Last night, on the Head’s Lawn, as the sun appeared and disappeared behind clouds and The Baily Building, we bid a proud farewell to a group of incredible young men and women. In our first ever Year 8, socially-distanced and live-streamed, Prize Giving I was delighted to be able to recognise the very many talents of and contributions made by our Year 8 pupils over the many years of their full and ever-changing Hazelwood journey. Our Head Girl, Michelle, made reference in her eloquent address to the friendships which have grown and been cemented amongst this group of diverse and wide-ranging characters and personalities and how their time at Hazelwood, in promoting empathy and respect, has allowed this to happen. Assembled in their bubbles on the Head’s Lawn, resplendent in their blue blazers (the first Hazelwood cohort to graduate in the new attire), I couldn’t agree more; a group of fiercely independent and motivated individuals working well in isolation of each other but gaining phenomenal strength and resilience when pulling together as a team. Their journey to the top of the Hazelwood tree has not been without complications, but from where I was standing last night, having reached the pinnacle, the view was nothing but inspiring and aspiring. Hazelwood School could not wish for a better group of ambassadors to send out into the world of discovery and enrichment, intent on being themselves and making all around them proud of their many future achievements. They, along with the whole school community have responded so well to the current unsettled situation, equipping themselves with resolve and focus to tackle the all-new approach to learning,

assessment and transition that COVID 19 has forced upon them. I know that the younger pupils of the school looked up to these 37 fine and upstanding individuals and found in them, the perfect role models. Calm and considerate, focused and forgiving, inspiring and ingenious, passionate and patient. I wish them all the very best and hope that they will stay in touch with all their Hazelwood friends.

We also bid a fond farewell to some of our Year 6 cohort who are moving onto their chosen Senior School choices in September. Without the customary Leavers’ Drinks and Assemblies, the sharing of memories and best wishes were staged through a special Zoom meeting on Friday morning. They too have served the school well and I hope they are taking with them very many fond memories of their time at Hazelwood. As in previous years, they are going on to a wide range of Senior Schools at which I am sure they will prosper and thrive drawing on all the skills and aptitudes that they have honed over their time with us. Miss Parr, Mr Paisley and Mr Rady will also be embarking on new challenges in September and our best wishes go with them to their new schools and teaching training colleges. Each has given so much to the pupils of Hazelwood who I am confident have benefitted from their dedication and inspiration. We thank Miss Parr for her five years as a wonderful Lower School class teacher and will miss her boundless reserves of energy and positive attitude. Mr Paisley and Mr Rady leave behind them two pairs of enormous Assistant Tutor shoes to be filled by next year’s recruits. Although only with us for a single year, both have left behind them friends and impressions that will last a whole lot longer. Whilst on the subject of staff news, I am delighted that Mr Charlie Tappin will be with us for the autumn term (at least) to continue his cool and under-stated leadership of the Music Department. The Year 8 Jazz Band performed effortlessly at the Year 8 Prize Giving encapsulating the diversifying musical output of our Hazelwood pupils under Charlie’s baton.

One more Christmas Concert with this breadth of musical talent represented will be something to look forward subject to our ability in December to be able to stage such a performance!

And so the summer term and 19/20 academic year have drawn to a close. Whilst, with everything that has been thrown in our collective way over the past 12 weeks, some may feel like they have limped home, I feel that we have, as a community, romped over the finishing line with our hands held aloft. We have not been defeated nor have we run out of steam after an initial and vibrant early burst of energy and ideas. We have kept going and importantly, kept each other going. There has been challenge but there has also been support and understanding. We have embraced the new whilst holding on to as much of the familiar as was possible. We have sought out creative solutions whilst grounding them in rigour and regulation. Our eyes, after a few days to draw breath, are now firmly fixed on September and what the Government update (issued yesterday) will allow us to do for the start of the new academic year. The school’s Leadership Team will be drawing up a plan over the next few weeks in close collaboration with the Governors in the hope that advice will not change and that any possible resurgence of COVID 19 will firmly remain a what-if scenario. Our plans, once ratified, will be shared with you in due course. Rest assured, we will approach September with the same attention to every last detail which has been mindful of the health and well-being of staff and pupils during this Phased Return to School. Until that time however, please focus on enjoying your well-deserved holiday. If you are travelling within the UK or abroad, please stay safe and follow current guidelines. Thank you for your continued support of the school. Here’s to whatever September brings!

We are writing to thank you and ALL of the staff at Hazelwood for your incredible response during this period of uncertainty. Hazelwood has been nothing short of amazing in coping through this epidemic.

“I believe that we have provided you with the knowledge and skills and grit to go out there and flourish, and as such I have decided on a rather simple message today. It is quite simple but arguably could be equally hard, and that is that as you move to your new school with new friends and teachers, be confident enough to “Be true to yourself”. It’s an old message – Shakespeare wrote it in Hamlet, ‘To thine own self be true’ – but I think it’s the perfect message for 2020 and beyond – and the perfect message for you, as Year 8 leavers about to embark on their next adventure. I absolutely loved senior school. Even more so than university, which is quite unusual. I have often asked myself why I associate this time with so much happiness and exactly what was it that made this uniquely special for me. I would say it was a school where I was given the space and time to be myself, to try a variety of experiences (although at this point I was pretty settled on music) and where I could spend my time with like-minded teenagers. I was not part of any particular crowd, and this has never been important to me. However, I had a small group of friends who enjoyed one another’s company for who they were as individuals. We had a huge music department, where I practically lived, but I equally threw myself into sport, all be it that I enjoyed the company of the 14th hockey team initially. My passion for music grabbed me early; your passion might not be evident yet. And remember you cannot find your passion by watching others from the side-lines, you have to get stuck in and play, learning the rules for yourself. My school was, and your schools will all be, unique but the one thing they all have in common is opportunity Be true to yourself. Align your actions with your beliefs. Do not pretend to be somebody in order to fit in to a group. It will be ok. Remember you cannot try and be someone else, someone else is already taken. And who will be you? YOU are brilliant and an individual. To be yourself you need integrity. Do not compromise your morals. Your own personal thoughts and beliefs are really important. There will always be different points of view and different ways of looking at life. This is a good thing. Believe in yourself, have ambition for yourself and for those around you. We talk a lot about how to show respect for others – listening, collaborating, generosity – but at the heart of respect is respect for ourselves. Accept who you are and be proud of your own journey. Deliver credible work, be a trusted individual and team member and make your efforts matter, remembering that respect for yourself and others are equally important. There will be a wealth of new things to try, from subjects to sport, to performing arts to travelling the world. Go for it! Create experiences, jump in, attempt those seemingly impossible challenges which might seem completely beyond you; give yourself chances and if something sparks, go after it. It may light the way to a whole new path in life – or it may just become one of those unusual experiences you laugh about afterwards. But you will learn about yourself through the process of trying – and will certainly make many friendships along the way. Knowing what you want to do is just as important as knowing what you don’t want to do. But know that things will go wrong. Learn from every mistake and from every experience and encounter. Learn particularly from your mistakes then figure out what is the next right move. It may be that your journey lies in a different direction – or that you need the time and patience to try again. But don’t shy away from pushing yourself – achieving your goals rarely comes easily. Enough determination and perseverance can turn things around. And take a risk. Why not? Be brave enough to tackle the unknown and see what happens. So please see yourself as someone who is willing to try the different flavours of life, rather than clinging to the more familiar, too cautious to try something new. A closed mind-set meets closed doors. If we believe that our opportunities are endless, they truly will be and the doors of the world will open up before us.”

Year 1 say it with flowers! Ms Smith-Chandler’s Year 1 class wrapped up their Flower Festival topic by making bouquets of flowers using different materials found around the house which they proudly shared on ZOOM. Such beautiful displays with the added benefit of never fading nor wilting. The children showed such creativity and imagination sourcing all manner of different media from which to craft their floral arrangements. Blooming marvelous Year 1!

School Uniform Shop - Summer drop off and opening times Dear Parents As we near the end of term, (although items of uniform haven’t been worn since March!) many of you will have items that your children have grown out of, or need to buy new items as your children progress through the school. This is normally a busy time for the Second-hand uniform shop, and we are hoping to make it as smooth a process as possible, despite COVID challenges! So, please read on for dates and times for you to drop off unwanted uniform and buy new sizes. PLEASE ensure that you visit only on the times indicated - this year, we are unable to accommodate ‘ad-hoc’ donations and visits, in order to keep everyone safe. Thank you for your patience and co-operation.

To Flo B She’s done it.....Flo B (4L) has worked incredibly hard this half term to achieve her personal challenge of getting 3,000,000 coins in TT Rock Stars. She is now the youngest person to achieve a triple platinum award (and the 2nd person ever!). This is an amazing achievement and it takes a huge amount of dedication and hard work to get this award. Well done Flo - you super star! Hopefully her skill and talent did not desert her in the Interhouse TT Rockstars Challenge.

To Luke P who likes nothing better than going for walks and picking up litter along the way. Luke enjoys doing his bit to save the planet!

News from the Nursery With many Term Time children finishing for the summer break having enjoyed the last five weeks on site we are getting ready to welcome back more children next week. We are very excited to have more children joining us and look forward to a ‘Jam Packed July’ The last two weeks have been very busy here at HNEY. Please see below for an insight into the fun the children have had! This week in Fledglings, we have become princes and princesses. The children have enjoyed creating crowns by using glue to stick gems and sequins on as well as using different materials to create a fun shield! We have got messy by exploring shaving foam on the table using paint brushes, spoons and our hands. The children have been getting stuck in with the cleaning by using water and paintbrushes to clean the fence in our garden.

In Lower Robins, we have been looking at farming. We have created animal masks and have been playing a matching game where we have to find all the parents for the baby animals. We have also been looking at numbers by doing a dot to dot drawing and have been using our singing skills to sing different animal and farm songs. In Upper Robins this week we have been continuing our theme of under the sea. The children have been busy making a big great white shark for our canvas. We have also been using our gross motor skills to kick and throw our new footballs when playing on the grass area. Upper Robins have also been exploring and went on a sea creature hunt when down on the tennis courts.

We’re singing in the rain –literally! Skylarks Bubble A watched the famous Gene Kelly scene before taking to the outdoors and making their own dances to the melody. They had so much fun, and all agreed they hoped it would rain more so they could jump in the puddles. With this week’s weather being rather changeable, we have alternated between chasing our shadows and making sundials, to exploring colour mixing in ‘rainbow bags’, using ‘rain sprayers’ to identify numbers, and playing musical games with our rain-stick shakers. After taking a vote, Skylarks unanimously hope the weather man can offer us a sunny weekend so they can ‘wear t-shirts and shorts’, ‘play outside in the paddling pool’ and ‘have ice cream’!

OaK and Year 1 Sing and eat a rainbow!

Oak and Year 1 enjoyed a Rainbow Day on Thursday with colourful costumes and activities in abundance. The children were encouraged to fill their lunchboxes with rainbow-inspired foods and lots of craft making and specially themed maths and English challenges filled the children’s day with technicoloured brightness!

Page 15: Last night, on the Head’s Lawn, as the sun appeared and … · 2020-07-03 · Last night, on the Head’s Lawn, as the sun appeared and disappeared behind clouds and The Baily Building,

Well done to everyone who contributed to the ‘I Can Sing a Rainbow’ project for Hazelwood’s first ever virtual Picnic Concert. It was one of the highlights of the thirty minute programme. We hope to share it via social media once all permissions have been received in from parents. A beautiful moment in the school’s lockdown history.

Welcome to the world!

Well done to the artists of Year 6 whose submissions into the end of term Y6 Art Competition had Mrs Tulett so baffled that she had to call in the assistance of other Upper School teachers to help judge the many entries. As diverse in subject matter as they were numerous, Mrs Tulett was impressed with the quality and supported the judges’ decisions. Congratulations to Sam W, Alex, Jessica and Isla whose work came out on top in each of the bubbles.

The Nutshell is delighted to

Congratulations to everyone who rose to Mrs Bilbrough’s challenge and nurtured their handful of beetroot seeds first into seedlings and plants and then into fully fledged beetroots. On the closing date of the competition, Mrs B was overwhelmed with the number of entries and impressed with how well the beetroots had grown. Our three age group winners were Henry D (Y1) with a beetroot measuring 25.4cms in circumference, Victoria R (Oak) with prize-winning circumference of 21.6cms and Charlotte D (Y4) who vegetable luckily matched her brother Henry’s beetroot, measuring in at 25.4cms. The Nutshell hopes that the beetroots have now found their way into a delicious summer salad!

Well done Ella and Isla

Year 2 dived to the bottom of the ocean in search of sea creatures. After laughing and smiling through a Form Time in mask and snorkel, Mrs Watanabe’s cheeks were aching all day! There were some great costumes on display and some great work done earlier in the week with the children writing animal riddles. Can you guess what animal Jack and Ella are describing?

Years 6 and 8 branch out Mr Sone, Hazelwood’s Gardener and Forest Schools Assistant, took the pupils of the Year 6 and 8 bubbles into the woods to teach them all about woodland coppicing and tree maintenance. In an area overrun with self-seeded saplings, the pupils were taught all about managing the woodland and the need to thin out the smaller, weaker trees to allow the stronger specimens to grow and thrive. The groups worked hard and cleared a great space which will be used in Forest Schools next term.
