Originally from Ohio, I moved to South Carolina to pursue a Masters degree in Architecture, a year after graduating from Kent State University with a B.A. in Interior Design. I have experience in architectural and interior design, concept development, construction document production, field verifying existing conditions, facilities management, perspective drawing and working in teams. Through 7 years of learning and practicing design, I can confidently say my favorite part of the entire process is space planning, it is my niche and the basis of who I am as a designer. My other general design interests include sports architecture, projects of public health, schools, single-family and multi-familiy residences and biomimicry. Recently I have been a part of the 2015 Clemson University Solar Decathlon Team, two intramural soccer teams, a research project on sustainable farming methods and Salon des Ambler, an in-house art show out of Ambler, PA. In my three years studying at Clemson University, I have come to the conclusion that I want to change the world through design.

GroupWhile studing abroad in Florence, Italy, the studio project consisted of redesigning Piazza dei Ciompi, a flea market that originally was a fish market. As a group, Katie Hanzel, Whitney Valerio and myself designed the market to be more open and community friendly. Inspired by the Spanish Steps, Ara Pascis Museum and the acanthus leaf, we created a market that had dual occupiable surfaces. The floor leading to the market stalls sloped down to be accessible by all. Pedestrian stone steps surround the back of each stall and emerge from the street level, while also meeting the tops of the market stalls. The dual surfaces combine to form an urban park that was just a flea market previously.

IndividualAfter designing the market, each group member designed a particular stall and decide what will be sold in it. Milk glass is of the World War II era. After deciding to sell milk glass, I formed the concept of the design around the deceit and interrelations of World War II along with my own experiences during my travels in Italy. One of the symbols I encountered was the “mask.” A mask portrays two identies, the real and the fake. Milk glass illustrates this same idea as even though it is glass, it is not transparent. The market stall is designed to showcase two “identies.” Not only are there two colors, but also the display of the merchandise is on one side, while the auxillary services are on the other side of the stall.

Pavilion design for a public square in AtlantaOver the years, Margaret Mitchell Square has become a resting spot and social area for homeless people in Atlanta, GA. The square is in the business district which often times causes a clash between the business workers and the homeless. This project’s intent was to redesign the square to soften the divide between the two different classes and make the surrounding environment feel more safe. To force interaction of people around the square, I created a hardscape that made it easier to cross the square than walk around it on sidewalk. I essentially merged the square and the sidewalk by adding various level path routes and steps for sitting. This strategy was based on circulation forces observed on site prior to design. The strategy I used to design the pavilion was to create an art installation, rather than a pavilion. My approach was to utilize the folding design technique to create an art piece that had balance and harmony of shelter and entrigue to bring awareness to the square, while still providing the people who use the space shelter from the elements.

Commotion: Group Ticket Sales This space is to serve two purposes: one is to sell tickets to large groups. The other is to display art created by local Atlanta artists. For this design, site forces from the day of the site visit were applied directly to the piece of the courtyard given to us to build upon, essentially a box. The “box” was truncated by rain, pedestrian circulation and wind caused by cars on Peachtree Street; all three of these caused commotion the day of the site visit. With strategically placed glazing elements, the sun is able to daylight the space without possibly damaging any art that would be on display.

A Third Place for Beer EnthusiastsOak Wood Brewery is for the beer drinkers of Greenville, SC. It is a “neighbeerhood.” A third place is where everyone knows your name, you are comfortable, but it is the place you go after you have been at work and after you have been home; it is literally the third place of your life. Specifically for beer enthusiasts, it houses the brewery with a recipe of the old fashioned cask ale, which is stored in oak wood barrels. Based on the beer brewing process, all the spaces are efficiently planned to mimic the concept of a factory. The long collonade/gallery that divides the complex is intended to connect the residential neighborhood on the back of the site with the commericial network in the front of the site. Combining these two aspects of the area will enhance the environment and create a new neighborhood centered around the love of being with one another and enjoying each others company.
