Do the “Social Skills” quiz on page 24 together. What are the advantages of having good social skills? Different groups of people expect different kinds of behaviour, and you have to adapt to each group. Mention examples of this, and discuss how to cope with it.

Discuss: What happens next in the story? Do you know the whole “Hunger Games” novel or film? How much of it can you retell? What can we learn from the Hunger Games books and films? Imagine that you are going to demonstrate basic welding to a group of visiting 10th graders. How would you adapt points 1-5 to that situation?

Read aloud this excerpt from Important Events in the History of Industry (page 66):

Discuss: Tell about oil drilling and extraction through the ages (see page 65). What did people use before mineral oil came on the market? How did Samuel Colt get the idea for a gun with a rotating mechanism (i.e. a revolver)? Colt produced his revolvers efficiently - explain how. Tell what you know about modern Ford cars. Read aloud this excerpt from A Drive in the Motor-Car on page 72-73:

Discuss: Describe the cars that were common in the 1920s. What kind of training did Roald Dahl's half-sister have in driving? How fast is 50 mph? And 35 mph?

(1 mile 1.6 km) What caused the accident? Roald Dahl's nose was almost cut off. In a modern car, that would most likely not have happened. Why not? Mention some of the safety equipment that modern cars have. There are strict regulations for how cars can be modified. What are the limits for how a graduate's car (russebil) can be modified and equipped if it is to be approved by the authorities? Describe the driver's education that we have in Norway. Which attitudes and skills does a good driver have?
