 3 Laverstock secondary schools, for not only allowing us to run across their land year after year, but for also provid-ing so many wonderful pupils to assist us on the morning, and also to the Laverstock Club, Murphy’s and Bishop Wordsworth’s School for their help with the parking arrangements.

Finally, on behalf of all the schools who took part, a huge thank you to the local residents of Laverstock for their ongoing support of this im-portant and much loved event in the local schools’ sporting calendar. It is wonderful to see our local community working together every year to help make the mini marathon a success. We hope that those of you who came along enjoyed it as much as we all did and look forward to seeing everyone again in 2014.

Green grows the Nursery oh!

Angela Riley, Nursery Manager, tells of exciting happenings at Old Sarum. Using the recent grant received from 'Stop Loan Sharks', an organisation which redistributes the reclaimed funds from prosecuted Loan Sharks into community projects, the nursery has set up a 'gardening club'. All the age groups (2-4 years old) participate and have together, turned and weeded the soil and planted a mixture of fruit, veg-etables and some wild flowers. In the process they took a close look at the soil to see what lived there. The usual suspects included millipedes but the biggest cheer was when they all shouted "We've found a worm!"

The project organiser is staff member Kara, who can include green fingered expertise on her CV. Kara ensure that the children water their crop and together they observe the different rates of growth. Lisa, another staff member has helped the children create a display of photos and children's drawings of insects. Parents, staff and children all retell the experiences of each garden visit to reinforce the learning and memo-ries.

Old Sarum Nursery have an exciting Summer ahead with a trip to Cholderton Charlie Farm planned for July - volunteers are needed to ensure the trip goes ahead.

Hartbeebs music sessions take place every Thursday morning until the end of term. An exhilarating music and exercise happening which the children love.

The older children are preparing for their 'Transition' to Reception Class of Old Sarum Primary. The close relationship between the Nursery and Reception ensures there are no surprises for the young ones when they join 'Big School' in September.

Learning is fun at the Nursery, because 'Alternate IT' has used a blender to create smoothies and a whisk to produce Angel Delight. Children have participated in listening sound activities, designed and made real flower mobiles and wax painting, practised ball skills and many have learnt to ride a two wheeled bike. Or some have just enjoyed a quiet moment in the new wig-wams. Whether you are a budding Nigella, Hockney, Beck-ham, Hoy or Pocahontas, Old Sarum Nursery has it all!

OUR COMMUNITY MATTERS—NEW WEBSITE! http://southernwilts.ourcommunitymatters.org.uk/

Old Sarum New Community Centre

A small team has assembled to work on the new Community Centre to be

built in Pheasant Drive, adjacent to the Playing field and opposite the

school. The anticipated opening is Easter/Spring next year. however,

Wiltshire Council has tasked their project manager Pete Smith with dealing

with Persimmon to ensure everything is as we would want it. The planning

application was approved some time ago. The team are now finalising the

infrastructure and layout internally, to 'future proof' it for existing, known

new and yet to appear users. Apart from Pete Smith, Southern Area

Board Manager Tom Bray and Property Manager John Price are also

involved from WC. The team is completed by our Wiltshire & Parish

Councillors, together with Residents Association, Community Room and

Nursery representatives.

Plans are for one large hall and one smaller but decent sized room which

can be divided into two rooms, with a flexible soundproof partition. Current

debate is about storage and whether Persimmon will provide a Commer-

cial Kitchen within the funds available. Eventually a new management

committee will be formed to be responsible for the centre. Probably a

mixture of users and volunteers from the community - some with

experience and some who can volunteer to bring skills, energy and com-

mitment to the new centre, to ensure its success. It could be you!

BISHOPDOWN FARM RESIDENTS' ASSOCIATION (BFRA) NEWS MAY 13

For those who may have missed it we now have two Salisbury City Council-lors on the BFRA Committee following the recent elections. We believe this can only help with the fact that BF/HP1 is split between Salisbury City and L&FPC. HP2 lies within L&FPC and arguments continue about where the 'country park' lies (history says in L&FPC but an error may have crept into the boundary map when SDC was partly absorbed by WC!). The BFRA Com-mittee is small in numbers and we are keen to recruit some new members to assist in particular with the environmental side of things (HP2/'country park', HP Trail, litter, general condition of the estate etc). If you just want to join on a litter pick then please let us know.

First Responders: Community First Responder (CFR) volunteers are trained

to attend emergency calls received by the ambulance service and provide

care until the ambulance arrives.

Volunteers can arrive at an emergency scene in a matter of minutes, as they

are sent to calls in their local area. The schemes operate as a community

partnership between St John Ambulance and local ambulance service trusts.

Having someone in the community who has been trained in first aid and can

reach the patient quickly makes all the difference. Volunteers operate as

part of a rota system from their own home or place of work. They are dis-

patched at the same time as an ambulance via ambulance control to attend

'immediately life – threatening' calls. Community First Responders are dis-

patched to calls under normal road conditions using their own cars. They do

not have the authority to drive under emergency conditions. Sometimes

they can simply be a very vital second pair of hands to an ambulance crew

when they arrive. New volunteers and those wishing to qualify for this role

will need to attend an approved training course which includes assessment,

and will be required to re-qualify annually. L&FPC is keen to find out if there

are any residents interested in becoming a CFR within this widely spaced

parish.

Charity Bags: You are probably fed up the “charity” bags that are pushed

through our doors on a regular basis. While there is little that can be done

to stop this, you do need to know that many do not actually benefit regis-

tered charities. These companies are often only obliged to give very small

amounts of money to the charity they purport to be raising money for, and

many have no connection whatsoever to any charity.

Page 17: Laverstock & Ford Parish Council Newsletter 140 Jul/Aug 2013

Laverstock & Ford Parish Newsletter 17

The Charity Commission have heard of many cases where a charity would get

something ridiculous like £100 for every tonne of clothing collected, whereas

the company collecting the clothes were raising £1000s from selling the clothes

on! A quick check of a weekly haul of 4 bags through the door suggest that only

one seems to have any link to a registered charity. Should you wish to donate

this way and want to check the 'charity' credentials the Charity Commission

have an information page at:

http://www.charity-commission.gov.uk/faqs/running_a_charity/

fundraising/298.aspx

In addition, Greentrees School and Bishopdown Farm Pre-school both collect

textiles, clothes, shoes, handbags etc every 6 months or so to raise funds for

the school/pre-school (they get 50p per kilo of items donated). If local resi-

dents would rather support a local cause with their old clothes, then please

contact Maggie Hill on 01722 502274.

Hartley Way Roundabout: The BFRA have for some time been trying to get

something done about the state of the weed infested roundabout that greets

you on entering from Pearce Way. There has been minimal 'care' of this round-

about since it was built in 2000. Having finally tracked down the right bit of

Wiltshire Council and determined that we need a s96 agreement we also found

that the PC had to approve the BFRA doing something about the roundabout as

well. Unfortunately, this saga may continue for some time as it appears that

the PC may have to apply for the s96 and the hideous list of requirements/

restrictions is enough to put off anybody even pulling a weed out. Our back up

plan is to force WC to meet their own requirements!

HP Trail: After a long wait we finally have the kissing gate at the end of Pearce

Way – thanks to the hard work of volunteers from the Community Farm with

some BFRA assistance. This attractive feature is made of long lasting Chestnut

and makes a considerable difference to the entrance to HP1. However, the

gate was vandalised within a couple of weeks of installation. It would appear

that mindless yobs hanging around the 'layby' thought they would amuse

themselves by kicking the uprights out of the gate. We are trying to source re-

placements with the assistance of the Community Farm. Our regular litter pick

produced yet another massive haul of litter which was quickly collected for dis-

posal by WC. Amazingly, we found that some residents bagged up their garden

cuttings in black bags then threw them into the bushes. There is NO NEED to do

this as the council supply GREEN BINS for this very purpose.

Page 18: Laverstock & Ford Parish Council Newsletter 140 Jul/Aug 2013

18 Laverstock & Ford Parish Newsletter

There are others who make their contempt obvious by throwing their garden

waste over their fence although at least it is not shrouded in plastic. The Trail is

planned to be part of the 'country park' which should arise out of HP2, clearly a

good deal of education is needed if this valuable new resource is not to be ru-

ined by the selfish few.

Those who do walk in our local countryside will have noticed the horses teth-ered out on the grass to the western side of the Trail. The legality of this is sus-pect and there will no doubt be action from council officials if/when the coun-try park plan is realised. A number of residents have raised their concerns to the BFRA about the horses and the RSPCA have been called in to check their condition. A recent incident when the number of horses increased did result in the RSPCA swiftly removing some to proper care.

HP2: Progress remains stalled (end-May) as we understand the sale of the land has still not been completed. There was some activity with a contractor testing the soil but no-one is any the wiser as to when construction will start. A prelim-inary draft plan for the layout of the 'country park' has been put on a Country Park Design page at http://www.environmentpartners.co.uk/. This was done to start generating ideas and feedback from everyone so that a properly costed proposal can be produced for L&FPC.

One Stop Shop: We can finally report partial success after many months of pressing Sanctuary Housing. Minor repairs have been completed (such as the broken down pipe) and we were promised that the bigger items in the car park would be attended to but the contractor was off 'sick'. It has now gone well past the suggested delay of a couple of weeks so we will continue to apply pres-sure on the landlord. We have also noted that the minor repairs were generally of a poor standard and this will also be fed back to Sanctuary.

Police Update: Following on from the rise in thefts from sheds and outbuild-ings which your Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinator will have told you about (You don't have one? It is easy to fix!), the Police are currently warning of thefts from front gardens. It would appear that this is being done for resale as flower pots are being emptied. You might wish to mark any items that you keep at the front of your house.

BFRA Website: Don't forget to make regular visits to keep up to date with what is going on. The site is kept up to date and there are a number of useful links to other sites. Com-municate with your Committee at: www.thebfra.co.uk.

Salisbury Medical Practice

would like to take this opportunity to keep the parish residents informed about how your local Bishopdown surgery will benefit from the forthcoming move to Fountain House.

We need to know what YOU want?

We will continue to run our usual services from the Bishopdown Surgery but you will be able to access some new exciting services from our new surgery at Fountain House which is on target to be completed in Novem-ber. The Patient Participation Group are currently preparing for the installation of a free phone taxi service using a local reliable company. If you are a local parish resident, get involved through our website or Facebook page and send us your comments and suggestions.

Salisbury Medical Practice has decided on a new logo for the surgery to include Bish-opdown Surgery staff, the image and colours will be reflected in staff uniforms, badges and seating within the building. Look out for the logo going live in surgery, on our website, and on paper.

Scooby’s, Edible Hedges and Shaun Pens No it’s not a local restaurant opened by a Hollywood actor but some of the many new ideas for our Country Park.

The controversial Hampton Park II housing development generated a wealth of criticism from local residents. The proposed country park on land adjacent to the development has also been viewed with suspicion, not least when the approved design was unveiled with urban design el-ements purporting to be in keeping with the rural surroundings. Cur-rently the proposed country park comes with a hefty price tag to build, features only some of the elements that the original community consulta-tion found to be important to users and is high maintenance with a tiny maintenance budget from the developer this new proposal commissioned by the Parish Council aims to change that.

Your views as local residents are wanted NOW to plan a country park which meets the needs of all users of the park. The park will also meet the strict ecological requirements laid down by the planning authority and will be easily maintained as a rural country park. Environment Partners who have been commissioned to work with residents to achieve this aim hope to re-design the park in a way that will achieve a Green Flag Award by year two of the park’s creation.

VIEW DESIGNS HERE: http://www.environmentpartners.co.uk/

There are links to the web site from the Laverstock and Ford Parish Council, Bishopdown Farm Residents Association and River Bourne Community Farm web sites. You can view and comment on the re-design of the site as it evolves over the next few weeks. The finished design will be submitted to the developer and the planning authority to replace the existing plan.

Design elements in the Environment Partners first draft proposal include dedicated play areas for dogs themed as “Scooby’s”, grassy banks mod-elled on ancient earthworks and an easy to maintain edible hedge along the site boundaries for visitors to snack on. Environment Partners have already received some very encouraging comments from local people who are applauding the approach to the park design which aims to enhance the high value natural landscapes and character of the land whilst also providing for the needs of all park visitors.

Environment Partners CIC is a new organisation formed by local land management experts David Burton, Jason Lovering and Jaymie Hall together with Karen Crawford, an accountant who specialises in green economics for community and environmental enterprises.

Laverstock Village Hall

Resident Gill Kay recently came across a couple of St Andrews’ parish magazines dating from the 1960s. In 1964, fundraising was in action to replace the older Hill Hall which was donated to the parish by Major Byles. ‘Brick-a-week’ donations were made by residents (a fund-raising method also used to help finance the building of the vicarage) along with the ubiquitous whist drives. By September 1964 the fund stood at £2,015/1/1d.

A later magazine, May 1966, proudly announces that the contract for the new hall had been placed with REEMA Construction Ltd of Milford at a cost of £8,510. Work started soon after and the hall was completed by the end of the year. Fund-raising continued to meet the costs of fitting out the hall with a cooker, chairs, curtains etc.

The hall, now almost 50 years old, is managed by a management commit-tee of residents and users. It has been kept up to date with a state-of-the-art kitchen being installed a few years ago and is self-funding from hiring fees. It plays host to numerous local groups, the W.I., cubs and scouts, toddler groups, gardening club, fitness classes, and many more. A full list of activities and who to contact to book the hall for private functions can be found on page 62.

Local residents, who remember making their donations in the 1960s and those volunteers who have been responsible for overseeing it’s upkeep in the years since should feel proud that the hall continues to be a major asset to the village and the wider community.

St Andrews Toddler Group It’s been a long time since I was at Nursery group or pre-school as it was

called. I have an over-riding memory of riding round and around in circles

in and out of shafts of sunlight with my friends on trikes and bicycles,

laughing and laughing. When I was invited to attend a morning with St

Andrews Toddler group I was reminded of that happy memory. Every

Thursday morning at 10am, the Laverstock and Ford Village Hall is

awash with voices; from the babbling of content babies, and incessant

yammering of toddlers, to happily chatting parents and grandparents,

there are all sorts.

Stand outside the door and there is a comforting buzz of happy noise.

Inside, all is well at St Andrews Toddler group, as the children play and

their adults get a chance to relax and talk to other parents or child mind-

ers who have turned up.

There is everything a toddler could want and to much to my delight that

includes tricycles; soft play, toys, books, indoor miniature slides, arts and

crafts, even a set of raised beds for growing vegetables. The ‘piece de

resistance’ for St Andrews Toddler group is ‘snack time’ with juice and

fruit for the little ones, there is also coffees and teas provided by a

different Mothers Union volunteer each week and here the happy noise

settles into a contented background hum.

Running from 10am to 11.20 each Thursday, St Andrews Toddler Group

charges a small fee of £1.50 per week for up to two children, and 50p per

additional child and always ends their sessions with tidy up time and then

songs and news.

Toddler group will be closed during the summer holidays,

but there are spaces available for September.

Nothing boring about this Walk!

On Thursday 16th May, the Chairman of the Parish Council, Mr Ron Champion

officially ‘opened’ the newly installed Interpretation Boards and Ceramic logs at

the Whitebridge Boardwalk. The boardwalk is on the route of the Farm & Spin-

ney Trail and it has been the desire to install interpretation boards for some

time in order to give visitors more information about this special wildlife area.

The appeal for help from a Graphic Designer in the pages of the Newsletter

brought forward Mr David Liversage, a local resident who also teaches at Lee-

hurst Swan School. His pupils soon produced designs for the boards and the

project expanded with the production of ceramic plates featuring the flora and

fauna to be found there. Jason Turner, the PC arboriculturalist, was able to

mount the plates on logs and install them in the ground as shown in the pics.

The pupils were very excited to look for their own plates which number over 30

and are featured all along the boardwalk and river from the white bridge all the

way to Riverbourne Rd. After the ‘official opening’ all present returned to the

Community Farm for tea and cakes. It was hoped originally to also be able to

officially open the new pond and boardwalk spur at the same time but the poor

weather earlier in the year

has delayed their completion.

This should take place at the

end of May, beginning of

June.

Do visit the boardwalk area

for a delightful walk; what

someone has described as

Salisbury’s best kept secret!

May Local Elections

Parish Councillors were elected unopposed at the recent local elec-tions, Laverstock and Ford have 13 positions available and only 12 stood for election. We still need a Councillor to represent Old Sarum and anyone interested should contact the Parish Clerk (see contacts page 58)

It is pleasing to note that the Parish Council is politically impartial unlike Salisbury City Council which is elected on party political lines. This means that nothing stands in the way of your PC making decisions in resident’s interests. Councillors do not draw any allowances and very little is paid in expenses. There is no personal gain but many hours committed to the job, something that the general public are not always aware of.

During the coming years there are many important decisions that your Councillors will be considering such as:-

The Country Park at Hampton Park

Longhedge

Airfield

Old Sarum

These are a few amongst many others to make over the coming years. It is a responsibility that the PC has to balance in making decisions in the interests of all in the Parish.

The public are welcome to all of our PC meetings which take place on the third Monday of each month starting at 7.00pm. Details of the ven-ue are published in the Parish Magazine.

Elections

The Wiltshire Council and Parish Council elections took place on 2nd May. Our existing Wiltshire Councillors were re-elected with increased majori-ties and all those who stood for the Laverstock & Ford Parish Council were elected unopposed. In fact, a vacancy still exists for one parish councillor - ideally from Old Sarum. If you can commit some time and are keen to see the parish progress, please contact the Parish Clerk. At the Annual Parish meet-ing, Ron Champion was re-elected Chairman and Virginia McLennan resum-ing her Vice Chairman's role. All councillors contact details have been updat-ed.

Best Kept Village

In spite of a smaller turnout this year, those welcome volunteers who came along for the Laverstock Village Clean Up on 11th May did a great job. A good number of bags of rubbish, plus a bike, were removed from Laverstock in preparation for the judging of the Best Kept Village Competition. Once again, our thanks go to the Scouts and Beavers (and their lead-ers) for their valued contribution in the clean up. The event finished with a very welcome BBQ at the Community Farm.

We never know the date of judging for the BKV which takes place sometime during the ‘summer’ so we can all help by ensuring that any litter we see gets quickly binned. Together we CAN make a difference. Thank you.

Royal Award for Community Farm

A testament to all the people involved at the farm and their hard work, as the farm was awarded overall winner of the Duchy of Cornwall – “The Prince of Wales Award for 2013”.

This Award is open to community organisations, schools, colleges and groups which have, through their own initiative, brought about improve-ments to the lives of the rural population in a sustainable manner. The Award is intended to embrace a wide range of schemes where there has been a genuine attempt to move forward in a resourceful and inventive way to the benefit of a rural Community.

The farm was shortlisted following a visit by three judges representing the Royal Bath & West of England Society and the Duchy of Cornwall, whose job it was to decide which organisation has made the most outstanding contribution to improving the lives of their community.

The presentation was made by the Bishop of Bath & Wells at the Royal Bath & West of England Society show. Ben Parker, chairman of River Bourne Community Farm, was presented with the Award Certificate, signed by HRH Prince Charles, an engraved glass bowl and a cheque for £1,000 to be used for the furtherance of the farm’s activities.

The certificate reads:

The Prince of Wales Award of Honour

Presented to: River Bourne Community Farm

A community farm providing a focus for the

surrounding community, an educational

and skills centre for local school children,

community groups and BTEC courses and

a resource for help for Heroes.

Congratulations! To Scout Leader David Waspe who is now District Commissioner for Salisbury and South Wiltshire Scouts. Welcome to scout leader Alistair Riggs for

Laverstock Scouts . Old Sarum now have three new Scout Groups who meet at Old Sarum Primary School and spaces are available! Old Sarum Beaver Scouts Louise Thompson 01722 329145

Old Sarum Cub Scouts Lindsay Killackey 01722 417434

Old Sarum Scouts Neil Fotheringham 01722 329415 Metal theft and burglary are still active in the parish, do make sure your sheds and outbuildings are secure.

NOT SURE? DON’T OPEN THE DOOR! If you're not sure who is at your door, don't open it. Check the identity of the call-er by calling the company they are purporting to be from i.e. gas, electricity, wa-ter, police. Use the telephone numbers listed in your local directory or provided independently by your service provider – Do not use any telephone numbers provided by the caller – they may be bogus.

Telephone a neighbour or friend nearby to come along and check out the caller before you open the door to them. Some areas in the country have “nominated neighbour schemes” you can sign up to. Check with your local police to find out if there is one in your area.

Many service providers provide password schemes, sign up to these. When unannounced callers knock at your door they should know the password if they are genuine.

The “Waterboard” no longer exists, it is an obsolete phrase used only by bogus callers.

Don't keep large quantities of cash at home; put it in the bank where it is safe.

Keep doors locked and windows secure at all times.

Ensure that if you do let somebody in to your home, that you close the door be-hind them – distraction burglars often work in teams, where one will distract you whilst others sneak in through the insecure door.

If somebody asks for your help – needs to make a telephone call, lost a ball in your garden, needs a drink or pen and paper for example, refer them to a young-er neighbour or assist them through a closed door. Alternatively, call a friend or neighbour to come and assist.

Open Farm Sunday 2013 an unqualified success

The Community Farm Open Day attracted

around 3,000 visitors with over 55 attractions ap-

pealing to all age groups. The farm’s famous

cream teas were, as usual, provided by Laver-

stock & District Evening W.I. and were extremely popular and live music

performances ensured hungry visitors had plenty of music to eat by.

Punch & Judy pulled in the crowds at each performance as did the ferret

races. Local dog owners got to put their pets through their paces on the

dog obstacle course and draw plenty of ‘oohs and aahs’ along the way.

The farm volunteers worked tirelessly through the day, ensuring that a

good time was had by all. The weather helped, a bright sunny day with a

slight wind. The farm is community-based and it was good to see the lo-

cal community supporting this event in such large numbers.

The Open Day is the farm’s major fund-raiser to help with the costs of ani-

mal feed and bedding, repairs and maintenance plus future additions to

the farm.

See over the page for more pictures of happy people

on the day.
