The Bowerbird, abundant in Queensland, collects objects to attract mates. Enthused by the concept, Brisbane-based jeweller Ari Athans, and Melbourne-based artist David Bromley, created a collection of limited edition jewellery pieces and named it after the hoarding bird.

Inspired by a mutual love for collecting objects, the duo’s Bowerbird collection was exhibited during September at Jan Murphy Gallery, and is now available exclusively at Fortitude Valley boutique, A Day On Earth.

The latest cultural building to grace the banks of the Brisbane river is the new Gallery of Modern Art, designed by architectus.

Architectus’ design for GoMA responds to the highly social nature of both the locale and the institution’s vibrant contemporary exhibitions. The monumental structure sits on the Brisbane River bank at Kurilpa Point, opposite the CBD. It provides a fitting cultural gesture at the northern terminus of the long sprawl of entertainment venues and parklands that is South Bank. Cardboard industrialist(61 3) 9419 5572 [email protected]

Why didn’t someone think of this earlier? Brisbane-born designer Anthony Dann, the brain behind the ‘Mitsy’ stool, took a humble sheet of cardboard to create a sustainable – and award-winning – stool. Sturdy enough to hold 150kgs, Dann’s ‘Mitsy’ stool was originally created in 2006 using recycled bicycle boxes.

The stool explores the power of geometry and engages in timely issues relating to environmental sustainability and manufacturing. Awarded the sustainability award at this year’s Launch Pad program in Sydney, chosen by InterfaceFLOR™, the stool comes flat-packed with a tab-and-slot assembly. The cardboard is completely recyclable in Australia, further cementing the environmental sensibility and awareness of the design.

Fact or fiction?(61 7) 3666 [email protected]

The Ryan Renshaw Gallery in Fortitude Valley exhibits an eclectic mix of work by artists across Australia and New Zealand. Exhibiting at the gallery during September, Christopher Langton, pop sculptor, explored the ambiguous nature of real and simulated events.

By reconstructing images captured from computer games and other virtual realities, Langton presented works that create a dizzying blur between fact and fiction.

The slick manufacturing of these images generate a reality that is glossy, yet difficult to decipher. In his PVC paintings the paint is applied to the back of the surface so that when the work is complete you look through the material. “People look at my work and they think it’s been made commercially whereas it’s been hand-made…and I enjoy that paradox.”

Claudia Demichi’s art is exhibiting at the gallery until November.

5 Minutes With… Brian Steendÿksteendyk.com

On Brisbane…“I’ve lived in Brisbane most of my life apart from the years living in Chicago, Amsterdam, Singapore and Milan, and it’s our wonderful indoor/outdoor lifestyle that brings me back every time. There is nothing to compare with a Brisbane winter day and our magnificent blue cloudless skies. There are also so many fantastic opportunities associated with living in such a rapidly developing region and I’ve been fortunate enough to contribute as project architect for the Inner City Bypass, which has had a huge influence on Brisbane’s everyday life.”

On work…“Design is a way of relating to life...of bringing joy and quality to people’s lives. It doesn’t matter what design discipline; what does matter is the end result. It needs to be visually, economically and environmentally sustainable and to achieve this, considered thought needs to be imbued. I love the diversity of our practice, which keeps things fresh and alive. Going from exhibition design, to interiors for an art gallery, to the architecture of a multi-million dollar residence, to a coat hanger… all these require diligence, persistence and tenacity to achieve quality pieces that embellish our built environment.”Eames at Artisan

Following 20 years residing in Wilston, Brisbane bathroom retailer Christiaan’s has up and moved – to Windsor. Chris Stevens, director and designer, began Christiaan’s in 1983 when companies such as Christiaan’s were scarce. “We noticed there was a definite lack in boutique bathroom studios in Australia, especially in Queensland,” Chris stated. “We saw the need for something more than mediocre fittings within the industry.”

The new showroom is a two-story premise with full glass frontage located on the dynamic Newmarket road. To celebrate the opening, Christiaan’s will be launching an exciting new range.

Its a game of two players –

a game that I like. My clients

are always good friends at the end of the process.

But before we start, Im very particular with whom I start playing. I need vision,

money and trust to make the best product.

Pecha Kucha Brisbane [email protected]

Over 400 people turned out in the Turbine Hall at Brisbane Powerhouse to see Pecha Kucha Brisbane Vol.01. The evening provided a true cross-section of the Brisbane design industry, starting with a nostalgic look back over design in the 20th Century by Chris Osborne, photographer and publisher of Brisbane Modern. James Russell gave inspiring insight into his RAIA award-winning architecture, Russell Anderson surprised and delighted the audience with his bubble machines and Alexander Lotersztain spoke passionately about the role of design as an catalyst for change throughout the world. The next instalment is a special event in conjunction with y-archQ as part of Architecture Week 20:20, 26 October at the Brisbane Powerhouse.

Queensland artist, Christina Waterson’s latest project, apart from her contribution to the first Pecha Kucha Brisbane event recently, was a huge installation at the RAIA Qld Architecture Awards 2007, in collaboration with Cox Rayner Architects. The sculptural ceiling was made using recyclable material in an innovative way – namely cardboard.

Waterson comments: “The real aim for me was to inspire the creative people attending the event, to help them rethink the way they use materials and give them fuel for thought that ultimately may inspire them until the next awards.”
