Only one conclusion canbe drawn in the murdertrial of Davey Butorac,Crown counsel said inhis summation Monday.

by Jennifer [email protected]

Aldergrove’s DaveyMato Butorac intendedto kill two Fraser Valleysex-trade workers whenhe severely beat themthree years ago, a Crownprosecutor told a SupremeCourt jury Monday.

Christopher McPherson, making his final addressin Butorac’s second-degreemurder trial in NewWestminster, said thatthe evidence presented attrial, when considered asa whole, proves Butorac’sguilt.

The body of Gwendolyn JoLawton, 46, was found on March 13,2007 dumped over an embankmentbeside a rural road in Abbotsford.Lawton had been beaten and stran-gled to death.

Three-and-a-half months later, 50-year-old Sheryl Lynn Koroll’s bodywas found in a Langley industrialpark. Koroll, who was also beaten, died of a skull fracture.

During his address, McPhersonshowed the jury photos and videoand repeated evidence from the trial.

He said that Butorac’s prized whiteChevrolet Cavalier is a key piece ofthe puzzle.

Blood and DNA in the trunk andpassenger side of Butorac’s car —

which Butorac told anundercover police officer he didn’t letanyone else drive — were matchedto Lawton and Koroll.

A similar car was also seen onsurveillance footage twice, enteringand leaving the industrial park whereKoroll’s body was dumped.

A tire mark on Koroll’s right wristwas matched to the right rear tire onButorac’s car.

“This is the very same tire,”McPherson said.

When police searched Butorac’scar, they found a black metal barunder the front floor mat and a tireiron in the trunk. The women’s injur-ies could have been caused by thebar or the tire iron, a witness testi-fied.

“This very Cavalier isinextricably linked… to thedeaths of two sex-trade work-ers,” McPherson said.

McPherson pointed outthat footprints found aroundKoroll’s body may havebeen left by shoes taken offButorac’s feet in October2007. Blood found on one ofthe shoes and shoelaces wasmatched to Koroll.

The women were verysimilar in several ways,McPherson said, Both weremiddle-aged, just over 100pounds, five feet three andfive feet four inches tall, haddyed reddish-brown hairand were sex-trade workersaddicted to drugs.

“A more vulnerable groupof people is hard to imagine,”McPherson said. “They’reeasy targets.”

Both women’s bodies werealso “dumped unceremoni-ously,” not concealed, andboth had their genitals andbreasts exposed, he said.

“They’re displayed as sex-tradeworkers,” McPherson said.

Considering the evidence, includ-ing the car, he said, there is nodoubt that Butorac killed Lawton andKoroll. McPherson also said that theseverity of the beatings both womenendured and the strangulation ofLawton showed that Butorac meantfor them to die.

“There’s only a single inferencethat can be drawn,” McPherson said, asking the jury to convict on bothcounts of second-degree murder.

The defence will make its finalarguments after press deadlineMonday afternoon, and Tuesday.

Murder case goes to jury

The Langley Teachers’ Associationisn’t taking the summer off.

by Heather [email protected]

The union representing teachers inthe local public schools finally got tosit down with a local MLA.

The Langley Teachers’ Associationhas been asking for months to meetwith Fort Langley-Aldergrove MLA

Rich Coleman and Langley MLAMary Polak, and for them to becomemore vocal about local education.

The Langley School District is tack-ling a $13.5-million debt/deficit.

On June 29 the LTA finally metwith Polak.

“We wanted to inform Ms.Polak, Minister of Children andFamily Development and MinisterResponsible for Child Care, of thespecifics of the $7 million in pro-posed cuts in services to Langleystudents effective this September,”

said LTA president Susan Fonseca.“We were hoping she would acknow-ledge the impact these cuts will haveon children in her constituency andprovide some hope to restore theseservices.”

The LTA also met with the AuditorGeneral’s office recently to find outmore about its role as the new aud-itor for the Langley district.

Langley is one of five districts inthe province that have hired theAuditor General’s office as its finan-cial auditor.

There was no funding set aside this yearto finish the courts, said David Leavers, the Township’s head of parks and rec.The partnership will speed up building.

A pair of bait truck thieves didn’tknow what they were getting into, until police rolled up.

It wasn’t a good night for a boyfriendand girlfriend truck thief duo.

Just before midnight Thursday night, aman took the bait, and decided to steala bait truck in the Willoughby area ofLangley, said Sgt. Gord Elias, spokesmanfor the Integrated Municipal-ProvincialAuto Crime Team (IMPACT).

The RCMP’s Air One helicopter wasinstantly alerted, and deployed to observethe suspect in action, he explained.

“Once the truck was moving, the AirOne helicopter crew quickly realized thatthe stolen bait truck was being followedby another pickup truck,” Elias said.

However, the suspect didn’t notice thehelicopter above him.

Patrol members from the Langley RCMP

were called in to assist on the groundpursuit, and the bait truck’s engine wasremotely disabled.

Even after his engine suddenly died, thesuspect did not realize he was driving abait truck.

When police moved in, the man waslooking under the hood of the truck, searching for the problem.

The second truck, which stoppedbehind the disabled bait truck, turnedout to have been stolen recently fromWhistler and was being driven by theman’s girlfriend. She, too, was arrestedwithout incident.

Several charges are now being recom-mended against the 34-year-old man andthe 42-year-old woman, both of no fixedaddress.

“Live video and audio feed from thebait truck and the thermal imaging cam-era in the Air One helicopter proved tobe too much technology for these carthieves,” Elias said.

Swimmers given voiceAldergrove residents may get a chance to give their two cents onthe closing of a popular Aldergrove Lake.Story and photo by Matthew [email protected]

With the fate of Aldergrove Lake in jeopardy, Township council hasasked Metro Vancouver to consult publicly on the future of the park.

Councillor Charlie Fox suggested the idea last Monday, asking MetroVancouver Parks to host an open house for Aldergrove residents.

Fox wants to see the park’s users give input on future plan options.Metro Vancouver is expected to make a final decision on the swimming

hole in Aldergrove Lake Regional Park later this month. The 40-year-old concrete-lined swimming hole is leaking, and is

increasingly expensive to repair and maintain.Metro Vancouver Parks is considering building a new lake as wilder-

ness habitat, but the idea is at an early stage.

There’s still plenty left to share, and anyone who would like to get ataste of the action is invited to joinan evening of organic cooking andeating at the Garden on Thursday,July 15, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Nichole Marples, Langley EnviromentalPartners Society executive director and the localfoodie who will be hosting the event, is lookingforward to spreading the word about Langley’s

delicious edibles.“The food produced in Langley is second to

none,” said Marples. “We have an amazingvariety of vegetables, fruits, cheeses, pickles, preserves and specialty sauces right at our

fingertips.”A report published by the

Organic Agriculture Centreof Canada found that organicproduce is often tastier andricher in a wide range of nutri-ents than conventionally grownproduce.

Scientists refer to the sensoryexperience of foods as “organo-leptic” – the fullness of a plumptomato, the snap of biting intoa crisp apple, or the first burstof sweet juice from a perfectstrawberry.

In a wide range of organolep-tic properties, organic foods come out on top.Add the freshness of local choices, and onemay find a meal made in heaven.

The menu for Thursday includes bruschetta, salad, and desert, and a booklet of great sea-sonal recipes.

Our View

Criminal mindsnot very sharp

A couple of suspected car thieves areon their way to a court date, courtesy of abait car sting last week.

The boyfriend and girlfriend (drivingtrucks that matched – both stolen) don’tseem to be the honour students of crime.

The man drove off in a bait truck. Hewas tailed by the Air One police helicop-ter, but apparently failed to notice thesound of the rotor blades above his head.Suddenly, the truck’s engine died.

Did he put two and two together? No.Instead, he got out and tried to fix thetruck, and was looking under the hoodwhen the Langley RCMP pulled up andarrested him and his girlfriend.

High school guidance counsellorsdon’t recommend “criminal” as a fieldof endeavour. But if people are makinga conscious choice to become crooks,it seems to be made only by those whoaren’t capable of much else.

The police are full of stories aboutcriminals whose plans seem to be lessthan well thought out. The burglar fromBrookswood spotted running across abusy street, cradling a TV in his arms. Thearmed robbers who look, unmasked, dir-ectly at the security cameras.

More than a decade ago, a couple ofthieves managed to literally knock over aLangley ATM. They smashed it off its basewith a stolen pickup truck, loaded it up,and took off, the police in hot pursuit. Thecrooks even got away – but not before theATM, unsecured, had slid right out theback of the truck and onto the road.

Crime seems like easy money. Butbecoming a crook seems to indicate a lackof ability to plan at all. Which should be acomfort to the rest of us.

“Were you born in a barn?”To my personal horror, those words came

out of my own mouth before I could stem theflow. The words were meant jokingly, andwere delivered so obviously as to be easilytaken in the humour intended.

I was the only one not smiling.Nobody was offended, and yet I would have

taken it back if I could. I would have dis-owned those words in a heartbeat.

I couldn’t believe I’d said it.I hate the expression. I despise it.Every time I hear it, no matter

how lightly proffered, I cringe. It’s one of those things that is

attached to a memory that occa-sionally reaches up out of the dark-er cracks and crannies of my brain.

It wasn’t anything I’d done. Itwas something that I had witnessed perhaps30 years ago: the easy and careless destructionof a child’s joy through a bit of thoughtless-ness that may not have been an act of malice– but probably was.

Let me set the scene: it was a beautiful sum-mer’s day at the old, somewhat forlorn, def-initely rustic Langley Advance offices on FraserHighway in Downtown Langley City (I believeLotsa Pots occupies that space now).

Back then, the Advance was printed at a plantin Abbotsford. The plates went out the dooron Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. sharp, and flatsof newspapers started returning for distribu-tion to subscribers a couple of hours later.

People used to line up, quarters in hand,at the front counter, waiting for the arrival oftheir community news.

The paper came out only once a week, andnaturally, there was a mental lift when theweek’s deadlines were once again behind us.

The Wednesday in question was one of

those breezy summer days that seems to makethe whole world smile.

It was the kind of day that makes childrendance out of the sheer lightness of being.

Often on such days, we’d remove the springfrom the old wood-and-glass front door andprop it open. With the back door open as well, the fresh air would waft gently through theentire place, lifting spirits to the point where, sometimes, you could feel full to bursting.

But there was one senior staff person work-ing in that front office who I don’t believe wasever in a spirit-bursting mood.

Spirit-breaking, yes: that’s what this storyis about. She didn’t like the door open, andwhen she was there, it wasn’t.

I was at the front counter, helping to tradeour hot-off-the-press papers forquarters from eager custom-ers. Everyone put their hand topractically everything back then.Everyone helped everyone else.

I’d just finished helping thelast of a lengthy line of custom-ers when a little girl burst intothe foyer. Her smile was warmerthan the July sunshine – warmer

than laughter. And her eyes were dazzling. She came in the door with a quarter held

between thumb and finger, high above herhead. And her mother, absolutely beaming, stood just outside the open door behind her.

I knew right away what was going on: thiswas a Big Day for a child on the verge of tak-ing an important step towards growing up.

Mom had given her a quarter so she couldcome in and buy a paper All By Herself.

What joy on that little face! And a stern voice from a stern face behind

me ended it in a moment: “Were you born ina barn?”

I’ve never, ever seen a child so deflated socompletely so suddenly… so expertly.

All joy gone, she forgot to buy her news-paper. She closed the door behind her as shewent out into a dismal, cloudy day – at least, that’s the way I remember it.

Dear Editor,Jeff Waddell [Police critique utter

garbage, July 9 Letters, Langley Advance]claimed that my letter on police abuse [G-20 paints bleak picture, July 6 Letters,Advance] was “utter garbage” and that itoffended him that it was published. Perhapshe missed the point: I was pointing outabuses that have not even been mentionedin the mainstream media.

Mr. Waddell could look into Ms. AmyMiller of Alternative Media Centre and JesseRosenfeld of the UK’s Guardian publication. Both have filed official complaints with theOntario police oversight agency.

It was also claimed that male officersstrip-searched female protesters and

many women were touched inappropri-ately, including under-age girls who were“traumatized.” Amnesty International hascalled for a public inquiry.

Mr. Waddell and others who thinkthe police can do no wrong should stop“baaing” like good sheep and do a simpleYouTube search.

Dear Editor,The public would like the Langley

Has the District Parent Advisory Councilpublicly supported her? Has the LangleyTeachers’ Association? CUPE?

Why was the announcement that hercontract was renewed not made at a publicboard meeting? Are trustees afraid to facethe public?

Put trustees’ votes on record

Dear Editor,One day I noticed flood-

ing in my front yard flowerbed. It seemed to have beenunder water for awhile.

I called the Townshipand they determined it wasa leak on my side of the

water valve, so they said itwas my problem.

Luckily, it was also on myside of my (water meter)valve, so I could turn itoff without paying theTownship $100 to turn offthe valve.

After days of digging, Ifound the leak: it was 40inches below the surface.

The actual repair con-sisted of a 3/8 turn on thecompression fitting!

When I asked the engin-eering department about thefittings, I was told those fit-tings “are never buried.”

If the permit requires thatthey should not be buried, then the permit processshould including makingsure they are not buried.

Since the Township col-lects large fees, if there isa problem (in violation ofcode), then they shouldhandle it instead of passingit to the new owner. Thehouse is only four and ahalf years old.

If anyone wants informa-tion on where to dig if theyhave a leak, email me [email protected].

Holiday children lack respectDear Editor,

This morning, my family and I woke up to find my car inmy driveway kicked in – not just a little dent, but a hugeimprint that has even caused the paint to fall off.

I live in a very quiet, child-friendly neighbourhood inWalnut Grove, and it sickens me to believe that the adoles-cents are going around at all hours of the night, kicking inpeople’s personal property to amuse themselves.

Not only was my car kicked in, but my dad’s yard wastewas littered all over the ground, including broken glass.

I realize it is now summer holidays and these kids arerestless, but parents should make sure they know wheretheir children are during the night, and encourage them tobehave and respect other people’s properties.

Dear Editor,The HST inception is being badly handled

for introduction to small businesses. Manyof them are confused and don’t know howto bill their customers.

I was at a restaurant with my wife andfriends. When the bill was presented, itshowed a 12 per cent tax charge for bothour food and the wine, plus and additional10 per cent alcohol tax on the wine.

I questioned the server, who said that isthe way it is set up on the computer, so itmust be right.

I pointed out there should only be 12 percent HST for the total bill, and no alcohol(sales) tax.

Her supervisor was skeptical but didadjust the bill. She said she phoned someother restaurants and they said they weredoing the same thing.

What has the provincial government beendoing when business does not have guide-lines for acting as their tax collectors?

Ray Crawford of Delta submittedthe winning story recalling hisbest memories of Empire Stadium.

I have many fond memories ofEmpire Stadium — unfortunatelymy fondest memory, my first time atEmpire Stadium, has nothing to dowith the BC Lions.

The first time I set foot insideEmpire Stadium was on Saturday,Nov. 26, 1960, for the 48th annualGrey Cup Game.

In 1960 I was 10 years old, andthis was the first time that I attendeda professional football game.

It was the first time that I attendedany professional game. The OttawaRough Riders defeated Edmonton 16to 6 to become the 1960 Grey Cupchampions, and Ron Stewart of theOttawa Rough Riders was the GreyCup’s most valuable player.

I can still remember some ofthe players’ names: Russ Jackson,Jackie Parker, Johnny Bright, NormiKwong, and Vic Chapman.

Before the game there was theGrey Cup parade. My dad was asea cadet officer with the CaptainVancouver Corps in Stanley Park andthe cadets were part of the parade.

I was seated in an area with somefriends of my dad and watched theparade. As I watched the parade itwas like waiting for Christmas mor-ning; I couldn’t wait to get to EmpireStadium.

Finally the parade ended and mydad, still in uniform, got me and wewent to the game.

Arriving at Empire Stadium thesounds, smells, and the entiregoings-on put my head on a pivot, for I did not want to miss any of thisfirst-time experience.

We waited in line with our ticketsand then waited in line at the con-cession stands. Stocked up with hotdogs, Coke and peanuts, we walkedthrough the small tunnel entranceand for the first time I could seeEmpire Stadium from the inside.

Both teams were on the fieldwarming up. Punters were punt-ing, kickers were kicking field goals, quarterbacks were throwing toreceivers, linemen were going overtheir blocking techniques and therewas just so much to watch at onetime. I had been to a three-ring cir-

cus but this was so much more.As I recall we were seated on the

west side, near the end zone close toHastings Street. I sat watching all theplayers on the field and calling outthere’s Jackie, there’s Johnny, and Ithink I see Normi Kwong.

My dad handed me a hot dog butI couldn’t eat I was in such trance Icould not take my eyes of the fieldor the players… My eyes never leftthe field… I loved everything aboutit. I wanted nothing to change. Tome, football had to be played in thisway in this stadium.

Over the years there were manytimes I visited Empire Stadium… thecontinuation of a tradition.

Weekly ReportWeekly Report

A percentage of souvenirsales goes back to thelocal committee.by Roxanne [email protected]

Souvenirs are JenniferJohnson’s area of exper-tise. Afterall, her day jobis running the recentlyrenovated gift shop at theFort National Historic Site.

So when the long-timeFort Langley resident wasapproached to chair thesouvenirs committee forthe BC Summer Games, the avid lacrosse enthusi-ast said it was the mostnatural fit in the world.

Since she first heardthat her hometown ofLangley was going to beplaying host to the BCSummer Games – whichshe’d been involved intwice before throughminor lacrosse – shedusted off her Games hatand insisted to anyonewho would listen that shewas going to be involvedsomehow.

Well, someone musthave been listening, because about eightmonths ago now, she wasspecifically asked to headup the retail componentof the BC Summer Gamesefforts.

“I was so excited whenI got asked. I couldn’thave asked for a betterspot for me,” she said.

Working with othercommittees and theRichmond-based WilsonInternational – the officialsouvenir supplier for BCGames – Johnson beganordering immediately afterthe Olympics.

Keeping the selectionsimple, she put in for aseries of garments thatwould brandish the local

Games name and/or logo. Then, since the stock

arrived at the end ofMarch, Johnson has madeit her mission – with theaid of several committedvolunteers – to attend asmany community eventsas possible in efforts tosell the items.

The ensemble includesthree higher-priced keep-

sakes, a white polo shirt,a green ladies jacket, anda navy hoodie.

These items are provingincredibly popular withthe mature supporters andvolunteers, Johnson said, older adults who don’tlike wearing T-shirts andmay have more discretion-ary money to spend.

Also available for fans

are a series of three T-shirts – a white, navy, and grey (this one boastsa grunge-like design), aswell as navy ball capsthat can be purchased foronly $20.

While many athletes, officials, family membersand volunteers are expect-ed to snatch up the itemsas keepsakes of the event,Johnson said there’s anadded bonus to purchas-ing the Games garments– especially ahead oftime.

All sales made priorto this Friday, July 16– including those onlineor at the Games office– will generate between15 and 40 per cent of thesale price for the localcommittee.

None of the souvenirswill be available for salebetween July 17 and July21, Johnson noted.

But during the four daysof the Games, WilsonInternational will havesales kiosks set up behindthe grandstand at McLeodAthletic Park, and in theback parking lot of theLangley Events Centre, tosell more.

Admittedly, Johnsonsaid, when Wilson takesover selling on the finalfour days, the percentageof proceeds for the localGames committee dimin-ishes to only 10 per cent– across the board.

Another bonus, sheexplained, is that if anystock is left over after-wards, the local Gamescommittee is not on thehook for its cost.

The garments are ondisplay and available forsizing at the Games office,on the second floor ofthe LEC until Friday. Theoffice is set up to takepayments of cash, debit,or Visa and MasterCard.

Roxanne Hooper/Langley Advance

A team of volunteers with the Township of Langley’s BC Summer Gamesmodelled the souvenir clothing available. John Leckman (back left)modelled the navy T-shirt and ball cap, while committee chair JenniferJohnson sported a white T-shirt and (her favourite) a green Games jacketavailable only for ladies. She was accompanied by Melissa Lonneberg, who showed off the navy hoodie, while Games president MichaelJackstien (back right) wore his white polo shirt. Melanie Themmen(front) modelled what’s being called a grey grunge shirt that is expectedto be most popular with the younger crowd.
