Quick action by firemen prevented a catastrophe at the Prasi Industrial Estate early Friday when a godown located between two chemical factories caught fire. 1 Do you know that we are victims of air pollution even in the privacy of our homes? It is not uncommon for us to try every means possible to protect our sanctuaries from the ravages of nature that man unknowingly has created. How are we to keep the air fresh in our homes? How are we to have that breathe of fresh air?

2 Commercial air fresheners are available in different scents and fragrances. These are effective but are only temporary solutions for common household odours. These air fresheners will only mask odours. Some have even been known to work on your nasal

passages and coat them with an oily scent. Some even add a nerve deadening agent to them so that it appears that the scent is gone when it actually lingers and reappears when the freshener runs out.

3 A surefire way to know that your air freshener is safe and effective is to make it yourself. Although this may sound like a long tedious messy procedure, it actually isn't so, and the rewards are many. The safer alternatives available to you are simple and straightforward. 15

4 When you open the windows of your home in the early hours of the morning and keep them open for some time during the day, you freshen your home. The air that flows in and out plus the sun's rays that shine into your home adds a freshness to the home. Ventilation is the best and really the most effective method. With opened doors and windows, you will be sure to reap the rewards of an odour free home and also reduce the chance of toxic fumes building up from a slow leak of a gas range.

5 The common household ingredient - vinegar is a safe and environmentally friendly air freshener. Vinegar is most effective in killing stubborn cooking odours left over from fish and strong meats. What you need to do is to boil one tablespoon of vinegar with one cup of water to freshen the air in the home. Should you require long-term air freshening with vinegar, partially fill small cups or saucers and place them in corners of each room of your house.

6 There is no need to fear children or pets would get to the vinegar because vinegar is completely safe and non-toxic. Vinegar packs a wallop not to be forgotten when a curious inquisitive child or pet tastes it. One can almost guarantee that if the child or pet tastes it once, they will not go back for seconds.

7 You can put your creative talents to practice by making your own potpourri for boiling as it is not only safe but so simple and fun to do. The spices found on the spice rack should be your next target. Cloves and cinnamon are effective and very simple for boiling. Any cook worthy of her culinary talents would have these two items stashed away somewhere in the pantry, if not openly displayed in the kitchen shelves. 40

8 Baking soda placed in refrigerators to remove odours is a classic cure all for odour ills. When you have the unbearable odours from the garbage bin, just place a half-cup of baking soda in your garbage disposal and allow it to churn the odour away.

9 What about the tangy onion smell from your hands and the refrigerator? A celery stalk! Just the vegetable to remove it. A further use of the celery stick is to rub it on your hands and you can effectively remove the onion, or even garlic, odour from your skin. When you have eaten onion or garlic and it leaves a lingering taste in your mouth, how are you to remove “it'? Eating a celery stick will do the trick, it acting as a natural air freshener. 50
