ThesuccessfulSport&HealthyActiveLiving(SHAL)studentwillmaintainaminimumB+(75%)averageinhis/hercoreacademiccourses. He/shehasandwillcontinuetodevelopeffectivetimemanagementandorganizationalskills.Thestudentenjoysthechallengespresentedbyarigorouscurricularandco-curricularprogramandisconfidentinhis/herabilitytoachieveexcellenceinbothpursuits,simultaneously.ThesuccessfulSport&HealthyActiveLivingstudentisfocusedongoalsthatextendbeyondtheirsecondaryschoolexperiences.
CentralComponentsoftheSport&HealthyActiveLivingProgram
1.AdmissionRequirementsTobeconsideredfortheSport&HealthyActiveLivingProgram,thestudentathletemustmeetthefollowingcriteria:
- haveaminimumB+(75%)averagefromelementaryschoolandbeenteringintothe
academic/universitypathwayinhighschool- beactivelyparticipatinginoneormoresportingactivities(individualand/orteambased)- trainaminimumof10hoursperweekinhis/hersport- maintainatleasta75%averagetoremainintheprogramatLasalleSecondarySchool- aninterviewwiththeSHALcoordinatororschooladministrationmayberequired
2.Sport&HealthyActiveLivingCertificateStudentswillearnaminimumof10creditsidentifiedaspartoftheSport&HealthyActiveLivingProgram.Inadditionstudentsmustcomplete260hoursofvolunteerservice(60hoursofcommunityservice/200hoursofteamparticipation),astudentportfolio,andaseminarintheirgraduatingyear.
3.ServiceStudentsintheSport&HealthyActiveLivingProgramarerequiredtolearnfromdoingrealtasksbeyondtheclassroom. Specifically,thestudentwillcomplete140hoursofvolunteerserviceasoneofthe3certificaterequirements. LasalleSecondarySchoolStudentServiceswillworkwithstudentstosecureopportunitiestoservethecommunityasameansofenhancingnot-for-profitactivitiesintheregion.Serviceactivitiesarevariedandshouldconnecttothestudent’sexperiencesintheSport&Healthy,ActiveLivingprogram.
4.StudentPortfoliosTheportfolioisalivingdocumentwhichchroniclesthestudent’scurricularandco-curricularevolution.StudentportfolioswillcontainsamplesofstudentworkandachievementswhileintheSport&HealthyActiveLivingProgram.Thepurposeoftheportfolioistoprovidedataforthecontinualassessmentandevaluationofstudentlearning. Inaddition,theportfoliowillserveasavaluabletoolforstudentswhowillbeseekingadmissionintopost-secondaryprogramsrelatedtosport&healthy,activeliving.
Portfoliosmayinclude,butarenotlimitedto,learningobjectives,selfassessmentandreflection,lettersofendorsementandexamplesofstudent’sworkandachievements.Inaddition,theportfoliowillassistteachersandsupervisorsinassessinghis/hergrowthanddevelopmentintheprogram.

5.HonoursSeminar
Thethirdandfinalcomponentisaseminarduringwhichthestudentwillpresentaresearchtopicoftheirchoicethatisconnectedtooneormoreaspectsofsportandhealthy,activelivingtoapanelincludingtheprogramleader,schooladministration,SHALstudentsandparents. Theseminarisaself-directedresponsibilitythatwillprovidethestudentwithextensiveexperiencewiththekindofworkbeingdoneatthepost-secondarylevel. Therewillbetwocomponentstothishonoursseminar;theportionembeddedwithinthecurriculumcomponentofoneoftheirgrade12coursesandthefinalpresentationoftheprojectattheendoftheschoolyear. Althoughthisfinalcertificaterequirementiscenteredaroundindependentresearch,thestudentwillworkcloselywiththesubjectteacherandSHALprogramleaderthroughouttheplanning,research,writingandpresentationstagesofthehonoursseminar.Presentations willtakeplaceintheschoollibraryinearlyMayoftheirgraduatingyearusingaconferencestyleposterpresentation.Studentswillbeprovidedwithabackboardontowhichtheirposterscanbedisplayed.Avarietyofvisualaidsareencouragedtosupplementtheposterdisplay.
