25. GERMANCode No. 120Class XI and XII

The syllabus for classesXI andXIIwhile following the communicative approach laysmore stresson expansionof vocabulary, improvedexpressionas also studentprojects.Grammarwill be revised and teachers are expected to build on the foundation laid in previousyears.Moredifficult exercisesusing thegrammar structures alreadyknown, have tobepractisedin class with a clear emphasis on applied grammar. By now the teacher should be able to useGermanas the solemediumof instruction in class. Students shouldbe able to respond inGermanto verbal andvisual stimuli and communicate on awide range of everyday topics.Speakingandwriting skills nowareon the forefront, though readingand listening skills havealsonot beenneglected.Reading should also bemore thorough anddetailed in nature. It is not enough to just skima textand extract the salient points or extract specific information based on our need. It is now alsoimportant to read a text andunderstand thedetails. In the aural skills department students should be able to follow texts that are lengthy andwherethe speaker speaks on a given topic fromeveryday life in a nuancedmanner. In thewritten portion studentswill at the end of class XII have to summarise a given passage inGerman in contrast to class Xwhere the summary is to bewritten in English. Translation in thetraditional sensehas once againnot been incorporated.Studentswill get ample opportunity to speak and express themselves in class. Projects have alsobeen included in almost every chapter. Ideally an oral test should be a part of the assessment inbothyears. But due to systemic constraints this couldnot bedone. The final exam in classXIIwilltest reading andwriting skills aswell as grammar. We aim thatwhen a student leaves school at the endofXII he/shewill be able to communicate ineverydaysituationsanddealwithproblemshe/sheencounters ineveryday life.More importantlytheGerman learnt in school shouldbe thebase for aprofessional in any field tobuildon if he / sheshould be in a situationwhere they need to use their language skills professionally. Theymay insuch a situation need to complement their knowledgewith the subject specific vocabulary fromtheir field.
