Transcript of Latin America III
Mexico
• In 1824, a federal republican
government was established in Mexico.
But there was constant conflict
between the conservatives and the
liberals.
• In 1832, Antonio Lopez De Santa
Anna was elected president. He was
elected as a liberal, but governed as a
centralist and ignored the Mexican
constitution.
• Santa Anna was in and out as
Mexico’s leader. The liberals and
conservatives were always at odds with
one another, which would lead to war.
Mexico
• La Reforma were reforms initiated by a Liberal Revolution. This resulted in a new constitution. The war of La Reforma ensued: liberals against conservatives. Benito Juarez led the liberals to victory around 1861.
• The 1880s saw a railroad boom, mining code reformation, and landowners were given hydrocarbon rights.
• Manuel Gonzalez was the president during this time. He had the constitution revised so he cold be reelected, which he was about 4 times.
• By the end of the 19th century, new land survey laws allowed landholding concentration. Communities were expanding.
