PRESENTATION ABSTRACT Dross generation has always been a costly issue for the electronics assembly industry. At least half, and in many cases, much more than 75%of the metal (solder) purchased for electronic manufacture is wasted as it becomes tied up in dross. With the advent of lead free solders the moderate economic pain of dross generation has be-come acute. A process introduced to the industry in the last few years cures virtually all problems caused by dross. This presentation will show the true cost of dross, including metal replace-ment, loss of efficiency, and safety as well as environmental issues clearly demonstrate a need for a solution to this problem. In ad-dition to dross elimination the process has been shown in the lab to reduce tempera-tures for wave and selective soldering and to improve wetting. Collaborating beta test as well as lab test data will be presented along with initial actual production results. In addition to answering the techni-cal questions, why and how the “economics of dross” will be examined and a specific and significant cost savings scenario will be presented.

May 2012
Here we go to start the 2nd quarter of 2012. The economy is trying its
hardest to pick up. Wall Street is doing its share by being up around 10% for
the first quarter. We hope your company is also in the black.
On even years SMTA Headquarters invites chapter officers to partici-
pate in a training forum near beautiful downtown Minneapolis Minnesota dur-
ing the month of March. The weekend meeting is held across the street from
Mall of America and consists of training the newer chapter officers (or a re-
fresher for more experienced officers) in all aspects of the SMTA. Saturday
evening the group meets at the Mall and has dinner, maybe some bowling,
goes to the water park or gets a month of exercising done by walking the 4
stories and 400 shops available. This year we asked our 2 newest chapter offi-
cers Matt & Sisto to take the trip. They both made it back safety Sunday after-
noon with a better understanding of what the SMTA has to offer and also how
to disseminate that information to our chapter.
Since our chapter had a good year with it’s fund raising, including our
1st Tech Expo last November, we donated monies to SMTA National who in
turn invited Michael Cuong Nguyen, a SMTA student member from the Univer-
sity of Texas in Arlington. He wrote us a very nice letter expressing how grate-
ful he was for the experience.
Because of our fund raising, we also lowered the May Presentation
Meeting price for members from $25.00 to $15.00, just to say thank you for
your on going commitment to the association.
We are currently seeking speakers for September 20th, October 18th,
as well as 2 more presentator’s for our 2nd Annual Tech Forum which will be
held this year at the Irvine Marriott. At this location, we will have 9,000 square
feet of space as opposed to the 6,000 square feet we out grew last year. If you
have a subject in mind please let us know and we will get right on it.
We are also looking for volunteers to write a monthly Technical Article as well
as someone to interview our members and provide a Monthly Member Profile.

LA/OC SMTA TECHNICL ARTICLELA/OC SMTA TECHNICL ARTICLE JAPANESE GREEN TECHNOLOGIES FOR SMT
PART I Daido Sawairi, Corporate Officer
Sawa Corporation Hirakata, Osaka, Japan [email protected]
Michelle Ogihara, Senior Sales Manager Seika Machinery, Inc. Torrance, CA, USA
Japan has the world’s tenth-largest population at 127 mil-lion people in an area that fits within the state of California. Sixty-percent of this terrain is covered with mountains and is uninhabitable. Japan has the most densely populated liv-ing territories in the world. Given these confines in terms of space and available resources and concerns over growing pollution issues after the booming economy developing since World War II, the Japanese government introduced several environmental protection laws in the 1970’s cover-ing urban air pollution, waste management, nature conser-vation, climate change and chemical management among others. In terms of the electronics assembly market, there are varie-ties of green technology products developed in Japan to address some of the concerns and limits if not driven by the legislation above, than upon popular consumer demand. For example, solvents have been used as useful cleaning chemicals for an extended period of time in SMT. How-ever, currently, non-solvent use technologies have devel-oped due to the concerns of VOC emissions and pollutant control. One such environmentally-friendly and non-VOC cleaning solvent developed is alkaline-electrolyzed water which shows good cleaning performance for removing flux, oil, and grease. Alcohol-based or organic chemicalbased sol-vents are widely used for cleaning assembly parts that con-tain flux in SMT factories. Safety and environmental con-cerns lead assemblers to avoid using solvents in general. Alkaline-electrolyzed water has been used to efficiently clean metal stencils, carrier pallets, metal parts used in re-flow and other parts. Cleaning equipment that is capable of removing finger-prints and other contaminants on wafers, semiconductor packages, and so on have been developed. Water is the ONLY cleaning agent in this process. Combined with ultra-sonic technology, pure water carries out soil from these ma-terials readily.
PCB magazine racks usually attract and contain dust in most factories. A leading magazine rack supplier in Japan has developed another cleaning system that only utilizes water for keeping this product clean. Considering the rack heat resistively, the warmed water gently but thoroughly is sprayed on and removes the dust particles. In consideration of keeping a clean process and lowering PPM rate, it is important to control dust floating about in factory environ-ments. Another unique cleaning system does not require any liq-uid to clean. Resin films remove flux on carrier pallets. Absolutely no solvent or water is required. Chipped resin films strike the surface of the pallets, and the flux is scraped away. After cleaning, the flux and the resin films are collected separately. The resin films are used over re-peatedly in this cleaning process. One solder paste recycling system proposes cost savings and environmental process improvement by washing used and expired solder paste with a special cleaning agent, and collecting and recycling only the solder powder. Chemical treatment is the key to recycling the paste and resulting in the solder powder, which was considered impossible to do in the past. Another solder paste recycling system devel-oped by an equipment manufacturer and an environmen-tally-conscientious OEM recycles 90% of leftover solder paste, heats and separates the metals from the flux and turns it into a solder ingot or bar. This can then be used in the wave soldering process. These unique, green-technology products provide assem-blers with solutions that not only assist the Japanese elec-tronic assembler in saving costs during their process but also are helpful to the environment and can be used glob-ally for the benefit of the industry as a whole. Keywords: green technologies, cleaning, recycling, Japan Sawa Corporation of Japan is a leading manufacturer of ultrasonic cleaning systems throughout Asia. Seika Ma-chinery is a multinational distributor of SMT and ATE equipment from Japan. 14

LA/OC SMTA Member ProfileLA/OC SMTA Member Profile
Sisto is an Orange County native and developed an interest in computer science
during high school and joined the computer team, but was not your typical Egg Head.
He is a bit of a soccer fan and up until his knee surgery he played the sport frequently.
Sisto has always looked forward to watching the next major sporting event. This past
August he came out and enjoyed our LA/OC SMTA Golf Outing and had a wonderful
time.
After high school Sisto decided to serve his country and joined the Marine Corps
as a ground radio repairman. At his first duty station he jumped into the most difficult
support role of maintenance and troubleshooting of VHF Multi-channel communications
employed in the Hawk Missile defense system. This task was instrumental in develop-
ing his initial technical, troubleshooting, ingenuity, and root cause analysis skills. This
also helped with learning leadership and technical expertise that he was able to train
and pass on techniques by defining and developing procedures.
After military service Sisto tried various electronics fields, such as home entertain-
ment and optical vision, but eventually found a permanent stay at Viking. Sisto has
been able to continue with the technical and leadership support in rework processes,
SMT process, new product introduction, and proprietary stack component technology.
Supporting the design and engineering process has provided Sisto the opportunity
to learn manufacturing process engineering, and all his hard work paid off with a pro-
motion the position of Manufacturing Engineering. The SMTA & IPC has been instru-
mental in his learning process. Sisto has made his SMTA membership work for him by
taking advantage of the member networking, educational and tutorial programs, publi-
cations, the SMTA Process Engineer certification program, and the IPC-A-610 and IPC-
7711/7721 certification trainer courses. Sisto continues to educate himself through
SMTA and IPC educational events and hopes his example will motivate others to do the
same.
