Stewardship: 2014
By now, all parishioners should have received Nativity’s stewardship
materials for 2014 … The ACTS of Nativity (Annual Call To
Stewardship). Please return your pledge sheets to the parish office
as a way of indicating your desire to support our parish with a
portion of time, talent, and treasure as we move into 2014. This is a
very important commitment that all parishioners are asked to make
on an annual basis.
Please remember that it is the policy of Nativity that each school
family submit a stewardship pledge sheet in order to receive the
Catholic Tuition Rate for the upcoming school year (2014 -
15). Thank you for your support of our parish and school.
Save the Date On April 15th, Indianapolis Police Detective Darin Odier will be
presenting a program about being cyber safe to Nativity fifth
through eighth graders. He will also be presenting an insightful
program keeping kids cyber safe to parents during the evening of
April 15th.
Jim Cota, Indianapolis Business Journal reporter, wrote “Young or
old, if your privacy settings aren’t carefully controlled, you’re not
only exposing your own information, you could be exposing your
friends’ as well. Detective Odier explained it like this: By having tags
on the photos, I can put names with faces. I also know birthdays,
hobbies, interests and - let’s not forget – where you go to school.”

Pasta and Rice
Third Grade Service Project
The third grade students are collecting pasta and rice for an organization
called Second Helpings. This organization uses your donations to feed many
hungry families and social service agencies. Second Helpings works very hard
to eliminate food waste, empower people and rescue prepared and
perishable foods. Pasta and rice are a much needed food item that can go a
long way in feeding many people. There are boxes in the classrooms and also
the main hallway for you to drop off the pasta and rice donations or you can
send the boxes in to school with your children. The third grade will be
working hard to make sure that every room has a place for these donations
and putting signs up throughout the school. Thanking you in advance for
your donations, they go to a very worthy cause.

Ronald McDonald Visits Nativity
On Friday, February 21st, Ronald McDonald visited Nativity’s Prekindergarten
through third graders. Ronald presented a very special show titled, “Book
Time with Ronald McDonald”. The purpose of the program is to encourage
reading, promote the use of libraries, and to care for books properly. The
show inspired students to read, read, read! In the show, Ronald and his
friend, Stoogie, a bookworm, shared their excitement of reading and
introduced many other friends – books! Ronald’s message to all was that
reading is fun and an important part of everyone’s daily routine.
Of course, this is a very familiar message to Nativity students. As of last
Monday, Nativity students have read 78,022,518 words toward our school
goal of 115,000,000 words! What a wonderful testament to our students’
love of reading!

Nativity Catholic School at CYO Music Contest
Nativity Catholic School had a tremendous day at the annual CYO Music Contest held at Bishop Chatard
High School on Saturday, February 15th. Our musicians represented Nativity very, very well.
Instrumental musicians who performed included Kristen Seidle, clarinet solo (second place); TJ LaMarca,
clarinet solo, Carolina Whitaker, oboe solo, and Grace Whitaker, clarinet solo all receiving first place
honors. In addition, Kristen Sitzman and Carolina Whitaker did a mixed instrument duet (clarinet and oboe)
also receiving a first place.
Mr. Knott, our band director, is very proud of the performances of our musicians at contest. We had more
instrumental musicians participate in the contest than from any other of the ten schools where he teaches.
We had nine vocal solos all earning first place superior ratings. Our fifth grade students really performed
well for their first time at contest. They included solos by Austin Lines and Jamie Mahin.
We had two sixth grade soloists who did a fantastic job. Sarah Miller and Sophie Prusa represented us well.
Our seventh grade soloists included Hannah Cenkner, Katie Minton, Samantha Payson, and Sarah Wiley.
Each of these performances was awesome.
Our lone eighth grade soloist was Cassie Petroff who also did a tremendous job.
We had two duets both receiving first place honors. Ben Minton (4th) and Jacob Sitzman (5th) wowed their
judges with “I Won’t Grow Up.” They were particularly complimented on the motions the boys fit to their
song and their stage presence. Hannah Cenkner and Samantha Payson made up our fantastic seventh
grade duet singing “What Is This Feeling?” from “Wicked.”
We had two trios placing first: fifth graders Jillian Hagerty, Christina Kurz, and Veronica Phillips scored a
huge win with “Matchmaker” from “Fiddler on the Roof.” The girls dressed in costume and did their own
choreography as well. We also had a beautiful performance of “The Water Is Wide” by seventh grader
Katie Minton singing with Melissa Kurz and Kristen Sitzman, 8th. It was a very challenging piece of music
with tight harmonies. Their judge was very impressed by how well they sang the difficult piece.
And our Middle School Choir performed very well in the Large Ensemble category! There were more choirs
in the competition this year than ever before, but our choir performed well under pressure. Singing “Touch
the Sky,” from the movie “Brave,” we were complimented both on our great sound and our choreography
and stage presence. The choir also received a first place honor.
Congratulations to all of our superior music students! Your hard work really paid off!
