For us, change comes in the form of Connie Hettinga of Coldwell Banker. “We’re pretty lucky,” Connie tells us, just a week after her installation as President-Elect of the Realtors Association of New Mexico, or RANM. “Our diverse economy fuels our long- term growth.” Where else but Las Cruces can one find a largely bilingual population, a growing tax base, a high number of advanced-degree scientists and engineers, and a hardworking, small town populace with sleeves rolled, ready to make it work? While we hear news of families buried financially beneath homes they cannot sell, Las Cruces builders struggle to keep step with growing demand. Yet RANM has not seen a Las Cruces president since Bill Peterson, Connie’s mentor, back in 1991. What Does a Local President of RANM Mean to You? As it turns out, it means great deal. RANM takes an active role in Santa Fe over such vital issues as eminent domain, water rights, and transfer taxes. “We actively lobby in the interest of the homeowner and homebuyer,” Connie tells us. Yet she notes that only 175 association members out of over 8,000 statewide attended the RANM convention in Albuquerque a few weeks ago. Becoming a REALTOR® classes start in November

Las Cruces, NM – Las Cruces Home BuildersAssociation (LCHBA) to provide a Thanksgivingmeal for 200 families in Las Cruces. Annually,the LCHBA Community Service Committeepacks boxes with all the grocery items needed fora Thanksgiving dinner, including turkeys, pump-kin pie, even margarine and delivers the boxes todisadvantaged families at the Families & YouthCenter and MacArthur Elementary School. In2007, the Community Service Committee provid-ed a combined total of 120 boxes to the organiza-tions. The committee raises funds for thisendeavor through its raffle at the LCHBA month-ly membership luncheons. They also rely ondonations of money from the general membershipand community businesses. The committee isstill in the process of raising funds and solicitingempty copy paper boxes for delivery of the items.$50 is all it takes to sponsor one family. Thisyears’ delivery will take place on Tuesday,November 25, 2008. The Las Cruces Home Builders Association(LCHBA) is a non-profit trade association and itrepresents the residential home building industryin our region. Its designated membership areaincludes all of Dona Ana County as well as theTruth or Consequences and Deming areas. TheLCHBA is a local association chapter and is affil-iated with the state chapter, the New MexicoHome Builders Association (NMHBA). Both theLCHBA and the NMHBA are part of a nationalfederation, the National Association of HomeBuilders (NAHB). The LCHBA has over 500members, the state association has over 3,000 andthe national federation has over 250,000 membersnationwide. Members of our local association areelected annually to serve as directors and/or offi-cers of both the state and national groups.

Of the 550 plus members of the LCHBA,approximately one-third are licensed builders andthe remaining members are subcontractors, sup-pliers of materials, and providers of services. Allof the members have a vested interest in the suc-cess of home building in our community. We allwork together to provide the community's hous-ing.

A fourteen-member board of directors, a five-member executive committee, and executive offi-cer manage the LCHBA. There are over 15 com-mittees, task forces, forums, and councils. The

LCHBA's activities are planned and managed byvolunteer members and a staff of five.

The LCHBA’s purpose is to protect theAmerican dream of home ownership. We have thefollowing mission statement:

Chartered in 1959, the Las Cruces HomeBuilders Association is comprised of members ofthe building industry and its affiliates. As thevoice of the building industry, we serve our mem-bers and the community by:

• promoting balanced economic development; • providing education; and • promoting professionalism. As a regulated industry, the LCHBA takes pride

in working with local, state, and national govern-ments in shaping fair and equitable policies thatwill help maintain sensible growth and help over-come the barriers to affordable housing.

The LCHBA strives to provide education andother professional benefits for its members.Dozens of courses in business management andconstruction are available to members throughNAHB. Members are able to purchase affordableworkers' compensation insurance coveragethrough the NMHBA. The LCHBA offers a vari-ety of informational seminars to its members tokeep them informed about the latest regulationsand products.

Several major events are held by the LCHBAeach year and provide multiple benefits to theassociation, its members and to the public.Through the annual Home Improvement andLifestyle Show, Spring Showcase of Homes, andFall Parade of Homes, members have an opportu-nity to spotlight their products and services. Thecommunity benefits by seeing what the latestofferings are in home building and home remod-eling. Because the LCHBA is a non-profit associ-ation, it must raise over 60 percent of its operat-ing revenue and it does this in part through theseassociation sponsored community events.

The LCHBA over the years has also been veryactive in supporting community needs. The con-struction of the 48-Hour House in 1990 benefitedthe homeless community. The joint venture withthe city in constructing Veteran's Park on the EastMesa was a huge success. The Fallfest Auctionhas enabled the LCHBA to contribute over$75,000 to the United Way, September 11th Fund,and Mesilla Valley Habitat for Humanity. Inaddition, there have been many other projects thatmembers have contributed to individually, suchas the construction of Unidad Park, and renova-tions of various community service buildings.

Institute (REI) will begin the fall Pre-Licensing

Broker Basics classes on Monday, November 10

at 6 p.m. Sue Williams, lead instructor with over

five years experience, teaches the 30 hour cours-

es in an evening and weekend format.

Broker Basics focuses intensely on New

Mexico specific topics. The following topics are

covered: brokerage relationships, forms, form

application, property management, Real Estate

Licensing Act, New Mexico Real Estate

Commission Rules and Regulations, and other

New Mexico Real Estate laws.

Other classes required by the New Mexico Real

Estate Commission are Real Estate Principles and

Practice and Real Estate Law. Broker Basics

classes will be located at: 141 R. Roadrunner

In fact, Exit Realty Horizonshas helped build ten homes withHabitat since 2005, includingfour scheduled for completion in2008. The latest groundbreakingevent at Sierra Bella Placeincluded a breakfast, contests,
