SAMPLE

Through laser bacterial reduction, your hygienist is able to destroy the bacteria that cause inflammation, soreness, redness, bleeding and periodontal disease. The circling motion of the laser within the surrounding gum pocket can drastically reduce the harmful bacteria that can affect our dental and overall health. Around one tooth with an inflamed periodontal pock-et, there are billions of bacteria. By treating the area with a laser, the bacterial counts around that tooth will shrink from the billions down to hundreds within seconds. Over the next several weeks, the bacterial levels will slowly grow back towards their original levels. With proper home care, you can provide opportunity for the area to heal during this time - the surrounding gum tissue will reattach and pockets will begin to shrink.

THE MOUTH-BODY RELATIONSHIPOpening your mouth is somewhat like cracking open the hood of your car. An expert taking a quick look can get a good sense of what’s working, what’s not, and what should be tuned up regularly to keep your body’s systems up and running at their best. Your teeth and gums speak volumes about your well-being.

When there’s an underlying condition at play - more than 90% of systemic conditions such as heart disease are linked to symptoms in the mouth - your dentist can draw an important connection between your oral health and your overall health. Please refer to the diagram on the right for examples of the mouth-body connection.

A BREAKDOWN OF PERIODONTAL DISEASEWhen bacteria in your mouth accumulate along the gum line, the gums can become infected. When this happens, the gums will detach, creating a periodontal pocket. Normal pocket depths are between 1-3 mm. Pockets greater than 3mm can not be cleaned with rou-tine brushing or flossing. If left untreated, gum disease will spread to the underlying bone of the teeth, causing them to become loose, and could ultimately lead to tooth loss. Regular visits to the dentist, coupled with scaling, root debridement and detoxification and laser assisted periodontal therapy, can fix the diseased gums before they spread. People with deep pockets will often notice persistent bad breath.
