The BC Summer Games ended with a rousingsend-off – and major awards – for the athletes.

Thousands of athletes, officials, and onlookers had a final partySunday afternoon to officially close the 2010 BC Summer Games.

Three-time Paralympic swimmer Donovan Tildesley, 26, emceedthe ceremony paying tribute to Langley Township, 2,812 volunteers,and the 2,461 athletes who travelled from around the province tocompete in 23 sports.

It was the first time a Paralympian emceed a Games event.Township Mayor Rick Green, speaking to a packed Langley Events

Centre, said the community was honoured to play host and share arole in the athletic careers of the young people.

And it was a member of the host community,Grade 9 Langley Secondary student GeorgiaEllenwood, who was called up to the stage– in front of thousands of her fellow ath-letes – to accept the W.R. Bennett Awardfor Athletic Excellence.

“This is really exciting,” she said, sec-onds after accepting the award from FortLangley-Aldergrove MLA Rich Coleman.

The award recognizes major sportaccomplishments, future potential andambition in sport, and leadership – and itcarries with it a $2,500 bursary.

Ellenwood dominated her events in trackand field, winning gold medals in high jump,long jump, 200-metre hurdles, and along withteammates, the Fraser Valley 4 x 400m – andset BC Games records in the high jump and longjump along the way.

“I performed well,” Ellenwood said, “but Ididn’t get any PBs [personal bests].”

Ellenwood said her golden Games will pro-pel her track and field endeavours.

“This makes me a lot more confident, but it also putspressure on myself to perform at the same level.”

A handful of other athletes won BC Athlete Voice andTeam BC Future Leader awards, including Jacob Houlton,a Langley athlete competing in athletics (track and field);and basketball player Anna Frenkel of Kamloops; syn-cronized swimmer Robyn Bartle of Nanaimo; Surreyindoor volleyball player Nicole Laniuk-Etter; and MorganFlynn, a field hockey player from Castlegar.

Bumps, bruises, andscrapes – and a fewmore serious injuries– were recorded over thecourse of the BCSummer Gamesin Langley.

But fortun-ately, organ-izers say noone was inlife-threateningdanger thanksto plenty of BCAmbulance andSt. John’s Ambulanceteams being on hand.

Games medical directorDeanna Schick said themost serious incidentswere a young womanwho collapsed duringthe triathlon and a food-related allergic attack.

Both of those received

prompt attention andtreatment.

There were also ahandful of accidents thatresulted in sprains andfractures.

Some accidents lookedterrifying and resulted intrips to the hospital forcheckups, but the com-petitors walked away.

One young womancompeting in triathlonspilled off her bike dur-ing a steep downhill at

the AldergroveLake RegionalPark, Schicksaid.

The accidentlooked bad,and paramedicsinsisted she goto hospital, butX-rays revealedno broken

bones. The athlete hadonly scrapes and bruises.

The incident wassimilar to one in whicha wrestler was dumpedon his head during com-petition at H.D. StaffordMiddle School. Thewrestler was taken outon a back board and was

X-rayed, but was backwith his team and walk-ing around later the sameday.

Paramedics had accessto a number of ambu-lances, but they werealso on foot, on bicyclein the case of St. John’sAmbulance, and on an

ATV-style vehicle for BCAmbulance.

The medically equippedGator is a legacy of the2010 Winter Olympics.

“I’m very pleasedwith my medical team,”Schick said.

Along with the para-medics, the Games saw

about 130 volunteermedical staff on hand,including doctors, nurses,physiotherapists, andmassage therapists.

The BC Ambulanceparamedics, all volun-teers, took five people tohospital over the courseof the Games.

Langley RCMP have arrested a high-risk sex offender who was wantedCanada-wide after walking away from hisVancouver halfway house.

James Leo Gracie, 50, disappeared

Wednesday, and was caught Saturdayat 5 p.m. in the Fort Langley area, saidLangley RCMP Const. Darren Forsyth.

“We just happened to catch him in ourjurisdiction,” Forsyth said.

After he vanished last week, theVancouver Police Department issued awarning, saying Gracie posed a risk ofsignificant harm to all young childrenand female adolescents.

He has a history of sex-related convic-tions involving children, some of themknown to him, and some strangers.

Gracie is now back in custody.

Neighbours will be warned and willhave a chance to speak before soil isdumped in the Township.by Matthew [email protected]

The public will have a greater voice insaying where and when soil is dumped inLangley Township after some new ruleswere passed last week.

The gist of the new rules is to forcethose planning to dump soil on ruralproperties to notify their neighbours –both by mail and by putting up signs onthe property – and council will considerany dump larger than 600 cubic metres.

Earlier this spring, the ALC declaredthat the Township could deny or approvesoil deposit permits at will. Prior tothis, for many years the Township hadbelieved the ALC could overrule the

Township when it came to soil dumping.Councillors tweaked the interim rules

to make them even more transparent.Councillor Mel Kositsky suggested

that anyone wishing to dump soil in theTownship have to buy a newspaper ad inlocal papers. That ad will be part of theTownship Page.

Next it was Coun. Kim Richter whosuggested the policy to be adjusted so allpublic comments about soil deposits besent to councillors and the mayor, notjust municipal office staff.

In addition, she suggested that soildeposit permits be approved in the waythat development permits are approved.

The key change in policy is that beforesuch a permit is issued, anyone in theaudience at a council meeting can givethe council their opinion.

It would essentially create a publichearing on every major soil deposit per-mit.

Premier GordonCampbell came to Langleyarmed with a piece ofgood news on Thursday.

The same day he helpedopen the BC SummerGames, the provincial gov-ernment announced thatthe Port Mann twinningproject is one third com-plete, and will be finishedin 2012, a year ahead ofthe original schedule.

“Coming through thetraffic today, I thinkpeople will be glad tohave it early,” Campbellsaid while speaking tolocal media.

The premier spoke abouta wide range of topics,from the BC SummerGames to education to theHST.

Campbell compared theBC Summer Games tothe Winter Olympics, andtalked about the nationalunity and pride thosegames fostered.

When it comes to sport,the government’s role is

to get out information thathelps people lead healthylives, Campbell said.

That includes efforts likethe Summer Games, butalso letting people knowthat 30 minutes of phys-ical activity can reduce therisk of some cancers, andof diabetes.

You can’tlegislatethat peoplewalk, jog,cycle,or join asports team,but you candesign com-munitiesto make iteasier tolive healthylives, hesaid.

“We haveto pro-vide thoseopportunities to people,”said Campbell.

He was positiveabout Langley City andTownship’s efforts to cre-ate “comprehensive com-munities.”

One of the challengesfor government is the ten-dency to focus on just onething as the solution to aproblem, Campbell said.

“There’s no one thing,”he said.

Funding for pub-lic transportation, theGreening Cities programthat co-funds bike lanes,and healthy living initia-tives are all part of that,Campbell said.

But when it comes tocommunity planning, it’sup to cities, he said.

On thebroaderissue of theenviron-ment,Campbelldid notcomedown foror againstwaste toenergyinciner-ators, buthe did saythat exist-ing landfillsare major

generators of methane, agreenhouse gas.

Recycling efforts arealready well established,so reducing consumptionhas to be the next majormethod of cutting downon garbage, Campbellsaid.

He pointed to the carbontax as one way of forcingreduction.

“It’s about saying thereis a reward for productiv-

ity,” Campbell said.The premier also admit-

ted that the implemen-tation of the HST washandled badly.

“I’m the first to admitthat we didn’t roll that outthe way I think I’d liketo,” Campbell said.

He added that he was“frankly apologetic to thepeople in B.C.”

As the government hassaid before, Campbell saidthe sudden about-faceon the HST was due toOntario finishing its nego-tiations and getting goodterms with the federalgovernment.

“We piggybacked onthe Ontario negotiations,”Campbell said.

On schools, Campbellwas asked about whetherthe province will respondwith more oversight toschool districts budgets,in light of Langley andVancouver’s recent mas-sive shortfalls.

“I think it’s identified anumber of significant con-cerns,” Campbell said ofthe incidents.

He did not say if theprovince will take a moreactive role.

“I think we’ve seensome problems and I thinkwe’ve got to confrontthem,” he said.

The Jericho neighbourhood may bethe first place in western Langley to seehighrise housing constructed, Townshipcouncil decided last week.

The council voted unanimously infavour of the third reading ofthe Jericho sub-neighbour-hood plan, but not until aftersome wrangling over parksand the height of buildings.

The Jericho area lies onboth sides of 200th Streetnear 82nd and 80th Avenues.

The project includes a widevariety of zonings, includingoffices, shops, condos andhighrises of up to 20 storeys.Much of the land is to be mixed use,with shops on lower floors and livingspace above.

Council remains split on highrises,with Councillors Jordan Bateman andKim Richter calling for a maximum of sixstoreys.

“I like the idea of six storeys, that’svery much what I’d consider to behuman-scale development,” Richter said.

Bateman worried about highrises chan-ging Langley’s character.

“Urban villages do not have to mean20-storey buildings,” he said.

A six-storey cap will still allow enoughdensity to justify more transit in the area,he said.

However, the majority of council wasfine with the maximum height beingincreased.

“I think 200th Street is our kickoffto our sustainability,” said Coun. BevDornan.

If the Township is going to have high-rises, this is the place for them, she said.A rapid bus route is planned for 200thStreet once the Port Mann expansion isfinished.

She also noted that 20 storeys is themaximum height, not a set number.

“It doesn’t mean we have to have 20-storey buildings,” Dornansaid. “I think capping it atfive or six storeys wouldbe wrong.”

Market conditions maymean developers buildsmaller buildings, saidCoun. Grant Ward.

“This is all in the future,and I think we shouldplan for at least 20 stor-eys, and come down from

there if we must,” he said.An attempt by Bateman to amend the

plan to reduce building heights to sixstoreys was not successful.

After council heard from more than adozen people at a recent public hearing,the plan has been tweaked a bit.

Commercial and residential develop-ment will now proceed at the same time,rather than with commercial leading theway in the high density core.

Shops and restaurants will be locatedaround a central plaza across from theLangley Events Centre, to provide more“eyes on the ground” and keep the areafrom becoming deserted after workinghours.

I can’t even remember how far back it waswhen Lynn Whitehouse of the Greater LangleyChamber of Commerce mentioned that shewas a director for the upcoming Township ofLangley 2010 BC Summer Games… and did Iknow anyone who could help her out by chair-ing one of the several committees she neededto provide under her directorate.

She needed someone to handle public rela-tions, to get the word about the Games out tothe community, to educate peoplethroughout the community aboutthe Games, to keep the communityupdated about any news comingout as the organization and prep-arations for the Games progressed,and finally, to ensure that all thestories emanating from the Gamesand the young athletes involved inthe events taking place in Langleywere made available to be told throughout theprovince, in all of the hometowns of the ath-letes and other participants.

My first thought was: this is a job made tomeasure for the local community newspaper.If that’s not what the Langley Advance’s man-date is, then what the heck are we doing onthis planet?

And my second thought – if I’m to be hon-est – was steeped in fear: this was going to bea big job, a huge effort, and whole lot morework than I really wanted to be doing on topof everything else I had going on.

And then my third thought was: maybe Icould talk someone else into doing it. I couldbe Lynn’s hero by finding someone for her– someone other than myself.

Well, that’s the way my thinking went, andin the end, Langley Advance publisher RyanMcAdams ended up chairing the public rela-tions committee.

And I somehow got roped into running theGames news arm of the operation.

Hmmm...Thankfully, my friend and colleague Marlyn

Graziano agreed to co-chair the media centre,which was tasked with recruiting volunteerreporters to collect information and developstories about athletes and their accomplish-ments. She is good at all the aspects of the jobthat I don’t feel are my strong suits (and betterat the ones I do).

And all of the reporters in the Advance news-room – Roxy, Troy, Matthew, and Heather– volunteered their time to form a core force todo the nitty-gritty on-the-ground grunt work.Plus two of my favourite former Advance repor-ters, Leanna Jantzi and Bethany Meckelburg,offered their services.

Also on board as reporterswere some surprisingly talentedvolunteers with varying levelsof experience and unrelentingenthusiasm. I didn’t know anyof them before the Games – andI won’t forget them.

And then there was DennisDavidson and his huge – andtremendously capable – crew of

photographers who shared our space.The Township provided us with a great

bunch of folks – Steve, Shane, Patrick, andothers – who handled the technical aspects ofsetting up the media facilities, including themost-excellent website we were able to utilize.

What a great bunch of people to work with!As the Games drew nearer, my trepidation

grew exponentially. My biggest fear was that Iwould let all these wonderful people down.

But in fact, now that it’s over, I realize thatwas silly – they all made it so easy for me,that I really couldn’t have screwed it up if I’dtried. Advance business manager Bonnie Swabycollected the volunteers together for us, andwith direction and encouragement from peoplelike Ryan and Lynn, all I had to do was sitback and let the news copy flow.

Fun the heartof BC Games

There are many things we could sayabout the just-concluded BC SummerGames in Langley.

We could talk about the victories– about the gold medals won, the athleteswho gave everything they had and foundthemselves standing atop the podium.

We could spend more time talkingabout losing, about training and striving,and coming up short. About the satisfac-tion of knowing you gave your all andaccepting defeat with grace and dignity.

We could move the spotlight off theathletes for a moment and talk about thevolunteers. Thousands of them who inmany cases helped the Games happenwithout ever seeing a single game or race.Instead, they toiled behind the scenes tomeet the needs of others.

We could talk about the RCMP, andabout how they didn’t have much to doon the weekend. There was not a singleGames-related incident reported to thepolice in Langley. Thousands of parents,coaches, teenagers and pre-teens descend-ed on Langley, and didn’t make a peep, asfar as the police were concerned.

But what we’d really like to talk aboutis the fun.

At every venue, from basketball to row-ing, volleyball to wrestling, cycling to boc-cia, there was a festive mood in the air.

It wasn’t uncommon for parents tocheer every competitor in a race. A littlebit more cheering for their own son ordaughter, maybe, but jeers and put downswere very hard to find.

The young athletes at these Games arenot highly-paid professionals, they are notcompeting on a world stage with five ringsin the background.

They came to Langley to have fun. Hereat the Advance, we heard repeatedly fromthe kids that they were having fun.

That is the best legacy the Games couldleave.

Dear Editor,I read editor Bob Groeneveld’s article con-

cerning change in the management of theLangley Advance as it concerned the higherechelons of ownership [Not much chan-ging here… yet, July 20 Odd Thoughts,Langley Advance].

His accompanying remarks on changes inthe newspaper industry itself were of rivet-ing interest to me.

During the Korean War, I failed to concealthe fact of my deteriorating eyesight andwas transferred from an infantry regimentto the U.S. Forces Public Relations Schoolin New Rochelle, New York. Upon gradua-tion, I became a public relations officer,and hence my future newspaper career wasassured.

The Sudbury Star, the High River Times,the Albertan, the now-defunct Nelson DailyNews, and then the Calgary Herald were themajor players in my life until 1970, whenwe moved to Langley.

The Langley Advance in those days waslocated in a tiny office on Fraser Highway.

And it seemed to my wife and I thatAuntie Maude’s tea party was likely toshare the front page with news of moreimportance.

The Langley Advance has progressed dra-matically in its appearance, its coverage,and its overall quality.

I can only surmise the technological

advances that the news and advertisingteam must master in this age of electronics.

I can recall the days when the classifiedsections produced huge amounts of anynewspaper’s revenue. Due to Craigslist andthe electronic age, this section of all news-papers has become a mere shadow of itsformer self.

It is difficult for an old codger like me toingest the fact that 300 book-length novelscan be viewed on one tiny device that canbe held in one hand.

And apart from that, much of the infor-mation available in this world can be pro-duced by pushing the correct button.

I admire the newspaper staff that pro-gresses in this rapidly changing environ-ment.

I wish them well and do take advantageof their excellent on-line reporting.

It was so simple in my day: send a tele-gram of 10 words; letters from home whenoverseas came on flimsy paper that tooka couple of weeks to reach the recipient,if you were lucky; radio offered news andentertainment when television was just astory in “upcoming events” in the dailypaper.

However, I know that Bob and the staff ofthe Advance will forge into the future withgusto, and continue to bring before us theevents that will affect our lives.

Paper weathers changes

Dear Editor,A large, framed photo at Langley City Hall

shows the very first train arrived in Langleyon the first of July, Dominion Day, 1910.

That was a century ago.Passenger and goods service on the BC

Electric Railway between Chilliwack andVancouver was only in operation till 1950.

The company was originally a subsidiaryof Vancouver Power Co. Ltd., and later ofBC Hydro.

These days, we have Southern Railwayof BC running up and down with mixedgoods trains between New Westminster andChilliwack.

Within the City of Langley, as we know,the railway line was realigned to north ofLogan Crescent in the late 1960s, and mosttrains are Canadian Pacific’s long coal trainsto Roberts Bank Coal Port.

Within Cloverdale, the railway line was

also realigned, but to the south, and morerecently.

But for the remainder, the route is stillpretty much the same as when it was com-pleted a century ago. This was securedby way of agreements between VancouverPower Co. Ltd. and the various municipal-ities – like the “Langley Tram Power andLight Bylaw” of 1906.

This is most likely the only railway linein Canada without a federal or provincialcharter.

In the not too distant future, the trainmay be back, as a “community rail.”

Now don’t get confused with the oldtype of train you may know from years ago– these cars will likely be slick Bombardier-built cars with the latest technology.

Let us look forward to the occasion ofanother “first train.”

“He rarely initiated any-thing, but waited patientlyfor others to phone, to visit,to write. A character flaw,perhaps, but that was Dick– never one to impose.

“However, once youunderstood the man, onceyou showed an interest inhim, once you valued himfor his intellect, he willinglyshared his dreams, his val-ues, his disappointments,his pain.

“Richard Straw was theoriginal 3R Man.

“He took recycling to a

whole new level, and webelieve he thought the 3 R’smeant: RE-USE, RE-USE,RE-USE.

“Dick was a man whowaited, who rarely com-plained, who exudedpatience, gentleness, andgratefulness.”

You could not find agreater gentleman to have aschool named after.

Hunger doesn’tcare that the sunis out and thetemperatures are

hot. Hunger doesn’t carethat people yearn to soakup some rays or createspecial memories with theirfamilies.

Instead, hunger is areality – summer andwinter – for many people inLangley.

To help alleviate hungerin the community, the Lang-ley Advance continues tocollect food and cash dona-tions as part of the com-munity newspaper’s Pay ItForward campaign.

People have been stop-ping by the newspaperoffice at 6375 202nd St.with baby food, staple groceries, sometreats, and cash.

Donations (food and cash) areaccepted during office hours (8:30a.m. to 5 p.m.). The goal is to gather

enough donations to fill a cube fanwith food.

The non-perishable food donationsare being given to the Langley FoodBank while the cash donations arebeing split between Langley Meals on

Wheels and the Salvation Army Gate-way of Hope shelter. The donationswill help the community groups carryon with their work of feeding peopleat a time of year when donation-reliantgroups are often overlooked.

Langley Advance receptionist Jackie McKinley is one of the staff members overseeing the Pay It Forward foodand cash donations that are being accepted at the newspaper office. The goal is to fill a van for the LangleyFood Bank. Any cash donations will be divided between Langley Meals on Wheels and the Gateway of Hope.

vance Community Harvestto begin again.

This year the Advancehas partnered with theLangley EnvironmentalPartners Society.

With LEPS throwing itsconsiderable weight behindthe project, the two partnershope that more fresh localfruit than ever can flow tothe Langley Food Bank.

The Community Harvestis part of the Pay It Forwardprogram. It began four yearsago with a few ladders and

some volunteers.The idea is based on

gleaning programs in othercommunities and is simple:connect volunteer pickerswith those with an over-abundance of produce.

Many homeowners havefruit trees that provide morefruit than one family couldever use. Volunteers pickapples, plums, pears, orother produce from thosetrees. The fruit is split threeways: an equal share goesto the homeowners, the vol-

unteers, and the food bank.In many cases, home-

owners and volunteers havetaken a reduced share, ornothing at all, leaving thevast majority to go towardshelping the food bank.

Earlier this year, theAdvance received the MaMurray Community ServiceAward for the program.

A local brother andsister are building onpast successes.

Injuries didn’t slowdown Langley siblingsJarid and Jade Vaughanduring the 2010 track andfield season.

Due to various ailments,neither had any pre-sea-son training.

In April 2009, Jarid hadsprinted to the fastest 200-metre time for a universityathlete in all of America.

He had just achieved thelow time of 20.47 secondsin the 200m sprint at theUniversity of Oklahoma,in his first outdoor race ofthe season.

Back at home inLangley, also at the startof 2009, his sister Jade

was nominated for BestAthlete in B.C. for her agedivision, along with B.C.’stop athlete Shai-anneDavis.

Little did Jarid andJade know that insteadof an anticipated suc-cessful 2009 season, theywould both be injured andrehabilitating for the nexteight months.

Jade had suffered a hipflexor injury, while broth-er Jarid was diagnosedwith a sports hernia.

The hardest part forboth Vaughans was thenews that they could notrun for the rest of theyear.

Jarid tried rehabilitation,but it was inevitable thathe needed an operation,which he finally had inJanuary of this year.

So Jarid, having missed

pre-season training,worked hard to start his2010 season in March.

At his season opener,Jarid attended theEdmonton InternationalTrack Classic, sprinting totimes of 10.50 seconds in

the 100m and 21 secondsin the 200m.

Then, in the PacificInternational Series, Jaridcompeted in the Lafargemeet in Abbotsford, theVictoria International, theHarry Jerome International

Track Classic, and theKajaks International, win-ning gold medals in threeof the meets.

At the recent B.C. cham-pionships in Abbotsford,Jarid won gold medals inthe 100m and 200m races.

Jarid has been chosento represent B.C.’s sen-ior team, heading for theCanadian championshipswhich start Wednesday inToronto.

The meet will alsoserve as trials for theCommonwealth Gameswhich this year will beheld in Delhi, India.

Jarid is heading backto Texas in December totrain, hoping to stay therefor the next two years ashe vies for a spot on theCanadian Olympic teamfor the 2012 SummerGames.

Meanwhile, it has alsotaken Jade almost a yearto return to the track, onlybeing allowed to sprint atfirst, and then recently todo what she loves most– hurdles.

Over the course of thisseason, Jade won gold inthe 300-metre hurdles atthe Coquitlam Cheetahsmeet, the Langley Pacific,the Trevor Craven meetin Burnaby, the JackBrow meet in Kelowna,and most recently at theB.C. championships inAbbotsford.

She has been selectedto represent the BritishColumbia youth teamat the Legion Canadianchampionships in OttawaAug. 5-9.

Her personal best timeof 44.06 is the lowest inCanada.

Association U17 Selects tookon all comers to win the goldmedal in their division at theWestern Challenge Cup regionalball hockey tournament, held inLangley July 15-18.

The Canadian Ball HockeyAssociation-sanctioned eventwas hosted by West CoastMinor Ball Hockey of B.C., alongwith the Valley Ball HockeyAssociation (VBHA), andattracted 35 teams from B.C.and Alberta for this elite playertournament.

Games were watched in theGeorge Preston RecreationCentre (GPRC), LangleySportsplex, and the LangleyEvents Centre (LEC).

Gold medal rounds wereplayed at the LEC while thebattles for bronze took place atthe GPRC.

Teams from B.C. and Albertain the U10, U12, U14, U17 andU19 divisions competed for thetitle of western regional cham-pions July 18.

The host VBHA had strongmedal showings with the U10,U12, U14, and U19 teams com-peting for bronze while the U17squad battled it out with rivalRidge Meadows Renegades inthe gold medal round.

The U10 Valley Thunder, U12Valley Hawks, and U14 Valley

Warriors secured bronze-medalvictories in their age groups. Allthree teams battled hard fromdeficit scores towin their divisions.

The U17 ValleySelects squad– coached byWayne Van Geel,Shawn Peters, andAl Abercrombie– advanced to thefinal at the LEC,after securing agold medal spot onSaturday by beat-ing the EdmontonExtreme 9-2 in the divisionsemifinal.

In the championship game, theSelects clipped the Renegades 4-3 to win divisional gold.

play and team work were thereason for this team’s success,”said Van Geel, the Selects’ head

coach. “It was anabsolute privilegeto coach eachand every one ofthese young men.I am thrilled fortheir success as ateam.”

The Western ChallengeCup ball hockey tourna-ment was played July 15-18 at the three venues: theGeorge Preston RecreationCentre, Langley EventsCentre, and the LangleySportsplex.

Eight teams competedin the under-14 divisionincluding Valley, Delta,Calgary, Edmonton, Metro,Ridge-Meadows, Surrey,and Richmond.

The host Valley Warriorsfinished third in the tour-nament with a 4-2 recordto capture bronze.

On the way to the medalgame, Valley beat Metro5-0 and Calgary 9-1 beforeedging Ridge Meadows4-3 in overtime. The win-ner versus Ridge Meadowscame from a great shotby Scott McQuade, whichlifted the Warriors into themedal round.

The bronze medal gamewas played at the GPRC,where the Warriors facedSurrey, which also sporteda 3-2 record heading intothe contest.

The Warriors were allover their Lower Mainlandrivals but could not finish,as Surrey took a 1-0 leadgoing into the final period.

Valley kept the pressureon but still could not score.

Surrey scored twice morein the final period to take aseemingly insurmountable3-0 lead.

Then, in the final 4:30of the third period, theWarriors offence camealive, scoring three unan-swered goals to tie thescore.

Valley also scored whatlooked to be the winner,but the buzzer had gone atthe end of regulation, for-cing overtime.

The two teams battledback and forth througha scoreless extra sessionbefore the line of DrewRepin, Brian Stertz, and

Trevor Mainman combinedto end the contest, withMainman tallying the win-ning goal with 7:37 left inthe third overtime period.

Defensively, Valley’schecking line of TyDieterich, Scott McQuade,and Brad Wightman shutdown Surrey’s top offen-sive players.

The entire team consist-ing of Devin Waddell,Brendan Woods, DevinStone, Alex Ferguson,Chris Molloy, RyanDiebert, Chase Irwin,Brandon Fortune, JasonFrew, Nick Hall, NicholasKhounviseth, Josh Baron,Devon Becker, AustinKingsborough, and JustinLajeuness, who, alongwith goaltenders MichaelBencze and Brendan Oslic,contributed to the team’svictory.

The team exchanged four goals each inthe final stanza.

Nanaimo Timbermen 11, Thunder 10The Thunder suffered a slow start

Saturday in their game against the hostNanaimo Timbermen.

The Timbermen jumped out to a 5-2lead after period one, forcing the Thunderto play catch-up the rest of the way.

The Thunder finished strongly, scoringfour goals while holding the T-men to asingle marker in the third period, but theycouldn’t quite complete the comeback.

Langley’s Stephan Leblanc scored with3:03 remaining in the game to narrow thedeficit to 11-10 but that was as close asthe Thunder would come.

The Thunder have missed their top scor-er Garrett Billings the past few games.

Billings, a Langley resident, helpedCanada’s field lacrosse team advanceto Saturday’s finale of the world fieldlacrosse championships in Manchester,England.

In the title game, the United Statesjumped to an early lead, then rallied tobeat Canada 12-10 on Saturday to win thechampionship. The U.S. scored the game’sfinal three goals to clinch the title. Billingsscored for Canada in the loss.

The Thunder close out their seasonWednesday, when they host the MapleRidge Burrards at the Langley EventsCentre. Game time is 7:45 p.m.
