U/15 GIRLS & BOYS
HAND BALL
Tournament hosted by
Laude
Congratulations to all our LAUDE
team players who participated in the
Inter Schools U/15 girl’s and boy’s
hand ball tournament this week. The
tournament was kindly hosted by
LAUDE and our boys and girls were
given the chance to compete and
show a good standard of skill and
sportsmanship. The boys’ matches
were spectacular to watch, all the
matches were very close indeed, they
managed to beat the 3 visiting schools
and took 1st
place. The girls showed
commitment to each other and
confidently demonstrated the
strategies and tactics which they had
been practicing in PE lessons; they
won all their matches except one and
took 2nd
place overall. The matches
played were very close indeed.
Playing in fixtures against other
schools always enables children to
experience team spirit and gain a
sense of achievement. These benefits
can be gained whether one wins or
loses. Go LAUDE.

WHAT A DRAG!
This week in Science, Year 9 students
have been exploring the effects of
‘drag force’ on falling objects. Armed
with only some plasticine and
wallpaper paste, our students timed
how long different shapes took to fall
through the slimy, transparent
mixture. Overall, the class concluded
that pointed objects, with a small
surface area, fell the fastest – even
though they were all a similar mass.
This proves that there was less drag
force acting on them.
In conclusion, if we can reduce the
drag force on an object it will increase
the speed at which it falls. This is why
birds of prey make themselves a
streamline as possible when diving
down to catch their next meal.

ATRIUM GALLERY´S
FINEST ARTISTS VISIT
LAUDE
Year 2 were delighted to take part in
a workshop by professional artist, Sol
Felpeto; who inspired us by showing
some of her amazing artwork that
has been exhibited in various
galleries in Madrid, Barcelona and
Marbella.
Sol currently works with ATRIUM
Gallery in Marbella
(https://atriumgallerymarbella.com/
We created a mural, influenced by the
work of Pablo Picasso, who we are
studying as part of our ´Famous
People´ topic in IPC. Sol demonstrated
some different painting techniques,
which we later put into practice
ourselves. Our artwork will shortly be
exhibited in the reception area. We
really enjoyed the workshop, and
becoming artists for the day!

KS 2 INTER HOUSE
CATCH BALL
TOURNAMENT
The KS2 Inter House Catch ball
Tournament got off to a great start
on Friday afternoon. All the students
arrived promptly and were eager to
get the competition going. It was
fantastic to see over 250 students
enjoy themselves whilst
demonstrating good skills, and at the
same time showing great team work
and effort. There was great
excitement all afternoon, the children
played brilliantly and supported their
house teams with enthusiasm and joy.
Congratulations to all the students
and teachers who participated in a
very successful Inter-House Catch Ball
tournament. Well done to FIRE House
who put up a great fight to be
crowned Inter-House Catch Ball

GYMNASTICS…FANTASTIC!
All our young Year 1 gymnasts spent
the last few weeks prior to the Inter
House Gymnastics learning,
practising and perfecting their
routines. The children performed
brilliantly showing steady balances,
beautiful rolls and super jumps. It was
wonderful to see all the children
having such fun whilst jumping on the
trampoline and onto huge mats.
Congratulations to Earth, Air, Water
and Fire, everyone was a winner. Go
Laude.

LA CÚPULA MÁGICA
Last week more than two hundred of
our students, between Year 5 and
Year 8 / Primero de ESO, had the
opportunity to participate in a very
original educational activity.
The school management team
appreciated from the beginning the
quality of the project and the benefit
it could bring to our students, and did
not hesitate to invest in the
contracting of the educational
company: "La Cúpula Mágica".
La Cúpula Mágica is a project of a
company from Malaga that aims to
make the students of the province
know the Universe in a different way,
apart from textbooks and
conferences: it is a mobile educational
cinema with projections of 180 Or 360
degrees, with 3D images and an
audio-visual equipment worthy of the
best films.
The students entered a five meter
dome and were completely
surrounded by the screen where were
projected different contents referring
to our planet, the rest of the Solar
System and the outer Universe. They
learned to recognize different
elements in space, such as the main
constellations and some planets. They
saw with their own eyes the surface
of the Sun, travelled on comets and
flew through the rings of Saturn: they
could experience the sensation of
traveling through the Solar System
and even managed to get around
some other asteroid that passed over
their heads.

THE ART OF PERSUASION
Inspired by current events in international politics and the recent launch of Laude´s Debate Club, our Year 10 English students have been perfecting their persuasive writing and speaking skills.
Students rose to the challenge and created engaging and effective speeches to convince their classmates why they were the ideal candidates for several powerful roles. Speeches were performed, votes were taken and the winning student from a competitive final five was Aida Benet. Congratulations to our Year 10s and keep an eye on our up-and-coming politicians in the next few years! Ms A. Moody - English Department
MISSION TO MARS
The goal of NASA’s Phoenix Mars Mission was to determine whether the Martian surface was capable of supporting life. The Phoenix lander's job was to dig into the Martian permafrost using a robotic arm and analyze the composition of the soil and ice it removed with some of the most sophisticated and advanced technology ever sent to Mars.
Year 5LG had great fun in Project this week, following detailed instructions and constructing our own balloon-powered Phoenix Mars landers. Later, we put our engineering skills to the test, seeing whose space craft could make a powered descent all the way to the designated landing zone and land upright on its landing gear. Please take a look at the photos. Mr. R. Lang-Gordon – Year 5 teacher
THE WEATHER IN FS2
Our topic this term is about different
types of weather. The weather where
we live has been very unusual
recently as there were a few weeks of
heavy rain which caused flooding in
many people´s houses and this week
it has been very cold and snowy.
Some people have been making
snowmen and having snowball fights!
The children suggested all sorts of fun
activities to do in cold, snowy
weather. We also talked about what
clothes are suitable for different types
of weather. You can see on our
photograph that we are all wearing
clothes to keep us warm, with hats,
gloves and scarves.
We are also learning about the four
different seasons, spring, summer,
autumn and winter. Each season has
a different type of weather and this
affects the animals, trees and plants.
For example in winter, when it is cold,
some animals hibernate and the trees
have lost their leaves but in spring,
when it is warmer, the plants start to
grow and the animals have their
babies.
Look at our photo of us in our winter
clothes (pictured above); we are
showing you some of the work that
we have been doing this week-

snowmen, the inside of an igloo and A
Perfect Day For It by Jan Fearnley
which is a story about having fun
sliding down a mountain in the snow.
We hope you all have fun in the snow
too!

LAUDE ROCKS!
In July 2016, Laude San Pedro A’Level student Pawel Czuraj was invited to perform as guest guitarist with singer songwriter and Laude San Pedro teacher ‘Surianne’, on Gibraltar’s popular music TV programme ‘Sessions’. Watch how Pawel added his own magic, complementing the artist’s original songs with percussive rhythmic sections and beautiful guitar solos. We are extremely proud of Pawel who proves to be a very talented guitarist with skills beyond his years! This is episode 1 of a 2 part series -Enjoy! http://www.gbc.gi/tv/programmes/sessions-9

BEE BOTS IN YEAR 1
Following a series of investigations with the Bee Bots, Yr1 are pleased to confirm that learning is fun and that it´s cool to be a nerd. We got off to a flying (and sometimes crashing) start as the children began to discover the joys of algorithms and programming. Shrieks of delight and the occasional cheer could be heard, as Bee Bots demonstrated the importance of clear instruction, by not following the expected trajectory! The Bee Bots are helping us to learn other important lessons too. Working in pairs, gave us an opportunity to practise turn taking and sharing ideas. We also discovered that when your Bee Bot crashes into your circuit, it´s fun to formulate a new improved plan, with a little help from your friends. Mrs. M. Kirby – Year 1 Teacher
TRAVELLING THE WORLD
IN YEAR 3
We have begun our new project
named "Different Places, Similar
Lives," in which we will be looking at
different places and customs
throughout the world. We began by
asking the children to bring things in
from their own countries and explain
the significance of them.
Rayan brought a drum from Morocco
and Zack some Moroccan music;
Miranda brought coffee from
Portugal; Nico a wool shirt from New

Zealand; Nicolás and Abril a yerba
mate gourd, some photos and a
recipe book from Argentina; Polina
brought a matryoshka or matruska
doll from Russia and Lewis brought in
"a skirt for boys," properly known as a
kilt, from Scotland. Unfortunately, he
has outgrown it so we didn't get a
chance to see it being worn, but he
also brought in a tartan beret
(pictured above).
Next week we will be going out into
San Pedro to identify features of our
local area before beginning to learn a
little more about the lives and culture
of people in far away places. We hope
to see that, although we may live in
very different locations around the
world, our values and goals are not so
very different after all.
Miss R. Woods – Year 3 Teacher
THE LONG WAY ROUND
For the last two weeks with year 7
we have been studying measures. For
most of them it was not a new thing
to talk about metres, grams and litres.
They have been taught since they
were young and in their daily life how
to measure with a ruler, but I wanted
them to discover a new tool to
enhance their Maths education. So
we went outside and solved some
problems with both a practical and an
academic side - transforming
centimetres into metres, or
calculating an area after measuring
the length of a square table. What
they enjoyed most was the practical
aspect with the trundle wheel. They
did a very good job, understanding
perfectly how it worked and having
fun measuring even more lengths
than I expected!!

ART ME UP!
Laude Art students from Years 11 to
13 had the fantastic opportunity,
courtesy of the Atrium Gallery,
Marbella to take part in an Arts
Workshop led by Estepona-based
artist Curro Leyton on Tuesday 24th
January.
The artist shared examples of his
current and past work before
engaging the students in a practical
workshop with the central focus of
'Don Quijote'. Curro's now iconic
image of 'Quijote' has been adopted
by the American Hispanic society in
New York and can be seen in the
Muelle Uno Gallery space in Málaga.
All Laude Art students who
participated, created their own
interpretation of 'Quijote' and their
work, alongside Curro's workshop
exemplar piece, will shortly be on
display in the school.

CROSS COUNTRY
CHAMPIONSHIPS
Ten participating schools on the
Costa del Sol took up the challenge to
race over a mixture of flat, undulated
and graded terrain. Laude took a
fantastic 4th
place out of ten schools.

YEAR 10 ENTREPRENEURS
In Business Studies, it's very important that the students get a glimpse of what it's really like to manage a business task and work in teams. We also need to make sure that our students are aware of the current issues the modern world faces. The current topic, and one which students can relate to, is the
sudden attack on sugar in our diets - especially hidden sugar where we expect the food to be healthy.
This is where our task comes in! We will be using the well-known Apprentice programme from the TV to divide our students into competing groups. They must all become their own bosses and department leaders, in charge of their own responsibilities and working as a team. They must create a product low in sugars and research other types of more natural sweeteners (allowing them to build on their own research skills). The final task is to create the product based on their research and present it to the group as a team - much like the candidates do in the programme! Business is dynamic, so the students should be kept up to date with social trends and current issues... and this is way more fun than watching a documentary!

SORELY MISSED – IAIN
MACINNES
On a sadder note, one of our ex-
colleagues, Iain MacInnes, passed
away unexpectedly earlier this year,
at his house in Elche. He was 50 years
old. Iain worked with us at Laude for
3 years, up until 2013. He held
various positions of responsibility
within the school, but he will most
fondly be remembered for his role as
an exceptional Mathematics teacher.
His students and colleagues held him
in high regard and we will remember
him affectionately for his fun-loving
persona and his wonderful knack for
solving problems.
From all of us who had the pleasure to
work alongside Iain at Laude, our
thoughts and prayers are now with his
friends and family.

YEAR 6 VISIT A 2,000 YEAR
OLD SPA!
Year 6 had the perfect day for their
walk to the Roman Baths in
Guadalmina! From our guide, Juan
Carlos, we discovered that the ruins
are 1,800 years old and you can still
see where the Romans used to bath
and how the pools were heated.
Slaves were used to add wood to the
2 ovens under the floor which heated
the hot pools first, then the heat was
able to reach the warm pool where
Romans sat and discuss business and
politics. Finally we saw the cold pools
and how the water was drained into
the sea when fresh water was
needed. The fresh water was brought
by aqueducts from the nearby river.
We also had time to sketch the ruins
and play nearby on the grass. A
fantastic morning!
INTER-HOUSE FOOTBALL
COMPETITION
The boys’ football competition saw a vast number of students involved throughout the day with the introduction of year 6 to the junior secondary competition. The day was a success with lots of good football being played across all age groups in secondary. The overall winners, taking into account the three age groups, were Earth. Many congratulations to them and a big thank you to those staff and students that helped on the day.
Mr. M. Stacpoole – PE Department
ANIMAL KINGDOM IN
EYFS
Early Years and Foundation Stage 1 are enjoying their topic on animals. We are learning how to take care of pets; we are finding out where different animals live from farms to jungles and we are discovering that some animals are now extinct and
how we need to protect animals to ensure they remain on our planet. We are having fun and learning in our role play areas. In our vets we are making sick animals better and in our pet shop we are buying all the things
we need to keep our pets happy and healthy.
Miss Fiona and Miss Sharon – EYFS Teachers
INVESTIGATING SOUND IN
YEAR 4
Despite giving Miss Middleton a
headache, Year 4 had a fun morning
investigating sound. We discovered
that sound travels in waves and is
formed when something is hit,
causing a vibration; sound could be
heard through surfaces, the space
inside a balloon and even when
distance increased; vibrations could
be seen while hitting a drum as lentils
jumped and we could feel strong
vibrations when banging a spoon
attached to wool in our ears!
LAUDE NEWSLETTER Monday 30th January– Volume 6, Issue 4
Edited by: Mr. C. Marchand – Deputy Head of School
After our initial investigations, we
went on to learn exactly how the ear
works and have labelled diagrams for
display. We wonder if you know what
these mean: cochlea, ear canal,
auditory nerve, icicles.
Ms. C. Middleton – Year 4 Teacher
LOVE IS THE CURE!
One of the issues that all schools are faced with is bullying. Bullies only have power if they are supported, either by rallying followers or taking power from their victim. Bullies become bullies because they have low self-esteem, low self-compassion and lack of coping skills to deal with fear of rejection, feelings of low self-worth, failure or being out of control. A person who loves and values who they are will have too much self-respect to bully another. Victims are often targeted because they have low self-esteem and low self-compassion, preventing them from standing up for
who they are and maintaining their personal power. Some are afraid to ask for help and support, and so they remain vulnerable. Teaching self-esteem, self-compassion, kindness and respect, are at the core of our school values system, and offers a solution to not only dealing with individual bullying behavioral issues, but developing systems based on positive heart-centered values, within an upheld boundary system and a no bullying policy. If you child is a victim, exhibiting bullying behavior, or supporting bullying behavior, you can make a difference today by reminding them why you love them, what you like about them, and why you are proud of them. You can ask your child what they are proud of themselves for, what they like about who they are and what they love about themselves. This matters more than anything a bully may say about them or do to them and it is important that these positive statements remain strong. Feeling supported and loved does not stop bullying, but it can reduce it, and it can support a victim to keep loving who they are no matter what.
Ms. A. Behan – Intervention Specialist.
FIGHTING FOR MY DREAM
During the Christmas break I spent
time with QPR! On the 1st of
January, Costa Unida CF gave me a
great opportunity to shadow 1st
team analyst Vinny North, at the
Queens Park Rangers FC training
ground in Harlington. The experience
was great and I thoroughly enjoyed
spending time with the two analysts
LAUDE NEWSLETTER Monday 30th January– Volume 6, Issue 4
Edited by: Mr. C. Marchand – Deputy Head of School
and even got a chance to meet all the
1st team players and staff!
Throughout the day Ian Holloway and
his coaching staff were very friendly
towards me and when Vinny
introduced me to the players and staff
he said “This is Spanish Tom!”, which
created a good atmosphere in the
training ground. The footballers and
coaches kept popping in and out of
their office because QPR had a game
on the 2nd vs Ipswich Town. On the
day they were analysing the
opposition’s; set pieces (penalties,
free kicks, corners), the formation
they play, their key players and any
other major influences Ipswich had on
the oppositions they had played
against this season. The two analysts
would then put a presentation for the
players and staff to watch.
Later on, we watched their training
session and had lunch with the staff. I
managed to sit myself next to Ian
Holloway! Who is a very nice man by
the way!
While I was there, Vinny gave me a
task to do, which was to analyse
QPR’s two central midfielders Ryan
Manning (who made his
Championship debut on the 31st of
December vs Wolves) and Sandro. I
compared the two of them and based
my analysis on: Passing, attitude
towards the game, how good they
were tactically, their body shape
receiving the ball, how good were
they in the final third and finally their
defensive duties
After presenting it to him at the end
of the day I think he was pleased with
my work.
On the 2nd of January it was
matchday. QPR vs Ipswich Town. It
was a big game at Loftus Road. At the
start I was watching Vinny finish off
his work as he and the other analyst
Sam had to present a last minute
presentation to the coaching staff and
players in the changing rooms. After
that, Sam took me out and we walked
on the pitch! I then had to help him
set up the camera and all the other
technical things that were needed.
It was kick off time! The atmosphere
at Loftus Road was electric! However,
the job of an analyst on match day
was quite hard as I had to watch the
live game and work on the computer
at the same time. I found it
challenging to focus and input the
data into the computer and to
transact all that was going on
especially the statistical areas set out
in my task which was to code and
analyse QPR. Nevertheless, it was
another great day at QPR and it was
great to see them win 2-1! Later on,
after my 2 days of work experience
came to an end, Vinny escorted me to
the players lounge where my family
had watched the game! This was
something I didn't know about, so it
was great to see them after the game!
I would like to reiterate that the time I
spent at QPR has been a great honour
and it's something I'll never forget! I
would also like to thank Costa Unida
CF, the club I train with, for giving me
this great opportunity!
