The moose head — a 1,500-pound, 7-foot-tall, 59-year-old steel sign — graced various Moose lodges in Lansing for more than 50 years. Most recently, it was retired last year from its post outside Lansing Moose Lodge No. 288 on South Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, where it had stood since 1973. Officials believe only three of its kind exist. An original plan to move it to DeWitt’s Moose Lodge No. 2291 after the Lansing location closed last year was scrapped due to high costs to repair the vintage sign. “We’re sad about it. last week — said he waspleased with the proposaland the board’s reaction toit. The plan follows weeks ofboard and community dis-cussion about the consol-idation of Woodcreek andDwight Rich into the newacademy.

The board had asked forthe plan — and other rec-ommendations for trimmingthe budget — at its April 7meeting.

“This is probably ourmost comprehensive plan,”Wallace said. “We wanted todot our I’s and cross ourT’s and make a presentationthat took in all of the con-versation we heard in previ-ous meetings.”

Board member NicoleArmbruster said she likedthe plan, but had reserva-tions about making a hastydecision.

“This seems like a lot ofdisruption and moving peo-ple around for not savingthat much money,” she said.

However, board memberMyra Ford pointed out thatthe district must do every-thing it can to trim nextyear’s deficit.

Jerry Swartz, presidentof Lansing’s 1,000-memberteachers’ union, said the pro-posal to close Otto is a movein the right direction. How-ever, he said he still wouldlike to see the district closea high school.

Ralph urged the boardto make a decision quickly.Board.

The school administra-tion has announced thatthere will be communitymeetings at two schools nextweek.

The first will be at OttoMiddle School next Tuesdayat 6:30 p.m. and the secondwill be at Bingham Elemen-tary School next Wednesdayat 6 p.m.

The school board is likelyto take action on the recom-mendations during a specialmeeting April 27. That meet-ing is scheduled to start at 7p.m.

the $5,000 to $6,000 repaircost.

Nisse laments not beingable to pay for the restoration, but said fraternal orders havebeen suffering withmembership and costs.

“These clubs have beenhaving a hard time lately,” hesaid. “I would’ve been able torestore it if it were (the late-1980s/early 1990s).”

The placard’s hand-crafteddetail is now a long-lost art inthe signage world, he said.

“To me, that sign isn’tworth anything unless it’son display somewhere forpeople to admire,” Higginssaid. “Otherwise it’s scrapmetal.”

The moose once stuck itshead out in Old Town —sometime between 1952 andthe early 1970s — beforemoving to the lodge on SouthMartin Luther King Jr.Boulevard in 1973, Nisse said. When that building went intoforeclosure last year, Nissewas excited to have it stand

outside the DeWitt lodge, which has no official signmarking its presence.

He phoned Higgins, whospent more than three hoursremoving the placard from itsMLK location.

‘Some local flavor’Swormstedt, whose family

also publishes the century-oldsign industry magazine “Signsof the Times,” will keep thesign from further wear amidthe museum’s collection ofmore than 500 signs.

“It’s always moreinteresting to have the customtouch and have some localflavor,” Swormstedt said. “Wewould never repaint this sign.We like to know the storybehind it.”

Higgins said the historicaspect of the sign makes itmore valuable than its 4-cents-per-pound value at the scrapyard.

“They just don’t make themlike that anymore,” he said.“It’s worth a heck of a lotmore historically andemotionally, too.”

Rod Sanford/Lansing State Journal

An original plan to move it to DeWitt’s MooseLodge No. 2291 after the Lansing locationclosed last year was scrapped due to highcosts to repair the vintage sign.

The sign that declaresCrego Park’s closure hasloomed at the corner of EastMt. Hope Avenue and Au-relius Road for more than20 years.

But that sign will be com-ing down in the next yearor so thanks to a $500,000state grant that will help theonce-polluted park open tothe public.

“I can’t wait to take thatsign off,” said Murdock Je-merson, Lansing’s director of

parks and recreation.“This park has gone

through a lot in terms ofhaving the negative conno-tation of being polluted. Idefinitely want to see itopen again.”

Crego Park — Lansing’slargest park at about

200 acres — is adjacent toPotter Park Zoo, Fenner Na-ture Center and two of thecity’s cemeteries as part ofthe Sycamore Basin.

It’s been closed since 1986when 200 drums of paintsludge and other toxic wastewere found.

$500K to help reopen Crego Park to publicAfter the sludge discov-

ery, FMC Corp. of Phila-delphia agreed to spend $8million to clean up the mess. The Lansing Park Board wasnotified within the past twoyears that the park was suit-able to use, said Ron Lott, amember of the board.

Officials shifted their at-tention to Crego Park afterfailing to receive a state grantin 2009 to update FrancesPark.

The process of reopeningthe park began last spring,

when the city applied for aMichigan Natural ResourcesTrust Fund grant.

$250K from city fundThe grant, coupled with

$250,000 from the city’s parksmillage fund, will fit the landwith a fishing dock, kayak/canoe launch, a boardwalkto give a pathway from the17-acre Fidelity Lake on thepark’s east side to the city’sRiver Trail, and more.

Once the city finds an ar-chitectural engineering firm

and construction companyto work on the project, thehands-on work might not be-gin until September, Jemer-son said.

Motorized boats and oth-er motorized watercraft willnot be allowed in the park,Jemerson said.

The city’s grant applica-tion shows maintenance tothe land is expected to costabout $1,200 annually.

Letters of supportNeighbors of Crego Park

have expressed fears that

opening the park will bringunwanted noise and traffic.

But Lansing resident Mar-cia Thomas, 47, said openingthe park would benefit thecity as a whole.

“I think giving peoplemore access to the parks isa good thing,” said Thomas, who walked along the RiverTrail near the park Thursdayafternoon. “Maybe it will getmore people outdoors andoff the couch.”

Jemerson said he’s re-ceived more letters of sup-port — close to 20 — for thisgrant than any he’s ever ap-plied for.

One of the major sup-porters for the endeavor arefishing enthusiasts, who lookforward to tapping into Fi-delity Lake’s supply of bass, sunfish and bluegill.

The wetlands that makeup a majority of the park willremain untouched, Lott said.

Being in the sixth grade is trau-matic enough. Now imaginebeing in the sixth grade, mov-

ing away from friends you have knownyour entire life, being the new kid in asmall-town school, having a name thatsounds like “anime” (a Japanese car-toon style), being adopted, and havingthe threat of a heritage project loom-ing over your head when you aren’teven sure yet who you are or how youfit in.

These are the problems facing AnnaMei Anderson in a series of middlegrade novels by local author Carol A.Grund. The first book is “Anna Me,Cartoon Girl,” published in 2010 (Pau-

line Kids, ages 8-12). In an attempt tofit in at her new school in Michigan(just down the road from Spartan Sta-dium!), Anna Mei joins a group of girlsknown as the Ponytails.

Grund nimbly weaves the threadsof Anna Mei’s life into a story thatis smoothly paced, quietly comforting, and pleasing to the soul. In Anna Mei,she has created a character that repre-sents both the joys and struggles ofgrowing up. Anna Mei’s story is con-tinued in the sequel, just released in

March. “Anna Mei, Escape Artist” isabout the deepening of her new friend-ships, but also about how friendshipsare tested.

Both of titles are available at theCapital Area District Library. The thirdand final book will be released this fall.

The Downtown Lansing Library, aCapital Area District Library, is locatedat 401 S. Capitol Ave. For informationabout our hours, programs or services, call (517) 367-6363 or visit cadl.org.All branches of CADL will be closedfor Easter on Sunday, April 24.
