Late-night television has had its share of changes lately, and here comes the next one.

Just over a year after Seth Meyers took over NBC’s “Late Night,” he’s getting a new rival in the time slot, but a very friendly competitor: Soon after being named Craig Ferguson’s CBS successor, British talent James Corden appeared on Meyers’ program in what turned out to be a mutual-admiration-fest. “The Late Late Show With James Corden” has its premiere Monday, March 23 (which technically is Tuesday, March 24, following the Monday “Late Show With David Letterman”).

“There’s nothing more creative I think I’ll ever do in my career than to try to make an hour of television every day,” the cherubic Corden says. “I’m from High Wycombe, which you’ve never heard of, in Buckinghamshire, and there is just no rhyme or reason why I should be given the opportunity to host a late-night talk show and talk to America every night and hopefully try and make them smile before – or more like whilst – they fall asleep.”

A multimedia star in his native England, also encompassing his award-winning work on the TV sitcom “Gavin & Stacey,” Corden already has been a presence in America through his work on Broadway (in “One Man, Two Guvnors,” which he brought across the Atlantic and earned a Tony Award for) and in movies (“Into the Woods,” “Begin Again”). As he launches his new mission for CBS, he’ll be getting first-week help from scheduled guests including Tom Hanks, Kerry Washington (“Scandal”), Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart.

“I keep coming back to this word “warmth,” Corden reflects. “I really feel like in this current climate in this time, we want to make a warm show, a show that never feels spiky. And because so much of what you see and read and are polluted by is not pleasant right now, I feel like if we can make a show that just sort of reaches out to people, really, and reminds that there are still wonderful things ... it is still great that we could do that.”

As for the hour’s nightly structure, though, that may not be defined until “The Late Late Show With James Corden” hits the air – or even for some time after that.

“There’s no strict format right now,” confirms Rob Crabbe (“The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon”), an executive producer of the program along with Ben Winston (“The X Factor UK”). “James is not a traditional stand-up comedian. Straightforward joke-telling is not something that he does a ton of, so we are going to sort of consider other paths besides the traditional monologue.

“We want to be guest-focused,” adds Crabbe. “Being the host of this great party at 12:30 (a.m.), you want to have your guests have the best time possible. In summary, we’re still figuring it out.”

J ILLFLINT of ‘The Night Shift’ on NBC

How do you assess your Jordan’s renewed relationship with Eoin Macken’s TC in Season 2 of “The Night Shift”? I guess this season, you get to see more of what made TC and Jordan fall in love with each other in the first place. You really get to see the inside and how they are with each other. At the end of last season, TC finally confesses to Jordan – (and) I think it was something that really put a wedge between the two of them – that he feels like he’s guilty and at fault for the death of his brother. He’s been carrying this around with him for such a long time. For him to be able to open up to her and really share this with her, I think it changed the relationship.Last season, they were at odds with each other quite often, and there was a huge history behind that. And now, you get to see why they really do love each other. When somebody’s recovering, I think that you make many strides forward, but then you also fall back. So, who knows how long it will last? But for now, I think that they’re just enjoying each other.

What are your thoughts about reprising your recurring guest role on CBS’ “The Good Wife”?It would be great to go back. I love working on that show, and I really, truly love working with Archie (Panjabi, soon to leave the series). She’s so generous, she really gives me room to collaborate, and she cares about what my opinion is. It’s one of those things where I feel lucky not to just show up and do what I do. We really work together to inform those characters and that relationship.

MICHAELSYMON of ‘All-Star Academy’ on

Food NetworkHow would you characterize the skill level of the contestants on Food Network’s “All-Star Academy”?I would say that they are relatively advanced ... from a technique standpoint, like grilling, roasting, sauteing, poaching, things of that nature. Where they need a lot of guidance is, like, combining of flavors and putting together a complete dish, which isn’t something that they’ve been making on a daily basis. Creativity. You know, I think that they understand technique but they don’t 100 percent understand creativity.

It sounds like some of this comes with training, no?Yeah, absolutely. I think a lot of it comes with training. I think most home cooks and even young chefs – sometimes I think people think of creativity as being more ingredients or combining weird things or doing something crazy. It’s more about, I feel, developing your palate and putting flavors together that really work together and it doesn’t have to have a million ingredients to be creative. It just has to be executed properly and, like, a slightly different look at maybe something that’s a classic.

So in getting people to stop and taste while cooking, which you like to do, it sounds like you’re forcing them to concentrate on the step immediately before them and not be

so concerned with the end result, correct?Absolutely, yep. I guess I liken it, in a weird sports way, it’s like when ... they ask a coach about a game in two weeks, it’s like, “No, we’re worrying about this week.” And it’s the same exact thing with cooking. It’s like we’re going to get to the final part of this recipe or this technique – whatever we’re making – but let’s not forget about the first five minutes because typically those are the most important.

MARIANNEJEAN-BAPTISTEWere you a fan of Season 1 of “Broadchurch” before signing on for your episodes?I had no knowledge of the show before being approached. They sent me the first series so I could have an idea of what I was getting into. I watched all eight back to back except for little tea breaks. I was blown away by it, honestly.

Did you find it useful to be working on location?Yes. It’s such a lovely place, so there’s this huge irony between beauty and the ugliness that happened there. Also, Sharon is an outsider, and I was coming in to this unfamiliar place as a new person to this well-established “family.”

What kind of preparation did you do?I did a lot of research on (Queen’s Counsel). I read up on the sort of place where Sharon might have gone, trying to work out where she had come from and how she had got to where she is now, with her own chambers and her own people.

Are you a fan of courtroom dramas? When I was a kid, there was a show called “The Paper Chase.” That was actually more about law students than the law itself, but I found it very interesting. Then we had a British series that I used to watch called “Crown Court.” There was a new case every week, someone else in the dock. When they’re at their best, these shows are just really good.

For those of us not fortunate enough to escape the brutal cold and snow that this winter has wrought, Food Network offers salve for the soul with a new special that takes viewers along on a cruise to the Bahamas.

The hourlong “Disney Dream Cruise With Food Network,” airing Friday, March 27, brings network personalities Melissa d’Arabian (“Guy’s Grocery Games”), Jeff Mauro (“The Kitchen”), Amanda Freitag (“Chopped”) and Katie Lee (“The Kitchen”), as well as family and friends, aboard the Disney Dream cruise ship for three days of sun, sight-seeing and, naturally, food as they sail the waters off Florida to Nassau and the Disney-owned island of Castaway Key.

“It was so fun to take my family along with me on the cruise,” Lee says. “I brought my mom, my best friend and her husband and their son, Kai, who is my godson. Disney plays such a big part in children’s lives, so it was great to share Kai’s excitement. Hanging out at the beach and getting massages didn’t exactly feel like work.”

But there was work to be done. In the special, Lee tours the ship’s kitchen and witnesses the massive amounts of meals the staff churns out on a daily basis, as well as the number of eggs used. And while this is, after all, institutional cooking, she was impressed by the imaginativeness of the cuisine.

“On the ship, we filmed in the restaurant Remy, which is an upscale French restaurant,” she says. “I spent some time in the kitchen with the chef, and he put an incredible amount of thought and care into every dish.”

Lee, who indicates her last cruise was in 7th grade, enjoyed the experience and embraced the respite from winter.

“Castaway Key was really fun and we had a great time,” she says. “We swam with sting rays and fed them as well, which was so cool. My favorite thing was just hanging on a float in the crystal clear blue water, soaking up the sun. It’s been so cold in New York this winter, I was really happy to have some warm weather.”

Becoming friends with Norman Bates can be, and typically is, a dangerous thing.

“Revolution” alum Tracy Spiridakos is in the early stages of learning that as one of the latest cast additions to “Bates Motel,” A&E Network’s Monday “Psycho”-prequel series now in its third season. She plays new motel tenant and professional escort Annika, whose frankness and comfort in her own skin appeal to young Norman (Freddie Highmore) ... but getting to know him frequently puts personal safety at risk.

“She’s such a strong, confident woman,” Spiridakos confirms, “and she sees this mom who’s overprotective of her son,” referring to Vera Farmiga’s Norma Bates. “To (Annika), he’s just this kid who can’t stop looking down her cleavage. She’s used to that kind of attention, but she sees him as this sweet young man – which is interesting, based on who he is, what’s happened to him and his secret.”

Having worked on the former NBC drama “Revolution” during much of “Bates Motel’s” earlier run, Spiridakos caught up on the A&E show quickly once she was hired for it. “I’m a big fan of Vera’s,” she adds, “and she’s been just lovely. I’m thrilled to get to be a part of this team. I can’t say enough good things about them.”

The showcase role of “Revolution” heroine Charlie was a definite boon for Spiridakos: “I came from Canada for pilot season and ended up on this show with amazing people behind it and on it, and it was absolutely a career-changer for me. On ‘Revolution’ as well, you weren’t supposed to say anything (about what was coming up), and I am the worst at that! I’m such an honest person, it’s hard.”

Clueless

wannabe film makers look to hit the

‘Big Time’Two police detectives interrogate a drug suspect under heat lamps in an otherwise dark room. Dissatisfied with the answers they’re getting, one shoves his cigar in the man’s eye.

As the perp wails in agony, the background begins to shift and rise to reveal it’s actually a garage door that’s part of a garage and home belonging to a 60-ish couple who are coming home from a day of shopping, the two cops are their aspiring filmmaker sons, and the perp is their Latino gardener. As the boys admonish the parents for ruining their movie scene, the folks query where all their stuff went in the makeshift studio.

That opening segment gives a pretty good idea what to expect from Comedy Central’s latest foray into scripted comedy, “Big Time in Hollywood, FL,” premiering Wednesday, March 25.

The half-hour series stars Alex Anfanger and Lenny Jacobson as Jack and Ben, two delusional twentysomethings who fancy themselves as the next important voices in cinema as they live off Mom and Dad (Kathy Baker, Stephen Tobolowsky) in their South Florida home. The only trouble is, they lack any movie-making talent whatsoever though they remain fervent in pursuing their dream. And with scenes like the opener, it’s no surprise that the folks would like their progeny to grow up, become men and move out – and fast.

“Big Time” is the brainchild of co-creators and executive producers Anfanger and Dan Schimpf, former NYU film

students who pitched the show to Comedy Central fresh off their success with the Web series “Next Time on Lonny.” And just like Ben and Jack, the two pals moved in to the Los Angeles home of Anfanger’s parents to write it.

“It definitely was a reflection of how we felt about ourselves,” says Anfanger with a laugh, “except for the fact that Ben and Jack have no perception of how terrible they are. They’re just these delusional, inflated-ego, maniacal brothers.

“(The series) is obviously a really perverted version of what was around us,” he continues. “Like, I’m very close with my parents, so it’s kind of nothing like my character, who we created this alternate version of, essentially. But yeah, it would pull kind of from experience. We thought it would be fun to lay that as a foundation for the world that we wanted to create.”

Baker, who plays the mom, was impressed with how two guys in their late 20s could ably write dialog for a mature married couple.

“These 28-year-old guys, who aren’t married, would write a funny, believable, loving, sometimes contentious real marriage, but within the heightened realism of this whole show,” she says. “But they were grounded. I think it was important for them to have this relationship, too, this marriage. I think they liked having that relationship to counterbalance all the craziness of the sons. They’re just very skilled and very funny.”

The CWs ‘iZombie’ is a truly BRAINY show

“We wanted to do a case-of-the-week show,” adds Thomas. “In the comic book, the main character is a gravedigger and that’s how she gets her brains. By making her (in the series) an assistant medical examiner and putting her in the morgue, it gave us our case of the week that we wanted.”

Also seen previously on Showtime’s “Masters of Sex,” McIver wears makeup in “iZombie” that makes it reasonably clear she’s playing a member of the undead, but it’s refined as the show goes along. “We’ve kind of refined it down to about an hour-and-a-half now,” the actress says, “but it’s a wig. (And) it is airbrushing my skin, any skin that’s exposed. I’ve been fighting for, like, skivvies and long sleeves.

“And we cover me in this white and translucent makeup, and then there’s a lot of smoky eye work. And the team that have created it have done such a good job, and I feel like when I put that on, it really does do a lot of the work for me in terms of making the character.”

While most of those around Liv know what’s happened to her, a few don’t ... including her ex-boyfriend Major, played by “One Tree Hill” alum Robert Buckley in his return to The CW. Though many “iZombie” scenes are infused with ironic humor, he has to play his relatively straight.

“I think the hardest thing dealing with a breakup is when you don’t know why it happened,” Buckley reasons, “so he’s just looking for some sort of explanation as to why his soul mate suddenly doesn’t want to be with him. And I know selfishly as the actor, I’m also like, ‘Come on. Look at her hair. Look at her skin, Major. Like, is it not obvious? Ask what happens. She didn’t just go emo/goth overnight.’ ”

Talk about brain power.

The heroine of The CW’s new Tuesday series “iZombie” has it ... and not entirely by choice. Inspired by a same-named comic book, the seriocomic show from “Veronica Mars” mentor Rob Thomas casts Rose McIver (alias Tinker Bell on ABC’s “Once Upon a Time”) as Liv, a medical resident who joins the undead after attending a wild (to put it mildly) party. Brains are the means of sustaining her new existence, and for each one she consumes while working in the Seattle coroner’s office, she inherits related memories and traits that help her solve the given victim’s murder.

“We didn’t hew terribly closely to the source material,” explains Thomas, who shares executive-producer credit with his “Veronica Mars” colleague Diane Ruggiero-Wright. “In the ‘iZombie’ comic book, there’s a whole monster universe. There are were-terriers and ghosts. We wanted to stay strictly zombie, so we only have zombies in the show. And we really needed a story engine.

Several stars of “Nashville” aren’t only playing country-music stars on television, they’re actually living the life.

Last year, ABC’s “Nashville: On the Record” episode showcased the actors performing for a concert audience in the title city, and they also took that show to Chicago, New York and Washington, D.C. Part of that history repeats as the network airs the new “Nashville: On the Record 2” Wednesday, March 25, with Charles Esten, Clare Bowen, Chris Carmack, Will Chase, Aubrey Peeples, Jonathan Jackson and Sam Palladio among those displaying the vocal talents they also apply to the drama series.

They share Nashville’s legendary Grand Ole Opry stage with actual country royalty, too, in the hour taped at the end of January. Reba McEntire offers her single “Going Out Like That,” and Deana Carter joins Esten on a song they co-wrote, “I Know How to Love You Now.”

“From the very beginning,” the friendly Esten notes, “I said, ‘This show is not a dream come true for me. It’s multiple dreams come true.’ I started out as a musician back in college, and I wasn’t sure what I was going to do, always thinking I’d be able to do the music along the way. Early on, I got to play Buddy Holly in a stage production and got to do some song improv, but it never really came together like this has. It’s just heaven for me right now.”

Popular among “Nashville” fans as Rayna’s (Connie Britton) once-and-again love Deacon, Esten – who goes

by the nickname “Chip” – reports he met his then-future singing-songwriting partner Carter “on a flight, and her kids were fans of the Disney Channel show ‘Jessie,’ on which I played the dad. That’s how she knew me, and I knew her, of course. And we kept threatening to write together, and we finally got to.”

The result of their collaboration became a part of “Nashville,” which is now in its third season. Esten recalls, “Callie Khouri, the great writer-creator of the show (and Oscar-winning writer of the 1991 movie ‘Thelma & Louise’), came to me and said, ‘I’m about to write a scene where Deacon proposes to Rayna. Is there anything you think you’d like to say?’ And I said, ‘Well, it’s a funny thing you should say that ... .’ ” Esten mentioned the just-written song, and Khouri’s “eyes lit up and she said, ‘Can we use that?’ And I thought, ‘Uh-oh.’ ”

Not only was Esten pleased to perform “I Know How to Love You Now” on the series, he’s happy to team with Carter in rendering it on the new “On the Record” episode. “She and Reba are just who they are,” he says, “very kind and welcoming and open. Over Christmas, Reba had a party, and we were sitting side-by side by the piano singing carols with friends. You’re definitely pinching yourself while all of this is going on.”

As the Detroit Red Wings eye a 24th consecutive trip to the Stanley Cup playoffs, they’re hoping their captain and veteran left winger Henrik Zetterberg continues his solid play. The 11-year veteran has been feeding the puck to his teammates all season while occasionally finding the net himself. With less than a month left in regular season, Zetterberg and the Red Wings are vying for playoff positioning. At this writing, they were near the top five in the Eastern Conference as they host the St. Louis Blues Sunday, March 22, on NBC.

Zetterberg is not the scoring machine he once was. His best season was 2007-08, when he scored 43 regular season goals along with an additional 13 in playoffs on his way to earning playoff MVP honors and leading the Red Wings to a championship. He is, however, holding his own in the assists department and should easily top 40, which is respectable compared to his prime seasons.

After the 2012 NHL lockout, during which Zetterberg spent time on the ice with EV Zug in Switzerland, he was named captain of the Red Wings in early 2013, succeeding Nicklas Lidstrom. Back problems flared up the following season and even though he was named captain of Sweden’s Olympic team, he was forced to not only step aside during the Olympics, but for much of the remaining NHL season.

The Red Wings are hoping Zetterberg’s return to form results in their return to Stanley Cup playoff glory.

JAY BOBBIN’S THEATRICAL MOVIE REVIEW

REVIEW

MOVIES

Was a “Hot Tub Time Machine 2” necessary?

Absolutely not ... but when you have a title like that to play with, it’s understandable that the filmmakers felt they had to take the shot. They did. Now, they really, really don’t have to make a “Hot Tub Time Machine 3.”

Minus John Cusack this time, returning players Rob Corddry, Craig Robinson and Clark Duke get promotions of sorts as they use that magical hot tub to go back to the future. This time, they’re trying to figure out who shot Corddry’s character at one of his wild parties – and to alter history so that the assault won’t happen when time catches up.

If that description of “Hot Tub Time Machine 2” sounds pretty linear, rest assured there are plenty of detours while you’re actually watching the movie. Director Steve Pink and screenwriter Josh Heald have returned to throw in every

shot at current times that they can think of, with many of those on the decidedly raunchy side.

Fans of the original “Hot Tub Time Machine” may get a kick out of seeing some of the other original players back as well, the most prominent being Chevy Chase. There’s even a hint of Cusack’s presence, since Adam Scott (“Parks and Recreation”) turns up as his son.

Being overly critical of “Hot Tub Time Machine 2” almost seems cruel, since the picture knows just what it is ... and knows it isn’t going to be everyone’s cup of tea. Put it this way: You won’t think you stumbled into “The Imitation Game” by accident.

Once for this hot tub was fine, especially with Cusack’s wit as both performer and producer. Twice? OK, that’s it. Anyone has the right to give another attempt a try, but now, it’s time to empty that tub for good.
