*** Sunday Collection *** Thank you for your support!

“We must offer God the first fruits of his creation, as Moses said: You will not come empty-handed into the presence of the Lord your God.” (St. Irenaeus)

How much should I give? Faithful Catholics are ex-pected to give to the Lord with a grateful heart. The amount is meant to be a sacrifice -- not what is conven-ient or easy. For those who are working, a minimum amount is one hour’s household pay per week.

You can request envelopes by completing a “Supple-mental Envelope” (available in the pews) or make regular or one time contributions by credit card, checking or sav-ings by using the “Donate” button on our website header.

Through January 3, 2016

An Invitation to Couples Married Outside the Church

We invite all Catholics who were married outside the Church to consider beginning a process of preparation to have their marriages blessed and recognized by the Church. The name of this process is “Convalidation.”

We will have a Marriage Convalidation Workshop on Saturday, February 13, 2016 from 8:45 am – 5:00 pm. Registration can be made by calling Monica in our Parish Office.

We invite couples interested in Convalidation to contact Fr. Paul to meet with him prior to the February 13th date. Please call the Parish Office for an appointment time.

Seven Steps to Convalidation:

1. Contact the local parish for an appointment to meet with the pastor to discuss the process. (If there is a prior mar-riage bond, please let him know since this will require additional time.)

2. Obtain a new copy of the baptismal record for each of the Catholic parties from the church of baptism. 3. Complete the necessary paperwork with the pastor or his delegate. 4. Attend a Marriage Convalidation Workshop. 5. Determine the date, time and most suitable type of service. 6. Celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation as part of the process of preparation. Quite often, it may have been years

since the last confession. The form and words are not important for Confession; it is what is in the heart that counts. 7. Plan a joyful get-together that will follow the liturgical blessing to celebrate the Church’s recognition of the mar-

riage.

TOGETHER IN MISSION 2016

Though we are many, we are one! Although the Church of Los Angeles is large, the largest in the United States, our strength lies not in our numbers, but in our compassion and

ability to respond. Together in Mission, the Annual Archdiocesan Appeal, is the best way to reach out to needy parishes and schools in our Archdiocesan family. Together in Mission directly benefits more than 500,000 of our Catholic brethren in 80 parishes and 63 schools, and ensures that they remain open as centers of faith and hope for communities in need.

Many of you may have already received your 2016 Pledge Form in the mail and are in the process of making a pledge for 2016. Thank you! During all the Masses next weekend, we will conduct an in-pew process to make sure that all people of goodwill have an opportunity to participate in.

Please see the Together in Mission insert in today’s bulletin to learn more.

May God bless you for your generous response and support. Fr. Paul PS – visit our website www.ssfp.org under news/announcements for additional resources and the Together in Mission Video narrated by Archbishop Gomez.

Martin Luther King Holiday January 18th

Mass will be celebrated at 8:15 am

I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its

creed: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.”

I have a dream that my 4 little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.

I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalt-ed, every hill and mountain shall be made low, and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed and all shall see it to-gether. ~ This is our hope. This is our faith.

Anointing of the Sick January 16/17

after all Masses

This Sacrament is for all who are ill, advanced in age, or preparing for surgery.

Please pray for the repose of the soul of Andre Duval Bayle, broth-er of Emile Bayle of our parish. May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace.

SURPRISES Life is full of surprises, some pleasant, some not. The scriptures are filled with stories of God’s surprises crop-ping up when they are least expected: younger children obtaining the inheritance; the lowliest being seated high-est up; an itinerant preacher, killed like a criminal, exalt-ed to eternal, heavenly glory. Anybody who has planned a wedding or similar event knows that they are filled with opportunities for surprises. For the bridegroom in today’s Gospel story, who has no direct contact with Jesus, the pleasant sur-prise came because somebody else paid attention and had faith in Jesus. We may think that the point of today’s familiar story of the wedding at Cana is that when we have faith in Je-sus, our lives will be pleasantly changed. A Christian, however, needs to have a broader perspective and realize that to have faith in Christ means that somebody’s life—not necessarily our own—will be surprised for the better. Copyright © J.
