Dear Parent: The start of a new school year is an exciting time for students and families. It is also an exciting time for the education sector. We have a lot to be proud of here in British Columbia. Student outcomes continue to improve. Today 15 percent more students are graduating than in 2001. BC’s education system is ranked first in the English-speaking world for outcomes in reading, science and mathematics. Students are finding success in music, in academics, in sports and in every subject in between. But we have to remember our world is changing. Rather than rest on accomplishments—we need to build on our success to make sure your child’s education remains among the best in the world. BC’s new curriculum is how we are going to do that. Our new curriculum will still teach students the basics—reading, writing and math, but in a way that connects them to collaboration, communication and critical thinking skills, which are so important after high school. These are the core skills universities, colleges and employers tell us they are looking for. We are also bringing a new core skill into schools—coding, which teaches students the critical thinking and logical approach crucial for success in tech careers and in almost every other field. We are providing $6 million for teacher training and technology purchases for schools to bring coding and the new curriculum to life. During the last school year, we introduced draft new curriculum for Kindergarten to Grade 9. This year, that curriculum will be fully implemented and draft curriculum will be available for Grades 10–12. Teachers will have the option to provide feedback and use this draft curriculum in their classrooms. While we call it “new” curriculum, it is also a reflection of what has been happening in our classrooms for years. It is the kind of innovation in action that I have seen first-hand, through visits to more than 30 school districts last year.

Changes are also being made to the graduation program. Provincial exams in two core subjects will now be written between Grades 10 and 12, testing the bedrock skills of success—literacy and math. These are the core skills that cut across every subject and are what universities and colleges look at during admissions. And in science and social studies, there will be rigorous classroom-based exams, assessments, tests and projects to measure student progress. Finally, over the coming months we will ask parents like you how you want to hear about your child’s progress in the classroom so you can have input on any changes. We will reach out directly later this fall. Your children will graduate into a changing and exciting world—and the new curriculum will help make sure they are prepared to meet that future head-on and are equipped for success no matter which path they choose. For more details on our curriculum, please visit http://www.curriculum.gov.bc.ca. Langley School District No 35 invites you to participate in a conversation about

Middle School Programming in the District

September 16, 2016 The School District is hosting a Community Information Meeting regarding middle school programming in the District and invites community members to join us.

Wednesday, October 5, 2016 6:30 pm to 8:30pm

Coast Hotel and Convention Centre - Cascades Ballroom (20393 Fraser Highway, Langley)

In May 2016 the Board of Education passed the following motion:

“That the Board of Education requests that staff host informational community meetings, in September 2016, on middle schools.”

At this time, the District Leadership Team would like to engage our community in an educational conversation with respect to implementing a district-wide middle school program. Currently, the District has three middle schools in place with a fourth facility to be converted in Willoughby upon completion of the new high school. The middle school model aligns well with the new Ministry curriculum both in terms of the Personal and Social Responsibility components and Explorations (Careers) focus. As part of the evening an informational presentation on the social, emotional and physical development of middle years children will be provided by Dr. Kimberly Schonert-Reichl, a well-respected professor at UBC in the Human Development, Learning and Cultural Program Department in the Faculty of Education. Ms. Schonert-Reichl is also the Director of the Human Early Learning Partnership. District staff, parents and students will share their perspectives on middle school programming. Following the presentations, members of the community will have the opportunity to have conversations at their tables to share their thoughts on this model and generate questions for the presenters and District staff. It should be noted that community receptivity to a district-wide middle school program would not result in immediate implementation throughout the District. Each affected community would still have an opportunity to participate in future consultation meetings regarding how this model could be implemented into their family of schools with respect to long-term facility plans. I am hopeful that you are able to join us on Wednesday, October 5th. Please RSVP to my Executive Assistant, Clare Pereira, at [email protected] or via phone 604-534-7891, local 221. I look forward to meeting you and engaging you in a productive conversation. Sincerely,

Gord Stewart A/Superintendent of Schools

About:

Join Brittany Palmer of Unlock your Future as she leads students and parents through a step-by-step program for navigating the scholarship process. Grade 11/12 students and parents are welcome and encouraged to attend: it is never too early to get started. This comprehensive presentation covers topics ranging from building your scholarship foundation to crafting a strong personal statement. Contrary to popular belief, students do not need 95% averages or international achievements to win scholarships. Through this seminar followed by a question and answer session, Brittany debunks common scholarship myths and breaks down the complex process into a manageable form. Using this program, Brittany and her younger brother Bo collectively won 35 scholarships totaling over $125,000. Since 2005, she has shared her story and strategies with tens of thousands of students, parents and educators. The Unlock your Future Scholarship Workbook ($25) and Scholarship Kit ($30), which are accompaniments to the program, will be available for purchase. There will also be a Scholarship Kit available as a door prize following the seminar. Through this dynamic and informative presentation, Brittany demonstrates that scholarships are indeed possible.
