Latur Latur is a city and place of district as well in Indian state of Maharashtra. It

is known for its food- grain trade, oil-seed mills, quality of education and administration. It also houses the biggest trading center of Soybean in India. It is located near the boundary of the state of Karnataka. Marathi is the widely spoken language while Hindi is also spoken by some. Summer is very scorching with its temperature rising up to 45 c while winter provides pleasant weather.

Latur city is one of the emerging city in Maharashtra. There in great transformation and change in this city after 25 years of it’s creation. It is one of the best educational and industrial centers in Maharashtra. There is increasing rate of migration to Latur city. In coming one or two years, this city is planned to be declared as Municipal Corporation. At present rate of urbanization in Latur city is higher. Globalization, privatization and liberalization have impacts on most of the cities in India. Latur is not exception to this experience. Economy

Latur was one of the important trading hub during the time of Nizam of Hyderabad. It is an industrial center as well as agriculture based economy. Latur is the rising Industrial Hub Of Marathwada.

Latur is known all over India for the Quality and Quantity of Pulses that it produces and especially Toor Dall a.k.a. Arhar dal or Pegion Peas. Latur is also a major trading center for Urad, Moong and Channa along with TUR. Also it is known for trading in Oil Seeds mainly Sun-flower and Soya Bean, nutcrackers, locks, brassware, milk powder, ginning and pressing.

Co-operation Sector • Cooperative movement is another ‘Latur Pattern’ recognised at

national level.• Co- operative Movement has been playing an important role in all

round Development of latur. This movement has led concrete step through District central co-op Bank, Sugar Factories, Primary Agriculture co- operative societies, Urban Co- operative societies etc .

• There are about 11 sugar factories among which Manjara,Vikas and Rena are centre of excellence.

• The District Central Cooperative Bank is among the top bank in Maharashtra and is known for its innovative farmer centered schemes. Shubh Mangal Yojana is an example of such scheme.

Agriculture • Agriculture is the Primary occupation in latur.

Sorghum is the the main crop, Sugarcane cultivation is also Significant.

• Area under fruit crop is around 22000 ha.• In last few years 3000 MT grapes have been

exported per annum in European Market. Keshar mango is also being exported to Japan.

• District has significant achievement in dairy ,sericulture, apiculture ,floriculture.

• ‘Soya –Sugar ’contributes around 50% of cultivable area.

Agro-processing• Latur is traditionally known for its pulses & oil processing

industries.• New entrepreneurs in pulp processing, starch, bedana, dairy

product, cold storage for fruit export, cleaning & packaging are coming up.

• SEZ for agro-base industries is being set up on 200 ha by Ramkay International

• India Bulls Ltd has come up to set up Food Park which will provide common facility centre for agro-processing entrepreneurs

• Sericulture project ( cocoon processing &reeling) ,honey processing unit will give impetus to agro-processing industries.

• Agro Export Facilitation Centre for Keshar Mango & Pomegranate is under construction.

Industries Till 1990, Latur languished as a city, remaining an industrially backward. In 1960,

region of Marathwada was merged with Maharashtra. This was the time when the industrial development of the Marathwada region began, propelled through designated backward area benefits. And it was only when the MIDC (Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation) began acquiring land and setting up industrial estates that it began to grow. but still the majority small and medium scale industries are agriculture based and not industry based.

Industrial at Glance • MIDC developed Latur(1336 ha),Ausa (82 ha) Ahmedpur (20ha) Nilanga(17

ha),Udgir(14ha) as an industrial area.• Additional industrial area for Latur of 840ha area has been notified by MIDC.• More than 21 medium &large scale units are working with investment of Rs388 cores • Around 2280 small scale units have been established with investment of Rs 148

crore.• Videocon, India Rayon ,India Bulls & Supreme Industries are going to set up their

plant with investment of Rs 600 crore.• Gas Pipeline of Reliance Industries passes through Ausa Taluka. Gas outlet will be

available for industrial purpose

• Latur is well known for its Latur Patternin educational field at national level.

• It is a cumulative outcome of leadership,educational institutions,people,teachers,parents & students.

• Presently there are more than 2093 schools,33 degree colleges,12 ITIs,3 polytecnics,2 engineering college,2 medical college, agriculture & biotechnology college.

• SRT university has its sub centre in Latur extending courses in technology, management and social science.

• Latur is upcoming as Educational Hub because of its ‘educational movement’

Latur (CRPF) & Chakur(BSF)• CRPF provides training for disaster management. Construction

work of Rs 93 crore is in progress• BSF provides training to BSF recruits. Project cost of Rs 144 crore

has been sanctioned.
