Health All laser Z-LASIK Debuts at the Braverman Eye Center: South Florida doctors get their first look at it BY DAVID UDOFF AVENTURA DIGEST The Braverman Eye Center is located at: 1935 East Hallandale Beach Boulevard. Hallandale beach, FL 33009 (305) 374-8694 • (954) 458-2112 • www.bravermaneyecenter.com Ophthalmologists, optometrists and former LASIK patients mixed education and fun at an inaugural party showcasing the new state-of-the-art Ziemer LDV femtosecond laser at the Braverman Eye Center in Hallandale Beach. Guests enjoyed delicious catered food, toured the beautiful facility, chatted with colleagues, learned about this latest high-tech addition to the Braverman Eye Center surgical suite, and heard directly from patients about their very successful surgeries. The evening included an educational forum and the eye doctors who attended the Ziemer Laser party also had an opportunity to try their own hand at using the femtosecond laser to create the LASIK flap on animal eyes and to talk with Ziemer officials. NEXT GENERATION LASER Z-LASIK is an all-laser, painless LASIK surgery. The Ziemer technology works without any blade, replacing the older microkeratome blade. During all laser Z- LASIK, the patient lies on a table connected to the laser. Dr. Braverman looks through a powerful microscope at the patient’s eye and uses the Ziemer laser to create a smooth partial thickness flap in the tissues of the cornea. He lifts up the flap and reshapes the surface of the eye with the Ladarvision excimer laser using CustomCornea and then puts the flap back down. Both eyes can be done at the same sitting. While Dr. Braverman is operating, a sophisticated computer screen projects an image of the eye. The patient remains awake and relaxed, though a sedative can be given if desired. Dr. Braverman gently talks with patients throughout the entire surgery to reassure them. No two eyes are the same, and the Ladarvision excimer laser uses a CustomCornea wavefront treatment for the proper shaping of the cornea of each individual’s eye. This innovative technology, using a tracking system that follows the patient’s eye 4,000 times per second, is a major breakthrough in ophthalmology science and medicine. In fact, this tracking system is the only tracking system voted into the United States Science Hall of Fame! The biggest concern of patients is that they will not be able to hold their eye still, but using this tracking system, the patient’s eye is held completely steady with no discomfort to the patient. The award-winning tracker keeps the eye steady, and neither the patient nor Dr. Braverman has to be concerned about unwanted eye movements. Dr. Braverman stated, “Now, while still using the Ladarvision CustomCornea technology, we can add the Ziemer Laser technology to the total LASIK procedure package. With solid state components, it uses much less energy to create the LASIK flap than it’s predecessor, the IntraLase laser. The Ziemer laser is very quiet and easy on the eye.” Less energy means less inflammation after the surgery. In fact, the day after surgery, eyes done with this next generation technology do not even look like they have been operated on! “I have been doing LASIK ever since the FDA approved it in 1996,” Dr. Braverman said. “In fact, I was the first doctor to do LASIK in Broward County, doing my first six eyes the day the FDA approved the procedure. This procedure has progressed dramatically since that time to a procedure that is painless and all laser. We no longer need razor blades to cut the eye!” Each patient’s eye has a unique corneal fingerprint that is different from any other patient’s corneal fingerprint. Dr. Braverman explained, “We are now able to use these unique fingerprints to treat each eye with a custom wavefront treatment that is highly specific for that eye’s corneal fingerprint.” The procedure is now so good that many eye doctors are calling the final result High Definition Vision. Dr. Braverman said, “Depending on your prescription and whether you desire correction for distance or near vision problems, the custom wavefront all laser procedures can almost guarantee a 20/20 vision outcome. In fact, in one recent study, if you were nearsighted, you had a 94% chance of seeing 20/20 or better.” Rosemary Hartford, Refractive Surgery Coordinator at the Braverman Eye Center, commented, “We have different eye specialists here who cover most of the sub-specialty fields in ophthalmology, but Dr. Braverman is the only doctor who does the next generation all laser Z-LASIK surgery.” Dr. Stephen Morris, an optometrist, and his wife, Loretta, both attended the Ziemer party and educational forum. Dr. Morris said, “I am the team eye doctor for the University of Miami. Dr. Braverman and I have been friends for many years, and I refer patients to him. I have trusted him to do LASIK on my wife, my children and myself.” Dr. Melody Leon, another guest at the educational forum and a recent graduate of Nova Southeastern University, is doing her residency at the Braverman Eye Center. She said, “I was an undergraduate in biology and then went to graduate school for optometry for a total of eight years post-graduate education. I came to the Braverman Eye Center for my post-graduate residency because it has such a wonderful reputation among eye doctors around the country for providing excellent eye care.” Another guest was Dr. Judi Schaffer, a past president of both the Broward County and Palm Beach County Optometric Associations. She commented that the reason she refers to Dr. Braverman is that even though he is an excellent LASIK surgeon, he also offers other forms of refractive eye surgery, “If the patient is a better candidate for another form of refractive eye surgery, Dr. Braverman will be honest and offer the other options to the patient. He is not only a LASIK surgeon; he offers all the various safe and FDA-approved refractive eye surgery options that are available today for the patient interested in getting rid of their glasses or contact lenses.“ Dr. Braverman is a Voluntary Assistant Clinical Professor at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute and an Adjunct Associate Clinical Professor at the Nova Southeastern School of Optometry. An initial LASIK screening consultation is free and can be scheduled by calling Rosemary, the refractive surgery coordinator, at 1-888-954-LASIK or 954-458-2112.
