Ode To Licensing

Exactly twenty years ago an editorial in Locksmith Ledger discussed the issue of licensing. It seemed to be a big issue at the

time. Proponents felt that licensing would keep out handymen and part-timers. Licensing would also be a way of assuring the

public that a licensed locksmith had achieved a certain locksmith skill level and was capable of providing the security services

required.

Opponents viewed licensing as government intrusion. Locksmiths would have to take time away from business in order to pass

necessary tests and then pay for the privilege of having a license. According to opponents, it was a money grab by government

while providing little, if any, advantages for locksmiths.

After twenty years the locksmith industry has had very little movement in the licensing debate. According to the Associated

Locksmiths of America (ALOA) there are fifteen states and three individual counties which have enacted licensing of

locksmiths. Seventy percent of our fifty states have no locksmith licensing. This record is nothing to be proud of.

During the same twenty-year period we have seen the expansion of big box hardware stores plus the movement away from

mechanical locks and towards electronic security products. Both of these events negatively affect people working in the

locksmith business. Today there are several alternative choices where the public can obtain security-based services and products.

Locksmith licensing is not the answer to every problem. Licensing should not be seen as protection against competition for

existing locksmith businesses. Licensing should be seen as a constructive way to require neophytes to pass a locksmith basics test

instead of learning on the job at the expense of customers.

Many employees behind key machine counters at big box stores appear to have little knowledge of what they are doing. Think

of the value to our industry if every one of those big box key cutters had to be a licensed locksmith. Until we can speak with

one voice, this will never happen.

DALLAS, Jan. 3, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Until now, concealment furniture

with its bland design and lack of real security has been a mostly

underwhelming option for gun owners. Gun safes, on the other hand, are

plenty secure--but they're largely designed to be out of sight (and often out

of reach). Now, thanks to Forgesafe Furniture LLC, concealment furniture

has been completely reimagined, redesigned, and re-engineered for security

and style.

Best of 2017: Automotive Locksmithing

by Steve Young On Dec 4, 2017

When I was asked to write a review of some of the best new automotive tools introduced during

2017, three tools came to mind immediately. I have owned two of those tools for most of the

year, and they have both saved me time and are paying for themselves on a daily basis. The third

is only now becoming available, after being promoted for most of the year, but I feel certain that

it will soon become one of my favorite tools as well. Let’s take a quick look at all three tools.

Asbestos Can Be Costly for Locksmiths

by Gale Johnson On Nov 15, 2017

Our family locksmith business was given a lucrative assignment last summer to install a dozen exit devices in a school building.

This was an older school building. Inner hallway doors had served as passage doors for many years and the only hardware on

the doors were push and pull plates. The local fire department was now requiring exit hardware to be installed to keep the

doors latched.

Parts had been ordered and were ready in stock. The day finally came when school recess began and our workers could enter

the building for the installations. However, as the first door was being drilled, our workers noticed a white power substance

coming from inside the drilled hole. An immediate thought was that the substance may be asbestos. All activity was halted

and the mysterious powder was sent to a local testing lab for analysis.

As suspected, the white powder was determined to be asbestos. Since these doors were interior doors and contained no fire

door labels, or labels of any kind, our workers made an early assumption to accept the job without actually probing the

interior of one of the doors. It was an expensive lesson in how to lose time and income.

Valuable properties of asbestos were first discovered in the mid 1800s. Asbestos is light weight, heat resistant and has strength

characteristics which made it desirable to be mixed with concrete, added to roof shingles and wall board and used as

insulation around heating pipes.

Any commercial building built before 1980 may contain asbestos materials. It is most important for locksmiths to check

before drilling into old doors as indicated above. Another prime asbestos location is the inner doors in old safes. Cement

containing asbestos may have been used to insulate contents against heat during a fire.

Treat any product which might contain asbestos with caution. Beware of drilling holes in old doors or ancient safes

Is Assa Abloy's acquisition of August Home a sign of bigger things to come?

by Joel Griffin Oct 19 2017

Assa Abloy on Thursday announced that it has signed an agreement to acquire August Home, one of the

leading providers of smart locks and smart home access products and services. Based in San Francisco,

August Home primarily focuses on developing solutions for the do-it-yourself (DIY) market.

According to Thanasis Molokotos, executive vice president of Assa Abloy and head of the Americas division,

the acquisition of August Home will strengthen the company’s residential product portfolio through the

addition of smart locks, video doorbells and solutions for home delivery.

“August is an entrepreneurial company that is innovating in the traditional lock space by enhancing access

control through software and service experiences,” Molokotos explains. “It is a strong complement to our

current focus.”

In addition, Molokotos says that August Home is very synergistic with Assa Abloy’s Yale brand and that their

products will greatly complement one another moving forward. “August’s focus is primarily the DIY channel

with retrofit locks that offer an exceptional user and software experience,” he says. “Through the Yale brand,

Assa Abloy’s focus is on full replacement locks that are connected and served by the professionally installed

channel.”

Founded by Jason Johnson and Yves Behar, August Home has developed three generations of smart door

locks and two generations of video doorbells, placing them among the leaders in the smart home industry

when it comes to technology, partnerships and retail sales. For example, the company has entered into recent

partnerships with some of the world’s leading technology companies, including Amazon, Apple, Google,

Nest, HomeAway and Airbnb. Last November, MONI Smart Security announced that it would also make the

August Smart Lock and August Connect Wi-Fi bridge available to its residential and commercial customer

base.

TIPS AND TRICKS

I recently had the opportunity to travel to China and to visit some of the manufactures that are currently available in South Africa We are all aware of the copy machines and equipment that we usually get from places like China, but I was pleasantly surprised to see that this is changing and that some new innovative companies are investing into their own R&D departments. With some new ideas and cutting edge technology. Most of these companies are located in Shenzhen. It is a vibrant city located about 30km from Hong Kong in mainland China. The city is fairly new as cities go and was established 30 years ago.

Here you can see what a Chinese electronics market looks like. A building like this would generally

have up to 6 floors that look like this.

We found the people to be very friendly and most people able to help out even if it was in Basic

English. Taxis and public transport were well priced and very efficient.

Page 17: LASA NEWS Januarylasa.co.za/Pages/Blog/2882/2882.pdf · public that a licensed locksmith had achieved a certain locksmith skill level and was capable of providing the security services

So in the interest of sharing I will cover three of the bigger companies we visited and give a short

description of some of the new machines they are selling and developing.

I have also given a short description of one machine from each company.

Key DIY (Establish in 2009)

This company manufactures the KD range of machines and remotes.

They use a device which allows you to create remotes for different manufactures

of vehicles onto their remotes. This allows locksmiths to stock less remote and cover a much larger

range. Currently they have over 1000 remotes in the database.

They have a large amount of key blades that are interchangeable with their remote range. They also

offer remotes with onboard chips that you can precode to the specific vehicle you are working on.

KD900

This unit allows multiple functions from remote

generation and copying to frequency checking.

The unit can be used with PC software or as a

standalone.

Page 18: LASA NEWS Januarylasa.co.za/Pages/Blog/2882/2882.pdf · public that a licensed locksmith had achieved a certain locksmith skill level and was capable of providing the security services

OBDstar (20 years in the business)

This company manufactures a range of OBD programmers and also offer versions

with OBD diagnostics. They recently acquired Xtool to strengthen their market share in China.

There machines are not token based and allow a well priced alternative to all the machines we are

seeing enter the market currently.

Units also allow a small amount of eeprom work for pulling pins and adding key data directly into

immo and ecu boxes.

A interesting note these units are often seen in orange. The orange units are sold via internet

channels and the green via local distribution channels

Keymaster DP (X300DP)

This unit is a tablet based and allows for a Bluetooth connections

to OBD socket.

The standard unit comes with basic Diagnostic features that allow

fault checking and clearing on most vehicles.

This unit already allows for Toyota G system reset and H system

Add.R&D is currently being done on BMW CAS and Merc EIS

systems.

VVDI (Established in 2014)

This company manufactures the VVDI range of machines. It was

one of the biggest companies we visited and we only got to see

one of their R&D facilities.

They a clearly taking aim at the bigger suppliers in the world and

offer a high quality product and very reasonable prices.

Page 19: LASA NEWS Januarylasa.co.za/Pages/Blog/2882/2882.pdf · public that a licensed locksmith had achieved a certain locksmith skill level and was capable of providing the security services

VVDI keytool

This unit is a standalone cloning device with loads of extra features. It copies to their own chips that

are really well priced. Currently allowing for 4C, 4D ID46 and ID48 to be released next year

The unit also does remote testing and can also be used for remote generation.

The unit also allows for remotes to be virginized (Old remotes can be reused).

This is done via either adapters or inline connection to remote.
