    Power

    Laser power measured in Milliwatts

Older unit 10mW to 30mW New machines 100mW or 200mW

    Measurement must be average

    power.

    Energy

Energy is the measurement ofpower over a period of time.

    Energy = Power X Time Energy Joules(J) = (W) X (sec)

    1 Joule = 1Watt (W) X 1 second

    (sec)

  • 8/14/2019 Laser High-Tec 6 July Warren Green

    16/42

    Energy Density

Energy Density (E.D) measured as Joules per cm2

Energy Density (E.D) = Power (W)X time (sec) / Area of beam (cm2)

Or Joules (J) / Area of beam (cm2)

    E.g 2J / 0.16cm2 = 12.5J /cm2

    How does it work?

Visible red light absorbed withinmitochondria this increases the

    production of ATP (adenosine-tri-phosphate)

Infrared light absorbed at the cell

membrane which in turn has anphotophysical effect on the cellmembrane (ca + + channels) and

    transfer of light energy tomitochondria.

    Benefits

    Rapid cell growth.

    Faster wound healing.

    Increased metabolic activity.

    Reduced fibrous tissueformation. Anti-inflammatoryaction.

    Increased vascular activity.

    Stimulated nerve function.
