Natural Partnership
American Academy of Pediatrics Membership organization (60,000 primary care
pediatricians, pediatric medical subspecialists, pediatric surgical specialists)
Disaster Preparedness Advisory Council and initiatives
Ties to community pediatricians and disaster experts
University of Illinois at Chicago, Library of the
Health Sciences (LHS) UIC LHS Mission to support learning, discovery,
community engagement, and clinical services in six professional schools
As RML for the Greater Midwest Region (GMR) of the NN/LM, LHS promotes access to information by health professionals and health consumers; also creating ties to health science librarians with disaster-related experience

Purpose The purpose of the project is to encourage
community pediatricians, public librarians, and health science librarians to partner and improve preparedness and response efforts for children.
Objectives:Identify and disseminate collaborative strategiesPromote cross-training and mutual awareness of disaster roles and health information needsEnhance availability of and access to disaster health-related documents

Collaborative Strategies Respond to health questions from consumers Develop a funding proposal for community
project Pediatricians could educate librarians on health
topics Librarians could educate pediatricians about
information dissemination strategies or types of health inquiries
Focus on community response strategies for select disasters (flood recovery, infectious disease outbreak, tornado/storms)
Librarian/pediatrician partners could discuss where they seek disaster-related information and/or how to create an information portal (or Web page)
Partner to use social media for information sharing
Position library facility as a haven/resource during a disaster

Opportunities, Challenges, Lessons Learned
Project Advisory Committee Critical asset Brought life to project outcomes Thoughtfully considered all approaches, took project in
interesting direction, not necessarily what was planned Fruitful partnership at all levels
Different way of thinking DISASTER-OUTREACH-LIB and NLM interactions very
helpful/informative More staff time required up front for a new
project Staff should prepare draft materials Communicate strategically with Project Advisory
Committee Plan for IRB review and approval early on
![Page 10: Laura Aird, MS Manager, Disaster Preparedness and Response American Academy of Pediatrics Disaster Outreach and Collaboration for Kids Project September.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062304/56649d975503460f94a80be2/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Opportunities, Challenges, Lessons Learned, Con’t
Project Scope Organizational processes differ (mandatory funding and
research processes in university) Increased project complexity and time requirements IRB review and approval in two organizations
Literature Review Did not yield reports of pediatrician/librarian
collaboration Added to challenge of constructing the questionnaire
Next Steps Complete the IRB reviews Administer the survey, analyze the results Seek funding to implement knowledge gained in survey
