Old CE Building 106 The objective of this course is to provide a basis for understanding historical processes (both global and local) which have shaped the Middle East and North Africa in the modern period (18 th -20 th century) Focusing on the transformation of state and society under the impact of a changing world economy and European imperialism, this course has three interrelated themes: The transformation of multiethnic world empires to nation-states in the 20 th century The changing relationship of the Middle East to Europe and later, the United States.

To demonstrate that they have met the Area E learning outcome, students will be able to describe thetransformationoftheregionfromOttomanruletomodernnation-statesinthe20thcentury, compare how different Middle Eastern countries reacted to the forces of reform, imperialism and nationalism in the late 19th and early 20th century, analyze how the interplay between global, regional and local forces shaped different social and political movements in the region over time. • Students will compare and contrast various types of foreign intervention in the region and reactions to that intervention

• Students will identify how socio-cultural and economic forces shaped the emergence of social and political movements in the Middle East

• Students will analyze how different Middle Eastern countries reacted to the forces of reform, imperialism and nationalism in the late 19th and early 20th century

• Students will evaluate how the patterns of formation of nation-states in the 20th century shapes conflicts in the 21st
