DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT
SWEET VIRGINIA is a film about morally ambiguous people confronting life, love and death.
It’s about resilience; about people who are struggling to escape their past. Having grown up in a
small community in northern Canada, I’ve witnessed firsthand the frustration that people endure
when they feel like they’ve been left behind. Many of the characters in Sweet Virginia mirror
people I know from my hometown. In fact, it’s my intimate familiarity with these characters that
drew me to the China Brother’s script in the first place.
I’m fascinated with how the lack of anonymity in small communities changes the dynamics in
how people relate to one another, where everyone is incestuously interwoven into the very fabric
of the community, and keeping secrets is difficult. These are communities where the
ramifications of misdeeds are dramatically amplified, often rippling across the entire population.
Originally set in Virginia in the late 1970s, I changed the location to a fictional town in
Southeast Alaska. Famous for attracting drifters, misfits and loners, Alaska is a place people flee
to reinvent themselves. These are people who don’t feel intimidated by their smallness in a vast
land. I’ve visited Alaska a number of times over the years. I’ve always been impressed with the
fortitude and strength of character that people are endowed with who live on the frontier of
civilization. Not often portrayed on film, I felt Alaska was a rich environment, better suited to the
characters and the world of Sweet Virginia.

Joan’s own struggle is one of learning to forgive the most heinous of crimes, discovering that
only in selflessness can there be peace.
