BioE Career Areas based on your degree
Concentration Areas
Important that you expose and go outside of your regular familiarity to be able to work out there as a biomedical engineer! Take myself for example
Cell and Tissue Engineer but really work as a clinical engineer for my master’s degree
This takes more than just C&T
o Computer Programming
o Imaging
o Bioinstrumentation
o Biomaterials
o Entrepreneur/Industrial coursework
o Neural networks (for image processing purposes)
How would you define your career?
BEING CREATIVE!
Intellectual Property [IP]
A snapshot into the world of IP
What is it?
Establishing recognizable rights to any creation
by an individual
Consists of the following:
Patents
Trademarks
Copyrights
Trade Secrets
Why should you do it as a BME?
Provides awareness and exposure to emerging
start-up technologies and/or companies which
deal with biomedical engineering
Gains insight and experience of using appropriate
problem-solving and assessing skills as a
biomedical engineer to determine usefulness,
novelty and/or obviousness of a disclosed
technology
Example - http://otm.uic.edu/technologies/early-
extraction-fetal-heart-sounds
What would HR look for an IP applicant?
Skills in the following: Literature search
Patent Searching
Good scientific/engineering background Its not just about the good grades and coursework exposure
Go out there and get your feet wet with experience!
Problem solver, being analytical
Technical Writing
Depends on how far you choose to go!
Tech-savvy
An understanding of how the medical industry works
My job at OTM As a Technology Commercialization Analyst, I….
Screening disclosed inventions for potential opportunity and assessment through the review of current work in the field
In parallel of the review, interviews are conducted by the Tech. Manager with the inventor and team
A cumulative assessed report is produced by the screener (me) to provide for my Manager to present for the OTM team
Additional Projects Marketing Faculty Outreach
Final Thoughts
