1. Course Description

This studio further elaborates the process of theoretical investigation of space, with the emphasis on the communication of ideas through different representational models and tools. Students at this stage will continue the study of small to medium scale projects with emphasis on basic principles of spatial design. References and case studies of canonical works in modern design may serve as theoretical background in the continuing development of a theoretical foundation. The elaboration of a complete set of architectural drawings for the final interior design project (plans/sections/elevations) in addition to models will be expected at this stage.

2. Course Objectives

To develop the students’ ability to translate ideas into forms by working on projects of small to medium scale that develop their perceptual and theoretical approach to form making To develop the students analytical and synthetic skills through drawing and model-making as means of visualization, experimentation and formalization To develop the students’ understanding of scale, proportion, rhythm and their application in the development of spatial forms To develop the students’ understanding of spatial relations, specifically the relationship between exterior form and interior space as a basis for the development of a coherent project To develop the students’ cultural knowledge of architectural precedents and the interrelation between practical design on the one hand, and its historical and theoretical dimensions on the other hand

3. Studio Project[s] Outline

The Beirut Pavilion Tourism to Beirut is booming once again and the city is receiving visitors from all over the world year round. Curiously, the municipality does not offer a tourist information center other than at Beirut Airport or on the web. In this design studio we propose a contemporary tourist information center in the heart of Beirut for visitors and Beiruti’s alike. The Beirut Pavilion is to be a point of convergence for people who wish to inform themselves about the city and it’s various activities: a small but ‘active’ information center with diverse functions such as visitor information, exhibition, ticket sales, conferences and café. The studio is organized around a series of short design exercises that will focus on various theoretical, technical and graphic tools to be used during the project interior design.

4. Required tools / skills

A sketchbook. Curiosity. Observation. Intensive individual and group work.

The Beirut Pavilion_fist assignment

Project 02_programme analysis

01_ The Entrance and Reception

You are being asked to design the entrance/reception of the Beirut Pavilion. You will find the necessary information about the Beirut Pavilion in the couse syllabus. At this preleminary stage you should think about the characteristics of an reception hall, what it should incorporate and what service it must deliver to the visitor. You are furthermore being asked to design a space without a space, an idea of a space. In order not to limit yourself, you are invited to define the boundaries of your own space according to your design. You take as much space as you need and as little space as necessary.

While designing, please ask yourself at least some of the following questions:

- How visible is the reception from the street? How does one locate the entrance?- What is the vistor’s first impression?- How many people can be received at the same time?- Who does the recetion cater to and what are the different parts of it?- Is it an open or an enclosed space, high or low space?

In an album (min. A3) that you will buy especially for this design class, you will permanently collect and insert all drawings and sketches in a chronological order and bring this album to all individual consultations.

Please produce a plan, a section and paper model of the entry/reception space at 1:100. Insert the drawings in your album. Produce one person at the scale 1:100 and insert it into your model.

Due date is the 28.10.2010

Project 02_programme analysis

02_ The Entrance and Reception

Now that you have a first idea of what your entrance and reception could be like, produce an interior view as a „collage“ of that space. The collage should show the atmosphere, material and mood of your space. The collage will be in color and mounted on an A3 cardboard. Please make sure to produce a spezial (3D) representation of your space.

Due date: 02.11.2009

The collage consists of images taken mainly from American magazines. The principal template was an image of a modern sitting-room in an advertisement in Ladies Home Journal for Armstrong Floors, which describes the «modern fashion in floors». The title is also taken from copy in the advert, which states «Just what is it that makes today›s homes so different, so appealing? Open planning of course - and a bold use of color.» The body builder is Irwin ‹Zabo› Koszewski, winner of Mr L.A. in 1954. The photograph is taken from Tomorrow›s Man magazine, September 1954. The artist Jo Baer, who posed for erotic magazines in her youth, has stated that she is the burlesque woman on the sofa, but the magazine from which the picture is taken has not been identified. The staircase is taken from an advertisement for Hoover›s new model «Constellation»,and it was sourced from the same issue of Ladies Home Journal, June 1955, as the Armstrong Floors ad. The picture of the cover of Young Romance was from an advertisement for the magazine included in its sister-publication Young Love (no 1950 ,15). The TV is a Stromberg-Carlson, taken from a 1955 advert. Hamilton asserted that the rug was a blow-up from a photograph depicting a crowd on the Whitley Bay beach, but this cannot be confirmed. The image of planet Earth at the top was cut from Life Magazine (Sept 5[.(1955] The original reference image for the collage from Life Magazine supplied to Hamilton is in the John McHale archives at Yale University. It was one of the first images to be laid down in the collage.[5[ The Victorian man in the portrait has not been identified. The periodical on the chair is a copy of The Journal of Commerce, founded by telegraph pioneer Samuel F. B. Morse.[5] The tape recorder is of known make, but the source of the image has not been identified. The view through the window is a widely reproduced photograph of the exterior of a cinema in 1927 showing the premiere of the early «talkie» film, The Jazz Singer starring Al Jolson. Just what is it that makes today›s homes so different, so appealing? was created in 1956 for the catalogue of the This Is Tomorrow exhibition in London, England in which it was reproduced in black and white. In addition, the piece was used in posters for the exhibit. Richard Hamilton has subsequently created several works in which he reworked the subject and composition of the pop art collage, including a 1992 version featuring a female bodybuilder.

DES III- mid-term presentation requirements / fall 2010 professors Jean-Marc Abcarius and Christopher [email protected]

The mid term jury / presentation will take place at Sheik Zayed Hall, beginning at 12.00 PM on Thursday, the 2nd of December 2010. For those of you who don’t have courses at 12PM, please start pinning up your drawings at 11.30 AM latest. All other students must be at Sheik Zayed Hall at 2PM latest.

This presentation serves to clarify your ideas and define your concepts. Your concepts should not only reveal your very personal interpretation of the three functional components for the Beirut Pavilion, but also show the integration of the different program parts in a general project idea. Please present the following documents and models for the mid- term presentation:

1) Models of each space in scale 1:1003) All relevant plan levels at scale 1:100 4) All relevant sections at scale 1:1005) Optional: Relevant elevations at scale 1:100 (only if needed to explain the project) 7) three collages to convey the atmosphere and idea of the project8) a selection of sketches and models showing the evolution of your work

Check list for your work:

- dotted lines only for objects and building parts that are above the plan- thin continuous lines for projected objects , thick lines for cut building parts- consider line-weights in plans and sections- carefully consider the visual balance of your drawings. Keep them light and don’t fill them with unnecessary furniture, plants, and other CAD- library elements. - don’t forget section keys - all plans should be directed in the same direction and have the same paper format- sections and elevations need to sit on the ground (a line for the ground, side walk, street , neighboring building, etc- it’s always good to add a person in your drawings and models for scale information- please double check that your prints are OK and that none of your drawings are upside-down or mirrored, etc…- if you label your plans, then please use small font sizes in order not to “kill” your drawings- carefully consider your layout, avoid fancy shapes, fonts and colors. The layout should enhance your concept and not complement it (less is more…)

We wish you good luck and a successful mid - term presentation.
