Receptionists cannot create appoint- ments or reduce waiting times. Dispensers require 2 full working days for all medication requests and shouting at them will not reduce that time. Patient Participation Group (PPG) The PPG met at the Surgery on 18th July to review the successful ‘Spring into Health’ event that was held on 22nd May.

Twenty Four organisations attended the event to present their services. Their preparation had been excellent and there was a huge amount of information on display. The event raised the overall profile of Malpas as a place where services are required.

The Practice Nurses provided information on Healthy Living, cooking and eating and were well-supported by the local Diabetes Group (see page 6 for details).

Concerns regarding the difficulty of navigating the room were discussed. It was agreed to focus the next event on prevention rather than cure and to hand out a floor plan of all the stalls to attendees.

As a result of the ‘Spring into Health’ day, it is very pleasing to report:

Local interest in setting up and helping with a Voluntary Car Scheme which will be pursued by the PPG.

Interest in setting up a Walking Group in Malpas. This requires at least 3 trained Walk Leaders, training costs are £250 per person and it is hoped to

obtain financial support to allow this to happen.

A Toe-Nail Cutting Service will be provided at the Practice on a 6 weekly basis. This is an NHS service with a charge of £10 per visit.

We hope to provide the Diabetes Essentials Course in Malpas: this course offers information on correct diet and exercise and how to stay healthy with Diabetes.

The PPG are very keen to organise a second ‘Spring into Health’ event and this is planned for a Saturday morning in April 2014 to allow local families and people who work to attend.

SURVEY RESULTS: Practice Staff carried out a survey of attendees during the afternoon. We had 84 completed questionnaires and the response was very positive. The results are as follows:

NEW FLU PROGRAMME FOR CHILDREN: Children aged 2 & 3 years (born 02.09.09 to 01.09.11) will be

offered a flu nasal vaccination as part of a Public Health Programme. This aims to reduce the impact of Flu by limiting the number of cases in

children, so reducing the incidence of Flu across the population generally. Children in the At Risk group will require 2 vaccines 4 weeks apart.

Vaccination Update

SHINGLES: A new Shingles vaccination programme began on 1st September 2013. The aim of the programme is to offer the Shingles vaccine to all those aged 70 years (born between 02.09.1933 & 01.09.1934) and, as part of a catch up programme, patients aged 79 years (born between 02.09.1942 & 01.09.1934).

Patients can arrange to have the vaccine with our Practice Nurses. Shingles can occur at any age, with the highest inci-dence seen in older people: over 50,000 cases of Shingles occur in older people aged 70 years and above annually. The incidence of Shingles increases with age and around one in four adults will experi-ence Shingles in their lifetime.

An increasing incidence of Shingles with age is thought to be associated with waning immunity. The severity of Shingles generally increases with age and can lead to Post Herpetic Neuralgia that can require hospitalisation. If you fit the age range criteria, your doctor recommends that you have this vaccine to receive the best possible health care.

CHANGES TO ADOLESCENT & CHILDHOOD VACCINATION PROGRAMMES: From June 2013, the Meningitis

C vaccine was removed from the programme at 16 weeks.

From July 2013, the Rotavirus vaccine was introduced into the programme (2 doses for babies are given at 8 and 12 weeks).

From Sept 2013, Meningitis C vaccine adolescent dose will be introduced through the schools

vaccination programme at around 14 years (school year 10) for the academic year 2013/14 together with the booster Tetanus, Diphtheria and Polio vaccine.

Young people going to University for the first time, who have not had a dose of Meningitis C over the age of 10, can be vaccinated (ideally no later than 2 weeks before going to university or as soon as possible once they arrive).

There is an on-going programme offering the MMR (Measles, Mumps & Rubella) vaccine to all children over the age of 5 who have not received a full course of 2 MMR vaccines in their childhood vaccination schedule.

Children who received the single vaccines are advised to take advice from our Practice Nurse.

ADULT FLU & PNEUMONIA: Flu vaccines will be available from 7th October so please call from mid September to make an appointment in one of our Flu clinics. The Pneumonia vaccine can be offered at the same time to all having the Flu vaccine. Please note that you only need one Pneumonia vaccination in your lifetime unless you have had your spleen removed.

The District Nurses will continue to visit patients who are not able to attend the surgery for an appointment. These vaccines are recom-mended for all people aged 65 years and over AND those who are considered to be At Risk, i.e. those with chronic respira-tory disease, asthma, heart dis-ease, diabetes, serious kidney or liver disease, on repeat steroid medication or lowered immu-nity due to disease or treatment.

Flu vaccines are also recommended for pregnant ladies and main carers who may be at risk if the person they care for falls ill.

~ ~ ~ ~ Please note: Flu Clinics are specific clinics. If you have any other medical query, please make another appointment with the Nurse or Doctor.

We still have a few patents who insist on having their medications in a branded form rather than the generic form that the Practice dispenses. The additional cost to do this amounts to approximately £6,500 per year. We thought you may be interested to know what this ‘extra’ £6,500 could be used by the NHS each year for :

1 District Nurse for 7½ weeks 216 X-rays 62 A&E attendances 42 Out-patient

appointments 41 MRI scans

We could go on but the economic comparison is obvious. Generic medications are clinically identical to their branded equivalents but cost a lot less. We are all aware that these are ‘tight’ economic times. The NHS must make economies where it can (just like everyone else) but without affecting patient care. This is an area where we can make savings without any detriment to patient care and every penny we save can then be used more effectively and efficiently for the benefit of everyone’s health care. Please do give this some consideration when you next order your prescriptions.

One of the many things that I have come to love about living and working in Malpas is how friendly and supportive we are as a commu-nity. I am increasingly aware of how neighbour helps neighbour, be it with shopping and transport to passing on concerns regarding health and welfare of those in need.

Through various mechanisms we are now living longer, albeit with more complex and chronic medical problems. We are also seeing a slow but sure rise in the number of people living with dementia AND an increase in the numbers of those caring for people with dementia.

How can we, as a community, support those with dementia, to enable them to stay in their own

homes and safely venture out into our village? What needs to be done to make Malpas a Dementia-Friendly village?

Crossroads, Malpas Parish Council, WCCCG and other agencies have selected Malpas to work towards becoming a Dementia-Friendly Village.

In the next few weeks and months, I look forward to being part of a working group in which we hope to address these issues and help to create a safe and nurturing environment for those with dementia and somewhere that carers of those with the condition will also feel supported.

Care.Data: Information Sharing to Improve Services

APPRENTICESHIP IN MEDICAL ADMINISTRATION:

Sarah Maginess joined the practice in November 2011 as our first Apprentice in a scheme which enabled her to study for the Level 2 Apprenticeship in Medical Administration.

We are very pleased to announce that Sarah has achieved her City and Guilds qualification at Level 2 in Business & Administration. She received a merit in her Admin Skills Assignment, a distinc-tion in Communication Skills and distinctions in her exams for Medical Principles and Medical Terminology.

Sarah has become a very experienced and useful member of our Reception and Admin Team. Well done Sarah, all your hard work has paid off!

STAFF NEWS QUEEN'S NURSE AWARD:

We are very pleased to announce that our District Nurse, Sister Emma Lea, who works here at the surgery, has been chosen to receive the prestigious Queen's Nurse Award.

Queen’s Nurses have become well-known and well-respected for their contributions to nursing on a local and a national scale. The title of Queen’s Nurse indicates a commitment to the

values of community nursing, to excel-lent patient care and to a continuous process of learning and leadership.

Kate Billingham CBE and Crystal Oldman (Chair of the QNI’s Council and Chief Executive) hosted the QNI Awards Ceremony in April 2013. Emma attended the event at the Millennium Hotel Mayfair in London with her husband and colleagues. She was presented with her award by Chief Nursing Officer for England, Jane Cummings, who praised all the nurses present for their skill and care and the impact this has on the lives of patients.

We are extremely proud of Emma’s achievement. Her commitment to providing an excellent community nursing service to patients who need nursing care in their home contributes on a daily basis to the well being of our patients.

We wish to formally say “Thank you Emma and very well done”.

NHS England is linking information from all the different places where patients receive care (such as the GP, hospital and commu-nity service) to help provide a full picture. Known as Care.Data, this will allow compari-son of the care patients receive in one area against the care received in another, to see what has worked best. It is important that the NHS can use this information to plan and improve services for all patients. Information will be used to link patient records in a secure system called the Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC). How patient information is used and shared is controlled by law and strict rules are in place to protect privacy. Sharing information can help improve understanding (locally and nationally) of the most important health needs and the quality of the treatment and care provided by local health services. Anonymised data will help research by supporting studies that identify patterns in diseases, responses to different treatments and potential solutions. Only the minimum amount of information will be used to help improve patient care and services provided.

The Practice cannot opt out of Care.Data extractions. The HSCIC has the power to require the information and GPs are legally obliged to comply with that require-ment. NHS England are committed to making sure that the way information will be used is in line with the law, national guidance and best practice. Published reports will never identify a particular person. The extraction of Care.Data will start towards the end of October. Initially, the data will cover the period from April 2013 onwards and will then be extracted monthly. Patients cannot object to their anonymised data being shared. However, patients do have a right to prevent their confidential information being shared or used for any purpose except in special circumstances where necessary by law (for example, if there is a public health emergency). If you are happy for your personal confidential information to be shared, you do not need to do anything. If you decide that you do not want your

personal confidential information shared outside the Practice with the HSCIC, please let the Practice know. You can also restrict the sharing of your personal confidential data from the HSCIC with other healthcare settings (such as hospitals, community services and for research purposes) by informing us at the Practice. You can OPT IN to either service at a later data by informing us that you wish to do so. For more information, including a list of frequently asked questions (FAQs), please go to the website at www.nhs.uk/caredata or www.hscic.gov.uk. You can also pick up a patient Information leaflet at the Practice or find it at http://www.nhs.uk/NHSEngland/thenhs/records/healthrecords/Documents/nhs-england-care-data-paient-leaflet.PDF . Please note: We have taken a decision in Practice that those patients who have Opted Out of either the National Summary Care Record or the Cheshire Local Care Record will also wish to opt out of Care. Data. Please let us know if you have currently opted out, and now wish to opt back in - Thank you.

Smoking is still the largest avoidable cause of premature death and disability in the UK, where there are still around 10 million smokers, of whom half will die prematurely as a result of their smoking unless they quit. In our Stop Smoking Service we aim to provide easily accessible 1 to 1 smoking cessation support from our Practice Nurses who are accredited Stop Smoking Advisors. Patients can either be referred by their Doctor or Nurse to the service or can self-refer by making an appointment with one of our Nurses. Our Nurses can: assess nicotine dependence,

motivation and readiness to quit

deliver a treatment programme with appropriate support strategies to help motivation

describe stop smoking interventions and treatments suitable for patients’ needs

explain stop smoking medications and lessen any fears about stop smoking medication

use a carbon monoxide monitor as a tool for patients (to understand the importance of assess-ing their smoking status)

deal with withdrawal symptoms, relapse and staying with the treatment.

If you wish to Stop Smoking, please call to make an appointment with one of our Practice Nurses. If you can’t find the time to attend an appointment at the Practice, you can ring the Stop Smoking Service on Freephone 0800 043 5134 who will direct you to a more convenient clinic.
