DRAFT LOCAL PLAN
Colchester Borough Council has pub-lished its draft Local Plan 2017 - 2033 and will be undertaking consultations from 16 June to 24 July. Full details of the plan are available on the village website www.langham.org.uk, togeth-er with a report by the Parish Council as it affects Langham, presented at the Annual Parish Meeting. A Borough Council drop-in session will take place at Langham Community Centre on Thursday 6 July from 4.00 pm to 8.00 pm, attended by council officers and other representatives, when residents and members of the public can make their views known. The draft Local Plan proposes an allo-cation of 80 dwellings in Langham over the plan period 2017-2033, with developments of two estates of 40 and 30 dwellings respectively in School Road and 10 dwellings in Wick Road. Based on the draft Local Plan and Boxted Neighbourhood Plan, a plan-ning application for 36 dwellings in Boxted has been submitted to the Bor-ough Council. Objections to this appli-cation have been received from the Environment Agency and Langham Parish Council, citing the lack of ca-pacity at Langham Water Recycling Centre. The addition of 80 dwellings in Langham would add significantly to this lack of capacity. All are encouraged to attend the drop-in session on 6 July, when residents and members of the public can make their views known.
CONGRATULATIONS!
Congratulations to former editor of the newsletter, Ian Hollands, who has recently been elected President of Colchester Probus.

BOXTED EVERGREENS Our club enjoyed many interesting and pleasant afternoons recently. For our Easter meeting we ate hot cross buns and enjoyed a visit from Reverend Mandy. Ruth Sycamore won first prize for her Easter basket. Seventeen members enjoyed a coach trip to Norfolk, watching glass blowing at Langham Glass, then on to a visit to Burnham Market. Another trip saw the club members touring Southwold, followed by a visit to Aldeburgh, enjoying fish and chips on the way. We have a planned trip to Brick Lane Music Hall with afternoon tea at the end of June, which is sold out. New members are always welcome. Ring Linda on 01206 272710

The W.I. recent get togethers includ-ed an evening of household tips, some very sporting ladies adorned themselves in the fashion of the 1950s housewife whilst the ladies amused themselves with tips past and present, including a stain remov-ing demonstration which included Geraldine bravely applying lipstick to her Sunday best silk! This was followed by a quiz and even finding cleaning use for WD40 and lighter fuel! Georgina Edwards ele-gantly won the glamourous 1950s housewife. May saw some of the Boxted ladies attending the gathering of W.I. groups in this “Spring Valley” region, joining many from Langham for a so-cial evening. Additionally, a large contingent also enjoyed a wine tasting evening, cour-tesy of Mr Wheelers Wine shop at Langham, learning some interesting wine facts whilst gaining a very healthy taste for the wines! The ladies took to various methods of transport that evening - a handful even returning by bicycle via a very dark Hundred Lane carefully protec-tive of their purchases! A thoroughly enjoyable evening was had by all and our best wishes go out to Victoria Brown as we hope she has tamed her saddle!!!! The May meeting saw a talk of the history and benefits of Pilates after the formalities of the AGM. Thanks go to Jo Metson for her im-pressive presentation and following patience whilst all members “joined in” of sorts with a degree of laughter- for a brief experience either laying, sitting or standing.
BOXTED W.I.
This will be the last Snowball in view of the upcoming changes to the Village Hall Committee. Our thanks go to all those who sup-ported the Village Hall through their contributions.
BOXTED HISTORY GROUP Before commencing Mays talk on the extraction of salt in the Black-water estuary, members were asked ‘How many had a packet of Maldon salt at home?’ and sur-prisingly about half had. The speaker David Newman has no connection with the salt indus-try, but became interested in the subject when he moved to Gold-hanger and became the local his-torian. The presence of salt works in the Blackwater was recorded in the Doomsday book and the number increased as more uses for salt were found. Estuaries are natural-ly more salty with successive tides increasing the concentra-tion. In particular the Blackwater is located in an area with low rain-fall, high levels of sunshine and drying east winds creating one of the highest levels of salinity in the U.K. at 17% compared with 3% in the open sea. Salt became so important and profitable that in 1640 a salt tax was introduced and inevitably resulted in hundreds of smug-glers. Tax evaders and illegal pro-ducers were hanged for evasion. When cheaper rock salt was dis-covered in Cheshire in 1670 the local industry began to decline. Eventually only the works in Mal-don remained but an increase in demand for fashionable salt baths and health foods exceeded its output and additional production has resumed at Goldhanger.
Our Spotlight On.. feature is tak-ing a break this issue, but will return in September when the spotlight will focus on Langham Carpet Bowls club.

RUBBISH AND RECYCLING
Hopefully every resident will, by now, have received a card telling them about the new rubbish and recycling collection arrange-ments for their address. Just in case that hasn’t happened, here’s a brief summary: Wheelie bins are not being distributed in Boxted & Langham; general rubbish will continue to be disposed of in black bin bags Black bin liners will be collected fortnightly instead of weekly, a maximum of 3 per collection; they will be collected in the Blue week Paper & textile recycling have moved to the Green week Food waste will continue to be collected weekly Garden waste bags became free from 20th June. When collecting from a collection point, you must produce a voucher which can be ordered online at www.colchester.gov.uk/recycling or by phone on 01206 282700 Langham rubbish and recycling will continue to be collected on a Friday Boxted collection days will vary as they do now, depending on where you live, but the actual day may be different to what it has been. Check your recycling calendar.
